Putting Meaning Into Life | Ajahn Brahm | 03-12-2010

  • Not Synced
The topic which has come up for me this evening,
  • Not Synced
one of the few experiences over the last week or 2 weeks
  • Not Synced
sometimes people have called me up, about to talk with them,
  • Not Synced
cause life can sometimes be quite depressing,
  • Not Synced
things don't really go the way they should.
  • Not Synced
All these problems in your life,
  • Not Synced
and people keep asking me what's the purpose of all this?
  • Not Synced
What the heck is this life all about?
  • Not Synced
Can you please give me sort of some
  • Not Synced
    great overview, the big plans,
  • Not Synced
so I know what the heck am I doing all this for,
  • Not Synced
why these things happen to me?
  • Not Synced
So this evening I am going to talk about the
  • Not Synced
very simple subject of "The meaning of life."
  • Not Synced
    Or rather than that,
  • Not Synced
    because even that subject
  • Not Synced
    is like becomes theoretical,
  • Not Synced
it becomes like some sort of idea,
  • Not Synced
so there is not going to be the slant
  • Not Synced
which I am going to give to this talk.
  • Not Synced
The slant that I am going to give is
  • Not Synced
not finding the meaning of life
  • Not Synced
but putting the meaning into your life.
  • Not Synced
    A totally different idea.
  • Not Synced
The meaning of life is describing to you some theory,
  • Not Synced
some religious view or spiritual view just to telling you
  • Not Synced
what to believe or how to look at life.
  • Not Synced
    But no, I'm telling you
  • Not Synced
how you put meaning into your life.
  • Not Synced
Because if you don't put meaning into your life,
  • Not Synced
you'll find that life does become quite meaningless.
  • Not Synced
And if you just wonder what's this all about
  • Not Synced
what are you doing this for,
  • Not Synced
there is nothing which can really give any drive,
  • Not Synced
    any passion in your life,
  • Not Synced
and I say this as a monk, because I'm a very passionate monk.
  • Not Synced
    The compassionate one, at least,
  • Not Synced
but you know I really put a lot of energy into whatever I do.
  • Not Synced
That is for me what passion is because
  • Not Synced
    you understand that
  • Not Synced
how to put something really important into your life,
  • Not Synced
    some meaning into your life.
  • Not Synced
And I found out that most people in this life,
  • Not Synced
who they do get depressed, who do sort of get
  • Not Synced
    negative, it is because
  • Not Synced
    they haven't learned
  • Not Synced
how to put meaning, the real meaning,
  • Not Synced
    the proper meaning into life.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, sure that people actually put a lot of energy
  • Not Synced
and struggle in their life just to getting
  • Not Synced
on in this world, to succeed.
  • Not Synced
The trouble is we don't know really what success is.
  • Not Synced
    When you were a kid,
  • Not Synced
    at school,
  • Not Synced
you think success is getting your grades at school,
  • Not Synced
    or at exams or whatever.
  • Not Synced
    And look, I mean that,
  • Not Synced
you should all know by now,
  • Not Synced
because how many of you did really well at school
  • Not Synced
and we can still be happy and find meaning in life?
  • Not Synced
Otherwise if you really have to just to be
  • Not Synced
the A-grade student, if they are the only ones
  • Not Synced
who have meaning in life, you might as well commit suicide
  • Not Synced
after grade 12 if you don't get to university which is a stupid idea.
  • Not Synced
    But you find out that,
  • Not Synced
that is not the real meaning in life.
  • Not Synced
So you find out most people they find out,
  • Not Synced
and they try it , and
  • Not Synced
    they assume that other people
  • Not Synced
know what the meaning of life is.
  • Not Synced
And they just follow other people like sheep,
  • Not Synced
and because they follow other people like sheep,
  • Not Synced
yeah, you do work hard at school
  • Not Synced
because that's what your parents and
  • Not Synced
    teachers told you to do.
  • Not Synced
And think, if I do this right then I'll
  • Not Synced
find some meaning in life, I'll find happiness.
  • Not Synced
And then afterwards you go to work and you think
  • Not Synced
you can find meaning in just your bank balance
  • Not Synced
or your possessions or whatever else that you
  • Not Synced
start to attain life, and then
  • Not Synced
    you start questioning that,
  • Not Synced
    that doesnt really give you
  • Not Synced
    what everyone promised you.
  • Not Synced
Certainly that was my life, you know, going to school,
  • Not Synced
I did really work, I did work hard, so I got
  • Not Synced
this great degree from Cambridge University.
  • Not Synced
I mean that was just a big downer afterwards.
  • Not Synced
    Is this it?
  • Not Synced
You know, all this which I was promised,
  • Not Synced
all that hard work which I did to getting a big degree
  • Not Synced
    from a big university?
  • Not Synced
    So what?
  • Not Synced
And then one of the reasons I became a monk,
  • Not Synced
one of the reasons I never went further in
  • Not Synced
    academic career
  • Not Synced
is because you could see at universities
  • Not Synced
like Cambridge where you socialised with
  • Not Synced
the lecturers and with the professors and with the dons.
  • Not Synced
Look some of those people have Nobel prizes.
  • Not Synced
    I mean,
  • Not Synced
these were the top, the elite of academia.
  • Not Synced
    You talk with them
  • Not Synced
and just realised that these people haven't got it together.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, they were brilliant in their field but
  • Not Synced
    they were stupid in life.
  • Not Synced
You know just, I'm rambling on here,
  • Not Synced
but one of the people which we met here,
  • Not Synced
with Dennis, our president, Roger Pennrose came
  • Not Synced
into town some years ago and he's
  • Not Synced
    Mr. Blackhole.
  • Not Synced
He's the guy who discovered black hole.
  • Not Synced
So Roger Pennrose, one of the greatest physicists of our age,
  • Not Synced
probably up there with Stephen Hawkings.
  • Not Synced
And he came and Dennis our president,
  • Not Synced
so we went to have dinner with him.
  • Not Synced
And, cause I'm well connected with the physicists
  • Not Synced
    over here.
