My road trip through the whitest towns in America

  • Not Synced
    Imagine a place
  • Not Synced
    where your neighbors
    greet your children by name,
  • Not Synced
    a place with splendid vistas,
  • Not Synced
    a place where you
    can drive just 20 minutes
  • Not Synced
and put your sailboat on the water.
  • Not Synced
    It's a seductive place, isn't it.
  • Not Synced
    I don't live there.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    But I did journey
  • Not Synced
on a 27,000 mile trip for two years
  • Not Synced
    to the fastest-growing
    and whitest counties in America.
  • Not Synced
    What is a Whitopia?
  • Not Synced
I define Whitopia in three ways.
  • Not Synced
First, a Whitopia has posted at least
six percent population growth since 2000.
  • Not Synced
Secondly, the majority of that growth
  • Not Synced
    comes from white migrants,
  • Not Synced
    and third, the Whitopia has
    an ineffable charm,
  • Not Synced
    a pleasant look and feel,
  • Not Synced
    a je ne sais quoi.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    To learn how and why
    Whitopias are ticking,
  • Not Synced
    I immersed myself
    for several months apiece
  • Not Synced
    in three of them:
  • Not Synced
    first, St. George, Utah;
  • Not Synced
    second, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho;
  • Not Synced
    and third, Forsyth County, Georgia.
  • Not Synced
    First stop, St. George,
  • Not Synced
a beautiful town of red rock landscapes.
  • Not Synced
    In the 1850s, Brigham Young
    dispatched families to St. George
  • Not Synced
    to grow cotton because
    of the hot, arid climate,
  • Not Synced
and so they called it Utah's Dixie,
  • Not Synced
and the name sticks to this day.
  • Not Synced
I approached my time in each Whitopia
    like an anthropologist.
  • Not Synced
I made detailed spreadsheets of all
the power brokers in the communities,
  • Not Synced
    who I needed to meet,
    where I needed to be,
  • Not Synced
and I threw myself with gusto
    in these communities.
  • Not Synced
I went to zoning board meetings,
  • Not Synced
    I went to Democratic clubs
    and Republican clubs.
  • Not Synced
    I went to poker nights.
  • Not Synced
    In St. George, I rented
    a home at the Entrada,
  • Not Synced
    one of the town's
    premiere gated communities.
  • Not Synced
    There were no Motel 6's
    or Howard Johnsons for me.
  • Not Synced
I lived in Whitopia as a resident,
  • Not Synced
    and not like a visitor.
  • Not Synced
I rented myself this home by phone.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter) (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Golf is the perfect seductive
    symbol of Whitopia.
  • Not Synced
When I went on my journey,
  • Not Synced
I had barely ever held a golf club.
  • Not Synced
By the time I left, I was golfing
at least three times a week.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Golf helps people bond.
  • Not Synced
Some of the best interviews I ever scored
  • Not Synced
during my trip were on the golf courses.
  • Not Synced
    One venture capitalist, for example,
    invited me to golf
  • Not Synced
    in his private club
  • Not Synced
    that had no minority members.
  • Not Synced
    I also went fishing.
  • Not Synced
    Because I had never fished,
this fellow had to teach me
  • Not Synced
how to cast my line and what bait to use.
  • Not Synced
I also played poker every weekend.
  • Not Synced
It was Texas Hold 'Em with a $10 buy-in.
  • Not Synced
My poker mates may have been bluffing
about the hands that they drew,
  • Not Synced
    but they weren't bluffing
    about their social beliefs.
  • Not Synced
    Some of the most raw,
    salty conversations I ever had
  • Not Synced
during my journey were at the poker table.
  • Not Synced
    I'm a gung ho entertainer.
  • Not Synced
I love to cook, I hosted
many dinner parties, and in return,
  • Not Synced
people invited me to their dinner parties,
  • Not Synced
    and to their barbecues,
    and to their pool parties,
  • Not Synced
    and to their birthday parties.
  • Not Synced
    But it wasn't all fun.
