How we talk about sexual assault online

    and I was on an evening out with friends
    to celebrate one of their birthdays.

    We hadn't been all together
    for a couple of weeks
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    and it was a perfect evening
    as we were all reunited.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    At the end of the evening,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    I caught the last underground train
    back to the other side of London.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    The journey was smooth.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    I got back to my local station
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    and I began the 10-minute walk home.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    As I turned the corner onto my street,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    my house in sight up ahead,
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    I heard footsteps behind me
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    that seemed to have
    approached out of nowhere
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    and were picking up pace.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    Before I had time to process
    what was happening,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    a hand was clapped around my mouth
    so that I could not breathe
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    and the young man behind me
    dragged me to the ground,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    beat my head repeatedly
    against the pavement
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    until my face began to bleed,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    kicking me in the back and neck
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    while he began to assault me,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    ripping off my clothes
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    and telling me to "shut up"
    as I struggled to cry for help.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    With each smack of my head
    to the concrete ground,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    a question echoed through my mind
    that still haunts me today.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    "Is this going to be how it all ends?"
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    [Little could] I have realized
    that I'd been followed the whole way
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    from the moment that I left the station.
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    And hours later,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    I was standing topless and barelegged
    in front of the police,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    having the cuts and bruises
    on my naked body photographed
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    for forensic evidence.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
    Now there are few words to describe
    the all-consuming feelings
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    of vulnerability, shame, upset
    and injustice that I was ridden with
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    in that moment and for the weeks to come.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    But wanting to find a way
    to condense these feelings
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    into something ordered
    that I could work through,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    I decided to do what
    felt most natural to me.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    I wrote about it.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    It started out as a cathartic exercise.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    I wrote a letter to my assaulter,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    humanizing him as "you,"
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    to identify him as part
    of the very community
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    that he had so violently
    abused that night.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    Stressing the tidal wave
    effect of his actions I wrote,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    "Did you ever think
    of the people in your life?
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    I don't know who the people
    in your life are.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    I don't know anything about you.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    But I do know this:
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    you did not just attack me that night.
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    I'm a daughter, I'm a friend,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    I'm a sister, I'm a pupil,
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    I'm a cousin, I'm a niece,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    I'm a neighbor,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    I'm the employee who
    served everyone coffee
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    in the café under the railway.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    And all the people who form
    these relations to me
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    make up my community,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    and you assaulted
    every single one of them.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    You violated the truth that I
    will never cease to fight for,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    and which all
    of these people represent --
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    that there are infinitely more
    good people in the world than bad."
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    But determined not to let
    this one incident make me lose faith
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    in the solidarity in my community
    or humanity as a whole,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    I recalled the 7/7 terrorist bombings
    in July 2005 on London transport,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    and how the mayor of London at the time,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    and indeed my own parents,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    had insisted that we all get back
    on the Tubes the next day,
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    so that we wouldn't be defined or changed
    by those that had made us feel unsafe.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    I told my attacker,
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    "You've carried out your attack,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    but now I'm getting back on my tube.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
    My community will not feel
    we are unsafe walking home after dark.
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    We will get on the last tubes home,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    and we will walk up our streets alone,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    because we will not ingrain
    or submit to the idea
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    that we are putting ourselves
    in danger in doing so.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    We will continue to come together,
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    like an army,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    when any member of our
    community is threatened,
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    and this is a fight you will not win."

    At the time of writing this letter,
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    I was studying for my exams in Oxford,
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    and I was working
    on the local student paper there.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    And despite being lucking enough
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    to have friends and family supporting me,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    it was a pretty isolating time.
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    I didn't know anyone
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    who'd been through
    something like this before,
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    at least I didn't think I did.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    I'd read the news reports, the statistics,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    and I knew how common
    sexual assault was
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    and yet I couldn't actually
    name a single person
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    that I'd heard speak out about
    an experience of this kind before.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    So in a somewhat spontaneous decision,
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    I decided that I would publish
    my letter in the student paper,
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    hoping to reach out to others in Oxford
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    that might have had a similar experience
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    and be feeling the same way.
