I DIDN’T Migrate my Minecraft Account - Here’s What Happened

  • 0:00 - 0:02
In 2020, Mojang made an announcement
  • 0:02 - 0:04
that they were going to migrate all
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    Mojang/Legacy Java Edition
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    Minecraft accounts to Microsoft accounts
  • 0:09 - 0:10
And you had to do it whether
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    you liked it or not
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    So, what did I do?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Well, I just didn't
  • 0:15 - 0:18
That's right, for the sake of science
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    I intentionally didn't migrate
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    one of my Mojang accounts
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    with the goal to document
  • 0:23 - 0:25
exactly what would happen to that account
  • 0:25 - 0:27
and see if there was any possible way
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    I could recover it afterwards
  • 0:29 - 0:32
This video is over 3 years in the making
  • 0:32 - 0:35
and I'm finally ready to share my results
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    (Introduction Music)
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    You heard that right
  • 0:40 - 0:42
I bought a new Mojang account
  • 0:42 - 0:44
just to sacrifice it to the Microsoft
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    overlords
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So, let's set the timeline here
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    On September 2014
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    when Microsoft bought Mojang
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    for $2.5 billion dollars
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    For the next six years,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    Microsoft would pretty much mostly
  • 0:57 - 1:00
keep their hands off Java edition
  • 1:00 - 1:03
That was until October 21, 2020
  • 1:03 - 1:05
Just as we thought we were in the clear
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    from Microsoft's wrath
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    the official announcement was made
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    about merging Mojang accounts
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    to Microsoft accounts
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    Now, after this announcement
  • 1:14 - 1:15
there was a period where users
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    were still able to create
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    new Mojang accounts
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    So, three days later
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    That's exactly what I did
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    And with this email
  • 1:23 - 1:25
of my receipts sent to me
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    on October 24th, 2020
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    my experiment officially began
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    For the first few months
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    really nothing happened at all
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    I occasionally logged in
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and played Minecraft normally
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    with my Mojang account
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    But when December, 2020
  • 1:39 - 1:39
    rolled around
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    all new Minecraft account purchases
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    started to be Microsoft accounts
  • 1:44 - 1:46
That's when I knew that they were serious
  • 1:46 - 1:48
about this whole Microsoft account thing
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    But existing Mojang accounts
  • 1:50 - 1:53
were not able to migrate yet
  • 1:53 - 1:53
    From the start,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Mojang said that Microsoft account
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    migration would begin in
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    early 2021
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    But March 31st, 2021
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    came and went
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    and still no migration
  • 2:04 - 2:06
3 months later in early June,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
still players were not able to migrate
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    I thought for a bit
  • 2:10 - 2:11
that I was in the clear
  • 2:11 - 2:13
As I had quite the hesitation
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    to migrating my Mojang accounts
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    to Microsoft
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    They're a big company that
  • 2:17 - 2:18
collects a lot of user data
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and had a terms of service
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    that was vastly different
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    from the Minecraft EULA
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    Essentially meaning,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
we had to agree to both
  • 2:25 - 2:27
I felt like this was kind of
  • 2:27 - 2:28
a sneaky move on their part
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    to gain more legal control
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    over Minecraft accounts
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    without having to announce
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    a huge change
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    to the Minecraft EULA
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    And not surprisingly,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
people didn't take much notice to this
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    But as June progressed,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    Migration was finally opened
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    to select accounts
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    and would slowly keep expanding
  • 2:46 - 2:47
to others over the next few months
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    Until, eventually, all Mojang accounts
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    were available to migrate
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    Many months later,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    on February 18th, 2022
  • 2:55 - 2:57
I received my first actual email
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    from Mojang about account migration
  • 2:59 - 3:01
They said, starting on March 10
  • 3:01 - 3:03
users would no longer be able
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    to log into Minecraft
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    with their Mojang accounts
  • 3:05 - 3:08
but that day came and went
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    And because I was using
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    the old Minecraft launcher
