Philosophisches Kopfkino - Existenz

  • 0:09 - 0:12
How do we know that we actually exist
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    and that we are real?
  • 0:14 - 0:17
Sure, we can look at ourselves
    in the mirror, pinch ourselves
  • 0:17 - 0:19
or bang our heads against the wall,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
But even that, could just be
    something that we imagine.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    However, how are we able
    to imagine something,
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    if we don't exist?
  • 0:27 - 0:29
And that's how we get to the
    crux of the matter:
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    When we question reality,
    if what we are seeing
  • 0:31 - 0:34
is real or not, there is always us.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    That isn't up for discussion.
  • 0:38 - 0:38
    But how can we be
    certain of our existence?
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    Precisely:
  • 0:39 - 0:39
    To be or not be,
    that is the question!
  • 0:39 - 0:40
The concept of `being' has the broadest
    definition by far,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    because it relates to
    everything conceivable.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
Relating to our house, our boat,
    our investment advisor
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    and, of course, ourselves!
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    "Everything that is conceivable,"
    therefore also means:
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    everything that "is not".
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    And all of that combined
    is infinite!
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    Boldly stated:
    nothing exists outside of being,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    as everything that exists
    is part of being.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
But that is only half the battle
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    Because being isn't
    equal to existence.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
In the Middle Ages, a distinction
    was made, that "existence",
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    which was necessary was the
    "necessary existence".
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    That which was essential for
    everyone and everything
  • 1:08 - 1:09
was the basis for all existence
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    and was naturally named God.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    There where the necessary lies,
    the unnecessary isn't far removed.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
Thus the 2nd kind of the existence
    was defined as "not necessary"...
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    simply things which nobody needs!
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    USB ashtrays, inflatable cell phone
    holders, breakfast eggplants,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    pasta in a cooking bag,
    microwave slippers.... okay.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Besides that which no one needs,
    there is also the existence
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    of that which is impossible:
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    the "impossible existence".
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    Does that mean that God
is unable to create a boulder
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    that he himself cannot lift!!!
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    Then how can something exist
    that is more powerful
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    than the necessary existence?
  • 2:03 - 2:04
Kant then came up with sensuality and experience...
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    his sources of understanding!
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    Should that then mean,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    that things appear to exist,
    as we experience them.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
His colleague Hegel saw it like this:
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    The unity of essence
    and appearance,
  • 2:17 - 2:21
of essence and existence is reality.
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    So, the being must appear,
    then being is existence
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    and the existence is being....
    Uh…Wait a moment
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    So, to summarise:
  • 2:29 - 2:31
the existence to which the being
attributes itself is the essential being.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    Simply put, the existence.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
Kierkegaard saw it differently yet again
    and thus
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    became the founder of the
    philosophy of existence:
  • 2:39 - 2:42
"Being itself, to which the being behaves
    in a particular way
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    and always somehow behaves,
    we call existence".
  • 2:46 - 2:50
By this he means that this existence
    is quite sufficient.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
It relates only to itself and
    not to a great absolute.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
I am me and I am responsible
    for getting along with myself.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    What else is …., I don't care!
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    So much to existence.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
And to not exists at all?
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    Martin Walser once said:
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    "Nothing is true without
    its opposite" Whoa!
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    So, it's that simple then.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