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    At the end of the letter,
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    I asked others to write in
    with their experiences
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    under the hashtag, #notguilty
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    to emphasize that survivors of assault
    could express themselves
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    without feeling shame or guilt
    about what happened to them --
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    to show that we could all
    stand up to sexual assault.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    What I never anticipated
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    is that almost overnight,
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    this published letter would go viral.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    Soon we were receiving hundreds
    of stories from men and women
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    across the world,
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    which we began to publish
    on a website I set up,
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    and the hashtag became a campaign.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    There was an Australian mother in her 40s
    who described how on an evening out,
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    she was followed to the bathroom
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    by a man who went
    to repeatedly grab her crotch.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    There was a man in the Netherlands
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    who described how he was
    date raped on a visit to London
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    and wasn't taken seriously
    by anyone he reported his case to.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    I had personal Facebook messages
    from people in India and South America
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    saying how can we bring the message
    of the campaign over there.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    One the first contributions we had
    was from a woman called [Nikki],
  • 5:00 - 5:03
    who described growing up
    being molested my her own father.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    And I had friends open up to me
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    about experiences ranging from
    those that happened last week
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    to those that happened years ago
    that I'd had no idea about.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    And the more that we started
    to receive these messages,
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    the more we also started
    to receive messages of hope.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    People feeling empowered
    by this community of voices
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    standing up to sexual assault
    and victim-blaming.
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    One woman called Olivia,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    after describing how she was attacked
    by someone she had trusted
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    and cared about for a long time,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    said, "I've read many
    of the stories posted on here,
  • 5:30 - 5:33
    and I feel more hopeful
    that if so many women can move forward,
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    then I can, too.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    I've been inspired by many
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    and I hope I can be
    as strong as them someday,
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    and I'm sure I will."
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    People around the world began
    tweeting under this hashtag
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    and the letter was republished
    and covered by the national press,
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    as well as being translated into several
    other languages worldwide.
  • 5:49 - 5:50
    But something struck me
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    about the media attention
    that this letter was attracting.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    For something to be front-page news,
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    given the word "news" itself,
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    we can assume it must be
    something new or something surprising.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    And yet sexual assault
    is not something new.
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    Sexual assault,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    along with other kinds of injustices,
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    is reported in the media all the time.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    But through the campaign,
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    these injustices were framed
    as not just news stories,
  • 6:13 - 6:17
    they were first-hand experiences
    that had effected real people,
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    who were creating,
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    with the solidarity of others,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    what they needed
    and had previously lacked:
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    a platform to speak out,
  • 6:22 - 6:26
    the reassurance they weren't alone
    or to blame for what happened to them,
  • 6:26 - 6:30
    and open discussions that would help
    to reduce stigma around the issue.
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    The voices of those directly effected
    were at the forefront of the story,
  • 6:33 - 6:37
    not the voices of journalists
    or commentators on social media,
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    and that's the story was news.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    We live in an incredibly
    interconnected world
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    with the proliferation of social media,
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    which is of course a fantastic
    resource for igniting social change.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    But it's also made us
    increasingly reactive,
  • 6:51 - 6:54
    from the smallest annoyances
    of, "Oh my train's been delayed,"
  • 6:54 - 6:59
    to the greatest injustices of war,
    genocides, terrorist attacks.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    Our default response as become
    to leap to react to any kind of grievance
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    by tweeting, Facebooking, hastagging --
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    anything to show others
    that we too have reacted.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    The problem with reacting
    in the manner on mass
  • 7:10 - 7:13
    is it can sometimes mean
    that we don't actually react at all --
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    not in the sense of actually
    doing anything, anyway.
  • 7:16 - 7:17
    It might make ourselves feel better,
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    feeling like we've contributed
    to a group mourning or outrage,
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    but it doesn't actually change anything.
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    And what's more,
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    it can sometimes drown out the voices
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    of those directly
    effected by the injustice,
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    whose needs must be heard.

    Worrying too,
  • Not Synced
    is the tendency for some
    reactions to injustice
  • Not Synced
    to build even more walls,
  • Not Synced
    being quick to point fingers
  • Not Synced
    with the hope of providing easy
    solutions to complex problems.
  • Not Synced
    One British tabloid,
  • Not Synced
    on the publication of my letter,
  • Not Synced
    branded a headline stating,
  • Not Synced
    "Oxford Student Launches Online
    Campaign to Shame Attacker."
