I DIDN’T Migrate my Minecraft Account - Here’s What Happened

  • 0:00 - 0:02
In 2020, Mojang made an announcement
  • 0:02 - 0:04
that they were going to migrate all
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    Mojang/Legacy Java Edition
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    Minecraft accounts to Microsoft accounts
  • 0:09 - 0:10
And you had to do it whether
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    you liked it or not
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    So, what did I do?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Well, I just didn't
  • 0:15 - 0:18
That's right, for the sake of science
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    I intentionally didn't migrate
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    one of my Mojang accounts
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    with the goal to document
  • 0:23 - 0:25
exactly what would happen to that account
  • 0:25 - 0:27
and see if there was any possible way
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    I could recover it afterwards
  • 0:29 - 0:32
This video is over 3 years in the making
  • 0:32 - 0:35
and I'm finally ready to share my results
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    (Introduction Music)
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    You heard that right
  • 0:40 - 0:42
I bought a new Mojang account
  • 0:42 - 0:44
just to sacrifice it to the Microsoft
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    overlords
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So, let's set the timeline here
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    On September 2014
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    when Microsoft bought Mojang
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    for $2.5 billion dollars
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    For the next six years,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    Microsoft would pretty much mostly
  • 0:57 - 1:00
keep their hands off Java edition
  • 1:00 - 1:03
That was until October 21, 2020
  • 1:03 - 1:05
Just as we thought we were in the clear
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    from Microsoft's wrath
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    the official announcement was made
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    about merging Mojang accounts
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    to Microsoft accounts
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    Now, after this announcement
  • 1:14 - 1:15
there was a period where users
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    were still able to create
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    new Mojang accounts
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    So, three days later
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    That's exactly what I did
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    And with this email
  • 1:23 - 1:25
of my receipts sent to me
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    on October 24th, 2020
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    my experiment officially began
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    For the first few months
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    really nothing happened at all
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    I occasionally logged in
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and played Minecraft normally
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    with my Mojang account
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    But when December, 2020
  • 1:39 - 1:39
    rolled around
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    all new Minecraft account purchases
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    started to be Microsoft accounts
  • 1:44 - 1:46
That's when I knew that they were serious
  • 1:46 - 1:48
about this whole Microsoft account thing
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    But existing Mojang accounts
  • 1:50 - 1:53
were not able to migrate yet
  • 1:53 - 1:53
    From the start,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Mojang said that Microsoft account
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    migration would begin in
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    early 2021
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    But March 31st, 2021
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    came and went
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    and still no migration
  • 2:04 - 2:06
3 months later in early June,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
still players were not able to migrate
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    I thought for a bit
  • 2:10 - 2:11
that I was in the clear
  • 2:11 - 2:13
As I had quite the hesitation
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    to migrating my Mojang accounts
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    to Microsoft
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    They're a big company that
  • 2:17 - 2:18
collects a lot of user data
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and had a terms of service
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    that was vastly different
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    from the Minecraft EULA
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    Essentially meaning,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
we had to agree to both
  • 2:25 - 2:27
I felt like this was kind of
  • 2:27 - 2:28
a sneaky move on their part
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    to gain more legal control
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    over Minecraft accounts
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    without having to announce
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    a huge change
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    to the Minecraft EULA
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    And not surprisingly,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
people didn't take much notice to this
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    But as June progressed,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    Migration was finally opened
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    to select accounts
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    and would slowly keep expanding
  • 2:46 - 2:47
to others over the next few months
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    Until, eventually, all Mojang accounts
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    were available to migrate
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    Many months later,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    on February 18th, 2022
  • 2:55 - 2:57
I received my first actual email
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    from Mojang about account migration
  • 2:59 - 3:01
They said, starting on March 10
  • 3:01 - 3:03
users would no longer be able
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    to log into Minecraft
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    with their Mojang accounts
  • 3:05 - 3:08
but that day came and went
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    And because I was using
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    the old Minecraft launcher
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    that didn't have auto-updating
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    or have insane amounts of
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    bloats or eye candy
  • 3:15 - 3:16
I was still able to log in
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    with my Mojang accounts
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    and play on Minecraft servers
  • 3:20 - 3:22
all the way until August 2022
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    when Mojang stopped allowing
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    unmigrated accounts
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    to authenticate when
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    joining Minecraft servers
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    This was the turning point
  • 3:29 - 3:31
when I was pretty much forced
  • 3:31 - 3:32
to migrate all of my other
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    Minecraft accounts
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    except for this one
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    So, from here on out
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    this account was essentially unusable
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    Then starting on September 1st,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    and continuing over the course
  • 3:43 - 3:43
    of 8 months
  • 3:43 - 3:46
I got three more reminder emails
  • 3:46 - 3:48
that were identical to the last one
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    Then on May 17th, 2023,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    I received another email
  • 3:53 - 3:55
announcing the last day to migrate
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    was on September 19, 2023
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    That marked the official deadline
  • 4:01 - 4:03
to where I would not be able to
  • 4:03 - 4:05
migrate my accounts after that date
  • 4:05 - 4:08
Just 9 days before the final day
  • 4:08 - 4:10
I got one final email reminder
  • 4:10 - 4:12
saying it was time to migrate
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    Nope, not gonna happen
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    The day has come
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    migrations to Microsoft accounts
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    have officially ended
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    Except suprisingly,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    Mojang very graciously
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    gave us hold outs
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    90 extra days
  • 4:29 - 4:31
to give us new copies of Minecraft
  • 4:31 - 4:34
Now, this was a turning point for me