  • Not Synced
    It's actually, it's really amazing,
  • Not Synced
all these dinner, all the other people there,
  • Not Synced
they were sort of from, they were NASA, they were
  • Not Synced
professor of Physics from all over the place,
  • Not Synced
and I was only, sort of, the Buddhist monk. [laughter]
  • Not Synced
But anyone from religion which actually shows
  • Not Synced
just how Buddhism and even just elite Physics,
  • Not Synced
    we can actually melt together.
  • Not Synced
But you even look at this person who was so brilliant in his field
  • Not Synced
but you couldn't have a conversation with him.
  • Not Synced
And do you remember this Dennis?
  • Not Synced
We were all just talking with each other,
  • Not Synced
even I was just chatting about all sorts of stuff
  • Not Synced
    with these people from NASA
  • Not Synced
and he was actually standing by himself,
  • Not Synced
no one was talking with him.
  • Not Synced
I was wondering that he is brilliant in front of the lecture theatre, apparently,
  • Not Synced
he's brilliant, you know, on a piece of paper
  • Not Synced
but he hasn't got his life together.
  • Not Synced
It was meeting people like that, I thought,
  • Not Synced
that's not the meaning in life, becoming a great academic.
  • Not Synced
It's not the meaning in life becoming really rich people.
  • Not Synced
Also at Cambridge, you know one of other people I knew,
  • Not Synced
he was real Lord, he was an Earl.
  • Not Synced
That's really great going around with a Lord, I mean a real Lord, an Earl.
  • Not Synced
I know a Viscount, I forget one, he was a real pain in the butt.
  • Not Synced
Why do you want to have these honours for if you don't just, [laughter]
  • Not Synced
a hopeless person to be around.
  • Not Synced
So, you know, for me, I ticked off boxes earlier on in life.
  • Not Synced
This was not why I was going to find my meaning in life.
  • Not Synced
And it was actually good, ticking off those boxes early.
  • Not Synced
You know, it's just fame, sort of, being a great academic,
  • Not Synced
or being, sort of, it was also these great sports people.
  • Not Synced
There was this college I was at in Man U.
  • Not Synced
It was. that time, it was like a sporting college
  • Not Synced
many top sports people went there.
  • Not Synced
And one of the people I befriended over there
  • Not Synced
was a guy called Majid Khan, he was an international
  • Not Synced
cricketeer, played for Pakistan and now I think he is
  • Not Synced
    an international umpire.
  • Not Synced
I went to college with this guy.
  • Not Synced
Even that time, you know, he was playing for Pakistan
  • Not Synced
even though but he was in college.
  • Not Synced
And again, even those elite sportsman, actually, he was
  • Not Synced
actually more, had his act together.
  • Not Synced
He's a lot of fun to be with but still
  • Not Synced
    there was something missing there.
  • Not Synced
And then later as you become a monk, you get
  • Not Synced
into all echelons of society as a monk.
  • Not Synced
The doors are opened to me which will be closed to all of you guys.
  • Not Synced
I can go into autopsies and see bodies being cut up.
  • Not Synced
You know, and that's really fascinating there.
  • Not Synced
I really recommend it, if you were looking
  • Not Synced
for something to do over Christmas period. [laughter]
  • Not Synced
We also actually go and meet these sort of, the top notch,
  • Not Synced
    the very wealthy people.
  • Not Synced
I think I was, I'm pretty sure that when I went to this dinner over
  • Not Synced
in Canberra once, I going into the toilet,
  • Not Synced
I didn't recognise him at the time but seen pictures afterwards,
  • Not Synced
    it was Lord Murdoch.
  • Not Synced
I wished I had taken a donation envelope with me for
  • Not Synced
    the Bangladesh orphanage.
  • Not Synced
That's with Murdoch's son, you meet all these
  • Not Synced
    wealthy people, presidents and stuff.
  • Not Synced
But you think, is that really what life is all about?
  • Not Synced
And it's not, it's something else there.
  • Not Synced
So when you look for meaning in life or when
  • Not Synced
you put meaning in life, make sure that what you're
  • Not Synced
really developing in your life is something
  • Not Synced
    which really does have meaning.
  • Not Synced
And to me, just power, fame, wealth,
  • Not Synced
I've ticked off those boxes a long time ago,
  • Not Synced
and that has no real meaning,
  • Not Synced
it has no real satisfaction in the end for you.
  • Not Synced
Now to give you a story about that,
  • Not Synced
there're so many stories about just the, what might you call the disillusionment
  • Not Synced
which all comes when you get wealth.
  • Not Synced
There's so many stories about that.
  • Not Synced
The story which I mentioned a few days ago, I think, I'm not quite sure where I said this or what I've said .
  • Not Synced
Somebody sent me an email about this couple in UK who won the lottery.
  • Not Synced
    They got instant about GBP40million.
  • Not Synced
So they bought this huge mansion, one year later they sold that mansion.
  • Not Synced
The reason they sold that mansion was they couldn't find their kids.
  • Not Synced
    It was just too big.
  • Not Synced
So there they were in this dream mansion, just what sometimes, you'd drool over which sometimes
  • Not Synced
you see maybe in the TV or you see maybe in the magazines
  • Not Synced
or you may go past if you go driving down Peppermint Grove
  • Not Synced
Wow wouldnt it be amazing living in a huge place like that
  • Not Synced
    with manicured gardens,
  • Not Synced
swimming pools, and with people to serve you whatever you needed.
  • Not Synced
But then, you think about what happens to a person in there.
  • Not Synced
And this was someone who'd been there and done that,
  • Not Synced
because the house had so many rooms, they could never find
  • Not Synced
    their kids.
  • Not Synced
Always had to send a search party out to see which room they were in.
  • Not Synced
And because of that, they realised that something was terribly, terribly missing in their life.
  • Not Synced
Family, relationships, a bit of love.
  • Not Synced
I was in that many times.
  • Not Synced
Another time, this, talking about big mansions, we went to a blessing ceremony's big mansion
  • Not Synced
in Shelley by the river, one of these very huge ones.
  • Not Synced
When I went in there, was it a Thai or Chinese lady, I forget now.
  • Not Synced
But anyway when we went in there to do the blessing ceremony
  • Not Synced
for her new house, she just moved in, she wanted the monks to go in.