  • Not Synced
    Immigration turned out to be
a big issue in this Whitopia.
  • Not Synced
    The St. George's Citizens Council
    on Illegal Immigration
  • Not Synced
    held regular and active protests
    against immigration,
  • Not Synced
and so what I gleaned from this Whitopia
is what a hot debate this would become.
  • Not Synced
It was a real time preview,
  • Not Synced
    and so it has become.
  • Not Synced
    Next stop, Almost Heaven,
  • Not Synced
a cabin I rented for myself
  • Not Synced
in Coeur d'Alene, in the beautiful
    north Idaho panhandle.
  • Not Synced
I rented this place for myself
    also by phone.
  • Not Synced
    The book "A Thousand Places
    To See Before You Die"
  • Not Synced
    lists Coeur d'Alene.
  • Not Synced
    It's a gorgeous paradise
    for huntsmen, boatsmen, and fishermen.
  • Not Synced
    My growing golf skills
came in handy in Coeur d'Alene.
  • Not Synced
I golf with retired LAPD cops.
  • Not Synced
    In 1993, around 11,000 families
    and cops fled Los Angeles
  • Not Synced
    after the L.A. racial unrest
    for north Idaho,
  • Not Synced
    and they've built
    an ex-patriated community.
  • Not Synced
Given the conservatism of these cops,
  • Not Synced
there's no surprise that north Idaho
    has a strong gun culture.
  • Not Synced
In fact, it is said, north Idaho
has more gun dealers than gas stations.
  • Not Synced
So what's a resident to do to fit in?
  • Not Synced
    I hit the gun club.
  • Not Synced
    When I rented a gun,
    the gentleman behind the counter
  • Not Synced
    was perfectly pleasant and kind,
  • Not Synced
    until I showed him
my New York City driver's license.
  • Not Synced
    That's when he got nervous.
  • Not Synced
I'm not as bad a shot
as I thought I might have been.
  • Not Synced
What I learned from north Idaho
  • Not Synced
is the peculiar brand of paranoia
  • Not Synced
    that can permeate a community
  • Not Synced
when so many cops and guns are around.
  • Not Synced
In north Idaho, in my red pickup truck,
  • Not Synced
    I kept a notepad,
  • Not Synced
and in that notepad I counted
more Confederate flags than black people.
  • Not Synced
In north Idaho, I found Confederate flags
    on keychains, on cellphone paraphernalia,
  • Not Synced
    and on cars.
  • Not Synced
    About a seven minute drive
    from my hidden lake cabin
  • Not Synced
was the compound of Aryan Nations,
  • Not Synced
    the white supremacist group.
  • Not Synced
    America's Promise ministry,
  • Not Synced
the religious arm of Aryan Nations,
  • Not Synced
happened to have a three day
    retreat during my visit,
  • Not Synced
so I decided to crash it.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I'm the only non-Aryan journalist
I'm aware of ever to have done so.
  • Not Synced
    Among the many memorable
    episodes of that retreat
  • Not Synced
    is when Abe, an Aryan,
    sidled up next to me.
  • Not Synced
He slapped my knee, and he said, "Hey Rich,
I just want you to know one thing.
  • Not Synced
    We are not white supremacists.
    We are white separatists.
  • Not Synced
We don't think we're better than you,
  • Not Synced
we just want to be away from you."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Indeed, most white people in Whitopia
  • Not Synced
    are neither white supremacists
    or white separatists.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, they're not there
for explicitly racial reasons at all.
  • Not Synced
    Rather, they emigrate there
    for friendliness, comfort,
  • Not Synced
    security, safety,
  • Not Synced
    reasons that they implicitly
    associate to whiteness in itself.
  • Not Synced
    Next stop was Georgia.
  • Not Synced
In Georgia, I stayed in an exurb
    north of Atlanta.
  • Not Synced
    In Utah, I found poker.
  • Not Synced
    in Idaho, I found guns.
  • Not Synced
    In Georgia, I found God.
