How Do Blind People Discover Their Sexual Orientation?

  • 0:00 - 0:02
In this video I'm going to answer
    a question
  • 0:02 - 0:04
that's as old as the universe.
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    No, it's not.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
A question that comes up on YouTube
    quite often is this one:
  • 0:13 - 0:15
"How does a blind person know
    their sexual preference?"
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    Right? Because, you know,
    you can't see,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
so you can't see how pretty somebody is
    or what somebody looks like
  • 0:21 - 0:23
or any of that kind of thing.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    So how do you know?
How the heck do you know?
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    Answering this question,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    I can only give you
    my own personal experience.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
I can't speak for anybody else
    on this one.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
I'll just tell you how I knew
    what my preference was.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    And is.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    [Ben laughs]
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    [Tommy laughs]
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    So, growing up, the things
    that I learned
  • 0:44 - 0:46
were all based on my surroundings.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
    So my parents were straight,
    all their friends were straight,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
all the characters I saw in television
and movies were all straight too,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    and that sort of helped
to steer me in a particular direction,
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    the direction that I went.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
This may not work for other people,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
but for me it was just the thing
    that felt right to me.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
It was the thing that made sense.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
And so that's the path I chose.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
As I got to be a teenager
    and started talking to girls,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
you know, then the experience got to be
    a little different. Right?
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    Hormones are starting
    to fly around and things,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
and starting to get those butterflies
and starting to feel this sort of twinge
  • Not Synced
and, "Boy, I like her. She's cool."
    You know?
  • Not Synced
And that's one of those experiences
that I never got from my guy friends.
  • Not Synced
    So in school, for example,
  • Not Synced
I can't look across the room
and go, "Ooh, I like her."
  • Not Synced
"I gotta go talk to her."
  • Not Synced
    Or, you know, "She's pretty,"
    or this kind of thing.
  • Not Synced
No. For me it's all about conversation.
  • Not Synced
Right? And if I talk to somebody
    and we start to click
  • Not Synced
and we, you know, feel the same way
    about certain things,
  • Not Synced
or, you know, somebody's just got
    a cool energy to them,
  • Not Synced
    or somebody's extremely funny,
  • Not Synced
you know, that's how I get to know
whether or not I like somebody.
  • Not Synced
Then I have to take the chance
    and say, you know,
  • Not Synced
    "Would you like to come
to the Eighth Grade dance with me?"
  • Not Synced
    And then we can stand
    against the wall
  • Not Synced
    and never dance together.
  • Not Synced
ANNOUNCER: We interrupt this YouTube video
    for this special announcement.
  • Not Synced
TOMMY: Hey, I just wanted to let you know
    we've got some brand-new merch
  • Not Synced
available for the next seven days only.
  • Not Synced
This is our "Blind Caution" sign series.
  • Not Synced
Now, when I was in high school
there was this big, giant sign
  • Not Synced
out the front of my door that said,
    "Blind Child Area".
  • Not Synced
I always thought the white stick
    would've been enough.
  • Not Synced
OK. So we came up with
    our own "Blind Caution" signs
  • Not Synced
    for you as well,
  • Not Synced
and we put it on some T-shirts,
    hoodies and stickers.
  • Not Synced
    There's "Blind Drunk" -
  • Not Synced
    I mean, that's in case a stagger
    isn't enough for people.
  • Not Synced
You can just read the front of your shirt
and know that you're blind drunk.
  • Not Synced
    There's "Blind Driver".
  • Not Synced
People are always yelling at motorists
    on the road and stuff.
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, look at my shirt!"
  • Not Synced
    Or my personal favorite,
    "Blind Not Buzzed",
  • Not Synced
because this has happened to me
    many, many times.
  • Not Synced
I'll sit down at a bar
    and somebody will say,
  • Not Synced
    "I think you've had
a little too much already, sir."
  • Not Synced
"No, no, look, I'm blind, not buzzed."
  • Not Synced
So if any of those interest you
  • Not Synced
    or you'd like to get
some of the classic stuff -
  • Not Synced
you know, the "Blind Film Critic"
or "The Tommy Edison Experience" stuff,
  • Not Synced
    the link is right there
in the description for the video.
  • Not Synced
    And remember, it's only available
    for the next seven days.
  • Not Synced
    ANNOUNCER: We now return
    to this YouTube video
  • Not Synced
    already in progress.
  • Not Synced
TOMMY: You know, one of the things
I really enjoy is the smell and the sounds
  • Not Synced
    of a woman.
  • Not Synced
    Like all the fragrance, right?
    The perfume and stuff.
  • Not Synced
It's just lovely. It's so nice.
  • Not Synced
    And, of course,
    some are better than others.
  • Not Synced
Some people wear a little bit more
    than they should.
  • Not Synced
But, you know, it's all part
    of the experience.
  • Not Synced
The sounds of a woman -
  • Not Synced
like the sound a woman's shoes make
    on the floor sometimes,
  • Not Synced
you know, like on a cement floor,
you know, in an office building.
  • Not Synced
    Oh, it's a great sound.
    I just love it.
  • Not Synced
    Plus girls and women
    just have different stuff
  • Not Synced
    than guys do.
  • Not Synced
    And that was attractive too.
  • Not Synced
And these are some of the things
    that helped me figure out
  • Not Synced
    what my preference was.
  • Not Synced
That's just what I was drawn to.
  • Not Synced
I just like girls and women.
  • Not Synced
You know, I love what they have to say.
  • Not Synced
I like listening to them talk.
  • Not Synced
    I like hearing their stories.
  • Not Synced
It's no more complicated than that.
  • Not Synced
    So that's really about it.
  • Not Synced
    You know, that's my story
and that is how I knew.
  • Not Synced
Now, I'm sure that there are
other things that I'm totally not aware of
  • Not Synced
and things that are going through
    other people's heads
  • Not Synced
    that I don't know,
  • Not Synced
but it's such a difficult question
    to answer It really is.
  • Not Synced
    But I will say this:
  • Not Synced
I don't think sight plays into it.
    I really don't.
  • Not Synced
Without sight I was able to determine
what I liked, who I liked,
  • Not Synced
    and, honestly,
  • Not Synced
I don't think sight played into this.
  • Not Synced
    I really don't.
  • Not Synced
You know, I simply liked who I liked.
  • Not Synced
Well, thank you so much for watching
the video. I hope you enjoyed it.
  • Not Synced
I'd also love for you to follow me
    on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
  • Not Synced
That's just another way to find out
    every time we put up
  • Not Synced
    a brand-new video for you.
  • Not Synced
    BEN: Cos YouTube certainly wasn't.
  • Not Synced
    TOMMY: YouTube ain't doin' it.
    They dropped the ball!
  • Not Synced
In fact, they dropped both balls.