  • Not Synced
That was the time when I just come all the way from Serpentine from the monastery to Shelley,
  • Not Synced
one of the first things I did, I said,
  • Not Synced
    "Can I use your toilet?"
  • Not Synced
And this is no joke, she had to draw me a map
  • Not Synced
of how to get to the toilet in her house. [laughter]
  • Not Synced
    It's ridiculous.
  • Not Synced
But then afterwards when we were chatting together, after doing the ceremony,
  • Not Synced
I said, "How many people live here?"
  • Not Synced
    She said, "Only me."
  • Not Synced
And that was, that wasn't funny, that really hurt me
  • Not Synced
cause you know, you have empathy for people.
  • Not Synced
You know, these are the people you care about.
  • Not Synced
And when she said, "Only me", you could see just the pain in that expression.
  • Not Synced
There was a woman filthy rich staying in a huge mansion,
  • Not Synced
    all alone.
  • Not Synced
I asked her,"Why didnt anyone stay with you?"
  • Not Synced
and she said, "I'm afraid of my family.
  • Not Synced
I'm afraid they will ask me for money, ask me for a loan. I'm afraid of any friends.
  • Not Synced
I don't know if they are my friends, because I'm rich,
  • Not Synced
they want a loan or they want to borrow some or want a
  • Not Synced
    gift or something.
  • Not Synced
Because I don't trust anybody, not even my family, that is why,
  • Not Synced
    I'm alone."
  • Not Synced
And I thought that was a person who was imprisoned
  • Not Synced
    by their wealth.
  • Not Synced
    They weren't free at all.
  • Not Synced
If I was them, I'd say, "Take that wealth and burn it."
  • Not Synced
And have some freedom, cause what else, more meaning in life?
  • Not Synced
Being free and just being able to enjoy your family and friends and have a great time together
  • Not Synced
    or having that great wealth.
  • Not Synced
So please in our life, forget about the lottery tickets.
  • Not Synced
You're not going to win anyway.
  • Not Synced
And if you do, that's even worse.
  • Not Synced
Forget about just getting the advancement in your work.
  • Not Synced
Because, yes, you sort of, get the upgrade in your work, and you get a bigger salary
  • Not Synced
but it means, you know, you have to work so much harder, so much longer, with more stress,
  • Not Synced
and you don't see your family, your health goes down.
  • Not Synced
Is that what you really want to do in life?
  • Not Synced
I'm very, very impressed with people who actually turn down the promotion.
  • Not Synced
So you know, this is enough for me.
  • Not Synced
I want to be home at 5 pm or 6pm to be with my kids.
  • Not Synced
I want to have those holidays where I don't have to worry
  • Not Synced
that you are going to sms me to come back to the office
  • Not Synced
because there is some important contract to fix up.
  • Not Synced
Cause at least they've got some understanding of
  • Not Synced
the meaning of life and they are putting that meaning
  • Not Synced
    into their life.
  • Not Synced
I know many people talk about this, but
  • Not Synced
it really is up to you to take hold of your life
  • Not Synced
and not just be a victim and just go along with life
  • Not Synced
and just allow these things to happen to you.
  • Not Synced
    You do have that choice.
  • Not Synced
As they say in Buddhism "You are the owner of your karma."
  • Not Synced
It's a very powerful statement which we don't really say enough
  • Not Synced
    - you are the owner of your karma.
  • Not Synced
In other words, you know you have it in your hands.
  • Not Synced
You have in your hands to guide into your future
  • Not Synced
and really do put meaning into your life.
  • Not Synced
So yeah, I mean, you need some work
  • Not Synced
but please have great jobs, but fulfulling jobs, doesn't mean your bank balance
  • Not Synced
it means, when you go home at the end of the week,
  • Not Synced
yeah, you have got enough money to pay the bills.
  • Not Synced
You feel you're actually doing something useful for the world as well.
  • Not Synced
Cause in those days which I had at university,
  • Not Synced
it was fortunate that we did have time. We had time to reflect
  • Not Synced
and that's actually an important thing in your life
  • Not Synced
to take that time out, not to do things, but just to stand back and
  • Not Synced
just to reflect upon your life and which way it's going
  • Not Synced
    and how it's going and
  • Not Synced
what is really important to you in life.
  • Not Synced
Because we are coming to the end of this year,
  • Not Synced
    you know, December already.
  • Not Synced
And it's a great time, when things end,
  • Not Synced
it does give the opportunity to stop
  • Not Synced
and reflect because life goes on so fast,
  • Not Synced
it's like a train which never stops so you can't get out and think just,
  • Not Synced
"Where the heck am I and which way am I going?"
  • Not Synced
This time of the year is great for that.
  • Not Synced
You have holidays, and so don't fill your holidays up with all these activities.
  • Not Synced
    Don't just think,
  • Not Synced
I have to get this out of the way, I have to get that out of the way,
  • Not Synced
all these jobs which have been building up for the year.
  • Not Synced
If just get jobs out of the way,
  • Not Synced
you'll find that life gets out of the way.
  • Not Synced
That's one of the things which I have seen myself doing in the monastery
  • Not Synced
cause I've got lots of business.
  • Not Synced
I've got lots of responsibilities and work to do.
  • Not Synced
Lots of things to fix up and to settle and to do.
  • Not Synced
    But sometimes I catch myself,
  • Not Synced
I say, I've got to get this out of the way and that out of the way
  • Not Synced
    and then I'll meditate.
  • Not Synced
And you find that you don't meditate at all, you don't stop.
  • Not Synced
So I decided, no, I get peace out of the way, first of all. [chuckle]
  • Not Synced
I get that done first of all then I do all my other jobs.
  • Not Synced
Reminds me of one of the old monk jokes.
  • Not Synced
They aren't actually real Buddhist jokes.
  • Not Synced
    This is a joke about,
  • Not Synced
I may have told this a couple of weeks ago,
  • Not Synced
but I'm losing my mind, I don't mind
  • Not Synced
but if I've told last week what I told this week,
  • Not Synced
who cares anyway, but just a good joke. If you've heard it before,
  • Not Synced
    it's a golden oldie.
