-
Not Synced
When you have a job that pays you enough
to cover your basic needs,
-
Not Synced
your bills, and even some more to spend,
-
Not Synced
the assumption is that you'd be happy,
-
Not Synced
or, even better, fulfilled.
-
Not Synced
And it seems unthinkable
when you wake up and say
-
Not Synced
you're going to leave a job like that
to pursue a passion.
-
Not Synced
And that was my dilemma six years ago.
-
Not Synced
I had a comfortable job,
I lived a comfortable life,
-
Not Synced
and people expected me to be fulfilled,
-
Not Synced
but I wasn't.
-
Not Synced
There was something
in me that wanted more.
-
Not Synced
There was a misalignment between
the things I did on a daily basis
-
Not Synced
and the things that I deeply cared about.
-
Not Synced
And so I decided to quit
-
Not Synced
and explore the possibility of bringing
this passion into my daily routine.
-
Not Synced
And the think about finding your passion
-
Not Synced
is that it's not straightforward.
-
Not Synced
Even for people and money and degrees,
-
Not Synced
they still struggle
to identify their passion.
-
Not Synced
And here I was as a 30-year old
talking about finding my passion
-
Not Synced
and turning it into a career.
-
Not Synced
Literally, people told me,
-
Not Synced
"You don't talk about passion
until you've made enough money."
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
"Or at least until
you're ready to retire."
-
Not Synced
Because, there's a notion
that looking inward
-
Not Synced
and finding the things that give us
pleasure and fulfillment
-
Not Synced
is a luxury that only the rich can enjoy,
-
Not Synced
or a pleasure that only
the retired can indulge in.
-
Not Synced
Which made me wonder:
-
Not Synced
is passion only for the rich
-
Not Synced
or an experience only
the retired can enjoy?
-
Not Synced
For many of us, we've been led to believe
-
Not Synced
that life is a race for survival.
-
Not Synced
We've been conditioned to see ourselves
as survivors that must do everything
-
Not Synced
in our power to survive.
-
Not Synced
In Africa, we had to go
through school, cram and pass,
-
Not Synced
in the hope that you get a job after,
-
Not Synced
and if you do, stick at it
no matter how much it sucks.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Until you get a better offer
or you're asked to retire.
-
Not Synced
And as a dropout,
-
Not Synced
I knew that I was not
entitled to anything.
-
Not Synced
Every opportunity was a privilege.
-
Not Synced
And so when I thought about quitting,
-
Not Synced
it was a huge risk.
-
Not Synced
I was given two alternatives,
-
Not Synced
which are the most popular in Africa.
-
Not Synced
The first one is sign up for any course
at a vocational institution and do it.
-
Not Synced
My second option, settle
for any job offer you can get,
-
Not Synced
no matter the working conditions,
-
Not Synced
and do it.
-
Not Synced
That probably explains why we have
so many of our young people
-
Not Synced
being trafficked in search
of greener pastures.
-
Not Synced
I opted for the first option.
-
Not Synced
I did look at a couple
vocational institutions
-
Not Synced
in the hope that I would find a course
that resonated with my persona,
-
Not Synced
my dream, and my aspiration.
-
Not Synced
I was disappointed to learn that there
was no room for misfits like me
-
Not Synced
in these institutions.
-
Not Synced
The education system
in many parts of the world
-
Not Synced
has been designed
around pre-selected options
-
Not Synced
that young people are expected
to fit in or risk becoming misfits.
-
Not Synced
And so going through school
I was nurtured and conditioned
-
Not Synced
to think in the straight line
and stay within the straight line.
-
Not Synced
But when I dropped out, I discovered
a world of possibilities.
-
Not Synced
I knew I could be anything,
I could study anything,
-
Not Synced
so I leveraged free online courses.
-
Not Synced
That's how I built my CV,
got into employment,
-
Not Synced
and worked for eight years.
-
Not Synced
And after eight years,
-
Not Synced
I told myself there must be more to life
-
Not Synced
than just going through
the routines of life.
