Try something new for 30 days
-
0:00 - 0:02A few years ago,
-
0:02 - 0:05I felt like I was stuck in a rut,
-
0:05 - 0:07so I decided to follow in the footsteps
-
0:07 - 0:10of the great American philosopher, Morgan Spurlock,
-
0:10 - 0:13and try something new for 30 days.
-
0:13 - 0:15The idea is actually pretty simple.
-
0:15 - 0:18Think about something you've always wanted to add to your life
-
0:18 - 0:21and try it for the next 30 days.
-
0:21 - 0:23It turns out,
-
0:23 - 0:2530 days is just about the right amount of time
-
0:25 - 0:27to add a new habit or subtract a habit --
-
0:27 - 0:29like watching the news --
-
0:29 - 0:31from your life.
-
0:31 - 0:34There's a few things I learned while doing these 30-day challenges.
-
0:34 - 0:36The first was,
-
0:36 - 0:39instead of the months flying by, forgotten,
-
0:39 - 0:42the time was much more memorable.
-
0:42 - 0:45This was part of a challenge I did to take a picture every day for a month.
-
0:45 - 0:48And I remember exactly where I was
-
0:48 - 0:51and what I was doing that day.
-
0:51 - 0:53I also noticed
-
0:53 - 0:55that as I started to do more and harder 30-day challenges,
-
0:55 - 0:57my self-confidence grew.
-
0:57 - 0:59I went from desk-dwelling computer nerd
-
0:59 - 1:02to the kind of guy who bikes to work --
-
1:02 - 1:05for fun.
-
1:05 - 1:08Even last year, I ended up hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro,
-
1:08 - 1:10the highest mountain in Africa.
-
1:10 - 1:13I would never have been that adventurous
-
1:13 - 1:16before I started my 30-day challenges.
-
1:16 - 1:18I also figured out
-
1:18 - 1:20that if you really want something badly enough,
-
1:20 - 1:23you can do anything for 30 days.
-
1:23 - 1:25Have you ever wanted to write a novel?
-
1:25 - 1:27Every November,
-
1:27 - 1:29tens of thousands of people
-
1:29 - 1:33try to write their own 50,000-word novel from scratch
-
1:33 - 1:35in 30 days.
-
1:35 - 1:37It turns out, all you have to do
-
1:37 - 1:40is write 1,667 words a day
-
1:40 - 1:42for a month.
-
1:42 - 1:44So I did.
-
1:44 - 1:46By the way, the secret is not to go to sleep
-
1:46 - 1:49until you've written your words for the day.
-
1:49 - 1:51You might be sleep-deprived,
-
1:51 - 1:53but you'll finish your novel.
-
1:53 - 1:57Now is my book the next great American novel?
-
1:57 - 1:59No. I wrote it in a month.
-
1:59 - 2:02It's awful.
-
2:02 - 2:04But for the rest of my life,
-
2:04 - 2:07if I meet John Hodgman at a TED party,
-
2:07 - 2:09I don't have to say,
-
2:09 - 2:11"I'm a computer scientist."
-
2:11 - 2:14No, no, if I want to, I can say, "I'm a novelist."
-
2:14 - 2:17(Laughter)
-
2:17 - 2:20So here's one last thing I'd like to mention.
-
2:20 - 2:23I learned that when I made small, sustainable changes,
-
2:23 - 2:25things I could keep doing,
-
2:25 - 2:27they were more likely to stick.
-
2:27 - 2:30There's nothing wrong with big, crazy challenges.
-
2:30 - 2:33In fact, they're a ton of fun.
-
2:33 - 2:35But they're less likely to stick.
-
2:35 - 2:37When I gave up sugar for 30 days,
-
2:37 - 2:39day 31 looked like this.
-
2:39 - 2:41(Laughter)
-
2:41 - 2:44So here's my question to you:
-
2:44 - 2:46What are you waiting for?
-
2:46 - 2:48I guarantee you the next 30 days
-
2:48 - 2:50are going to pass
-
2:50 - 2:52whether you like it or not,
-
2:52 - 2:54so why not think about something
-
2:54 - 2:56you have always wanted to try
-
2:56 - 2:58and give it a shot
-
2:58 - 3:00for the next 30 days.
-
3:00 - 3:02Thanks.
-
3:02 - 3:06(Applause)