  • Not Synced
    - about the monk who was called up in his monastery by someone,
  • Not Synced
"Can you please come round to do a blessing at my house?"
  • Not Synced
The monk said, "I'm sorry, I'm busy, I can't come."
  • Not Synced
And the caller said, "What are you doing, monk?"
  • Not Synced
He said, "I'm doing nothing. That's what monks are supposed to do,nothing."
  • Not Synced
And the caller understood and he appreciate, "Monks are supposed
  • Not Synced
to be left the world and find peace and not just be in the monastery doing things all day.
  • Not Synced
That's the purpose of being a monk or a nun,
  • Not Synced
just sit out there and just to contemplate life
  • Not Synced
and to be still and to be peaceful and to let go of things
  • Not Synced
and just sit under a tree and just watch the trees grow, that's what we are supposed to be doing.
  • Not Synced
So the man actually understood that.
  • Not Synced
He said, "Ok, very good, monk."
  • Not Synced
So he rang the next day, he said, "Look, I really need you to do a blessing, can you come to my house?"
  • Not Synced
    He said, "No, I'm busy."
  • Not Synced
"That's what you said yesterday, what are you doing?"
  • Not Synced
"I'm doing nothing" said the monk.
  • Not Synced
"But you said that's what you were doing yesterday!".
  • Not Synced
And the monk replied, "Yes, but I'm not finished yet." [laughter]
  • Not Synced
Now that's not just a funny joke.
  • Not Synced
There has a meaning to it, there has oomph behind it.
  • Not Synced
So, look, somebody, sort of your wife says you know, "Can you come give me a hand."
  • Not Synced
    "Darling, but I'm busy."
  • Not Synced
    "What are you doing?"
  • Not Synced
    "Nothing."
  • Not Synced
"How long is it going to take?"
  • Not Synced
"I don't know, maybe so, all my life."
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
Maybe that's going too far but isn't it really important?
  • Not Synced
Actually, it's to have this great opportunity actually, you do
  • Not Synced
    nothing.
  • Not Synced
So you can actually stand back and just allow life to actually reflect itself on you.
  • Not Synced
Only when the water is still can you actually stand over and see your face clearly.
  • Not Synced
Now only when you stop rushing around doing things,
  • Not Synced
you can actually see what you are doing.
  • Not Synced
And see what the meaning of life truly is.
  • Not Synced
That is why, you know, we have monasteries where you can go and stay,
  • Not Synced
that's why we have retreat centres.
  • Not Synced
Retreat centres are not, so you can enlightened,
  • Not Synced
not so you can get jhanas.
  • Not Synced
The retreat centres are there, so you can stop
  • Not Synced
    and just do nothing
  • Not Synced
and just see what's going on.
  • Not Synced
    Cos everywhere else, you just,
  • Not Synced
if you do stop, people say, "What are you doing?"
  • Not Synced
    "Do nothing?"
  • Not Synced
"Can you come give me a hand then?"
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
They don't allow you to be free.
  • Not Synced
They don't allow you to be still.
  • Not Synced
So, these are places where you can be still.
  • Not Synced
And it's in those stillnesses you find
  • Not Synced
what the meaning of life is.
  • Not Synced
And once you know what the meaning of life is,
  • Not Synced
you can put it into your life.
  • Not Synced
So when people get very depressed or they
  • Not Synced
    lose their way in life,
  • Not Synced
please, you know, go to the monasteries
  • Not Synced
which we have over here, the great places
  • Not Synced
    where you can just come,
  • Not Synced
sit, you don't have to stay the night,
  • Not Synced
you just go to the meditation hall,
  • Not Synced
and just sit and do nothing.
  • Not Synced
Don't ask the meaning of life, don't go seeking it.
  • Not Synced
Just be still so you can know it.
  • Not Synced
Because the point is the meaning of life is
  • Not Synced
    not a theory.
  • Not Synced
It's not some sort of you,
  • Not Synced
you can write in a book, that's why we don't write books
  • Not Synced
    in meditation monk monasteries,
  • Not Synced
    it's not a bible, it's not a Koran,
  • Not Synced
as I've told you many, many times.
  • Not Synced
People ask me, when you go to schools or universities, and they say the old question,
  • Not Synced
yeah in Christianity we have the bible, in Judaism we the Torah or Capella,
  • Not Synced
in Islam we have the Koran,
  • Not Synced
so what do you have in Buddhism?
  • Not Synced
We have Arahant, that's what we read, that's our holy book,
  • Not Synced
    right in here.
  • Not Synced
In other words you stop reading outside.
  • Not Synced
If you have a book, it's just a mirror so
  • Not Synced
    you can experience what's inside.
  • Not Synced
So it's the experience, especially in stillness, that's our holy book.
  • Not Synced
That's why we don't argue so much.
  • Not Synced
That's why Buddhism doesnt really have wars,
  • Not Synced
I mean real Buddhism, not organised Buddhism.
  • Not Synced
    Real Buddhism doesn't have wars.
  • Not Synced
How can you have a war over what you are reading in your own heart?
  • Not Synced
If it's out there on a piece of paper, yeah, you can argue with,
  • Not Synced
you can get theologians who are argue and try to
  • Not Synced
work out what it all means.
  • Not Synced
But experience, we know what experience is.
  • Not Synced
So meaning of life, what really has meaning for
  • Not Synced
    you in life?
  • Not Synced
Straightaway you find it's not the fame or the
  • Not Synced
    money or the other stuff,
  • Not Synced
the greatest meaning in life is when you really
  • Not Synced
    serve and help someone.
  • Not Synced
It's not just thinking compassion, it's actually succeeded in compassion.
  • Not Synced
You cared for someone and it's changing.
  • Not Synced
    I know that
  • Not Synced
it's been one of the greatest motivators of my life.
  • Not Synced
Now I learned that early on when I went to a
  • Not Synced
Buddhist talk when I was still a student,
  • Not Synced
and I had heard all these great professors and
  • Not Synced
monks give talks and quite frankly,
  • Not Synced
many times, I went to sleep.
