How Do Blind People Discover Their Sexual Orientation?
-
0:00 - 0:02In this video I'm going to answer
a question -
0:02 - 0:04that's as old as the universe.
-
0:05 - 0:06No, it's not.
-
0:10 - 0:13A question that comes up on YouTube
quite often is this one: -
0:13 - 0:15"How does a blind person know
their sexual preference?" -
0:15 - 0:18Right? Because, you know,
you can't see, -
0:18 - 0:21so you can't see how pretty somebody is
or what somebody looks like -
0:21 - 0:23or any of that kind of thing.
-
0:23 - 0:25So how do you know?
How the heck do you know? -
0:25 - 0:27Answering this question,
-
0:27 - 0:29I can only give you
my own personal experience. -
0:29 - 0:31I can't speak for anybody else
on this one. -
0:31 - 0:35I'll just tell you how I knew
what my preference was. -
0:35 - 0:36And is.
-
0:36 - 0:38[Ben laughs]
-
0:38 - 0:39[Tommy laughs]
-
0:42 - 0:44So, growing up, the things
that I learned -
0:44 - 0:46were all based on my surroundings.
-
0:46 - 0:49So my parents were straight,
all their friends were straight, -
0:49 - 0:52all the characters I saw in television
and movies were all straight too, -
0:52 - 0:55and that sort of helped
to steer me in a particular direction, -
0:55 - 0:57the direction that I went.
-
0:57 - 0:59This may not work for other people,
-
0:59 - 1:02but for me it was just the thing
that felt right to me. -
1:02 - 1:03It was the thing that made sense.
-
1:03 - 1:05And so that's the path I chose.
-
1:05 - 1:07As I got to be a teenager
and started talking to girls, -
1:07 - 1:10you know, then the experience got to be
a little different. Right? -
1:10 - 1:13Hormones are starting
to fly around and things, -
1:13 - 1:16and starting to get those butterflies
and starting to feel this sort of twinge, -
1:16 - 1:19and, "Boy, I like her. She's cool."
You know? -
1:19 - 1:22And that's one of those experiences
that I never got from my guy friends. -
1:22 - 1:25So in school, for example,
I can't look across the room and go, -
1:25 - 1:27"Ooh, I like her. I gotta go talk to her."
-
1:27 - 1:30Or, you know, "She's pretty,"
or this kind of thing. -
1:30 - 1:31No. For me it's all about conversation.
-
1:31 - 1:34Right? And if I talk to somebody
and we start to click -
1:34 - 1:37and we, you know, feel the same way
about certain things, -
1:37 - 1:39or, you know, somebody's just got
a cool energy to them, -
1:39 - 1:42or somebody's extremely funny,
-
1:42 - 1:45you know, that's how I get to see
whether or not I like somebody. -
1:45 - 1:47And then I have to take the chance
and say, you know, -
1:47 - 1:51"Would you like to come
to the Eighth Grade dance with me?" -
1:51 - 1:53And then we can stand
against the wall -
1:53 - 1:54and never dance together.
-
1:56 - 1:59ANNOUNCER: We interrupt this YouTube video
for this special announcement. -
1:59 - 2:03TOMMY: Hey, I just wanted to let you know
we've got some brand-new merch -
2:03 - 2:04available for the next seven days only.
-
2:04 - 2:06This is our Blind Caution sign series.
-
2:06 - 2:09Now, when I was in high school
there was a big, giant sign -
2:09 - 2:12out the front of my door that said
"Blind Child Area". -
2:12 - 2:14I always thought the white stick
would've been enough. But OK. -
2:14 - 2:17So we came up with our own
"Blind Caution" signs for you as well, -
2:17 - 2:20and we put it on some T-shirts,
hoodies and stickers. -
2:20 - 2:21There's Blind Drunk -
-
2:21 - 2:23that's in case a stagger
isn't enough for people. -
2:23 - 2:26You can read your shirt
and know that you're blind drunk. -
2:26 - 2:28There's Blind Driver.
-
2:28 - 2:31People are always yelling at motorists
on the roads. "Hey, look at my shirt!" -
2:31 - 2:33Or my personal favorite,
Blind Not Buzzed, -
2:33 - 2:35because this has happened to me
many, many times. -
2:35 - 2:37I'll sit down in a bar
and somebody will say, -
2:37 - 2:41"I think you've had too much already, sir."
"No, no. Look, I'm blind, not buzzed." -
2:41 - 2:45So if any of those interest you or
you'd like to get the classic stuff - -
2:45 - 2:47the Blind Film Critic or
The Tommy Edison Experience stuff - -
2:47 - 2:50the link is right there
in the description for the video. -
2:50 - 2:53And remember, it's only available
for the next seven days. -
2:53 - 2:56ANNOUNCER: We now return to this
YouTube video already in progress. -
2:56 - 2:59TOMMY: One of the things
I really enjoy is the smell and the sounds -
2:59 - 3:00of a woman.
-
3:00 - 3:03Like, all the fragrance, right?
The perfume and stuff. -
3:03 - 3:05It's just lovely. It's so nice.
-
3:05 - 3:07And, of course,
some are better than others. -
3:07 - 3:10Some people wear a little bit more
than they should. -
3:10 - 3:13But, you know, it's all part
of the experience. -
3:13 - 3:14The sounds of a woman -
-
3:14 - 3:17like the sound a woman's shoes make
on the floor sometimes, -
3:17 - 3:20you know, like on a cement floor,
you know, in an office building. -
3:20 - 3:22Oh, it's a great sound.
I just love it. -
3:22 - 3:25Plus girls and women
just have different stuff -
3:25 - 3:26than guys do.
-
3:26 - 3:28And that was attractive too.
-
3:28 - 3:31And these are some of the things
that helped me figure out -
3:31 - 3:32what my preference was.
-
3:32 - 3:34That's just what I was drawn to.
-
3:34 - 3:35I just liked girls and women.
-
3:35 - 3:38You know, I loved what they had to say.
-
3:38 - 3:39I liked listening to them talk.
-
3:39 - 3:41I liked hearing their stories.
-
3:41 - 3:43It's no more complicated than that.
-
3:43 - 3:45So that's really about it.
-
3:45 - 3:47You know, that's my story
and that is how I knew. -
3:47 - 3:50Now, I'm sure that there are
other things that I'm totally not aware of -
3:50 - 3:53and things that are going through
other people's heads -
3:53 - 3:54that I don't know,
-
3:54 - 3:57but it's such a difficult question
to answer. It really is. -
3:57 - 3:59But I will say this:
-
3:59 - 4:02I don't think sight plays into it.
I really don't. -
4:02 - 4:06Without sight I was able to determine
what I liked, who I liked, -
4:06 - 4:09and, honestly, I don't believe sight
played into this. -
4:09 - 4:10I really don't.
-
4:10 - 4:12You know, I simply liked who I liked.
-
4:16 - 4:20Well, thank you so much for watching
the video. I hope you enjoyed it. -
4:20 - 4:23I'd also love for you to follow me
on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. -
4:23 - 4:26That's just another way to find out
every time we put up -
4:26 - 4:28a brand-new video for you.
-
4:30 - 4:32BEN: Cos YouTube certainly wasn't.
-
4:32 - 4:35TOMMY: YouTube ain't doin' it.
They dropped the ball! -
4:36 - 4:37In fact, they dropped both balls.