-
Not Synced
So in 2014 I started
an organization called Kyusa
-
Not Synced
where we are working
with other school youth
-
Not Synced
and empowering them to turn their passions
-
Not Synced
into profitable, scalable
and sustainable businesses.
-
Not Synced
Now, when we talk about passion,
-
Not Synced
one of the most common questions
that people ask is, "What is passion?
-
Not Synced
How do I even find it?"
-
Not Synced
And in the simplest definition,
-
Not Synced
passion is a collection
of your life experiences
-
Not Synced
that give you the deepest
sense of fulfillment.
-
Not Synced
And to identify your passion,
you need to look inward.
-
Not Synced
So we used two reflective questions.
-
Not Synced
The first question is,
-
Not Synced
if you had all the time
and the money in the world,
-
Not Synced
what would you spend your time doing?
-
Not Synced
It sounds like a very simple question,
-
Not Synced
but many people struggle
to answer this question
-
Not Synced
because they've just
never thought about it.
-
Not Synced
The second question we ask
-
Not Synced
is, what makes you happy
-
Not Synced
or gives you the deepest
sense of fulfillment?
-
Not Synced
Now, you would assume that we all
know what makes us happy,
-
Not Synced
but it's also interesting to note
that so many people have no idea
-
Not Synced
what makes them happy,
-
Not Synced
because they are so busy
going through the routines of life,
-
Not Synced
they've never stopped to look inward.
-
Not Synced
And so identifying the things that give us
a deep sense of fulfillment
-
Not Synced
and the things that give us deep joy
-
Not Synced
are thoughts that begin to direct us
in the direction of our passion.
-
Not Synced
And just in case you're wondering
-
Not Synced
what your answers are
to those two questions,
-
Not Synced
I invite you to sit with those questions
later and just reflect about it.
-
Not Synced
However, I am also aware
that passion alone
-
Not Synced
cannot guarantee success in life.
-
Not Synced
And I should note
-
Not Synced
that not every passion
can become a career.
-
Not Synced
For passion to become a career,
-
Not Synced
it must be coupled with the right set
of skills, conditioning, and positioning.
-
Not Synced
So when we get our young
people to look inward,
-
Not Synced
we also ask them what skills do you have,
-
Not Synced
what talents do you have,
what experience do you have
-
Not Synced
that you can use to build
a niche in the marketplace.
-
Not Synced
But more than that, we also
look at the market trends,
-
Not Synced
because it doesn't matter
how much you love and enjoy it.
-
Not Synced
If nobody wants it
or is willing to pay for it,
-
Not Synced
it can't be a career. It's just a hobby.
-
Not Synced
And the third thing we look at
is how do you position yourself?
-
Not Synced
Who are you targeting?
Who do you want to sell to?
-
Not Synced
Why would they want to buy from you?
-
Not Synced
And so the combination of the three
is what enables you to move
-
Not Synced
from just a passion to a business.
-
Not Synced
And many of our young people
have been able to turn their ideas
-
Not Synced
and burning desires
into profitable businesses
-
Not Synced
or social enterprises,
-
Not Synced
and they're not just creating jobs,
-
Not Synced
but they are solving societal challenges.
-
Not Synced
I'll share with you two examples.
-
Not Synced
One of them is Esther.
-
Not Synced
I met Esther two years ago.
-
Not Synced
She had been out of school for two years
-
Not Synced
and she had been deeply affected
by her dropping out.
-
Not Synced
As a result, she had experienced
severe depression
-
Not Synced
to a point where she attempted
to take her own life several times.
-
Not Synced
Her friends and family
didn't know what to do for her.
-
Not Synced
They simply prayed for her.
-
Not Synced
When I met Esther and I started
to converse with her,
-
Not Synced
I asked her a simple question.
-
Not Synced
I said, "If you had all the time
and the money in the world,
-
Not Synced
what would you do?"
-
Not Synced
Without thinking or hesitation,
-
Not Synced
her eyes lit up and she began to tell me
-
Not Synced
how she wanted to change
the lives of young people.
