The excess of garbage in the world | Bianca Marques | TEDxKids@PortoSeguroSchool
-
0:14 - 0:15Hi, everybody. How are you?
-
0:15 - 0:18I'm Bianca Marques, and I'm 10 years old.
-
0:18 - 0:20I was born in Marília,
a city in interior São Paulo state, -
0:20 - 0:23and I've been here
in São Paulo for two years. -
0:23 - 0:26Today I'm here to talk
about the excess of garbage in the world. -
0:26 - 0:27In the past few months,
-
0:27 - 0:30I realized that people
have only been talking about politics. -
0:30 - 0:32It's good to talk about politics,
-
0:32 - 0:36but many people blame
politicians for everything. -
0:36 - 0:38I know they do a lot of wrong things,
-
0:38 - 0:41but there are moments
when we have to stop and ponder. -
0:41 - 0:45Other problems depend
more on us than on politics, -
0:45 - 0:46such as the problem of garbage.
-
0:46 - 0:50Unfortunately, politicians don't invest
in the problem of garbage, -
0:50 - 0:53because it doesn't get them votes -
nobody sees it, nobody cares. -
0:53 - 0:55So we're the ones who have to act.
-
0:55 - 0:58Here in São Paulo, I realized
that garbage doesn't choose a place. -
0:58 - 1:02It's in the streets, schools, communities,
and even in upscale neighborhoods. -
1:03 - 1:07I'm very sad when I stop to think
that we cause this in the world. -
1:07 - 1:12But almost no one admits
that they throw garbage on the ground, -
1:12 - 1:14on the streets, in schools,
and even on the beach. -
1:14 - 1:16And they think, "It's only a plastic bag,
-
1:16 - 1:19it's only a juice box,
a bubble gum, a bag ... " -
1:19 - 1:21The "only" becomes a lot!
-
1:21 - 1:24I just don't understand
why these people keep doing this. -
1:25 - 1:28They're harming our planet,
where we all live. -
1:29 - 1:32One day, my teacher Cláudia
taught us a different class. -
1:32 - 1:34She talked about the excess of garbage.
-
1:34 - 1:37Her class was amazing,
and she encouraged me a lot. -
1:37 - 1:41I think it's really cool
when teachers talk about this topic -
1:41 - 1:45because they help people
become more aware, -
1:45 - 1:48and with a good class,
you can become more aware, -
1:48 - 1:49just like I did.
-
1:49 - 1:53After her class, I had more knowledge,
and I wanted to learn more. -
1:53 - 1:54I searched on the Internet
-
1:54 - 1:58to find out where the trash would end up,
and where people would throw it. -
1:58 - 2:01The garbage ends up
in landfills and dumps, -
2:01 - 2:04and only 3% of it is recycled.
-
2:04 - 2:08People throw it in schools,
on the streets, and even on the beach. -
2:08 - 2:10When you throw garbage -
-
2:13 - 2:16When you throw garbage on the beach -
-
2:17 - 2:21When you throw garbage on the beach,
the tide rises and takes it to the sea. -
2:21 - 2:25So aquatic animals eat it
because they confuse it with their food. -
2:25 - 2:26They may even die.
-
2:26 - 2:27Poor things!
-
2:27 - 2:29And when you throw garbage on the street,
-
2:30 - 2:33when it rains, it causes the floods
that worry us so much -
2:33 - 2:36when we're walking on the streets,
and it's raining. -
2:36 - 2:39Now have you realized
how dangerous garbage can be? -
2:39 - 2:43We have several options,
and they need to be done together: -
2:43 - 2:47donating, recycling, rethinking
public policies, and educating society. -
2:47 - 2:49We can't run away.
-
2:49 - 2:51We have to face it.
-
2:52 - 2:53I have a dream:
-
2:53 - 2:57that our world be sustainable
to create good opportunities for everyone -
2:57 - 3:02and that all people respect each other
without there being any differences. -
3:02 - 3:03I'll end here,
-
3:03 - 3:06and I hope you've enjoyed my presentation.
-
3:06 - 3:07Thank you very much.
-
3:07 - 3:09(Applause)
