WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Imagine a place 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where your neighbors greet your children by name, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a place with splendid vistas, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a place where you can drive just 20 minutes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and put your sailboat on the water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a seductive place, isn't it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't live there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I did journey 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on a 27,000 mile trip for two years 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the fastest-growing and whitest counties in America. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What is a Whitopia? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I define Whitopia in three ways. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 First, a Whitopia has posted at least six percent population growth since 2000. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Secondly, the majority of that growth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 comes from white migrants, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and third, the Whitopia has an ineffable charm, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a pleasant look and feel, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a je ne sais quoi. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To learn how and why Whitopias are ticking, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I immersed myself for several months apiece 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in three of them: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 first, St. George, Utah; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 second, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and third, Forsyth County, Georgia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 First stop, St. George, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a beautiful town of red rock landscapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the 1850s, Brigham Young dispatched families to St. George 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to grow cotton because of the hot, arid climate, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and so they called it Utah's Dixie, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the name sticks to this day. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I approached my time in each Whitopia like an anthropologist. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I made detailed spreadsheets of all the power brokers in the communities, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who I needed to meet, where I needed to be, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I threw myself with gusto in these communities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I went to zoning board meetings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I went to Democratic clubs and Republican clubs. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I went to poker nights. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In St. George, I rented a home at the Entrada, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one of the town's premiere gated communities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There were no Motel 6's or Howard Johnsons for me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I lived in Whitopia as a resident, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and not like a visitor. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I rented myself this home by phone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Golf is the perfect seductive symbol of Whitopia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I went on my journey, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I had barely ever held a golf club. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By the time I left, I was golfing at least three times a week. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Golf helps people bond. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of the best interviews I ever scored 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 during my trip were on the golf courses. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One venture capitalist, for example, invited me to golf 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in his private club 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that had no minority members. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I also went fishing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because I had never fished, this fellow had to teach me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how to cast my line and what bait to use. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I also played poker every weekend. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was Texas Hold 'Em with a $10 buy-in. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My poker mates may have been bluffing about the hands that they drew, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but they weren't bluffing about their social beliefs. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of the most raw, salty conversations I ever had 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 during my journey were at the poker table. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm a gung ho entertainer. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I love to cook, I hosted many dinner parties, and in return, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people invited me to their dinner parties, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and to their barbecues, and to their pool parties, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and to their birthday parties. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it wasn't all fun. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Immigration turned out to be a big issue in this Whitopia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The St. George's Citizens Council on Illegal Immigration 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 held regular and active protests against immigration, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and so what I gleaned from this Whitopia is what a hot debate this would become. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was a real time preview, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and so it has become. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Next stop, Almost Heaven, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a cabin I rented for myself 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in Coeur d'Alene, in the beautiful north Idaho panhandle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I rented this place for myself also by phone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The book "A Thousand Places To See Before You Die" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 lists Coeur d'Alene. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a gorgeous paradise for huntsmen, boatsmen, and fishermen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My growing golf skills came in handy in Coeur d'Alene. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I golf with retired LAPD cops. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In 1993, around 11,000 families and cops fled Los Angeles 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after the L.A. racial unrest for north Idaho, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they've built an ex-patriated community. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Given the conservatism of these cops, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there's no surprise that north Idaho has a strong gun culture. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In fact, it is said, north Idaho has more gun dealers than gas stations. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what's a resident to do to fit in? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I hit the gun club. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I rented a gun, the gentleman behind the counter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was perfectly pleasant and kind, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 until I showed him my New York City driver's license. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's when he got nervous. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm not as bad a shot as I thought I might have been. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What I learned from north Idaho 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is the peculiar brand of paranoia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that can permeate a community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when so many cops and guns are around. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In north Idaho, in my red pickup truck, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I kept a notepad, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and in that notepad I counted more Confederate flags than black people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In north Idaho, I found Confederate flags on keychains, on cellphone paraphernalia, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and on cars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 About a seven minute drive from my hidden lake cabin 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was the compound of Aryan Nations, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the white supremacist group. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 America's Promise ministry, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the religious arm of Aryan Nations, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 happened to have a three day retreat during my visit, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so I decided to crash it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm the only non-Aryan journalist I'm aware of ever to have done so. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Among the many memorable episodes of that retreat 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is when Abe, an Aryan, sidled up next to me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He slapped my knee, and he said, "Hey Rich, I just want you to know one thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are not white supremacists. We are white separatists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't think we're better than you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we just want to be away from you." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Indeed, most white people in Whitopia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are neither white supremacists or white separatists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In fact, they're not there for explicitly racial reasons at all. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Rather, they emigrate there for friendliness, comfort, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 security, safety, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 reasons that they implicitly associate to whiteness in itself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Next stop was Georgia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Georgia, I stayed in an exurb north of Atlanta. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Utah, I found poker. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in Idaho, I found guns. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Georgia, I found God. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The way that I immersed myself in this Whitopia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was to become active at First Redeemer Church, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a megachurch that's so huge that it has golf carts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to escort the congregants around its many parking lots on campus. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was active in the youth ministry, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and for me, personally, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was more comfortable in this Whitopia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than say, in a Colorado, or an Idaho, or even a suburban Boston. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That is because here in Georgia, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 white people and black people are more historically familiar to one another. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was less exotic in this Whitopia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But what does it all mean? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whitopian dreaming, Whitopia migration, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a push-pull phenomenon, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 full of alarming pushes and alluring pulls, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Whitopia operates at the level of conscious and unconscious bias. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's possible for people to be in Whitopia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not for racist reasons, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 though it has racist outcomes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many Whitopians feel pushed by illegals, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 social welfare abuse, minorities, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 density, crowded schools. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many Whitopians feel pulled by merit, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 freedom, the allure of privatism, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 privatized places, privatized people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 privatized things. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I learned in Whitopia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how a country can have racism 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 without racists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many of my smug urban liberal friends 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 couldn't believe I would go on such a venture. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The reality is that many white Americans 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are affable and kind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Interpersonal race relations, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how we treat each other as human beings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is vastly better than in my parents' generation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Can you imagine me going to Whitopia 40 years ago? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What a journey that would have been. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And yet some things haven't changed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 America is as residentially 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and educationally segregated today 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as it was in 1970. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As Americans, we often find ways to cook for each other, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to dance with each other, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to host with each other, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but why can't that translate into how we treat each other 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as communities? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a devastating irony, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how we have gone forward as individuals 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and backward as communities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of the Whitopian outlooks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that really hit me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was a proverbial saying: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "One black man is a delightful dinner guest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 50 black men is a ghetto." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of the big contexts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 animating my Whitopian journey 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was the year 2042. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By 2042, white people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 will no longer be the American majority. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As such, will there be more Whitopias? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In looking at this, the danger of Whitopia is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the more segregation we have, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the less we can look at and confront 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 conscious and unconscious bias. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I ventured on my two-year, 27,000 mile journey 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to learn where, why, and how white people are fleeing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I didn't expect to have so much fun on my journey. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I didn't expect to learn so much about myself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't expect I'll be living in a Whitopia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or a Blacktopia, for that matter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I do plan to continue golfing every chance I get. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I'll just have to leave the guns and megachurches back in Whitopia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