  • Not Synced
    But the campaign never
    meant to shame anyone.
  • Not Synced
    It meant to let people speak
    and to make others listen.
  • Not Synced
    Divisive Twitter trolls were quick
    to create even more injustice,
  • Not Synced
    commenting on my attacker's
    ethnicity of class
  • Not Synced
    to push their own prejudiced agendas.
  • Not Synced
    And some even accused me
    of feigning of the whole thing
  • Not Synced
    to push, and I quote, "my feminist
    agenda of man-hating."
  • Not Synced
    I know, right?
  • Not Synced
    As if I'm going to be like,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey guys! Sorry I can't make it,
  • Not Synced
    I'm really busy trying to hate the entire
    male population by the time I'm 30."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Now, I'm almost sure that these people
    would say the things the say in person,
  • Not Synced
    but it's as if because they might
    be behind a screen,
  • Not Synced
    in the comfort in their own home
    when on social media,
  • Not Synced
    that people forget that what they're
    doing is a public act --
  • Not Synced
    that other people will be reading it
    and will be effected by it.
  • Not Synced
    Returning to my analogy
    of getting back on our trains,
  • Not Synced
    another main concern that I have
  • Not Synced
    about this noise that escalates
    from our online responses to injustice
  • Not Synced
    is that it can very easily slip
    into portraying us as the effected party,
  • Not Synced
    which can lead to a sense of defeatism,
  • Not Synced
    a kind of mental barrier to seeing
    and opportunity for positivity or change
  • Not Synced
    after a negative situation.
  • Not Synced
    A couple of months
    before the campaign started,
  • Not Synced
    or any of this happened to me,
  • Not Synced
    I went to a TEDx event in Oxford
  • Not Synced
    and I saw Zelda la Grange speak,
  • Not Synced
    the former private secretary
    to Nelson Mandela.
  • Not Synced
    One of the stories
    she told really stuck me.
  • Not Synced
    She spoke of when
    Mandela was taken to court
  • Not Synced
    by the South African Rugby Union
  • Not Synced
    after he commissioned
    an inquiry into sports affairs.
  • Not Synced
    In the court room,
  • Not Synced
    he went up to the South African
    Rugby union's lawyers,
  • Not Synced
    shook them by the hand
  • Not Synced
    and conversed with them each
    in their own language.
  • Not Synced
    And Zelda wanted to protest,
  • Not Synced
    saying they had no right to his respect
  • Not Synced
    after this injustice
    that they had caused him.
  • Not Synced
    He turned to her and said,
  • Not Synced
    "You must never allow the enemy
    to determine the grounds for battle."
  • Not Synced
    And at the time of hearing these words
  • Not Synced
    I didn't really know why
    they were so important,
  • Not Synced
    but I felt though they were
  • Not Synced
    and I wrote them down in a notebook
    that I had on me at the time.
  • Not Synced
    But I've thought about
    this line a lot ever since.
  • Not Synced
    Revenge,
  • Not Synced
    or the expression of hatred
    towards those who have done us injustice
  • Not Synced
    may feel like a human instinct
    in the face of wrong,
  • Not Synced
    but we need to break out of these cycles
  • Not Synced
    if we are to hope to transform
    negative events of injustice
  • Not Synced
    into positive social change.
  • Not Synced
    To do otherwise
  • Not Synced
    continues to let the enemy
    determine the grounds for battle,
  • Not Synced
    creates a binary
  • Not Synced
    where we who have suffered
    become the effected,
  • Not Synced
    pitted against them, the perpetrators.
  • Not Synced
    And just like we got back on our tubes,
  • Not Synced
    we can't let our platforms
    for interconnectivity and community
  • Not Synced
    be the places that we settle for defeat.
  • Not Synced
    But I don't want to discourage
    a social media response,
  • Not Synced
    because I owe the development
    of the #notguilty campaign
  • Not Synced
    almost entirely to social media.
  • Not Synced
    But I do want to encourage
    a more considered approach
  • Not Synced
    to the way we use it
    to respond to injustice.
  • Not Synced
    And the start I think
    is to ask ourselves two things.
  • Not Synced
    Firstly,
  • Not Synced
    why do I feel this injustice?
