A 12-year-old app developer | Thomas Suarez | TEDxManhattanBeach
-
0:05 - 0:08Hello everyone,
my name is Thomas Suarez. -
0:08 - 0:12I've always had a fascination
for computers and technology, -
0:12 - 0:14and I made a few apps for the iPhone,
-
0:14 - 0:15iPod Touch, and iPad.
-
0:15 - 0:18I'd like to share a couple with you today.
-
0:18 - 0:22My first app was a unique fortune teller
called Earth Fortune -
0:22 - 0:25that would display
different colors of Earth -
0:25 - 0:28depending on what your fortune was.
-
0:28 - 0:30My favorite and most successful app
-
0:31 - 0:34is Bustin Jieber - (Laughter) -
-
0:34 - 0:37which is a Justin Bieber Whac-A-Mole.
-
0:39 - 0:42I created it because
a lot of people at school -
0:42 - 0:44disliked Justin Bieber a little bit,
-
0:44 - 0:47so I decided to make the app.
-
0:48 - 0:50So I went to work programming it,
-
0:50 - 0:53and I released it just
before the holidays in 2010. -
0:54 - 0:57A lot of people ask me,
how did I make these? -
0:58 - 1:01A lot of times it's because
the person who asked the question -
1:01 - 1:03wants to make an app also.
-
1:03 - 1:05A lot of kids these days
like to play games, -
1:06 - 1:08but now they want to make them,
-
1:08 - 1:09and it's difficult,
-
1:09 - 1:12because not many kids know where to go
-
1:12 - 1:14to find out how to make a program.
-
1:14 - 1:17I mean, for soccer,
you could go to a soccer team. -
1:17 - 1:20For violin, you could get lessons
for a violin. -
1:20 - 1:22But what if you want to make an app?
-
1:22 - 1:24And the kid's parents might have done
-
1:24 - 1:27some of these things when they were young,
-
1:27 - 1:29but not many parents have written apps.
(Laughter) -
1:30 - 1:33Where do you go to find out
how to make an app? -
1:33 - 1:36Well, this is how I approached it.
This is what I did. -
1:36 - 1:38First of all, I've been programming
-
1:38 - 1:42in multiple other programming languages
to get the basics down, -
1:42 - 1:45such as Python, C, Java, etc.
-
1:47 - 1:49And then Apple released the iPhone,
-
1:50 - 1:52and with it, the iPhone
software development kit, -
1:52 - 1:56and the software development kit
is a suite of tools -
1:56 - 1:59for creating and programming
an iPhone app. -
2:00 - 2:03This opened up a whole new world
of possibilities for me, -
2:03 - 2:07and after playing with
the software development kit a little bit, -
2:07 - 2:10I made a couple apps,
I made some test apps. -
2:10 - 2:13One of them happened to be
Earth Fortune, -
2:13 - 2:16and I was ready to put Earth Fortune
on the App Store, -
2:16 - 2:20and so I persuaded my parents
to pay the 99 dollar fee -
2:20 - 2:23to be able to put my apps
on the App Store. -
2:23 - 2:26They agreed, and now I have
apps on the App Store. -
2:27 - 2:30I've gotten a lot of interest
and encouragement -
2:30 - 2:32from my family, friends, teachers
-
2:32 - 2:33and even people at the Apple Store,
-
2:33 - 2:36and that's been a huge help to me.
-
2:36 - 2:39I've gotten a lot
of inspiration from Steve Jobs, -
2:39 - 2:42and I've started an app club at school,
-
2:44 - 2:48and a teacher at my school
is kindly sponsoring my app club. -
2:48 - 2:51Any student at my school can come
-
2:51 - 2:53and learn how to design an app.
-
2:54 - 2:57This is so I can share
my experiences with others. -
2:59 - 3:02There's these programs called
the iPad Pilot Program, -
3:03 - 3:05and some districts have them.
-
3:05 - 3:07I'm fortunate enough to be part of one.
-
3:07 - 3:12A big challenge is,
how should the iPads be used, -
3:12 - 3:15and what apps should we put on the iPads?
-
3:15 - 3:18So we're getting feedback
from teachers at the school -
3:18 - 3:21to see what kind of apps they'd like.
-
3:21 - 3:23When we design the app and we sell it,
-
3:24 - 3:27it will be free to local
districts and other districts -
3:28 - 3:31that we sell to,
all the money from that -
3:31 - 3:33will go into the local ed foundations.
-
3:35 - 3:39These days, students usually
know a little bit more -
3:39 - 3:42than teachers with the technology.
(Laughter) -
3:46 - 3:49So - (Laughter) -
-
3:50 - 3:53sorry - (Laughter) -
-
3:55 - 3:57so this is a resource to teachers,
-
3:57 - 4:00and educators should recognize
this resource -
4:00 - 4:02and make good use of it.
-
4:03 - 4:07I'd like to finish up by saying
what I'd like to do in the future. -
4:08 - 4:12First of all, I'd like to create
more apps, more games. -
4:12 - 4:15I'm working with a third party
company to make an app. -
4:16 - 4:20I'd like to get into Android
programming and development, -
4:20 - 4:22and I'd like to continue my app club,
-
4:22 - 4:24and find other ways for students
-
4:24 - 4:26to share knowledge with others.
-
4:26 - 4:28Thank you.
(Applause)

- Description:
-
Most 12-year-olds love playing videogames -- Thomas Suarez taught himself how to create them. After developing iPhone apps like "Bustin Jeiber," a Whac-A-Mole game, he is now using his skills to help other kids become developers.