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    that didn't have auto-updating
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    or have insane amounts of
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    bloats or eye candy
  • 3:15 - 3:16
I was still able to log in
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    with my Mojang accounts
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    and play on Minecraft servers
  • 3:20 - 3:22
all the way until August 2022
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    when Mojang stopped allowing
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    unmigrated accounts
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    to authenticate when
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    joining Minecraft servers
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    This was the turning point
  • 3:29 - 3:31
when I was pretty much forced
  • 3:31 - 3:32
to migrate all of my other
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    Minecraft accounts
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    except for this one
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    So, from here on out
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    this account was essentially unusable
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    Then starting on September 1st,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    and continuing over the course
  • 3:43 - 3:43
    of 8 months
  • 3:43 - 3:46
I got three more reminder emails
  • 3:46 - 3:48
that were identical to the last one
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    Then on May 17th, 2023,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    I received another email
  • 3:53 - 3:55
announcing the last day to migrate
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    was on September 19, 2023
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    That marked the official deadline
  • 4:01 - 4:03
to where I would not be able to
  • 4:03 - 4:05
migrate my accounts after that date
  • 4:05 - 4:08
Just 9 days before the final day
  • 4:08 - 4:10
I got one final email reminder
  • 4:10 - 4:12
saying it was time to migrate
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    Nope, not gonna happen
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    The day has come
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    migrations to Microsoft accounts
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    have officially ended
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    Except suprisingly,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    Mojang very graciously
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    gave us hold outs
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    90 extra days
  • 4:29 - 4:31
to give us new copies of Minecraft
  • 4:31 - 4:34
Now, this was a turning point for me
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    Do I take the offer?
  • 4:35 - 4:37
or be a complete idiot and keep
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    the experiment going
  • 4:39 - 4:40
What do you think I chose?
  • 4:44 - 4:46
Not only did I completely ignore
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    migrating my account
  • 4:47 - 4:49
but I also missed the time period
  • 4:49 - 4:51
to claim a new Minecraft account
  • 4:51 - 4:53
but I'm not going to end this experiment
  • 4:53 - 4:53
    so soon
  • 4:53 - 4:55
I wanted to see if it was
  • 4:55 - 4:57
still possible after all of this
  • 4:57 - 5:00
to somehow get my account back
  • 5:00 - 5:02
or at least get a new copy of the game
  • 5:02 - 5:04
So I decided to contact Minecraft support
  • 5:04 - 5:06
making sure to include my order
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    and transaction ID
  • 5:07 - 5:09
to see if they'd be able to restore my
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    account at this point
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    And, of course,
  • 5:11 - 5:14
I instantly received an automated response
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    saying that any support tickets
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    after September 19, 2023
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    regarding migration
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    would go ignored
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    Crap
  • 5:22 - 5:25
Now this has to be the end, right?
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    Not so fast
  • 5:26 - 5:28
You see, in the Minecraft EULA
  • 5:28 - 5:29
    is a section covering
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    binding arbitration
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    Which only shows up
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    in the Nintendo Switch URL
  • 5:34 - 5:35
    for some reason
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    Basically, it's something
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    that lots of big companies
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    in the U.S. put in
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    their End Users Contracts
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    that forces users to
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    settle disputes out of court
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    with their arbitrators
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    instead of you suing them
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    But unfortunately, arbitration
  • 5:49 - 5:50
    usually costs money
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    Way more than the $26.95
  • 5:52 - 5:54
I paid for this Minecraft account
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    So, that's where this paragraph
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    comes into play
  • 5:56 - 5:58
I have the option to mail
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    a Notice of Dispute
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    to Microsoft
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    All I have to do
  • 6:01 - 6:03
is tell them what the problem is
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    and what I want
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    Sounds simple enough
  • 6:06 - 6:08
So I wrote a brief message
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    and gave them three options
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    Let me migrate my account,
  • 6:12 - 6:14
give me a new Minecraft account
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    free of charge,
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    or refund my $26.95
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    I originally paid for it
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    I also included a copy
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    of my original receipt
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    for good measure
  • 6:23 - 6:25
Now, it was off to the post office
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    I got an email response
  • 6:29 - 6:30
    from Microsoft
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    Did I do it?
  • 6:32 - 6:33
Did I find the secret way
  • 6:33 - 6:34
    to get my account back?