-
Not Synced
She wanted to restore
hope and dignity to other teenagers
-
Not Synced
by helping them make
informed decisions about life.
-
Not Synced
I was certain of the fact
that this burning desire in her
-
Not Synced
was unquenchable,
-
Not Synced
so we worked with Esther
to put a framework around this desire.
-
Not Synced
Today, she runs a social
enterprise in her village
-
Not Synced
raising awareness about substance abuse,
mental health, sexual reproductive health,
-
Not Synced
and is helping other school dropouts
acquire vocational skills
-
Not Synced
so they can make a living for themselves.
-
Not Synced
Esther turned 20 this year,
-
Not Synced
and for the last two years,
she has organized and annual teen fest
-
Not Synced
that brings together over 500 teenagers.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Young people that are able
to network and collaborate
-
Not Synced
on different projects,
-
Not Synced
but more importantly to meet professionals
they would otherwise never have met.
-
Not Synced
This is all engineered by a girl that
believed the world had no room for her,
-
Not Synced
that without education
she would never amount to anything.
-
Not Synced
But by looking inward
and tapping into a burning desire,
-
Not Synced
putting structure around it,
-
Not Synced
it has become a model
-
Not Synced
that not only changed her life
-
Not Synced
but it's transforming the lives
of hundreds of young people every year.
-
Not Synced
My other example is Moussa.
-
Not Synced
Moussa is a natural artistic guy.
-
Not Synced
He's the kind that would look
at any design and replicate it with ease.
-
Not Synced
And so he seeks to recognize
that ability in him.
-
Not Synced
When I met Moussa,
he was doing all kinds of crafts --
-
Not Synced
bags, belts, wallets --
-
Not Synced
but it was more of a part-time thing,
-
Not Synced
or sometimes, if he was really broke
and needed to make quick money,
-
Not Synced
then he would come up
with a design and sell it.
-
Not Synced
But he had never thought
of it as a business.
-
Not Synced
We started working with Moussa,
-
Not Synced
helping him shift his mindset
from a hobby to a business,
-
Not Synced
and beginning to rethink, how can he
make products that he could sell
-
Not Synced
and even be able to scale?
-
Not Synced
Moussa makes some of
the most amazing bags I've ever seen,
-
Not Synced
and over the last one year
Moussa's business has grown.
-
Not Synced
He has been recognized
in different places.
-
Not Synced
Currently, he's talking about
exporting to developed countries.
-
Not Synced
Moussa, like any other dropout,
-
Not Synced
believed that without
academic credentials,
-
Not Synced
he wouldn't amount to anything.
-
Not Synced
He thought the talent he had was nothing
-
Not Synced
simply because it did not have
an academic paper to define it.
-
Not Synced
But by looking inward and finding
that what he had was the greatest asset
-
Not Synced
and supporting him
to turn it into a business,
-
Not Synced
he's not just living, he's thriving.
-
Not Synced
The thing about looking inward
is that it can be scary,
-
Not Synced
especially if you're doing it
for the first time,
-
Not Synced
but the truth is you never
truly start living
-
Not Synced
until you learn to live
from the inside out.
-
Not Synced
And in unlocking potential,
we need to look inward to identify
-
Not Synced
the things that give us
a deep sense of fulfillment,
-
Not Synced
the things that give us the deepest joy,
-
Not Synced
and then weave them into
the patterns of our daily routines.
-
Not Synced
In so doing, we cease to work
and we start to live,
-
Not Synced
and the thing about living is that
you never have to retire or to resign.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
And so as you think about
unlocking potential for ourselves,
-
Not Synced
for our young people, for our children,
-
Not Synced
let's not condition them to look outward
-
Not Synced
but condition them to look inward
-
Not Synced
to tap into who they are and bring
that self into what they do every day.
-
Not Synced
When you cease to work and you live,
-
Not Synced
when passion becomes a career,
-
Not Synced
you don't just excel,
-
Not Synced
you become unstoppable.
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