  • Not Synced
Maybe with that experience was why I try
  • Not Synced
to give interesting talks, and if I find
  • Not Synced
    you're getting dull,
  • Not Synced
that's when I tell jokes to wake you up.
  • Not Synced
Cos I've been there, listen to very boring
  • Not Synced
talks and just falling asleep myself.
  • Not Synced
But I remember one of the talks which I heard
  • Not Synced
which I would never forget, it didn't say
  • Not Synced
very much about Buddhism at all.
  • Not Synced
Not as I'd expected it, it didn't say about
  • Not Synced
four nobel truths or seven enlightenment factors
  • Not Synced
and all these other stuff which you can read in books anyway.
  • Not Synced
It was just this old English woman, who was
  • Not Synced
a Tibetan nun who was running an orphanage
  • Not Synced
with very poor kids in Sikkhim.
  • Not Synced
And the way that she described her compassion was very inspiring.
  • Not Synced
I realised at that time, Buddhism isn't a theory,
  • Not Synced
Buddhism is actually what you do,
  • Not Synced
how you behave, just your kindness, your virtue,
  • Not Synced
    your peace, your forgiveness,
  • Not Synced
    that's what Buddhism is.
  • Not Synced
It's not what you find in the books.
  • Not Synced
What you find in the interaction between two
  • Not Synced
    very kind and caring people.
  • Not Synced
I didn't realise at that time.
  • Not Synced
But she taught Buddhism more eloquently than
  • Not Synced
any professor or any monk at that time
  • Not Synced
    which I knew.
  • Not Synced
So that's why, the day after, I was so inspired,
  • Not Synced
I went to my bank and took GBP10 out of my account.
  • Not Synced
Now this was in 1969, I was a very poor student,
  • Not Synced
that was 2 weeks food money for me.
  • Not Synced
So I went hungry. I make up for it these days.
  • Not Synced
But you know, [laughter], I was really hungry,
  • Not Synced
    I wasn't starving but I didn't have as much
  • Not Synced
as I would normally have, and it hurt.
  • Not Synced
And because it hurt, I got so much happiness
  • Not Synced
out of that, so much joy, I put GBP10 for
  • Not Synced
this little orphanage for poor kids.
  • Not Synced
    That was meaning,
  • Not Synced
that was purpose, that was something which
  • Not Synced
made life have a resonance, and something very solid which I could respect.
  • Not Synced
It was a pointer to how I could find deeper meaning in my life.
  • Not Synced
Cause giving GBP10 to an orphanage,
  • Not Synced
yeah, it helps them, it's important.
  • Not Synced
There's also, this more you can do.
  • Not Synced
It's great to have donations and, look,
  • Not Synced
we've got, somebody's left this in here,
  • Not Synced
we must be doing the Bangladesh orphanage appeal soon,
  • Not Synced
also at Christmas, is it this week, Dennis?
  • Not Synced
Bangladesh orphanage appeal, look if you give whatever to
  • Not Synced
this orphanage we've been looking after
  • Not Synced
    for a long time.
  • Not Synced
It just makes you so happy when you get the pictures
  • Not Synced
and see that these are kids,
  • Not Synced
    boys and girls
  • Not Synced
who've got absolutely no parents and in
  • Not Synced
    Bangladesh
  • Not Synced
    of all the countries,
  • Not Synced
the poorest country in the world.
  • Not Synced
And they don't get government support.
  • Not Synced
    And actually, this particular orphanage,
  • Not Synced
I think it's something like 95% funded by you guys.
  • Not Synced
So this is the one which we,the Buddhist Society
  • Not Synced
    we look after
  • Not Synced
But you do that and you help someone,
  • Not Synced
and you sort of, you go and see them afterwards,
  • Not Synced
    and you get tearing.
  • Not Synced
For those of you who've been here a long time,
  • Not Synced
    remember we had the tsunami,
  • Not Synced
that we raised funds over here.
  • Not Synced
And when we raised the funds,
  • Not Synced
we didn't know exactly what organisation to give them to.
  • Not Synced
But the other organisation I am associated with
  • Not Synced
    in Singapore, the Buddhist Fellowship,
  • Not Synced
    they were also raising funds,
  • Not Synced
    and the Singapore Red Cross,
  • Not Synced
    they had this deal that,
  • Not Synced
if you would put, sort of, had, sort of,
  • Not Synced
any amount of money for the tsunami appeal,
  • Not Synced
in one of the countries there,
  • Not Synced
they would match it 4 to 1.
  • Not Synced
So, our Buddhist Society, we're very clever.
  • Not Synced
We sent our donation over to Singapore to
  • Not Synced
our Buddhist Fellowship, we donated to them
  • Not Synced
    we joined in with them,
  • Not Synced
so for every dollar we collected here,
  • Not Synced
we got another 4 dollars from the Red Cross.
  • Not Synced
So I don't know how, it was a couple of million or something, eventually we got
  • Not Synced
So we looked after this orphanage,
  • Not Synced
I think it was in Khao Lak in Thailand, I think.
  • Not Synced
I know, there was, we did one,
  • Not Synced
building homes in Sri Lanka as well.
  • Not Synced
    We did that too.
  • Not Synced
In Sri Lanka, forget the name of the village we looked after.
  • Not Synced
    But also in the orphanage.
  • Not Synced
It was twice that I've been to that orphanage.
  • Not Synced
I went actually to just to see people's donations
  • Not Synced
    and see little kids
  • Not Synced
    and sweet little kids,
  • Not Synced
    without mother and father
  • Not Synced
    they have each other.
  • Not Synced
And see this huge family, about,
  • Not Synced
30 or 40 that every one from different parents,
  • Not Synced
just behaving like brothers and sisters
  • Not Synced
and having a whale of a time
  • Not Synced
and doing sort of a Thai dance
  • Not Synced
    which was not properly done,
  • Not Synced
not like any professionals at all
  • Not Synced
    it's kids
  • Not Synced
trying to do their very best.
  • Not Synced
    But it makes you cry
  • Not Synced
it's just so sweet and beautiful
  • Not Synced
    you've given them happiness
  • Not Synced
    you've given them a life
  • Not Synced
    you've given them a future.
