Ebola easier to stop now than later - Rosling's Factpod #6

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    I am professor Hans Rosling,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
and I follow day by day
  • 0:05 - 0:09
    the informations about
the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
    The epidemic is getting
    worse, especially in Liberia.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    This graph shows
  • 0:15 - 0:17
the number of newly infected persons
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    per week in Liberia.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    Here, it shows
    the number of persons infected;
  • 0:22 - 0:26
here, of the weeks, from the end of July
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    until beginning of September.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    And you can see,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    that the number infected
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    kept increasing and increasing
    all the time.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    The doctors and health staff
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    and the Government in Liberia
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    did their best, together
    with the international support
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    but the treatments have today.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    Patients die in the streets,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    or they die at home,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    buried without protection.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
So more and more are getting infected.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
And the specialists have now done
    a prediction for the future;
  • 0:57 - 1:03
    each patient here infects
    on average 1,7 other persons.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
And that means that just more
and more and more will be infected.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
So the epidemic, with present efforts,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    will continue like this.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    And this is the uncertainty range;
  • 1:15 - 1:17
this means that it is possible
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    that it will go
    almost straight up like this.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
But this epidemic can be stopped
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    if just enough hospitals,
    temporary hospitals,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
with enough beds, are put in place,
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    so that all patients
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    with suspected or proven Ebola
  • 1:34 - 1:36
can get the best treatment possible
  • 1:36 - 1:39
and that they can be treated in a way
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    so they don't infect other,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
and that those who tragically die
  • 1:43 - 1:48
    are buried without infecting others.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
But it must be put in place now,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
otherwise it will continue like this!
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    And then, so much
    more effort will be needed.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
The sooner the help will come,
  • 1:58 - 2:09
    the less resources are needed.
