Try something new for 30 days

  • 0:00 - 0:05
    A few years ago,
I felt like I was stuck in a rut,
  • 0:05 - 0:07
so I decided to follow in the footsteps
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    of the great American
    philosopher, Morgan Spurlock,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
and try something new for 30 days.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
The idea is actually pretty simple.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    Think about something you've always
wanted to add to your life
  • 0:19 - 0:21
and try it for the next 30 days.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
It turns out 30 days is just
about the right amount of time
  • 0:25 - 0:28
to add a new habit or subtract a habit --
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    like watching the news --
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    from your life.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    There's a few things I learned
    while doing these 30-day challenges.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    The first was,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    instead of the months
    flying by, forgotten,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
the time was much more memorable.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
This was part of a challenge I did
to take a picture every day for a month.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
And I remember exactly where I was
and what I was doing that day.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    I also noticed
  • 0:52 - 0:56
that as I started to do more
    and harder 30-day challenges,
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    my self-confidence grew.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
I went from desk-dwelling computer nerd
  • 1:00 - 1:02
to the kind of guy who bikes to work.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    For fun!
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    (Laughter)
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Even last year, I ended up hiking
    up Mt. Kilimanjaro,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    the highest mountain in Africa.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
I would never have been that adventurous
before I started my 30-day challenges.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
I also figured out that if you
    really want something badly enough,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
you can do anything for 30 days.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Have you ever wanted to write a novel?
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    Every November,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    tens of thousands of people
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    try to write their own
    50,000-word novel, from scratch,
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    in 30 days.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
It turns out, all you have to do
is write 1,667 words a day
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    for a month.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    So I did.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    By the way, the secret
is not to go to sleep
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    until you've written
    your words for the day.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    You might be sleep-deprived,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    but you'll finish your novel.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
Now is my book the next great
    American novel?
  • 1:57 - 1:59
No. I wrote it in a month.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    It's awful.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    (Laughter)
  • 2:03 - 2:05
But for the rest of my life,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
if I meet John Hodgman at a TED party,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    I don't have to say,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    "I'm a computer scientist."
  • 2:11 - 2:14
No, no, if I want to,
    I can say, "I'm a novelist."
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    (Laughter)
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    So here's one last thing
    I'd like to mention.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
I learned that when I made
    small, sustainable changes,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    things I could keep doing,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
they were more likely to stick.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    There's nothing wrong
    with big, crazy challenges.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
In fact, they're a ton of fun.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
But they're less likely to stick.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
When I gave up sugar for 30 days,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    day 31 looked like this.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    (Laughter)
  • 2:42 - 2:44
So here's my question to you:
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    What are you waiting for?
  • 2:46 - 2:49
I guarantee you the next 30 days
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    are going to pass
whether you like it or not,
  • 2:52 - 2:57
so why not think about something
you have always wanted to try
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    and give it a shot!
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    For the next 30 days.
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    Thanks.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    (Applause)
