The Road to Gender Equality - Malala’s story | Nations United

  • 0:20 - 0:21
    Just after I was born,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
my father got our family tree.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    It went back 300 years.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
But not a woman's name appeared on it.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
He decided to make me the first.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    He wrote Malala
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    That's me.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
When her father's school was closed down the Taliban
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    I have rights.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
I have the right of education,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
I have the right to play,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
I have the right to sing, to talk,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
I have the right to go to the market
  • 0:57 - 0:59
I have the right to speak up.
  • 0:59 - 1:11
    (music is playing)
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    (gunshot noise)
  • 1:16 - 1:18
They shot her in the head.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    She's still in critical condition.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
She was airlifted to a military hospital
  • 1:27 - 1:29
in Peshawar where she had surgery
  • 1:29 - 1:31
A surgeon's battle to safe her life.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    In this foto released today,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    Malala's eyes have opened.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
We have some really good news to report.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    Malala Yousafzai walked out
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    of the London hospital today.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Today,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
it is an honour for me
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    to be speaking again
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    after a long time.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    They thought that the bullet
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    would silent us.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    But they failed.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
My message right now is to young people.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
We are living in a world where
  • 2:28 - 2:30
things are not the way we want.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
We're getting a system, a world which is
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    unequal, sexist, racist.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
    They are discriminating aganist people.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
Our climate, our enviroment is at risk.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
And there's so much that needs to be done
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    But, I hope that
  • 2:47 - 2:51
young people stand up, raise their voices,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    start their activism right now.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
Let your age not stop you.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
Often times we are told that
  • 2:56 - 2:58
you have to be 14, 15 to change the world.
  • 2:58 - 2:59
I do not believe in that.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
I think you can be a change maker,
  • 3:01 - 3:01
    right now.