  • Not Synced
    In my case there were
    several answers to this.
  • Not Synced
    Someone had hurt me and those who I loved,
  • Not Synced
    under the assumption that they
    wouldn't have to be held to account
  • Not Synced
    or recognize the damage they had caused.
  • Not Synced
    Not only that,
  • Not Synced
    but thousands of men and women
    suffer every day from sexual abuse,
  • Not Synced
    often in silence,
  • Not Synced
    and yet it's still a problem
  • Not Synced
    that we don't give the same
    air-time to as other issues.
  • Not Synced
    It's still an issue many people
    blame victims for.
  • Not Synced
    So next ask yourself how,
  • Not Synced
    in recognizing these reasons,
  • Not Synced
    could I go about reversing them?
  • Not Synced
    With us, this was holding
    my attacker to account --
  • Not Synced
    and many others.
  • Not Synced
    It was calling them out
    on the effect that they had caused.
  • Not Synced
    It was give air-time to the issue
    of sexual assault,
  • Not Synced
    opening up discussions amongst friends,
    amongst families, in the media
  • Not Synced
    that had been closed for too long,
  • Not Synced
    and stressing that victims shouldn't feel
    to blame for what happened to them.
  • Not Synced
    You might still have a long way to go
    in solving this problem entirely,
  • Not Synced
    but in this way,
  • Not Synced
    we can begin to use social media
    as an active tool for social justice,
  • Not Synced
    as a tool to educate,
  • Not Synced
    to stimulate dialogues,
  • Not Synced
    to make those in positions
    of authority aware of an issue
  • Not Synced
    by listening to those
    directly effected by it.
  • Not Synced
    Because sometimes these questions
    don't have easy answers.
  • Not Synced
    In fact they rarely do.
  • Not Synced
    But this doesn't mean we can't
    give them a considered response.
  • Not Synced
    In situations where you can't
    go about thinking
  • Not Synced
    how you'd reverse this injustice,
  • Not Synced
    you can still think
    maybe not what you can do
  • Not Synced
    but what you can not do.
  • Not Synced
    You can not build further walls
    by fighting injustice with more prejudice,
  • Not Synced
    more hatred.
  • Not Synced
    You can not speak over
    those directly effected by an injustice.
  • Not Synced
    And you can not react to injustice
    only to forget about it the next day
  • Not Synced
    just because the rest
    of Twitter has moved on.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes not reacting
    instantly is ironically
  • Not Synced
    the best immediate course
    of action we can take.
  • Not Synced
    Because we might be angry, upset
    and energized by injustice,
  • Not Synced
    but let's consider our responses.
  • Not Synced
    Let us hold people to account
  • Not Synced
    without descending into a culture
  • Not Synced
    that thrives off shaming
    and injustice ourselves.
  • Not Synced
    Let us remember that distinction --
  • Not Synced
    so often forgotten by Internet users --
  • Not Synced
    between criticism and insult.
  • Not Synced
    Let us not forget
    to think before we speak
  • Not Synced
    just because we might
    have a screen in front of us.
  • Not Synced
    When we create noise on social media,
  • Not Synced
    let it not drown out the needs
    of those effected,
  • Not Synced
    but instead let it amplify their voices,
  • Not Synced
    so the Internet becomes a place
    where you're not the exception
  • Not Synced
    if you speak out about something
    that has actually happened to you.
  • Not Synced
    All these considered
    approaches to injustice
  • Not Synced
    invoke the very keystones
    on which the Internet was built:
  • Not Synced
    to network,
  • Not Synced
    to have have signal,
  • Not Synced
    to connect --
  • Not Synced
    all these terms that imply
    bringing people together,
  • Not Synced
    not pushing people apart.
  • Not Synced
    Because if you look up the word
    "justice" in the dictionary,
  • Not Synced
    before punishment,
  • Not Synced
    before administration of law
    or judicial authority,
  • Not Synced
    you get, "The maintenance
    of what is right."
  • Not Synced
    I think there are a few things
    more "right" in this world
  • Not Synced
    than bringing people together,
  • Not Synced
    than unions.
  • Not Synced
    And if we allow
    social media to deliver that,
  • Not Synced
    then it can deliver a very
    powerful form of justice, indeed.