  • Not Synced
    So when I do that,
  • Not Synced
people say "You must be tired,
  • Not Synced
you're teaching retreat at the same time".
  • Not Synced
    What do you mean, tired?
  • Not Synced
That's where you get your energy from
  • Not Synced
that's where you get your passion,
  • Not Synced
that's where you get your inspiration from.
  • Not Synced
So every time you do something like that,
  • Not Synced
    you've found meaning.
  • Not Synced
    Now it's because of that,
  • Not Synced
I've been telling people for a long time now
  • Not Synced
if any of you are in clinical depression,
  • Not Synced
    or may be, or
  • Not Synced
extreme depression, go and get some pills.
  • Not Synced
But just ordinary depression or you are a bit fed up,
  • Not Synced
or your life isn't going well,
  • Not Synced
or like someone told me today,
  • Not Synced
"England aren't doing so well in the Ashes."
  • Not Synced
    And always the other thing
  • Not Synced
    Australia,
  • Not Synced
no Australia's not doing so well in the Ashes or something.
  • Not Synced
Someone's not doing so well in the Ashes,
  • Not Synced
    someone's always depressed in sports.
  • Not Synced
The other thing, was that Australia never got the World Cup or whatever.
  • Not Synced
    So instead of getting depressed,
  • Not Synced
cause life is like that in times.
  • Not Synced
For those of you who're really, really down,
  • Not Synced
just go and do some charity work.
  • Not Synced
    Just get off your bumps,
  • Not Synced
and go to an old people's home,
  • Not Synced
    or go to a hospital
  • Not Synced
    or somewhere
  • Not Synced
    and just serve.
  • Not Synced
It's a great thing to the able to serve.
  • Not Synced
    Cause what it actually does,
  • Not Synced
not only does it teach you about what life is all about,
  • Not Synced
but it gives you this great sense of worth.
  • Not Synced
    You're actually helping someone.
  • Not Synced
Again, just when I was at
  • Not Synced
    university,
  • Not Synced
    I was the only Buddhist,
  • Not Synced
    I knew at that college.
  • Not Synced
    So it's very lonely.
  • Not Synced
    So, you had your friends
  • Not Synced
and you have great philosophical arguments.
  • Not Synced
There's one guy who was a very close friend,
  • Not Synced
    he was Christian.
  • Not Synced
So we had these great discussions.
  • Not Synced
    It wasn't sort of antagonistic,
  • Not Synced
    it was animated.
  • Not Synced
And when I heard he was going to the local mental hospital
  • Not Synced
    to do voluntary work,
  • Not Synced
I thought I'd better go along as well.
  • Not Synced
I'm a Buddhist, I'm supposed to be compassionate,
  • Not Synced
even though you are very busy and
  • Not Synced
all these other stuff you're supposed
  • Not Synced
    to do at university,
  • Not Synced
    I went.
  • Not Synced
And I enjoyed it so much.
  • Not Synced
But I kept going for 2 years,
  • Not Synced
those Christians, they just actually dropped out.
  • Not Synced
And I went for 2 years, sometimes,
  • Not Synced
"what you're trying to prove?" they asked me.
  • Not Synced
    And I think about it,
  • Not Synced
actually it went way beyond doing service,
  • Not Synced
I wasn't there to do service,
  • Not Synced
I was actually getting joy out of this.
  • Not Synced
    It gave my week meaning,
  • Not Synced
just to go and hang out
  • Not Synced
    with down's syndrome's kids,
  • Not Synced
and that's really what I was doing.
  • Not Synced
    I wasn't an expert,
  • Not Synced
I wasn't trying to do anything much with them,
  • Not Synced
except just trying to be with them.
  • Not Synced
    And to this day,
  • Not Synced
I credit that with teaching me
  • Not Synced
what I call like "emotional language".
  • Not Synced
So if I'm a good teacher, 4 years,
  • Not Synced
not just the way you speak,
  • Not Synced
    anyone can say words,
  • Not Synced
it's just where they come from.
  • Not Synced
These were kids who can't speak,
  • Not Synced
    in the same way,
  • Not Synced
    at least these kids,
  • Not Synced
    were institutionalised,
  • Not Synced
couldn't speak the same way as I speak to you
  • Not Synced
if you come to ask me a question
  • Not Synced
or if you just talk to me or whatever.
  • Not Synced
    They didn't have the vocabulary
  • Not Synced
or the way to articulate their thoughts.
  • Not Synced
But they communicate through their emotions,
  • Not Synced
    through their hearts,
  • Not Synced
    through their facial language.
  • Not Synced
My goodness, they were just so clever.
  • Not Synced
I remember many times, just going there
  • Not Synced
    and they,
  • Not Synced
    they sized me up straightaway,
  • Not Synced
if I was in a bad mood,
  • Not Synced
    they'd know what's wrong.
  • Not Synced
    They'd give me hug.
  • Not Synced
    It was the first time
  • Not Synced
    as a man,
  • Not Synced
I'd allowed a man to hug me.
  • Not Synced
    I was a heterosexual.
  • Not Synced
I was afraid of, sort of homosexuality.
  • Not Synced
That's just the way I was conditioned
  • Not Synced
and they had to allow, as a male,
  • Not Synced
    a young male in 1969 or 70,
  • Not Synced
allow another male to hug you.
  • Not Synced
    That was tough,
  • Not Synced
you are English, stiff upper lip
  • Not Synced
    and all that.
  • Not Synced
    But it was so wonderful
  • Not Synced
    for me to learn
  • Not Synced
    just how to be loved.
  • Not Synced
I got so much from those kids.
  • Not Synced
I really thank them so much.
  • Not Synced
So I thought I was giving
  • Not Synced
    when I first went there.
  • Not Synced
No, I got heaps and heaps,
  • Not Synced
    I got enormous gratitude,
  • Not Synced
what I learnt when I gave
  • Not Synced
that's where you start to understand what meaning is.
  • Not Synced
I know I just, I do travel around a lot.
  • Not Synced
After teaching here, ok, on Sunday,
  • Not Synced
    I'll travel to Bangkok
  • Not Synced
and just give this whole series of talks all day
  • Not Synced
to teach 9 retreats, like a meditation workshop,
  • Not Synced
and then you have an hour probably to shower
  • Not Synced
and then you have another talk in the evening.