  • Not Synced
The way that I immersed myself
    in this Whitopia
  • Not Synced
    was to become active
    at First Redeemer Church,
  • Not Synced
    a megachurch that's so huge
    that it has golf carts
  • Not Synced
    to escort the congregants around
its many parking lots on campus.
  • Not Synced
I was active in the youth ministry,
  • Not Synced
    and for me, personally,
  • Not Synced
I was more comfortable in this Whitopia
  • Not Synced
than say, in a Colorado, or an Idaho,
    or even a suburban Boston.
  • Not Synced
That is because here in Georgia,
  • Not Synced
white people and black people are more
    historically familiar to one another.
  • Not Synced
I was less exotic in this Whitopia.
  • Not Synced
But what does it all mean?
  • Not Synced
    Whitopian dreaming, Whitopia migration,
  • Not Synced
    is a push-pull phenomenon,
  • Not Synced
    full of alarming pushes
    and alluring pulls,
  • Not Synced
and Whitopia operates at the level
    of conscious and unconscious bias.
  • Not Synced
It's possible for people to be in Whitopia
  • Not Synced
    not for racist reasons,
  • Not Synced
    though it has racist outcomes.
  • Not Synced
Many Whitopians feel pushed by illegals,
  • Not Synced
    social welfare abuse, minorities,
  • Not Synced
    density, crowded schools.
  • Not Synced
Many Whitopians feel pulled by merit,
  • Not Synced
    freedom, the allure of privatism,
  • Not Synced
    privatized places, privatized people,
  • Not Synced
    privatized things.
  • Not Synced
    And I learned in Whitopia
  • Not Synced
how a country can have racism
  • Not Synced
    without racists.
  • Not Synced
Many of my smug urban liberal friends
  • Not Synced
    couldn't believe I would go
    on such a venture.
  • Not Synced
The reality is that many white Americans
  • Not Synced
    are affable and kind.
  • Not Synced
    Interpersonal race relations,
  • Not Synced
how we treat each other as human beings,
  • Not Synced
    is vastly better than in
    my parents' generation.
  • Not Synced
    Can you imagine me going
    to Whitopia 40 years ago?
  • Not Synced
What a journey that would have been.
  • Not Synced
And yet some things haven't changed.
  • Not Synced
    America is as residentially
  • Not Synced
    and educationally segregated today
  • Not Synced
    as it was in 1970.
  • Not Synced
As Americans, we often find ways
    to cook for each other,
  • Not Synced
    to dance with each other,
  • Not Synced
    to host with each other,
  • Not Synced
    but why can't that translate
into how we treat each other
  • Not Synced
    as communities?
  • Not Synced
    It's a devastating irony,
  • Not Synced
how we have gone forward as individuals
  • Not Synced
    and backward as communities.
  • Not Synced
    One of the Whitopian outlooks
  • Not Synced
    that really hit me
  • Not Synced
    was a proverbial saying:
  • Not Synced
    "One black man
    is a delightful dinner guest,
  • Not Synced
50 black men is a ghetto."
  • Not Synced
    One of the big contexts
  • Not Synced
    animating my Whitopian journey
  • Not Synced
    was the year 2042.
  • Not Synced
    By 2042, white people
  • Not Synced
will no longer be the American majority.
  • Not Synced
As such, will there be more Whitopias?
  • Not Synced
    In looking at this,
    the danger of Whitopia is
  • Not Synced
that the more segregation we have,
  • Not Synced
the less we can look at and confront
  • Not Synced
    conscious and unconscious bias.
  • Not Synced
    I ventured on my two-year,
    27,000 mile journey
  • Not Synced
to learn where, why, and how
    white people are fleeing,
  • Not Synced
but I didn't expect to have
so much fun on my journey.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't expect to learn
    so much about myself.
  • Not Synced
    I don't expect I'll be living
    in a Whitopia
  • Not Synced
or a Blacktopia, for that matter.
  • Not Synced
I do plan to continue golfing
    every chance I get.
  • Not Synced
And I'll just have to leave the guns
    and megachurches back in Whitopia.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