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    Of course not
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    Just another cookie cutter
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    cooperate response
  • 6:39 - 6:41
telling me that the migration period
  • 6:41 - 6:41
    had ended
  • 6:41 - 6:43
and just to put the cherry on top,
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    they said, we invite you
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    to acquire Minecraft
  • 6:47 - 6:48
    through a Microsoft account
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    to continue enjoying the game
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    Acquire Minecraft
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    you say
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    Why don't you just say,
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    "Sorry, dummy
  • 6:55 - 6:57
you have to buy the game again"
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    Even though I already completely
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    paid for this game
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    just over three years ago
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    I guess the term, "Buy",
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    literally doesn't mean anything
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    anymore if companies
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    can just get away with
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    taking your purchased items away
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    simply because of inactivity
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    I was obviously not happy
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    with this response
  • 7:15 - 7:17
So, as a last ditch effort
  • 7:17 - 7:19
I sent a Better Business Bureau
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    complaint
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    Which Microsoft also responded to
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    even referring to the notice
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    of dispute I sent earlier
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    and just copied and pasted
  • 7:28 - 7:29
    the original response
  • 7:29 - 7:29
    in this letter
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    So, I ended up writing
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    this response to that
  • 7:32 - 7:33
You can pause if you want
  • 7:33 - 7:34
    to read my whole rant
  • 7:34 - 7:35
    But unfortunately,
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    after I sent that,
  • 7:37 - 7:39
I never got any response back
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    from Microsoft
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    So what did I learn
  • 7:41 - 7:43
    from intentionally not migrating
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    my account?
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    Well, we now know
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    that Microsoft was pretty serious
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    and literally took my
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    paid copy of Minecraft away
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    Now, in my opinion
  • 7:52 - 7:54
I feel that this whole forced
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    migration thing
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    was a pretty crappy move
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    Nobody deserves to have
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    something they paid for
  • 7:59 - 8:01
    and expected to keep
  • 8:01 - 8:02
    be taken away from them
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    like this
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    I'm pretty sure there are
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    thousands, possibly hundreds
  • 8:06 - 8:07
    of thousands
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    of Minecraft accounts
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    that just never got migrated
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    that are now lost forever
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    Just reading the most recent
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    comments of the original migration
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    announcement video
  • 8:16 - 8:17
    shows other users frustrations
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    with the exact same issue
  • 8:19 - 8:20
Now I know some of you
  • 8:20 - 8:21
    might say in the comments
  • 8:21 - 8:23
they had three years to migrate
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    Sucks for them
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    But let me just remind
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    you all that
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    life happens
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    maybe you just weren't
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    interested in Minecraft
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    for three years
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    But later decided to
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    get back into it
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    only to realize
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    that your account was deleted
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    Forcing old players to
  • 8:38 - 8:39
    re-buy the game
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    for no reason other
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    than, "Sorry, you have to"
  • 8:42 - 8:45
    is kind of an anti-consumer
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    move
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    In comparison,
  • 8:47 - 8:48
    look at Google
  • 8:48 - 8:49
    They're a big company
  • 8:49 - 8:50
    that everyone loves to
  • 8:50 - 8:51
    hate on
  • 8:51 - 8:52
But let me tell you this
  • 8:52 - 8:53
    Google bought YouTube
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    in 2006
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    for $1.65 billion dollars
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    Shortly after,
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    old YouTube accounts were
  • 9:00 - 9:01
    migrated to Google accounts
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    Now seventeen years later,
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    if you for some reason
  • 9:06 - 9:08
still have a legacy YouTube account,
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    Google, still to this day,
  • 9:11 - 9:12
    allows you to migrate it
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    to a Google account
  • 9:14 - 9:15
    and keep in mind,
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    YouTube is a free service
  • 9:18 - 9:20
I feel that it's perfectly reasonable
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    to expect Microsoft
  • 9:22 - 9:23
    at minimum
  • 9:23 - 9:24
    to credit users with a
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    new Minecraft account
  • 9:26 - 9:28
if they missed the migration period
  • 9:28 - 9:29
Especially, if they have the original
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    receipt with the transaction ID
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    I hope Microsoft reconsiders
  • 9:33 - 9:34
    their decision to lock out
  • 9:34 - 9:35
    users like that
  • 9:35 - 9:37
even when they have undeniable proof
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    of account ownership
  • 9:39 - 9:40
    Anyways, that's the end
  • 9:40 - 9:42
    of this crazy and admittedly
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    stupid experiment
  • 9:44 - 9:45
Now that I have the rest
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    of my accounts migrated
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    maybe now I can safely
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    ghost this game for awhile