  • Not Synced
Look, if you look to that schedule,
  • Not Synced
if I was member of the union,
  • Not Synced
    Kevin... or whatever,
  • Not Synced
    he would actually say,
  • Not Synced
    no, you're exploiting Ajahn Brahm,
  • Not Synced
    you can't do this,
  • Not Synced
    this is too much work.
  • Not Synced
You know, no member of union would work as hard as I do.
  • Not Synced
    But is it exploitation?
  • Not Synced
    No, please, give me more.
  • Not Synced
I keep on saying to them.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
Because youI get so much energy and joy out of this.,
  • Not Synced
    because I am serving,
  • Not Synced
and I am being with people,
  • Not Synced
I am getting my meaning in life,
  • Not Synced
    so I really thank you
  • Not Synced
for coming here and letting me get high
  • Not Synced
of giving a talk to you.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
They can understand when you put this meaning in life,
  • Not Synced
    it's amazing,
  • Not Synced
when you don't ask anything back in return,
  • Not Synced
but you, sort of give care,
  • Not Synced
    you just give your energy,
  • Not Synced
    non judgemental,
  • Not Synced
it's amazing just how much meaning you find
  • Not Synced
in just the ordinary things in life.
  • Not Synced
    For just being with someone,
  • Not Synced
    caring for them,
  • Not Synced
    being with them,
  • Not Synced
just learning and growing from each other.
  • Not Synced
And it's never ever any idea of superiority.
  • Not Synced
It's never me better than you
  • Not Synced
    or you better than me.
  • Not Synced
    As I keep on saying,
  • Not Synced
    the secret of any relationship,
  • Not Synced
    even if it's just ,
  • Not Synced
talking with somebody on the bus,
  • Not Synced
    it's never me,
  • Not Synced
    it's never them,
  • Not Synced
    it's always us.
  • Not Synced
    Always try to remember that.
  • Not Synced
So it's not me talking down to that person,
  • Not Synced
    or talking up to them.
  • Not Synced
It's never about me or you,
  • Not Synced
    it's always about we, us.
  • Not Synced
    It's a whole,
  • Not Synced
    not the parts.
  • Not Synced
That changes the whole way we look at,
  • Not Synced
    interactions,
  • Not Synced
it's not interactions, Thich Nhat Hanh says,
  • Not Synced
    it's interbeing,.
  • Not Synced
which we have with each other.
  • Not Synced
And there you can try a great amount of meaning.
  • Not Synced
One of the reasons you have that extra amounts of meanings
  • Not Synced
    because in those interactions,
  • Not Synced
    when you disappear
  • Not Synced
    and the other person disappears,
  • Not Synced
    it's never self,
  • Not Synced
    it's never about me.
  • Not Synced
That terrible, terrible idea in life about ego, me and mine,
  • Not Synced
it's unfortunate we learn when we're very young at school,
  • Not Synced
that's where we start gaining our personal identity
  • Not Synced
and thinking we are actually separate from other beings.
  • Not Synced
    We get our name.
  • Not Synced
I remember I got my peg at the school yard where I had to hang my raincoat
  • Not Synced
and had my own name underneath it.
  • Not Synced
And I realised that I had to put my name on the books,
  • Not Synced
    I developed my identity,
  • Not Synced
the thing which separated me from other beings.
  • Not Synced
I was told to go to males toilets
  • Not Synced
    not female,
  • Not Synced
    had the male playground,
  • Not Synced
the female playground in the primary school.
  • Not Synced
So that separation gave me identities.
  • Not Synced
You know how separation causes all the problems in this life.
  • Not Synced
I'm not saying that the men go and use
  • Not Synced
    the female toilets tonight.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
No, that'll get you into a lot of trouble,
  • Not Synced
when girls get into the men's toilets.
  • Not Synced
What I'm actually saying over there
  • Not Synced
is the separation into sort of you're a Buddhist,
  • Not Synced
    you're a Catholic, you're a Muslim,
  • Not Synced
    you're a boy,
  • Not Synced
you are old, you're doing this,
  • Not Synced
    you're Australian, you're whatever.
  • Not Synced
    That's where the suffering of
  • Not Synced
the Ashes cricket test comes from,
  • Not Synced
that's where the suffering of who gets the World Cup.
  • Not Synced
Cause we separate ourselves out into this nation,
  • Not Synced
and that nation, into this religion, that religion,
  • Not Synced
    this race, that race.
  • Not Synced
It's not that Australia lost the World Cup.
  • Not Synced
It's that the world gained the World Cup.
  • Not Synced
The world won the Ashes cricket,
  • Not Synced
    we won it
  • Not Synced
    not someone.
  • Not Synced
That way, isn't there something very, very beautiful?
  • Not Synced
    Instead of competition,
  • Not Synced
there is this beautiful sense of co-operation
  • Not Synced
    in this world,
  • Not Synced
    being with people,
  • Not Synced
    rather than being against people.
  • Not Synced
And there you actually see the sense of ego and separation is,
  • Not Synced
and there you actually understanding what the
  • Not Synced
    meaning of life is.
  • Not Synced
So in the meaning of life,
  • Not Synced
if you want to put meaning of life,
  • Not Synced
    take yourself out, number one,
  • Not Synced
    it's not about you anymore.
  • Not Synced
Take the other person out as well,
  • Not Synced
    it's not about them.
  • Not Synced
I know that many people misunderstand
  • Not Synced
    compassion in Buddhism.
  • Not Synced
    They think compassion in Buddhism,
  • Not Synced
    thinking about everybody else,
  • Not Synced
which means you get burnt out,
  • Not Synced
people use you as a rug,
  • Not Synced
    a doormat, or whatever,
  • Not Synced
    and you get abused,
  • Not Synced
    you don't count,
  • Not Synced
cause you're always the self effacing person
  • Not Synced
in the sense that, you know,
  • Not Synced
    you think about everybody else,
  • Not Synced
after a while you get burnt out,
  • Not Synced
    you get depressed,
  • Not Synced
you get in a real mess.
  • Not Synced
    That is not compassion,
  • Not Synced
about sacrificing yourself for other people.
  • Not Synced
    Compassion is
  • Not Synced
looking yourself no more, no less,
  • Not Synced
    looking at the whole, everybody,
  • Not Synced
    it's all about us,
  • Not Synced
    you disappear.
  • Not Synced
    The other person disappears.
  • Not Synced
    It's about community,
  • Not Synced
    family,
  • Not Synced
    a whole race,
  • Not Synced
    a whole beings,
  • Not Synced
    all sentient beings,
  • Not Synced
a whole earth looked upon as one organism,
  • Not Synced
    with many different parts
  • Not Synced
like the ants' nest, all working together,
  • Not Synced
never thinking of yourself as an individual or the other.
  • Not Synced
    It's amazing,
  • Not Synced
    the ants' nest,
  • Not Synced
    just how intelligent they are.
  • Not Synced
    Years and years ago,
  • Not Synced
    at our monastery in Serpentine,
  • Not Synced
    there were many ants' nests,
  • Not Synced
    there was this one visitor,
  • Not Synced
he decided to give the ants an intelligence test.
  • Not Synced
Cause you know, the ants' nest,
  • Not Synced
he put a sugar cube on top of the ants' nest.
  • Not Synced
    The ants love the sugar.
  • Not Synced
It's like one of these hard cubes,
  • Not Synced
I wonder what they would do with this.
  • Not Synced
Would they break it up to take it into the small holes,
  • Not Synced
to take it into the centre of their nest?
  • Not Synced
    But what would they do?
  • Not Synced
And he really couldn't believe their intelligence
  • Not Synced
    their engineering prowess.
  • Not Synced
    What the ants did,
  • Not Synced
they excavated under the sugar cube.
  • Not Synced
So day by day, the sugar cube got lower
  • Not Synced
and lower and lower and lower.
  • Not Synced
When the top got below the surface,
  • Not Synced
they put the earth on top again.
  • Not Synced
Now it's exactly the same way,
  • Not Synced
I think the Vietcong buried the American tanks,
  • Not Synced
    during the Vietnam war,
  • Not Synced
    they actually drew them underground.
  • Not Synced
That was just a community of ants,
  • Not Synced
who've never seen a sugar cube before,
  • Not Synced
    ever.
  • Not Synced
    Incredible intelligence
  • Not Synced
    when we can work together.
  • Not Synced
Isn't it terrible that we work against each other so often?
  • Not Synced
    Especially in our companies,
  • Not Synced
    in our businesses,
  • Not Synced
    in our religions?
  • Not Synced
    We work against each other,
  • Not Synced
    we never get anywhere,
  • Not Synced
    we work together,
  • Not Synced
    there's no end of successes.
  • Not Synced
    So meaning in life,
  • Not Synced
    giving you success
  • Not Synced
    is learning
  • Not Synced
to work, not just me working with you,
  • Not Synced
    always about us.
  • Not Synced
    Change the whole mindset.
  • Not Synced
That's one of the reasons why
  • Not Synced
    in Buddhism
  • Not Synced
    we stress
  • Not Synced
    sort of non-self,
  • Not Synced
    we stress compassion,
  • Not Synced
    the two go together.
  • Not Synced
    It is not a theory,
  • Not Synced
it's actually where we experience life,
  • Not Synced
a different frame work for looking,
  • Not Synced
which is why that when you do service,
  • Not Synced
    that's where you find meaning,
  • Not Synced
    because you disappear.
  • Not Synced
    You vanish.
  • Not Synced
But if you ever do any service,
  • Not Synced
and you think, I am doing this for my merit
  • Not Synced
    for my good karma
  • Not Synced
you won't get very much out of that,
  • Not Synced
    because it's again, personal,
  • Not Synced
    it's just
  • Not Synced
    what we call
  • Not Synced
    what this monk call
  • Not Synced
    "spiritual materialism".
  • Not Synced
    It's a great word
  • Not Synced
because once you have the word
  • Not Synced
you can see so many things
  • Not Synced
which you can actually put under that
  • Not Synced
    that umbrella, the spiritual materialism.
  • Not Synced
I can actually see you doing that sometimes.
  • Not Synced
I don't know how many people go on to a retreat
  • Not Synced
and they're really trying so hard
  • Not Synced
to get nimittas, these beautiful lights in the mind,
  • Not Synced
    they try to get jhanas,
  • Not Synced
    spiritual materialistic gain
  • Not Synced
    I'm trying to get something.
  • Not Synced
That's one of the reasons why,
  • Not Synced
if you've ever gone on a retreat led by me,
  • Not Synced
I'll repeat something which Ajahn Chah,
  • Not Synced
    he was a great teacher
  • Not Synced
    said,
  • Not Synced
"You meditate not to get things
  • Not Synced
    but to let things go."
  • Not Synced
    Not to get
  • Not Synced
    but to lose things
  • Not Synced
which is one of the reasons,
  • Not Synced
why I said at our monastery today,
  • Not Synced
    I said, monks and nuns
  • Not Synced
    we are biggest losers.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
    We've lost everything.
  • Not Synced
    I've lost my degree,
  • Not Synced
    I've lost, you know
  • Not Synced
any possibility of having a wife and kids,
  • Not Synced
I've lost sex, I've lost movies,
  • Not Synced
    I've lost everything.
  • Not Synced
But you still can lose a bit more,
  • Not Synced
cause you can always lose a bit more
  • Not Synced
and you can see what it means
  • Not Synced
    you're letting go more,
  • Not Synced
    you're detaching more
  • Not Synced
    and so, it's really incredible,
  • Not Synced
that we talk about the biggest loser
  • Not Synced
    being like something very negative.
  • Not Synced
If you call someone a loser,
  • Not Synced
that's one of the worse things that you can call a person
  • Not Synced
    in our modern society.
  • Not Synced
    If someone calls me loser,
  • Not Synced
I'll say "Yeah, you've got it.
  • Not Synced
Thank you for that wonderful accolade and piece of praise.
  • Not Synced
I'll really try more to lose things
  • Not Synced
so thank you for calling me a loser."
  • Not Synced
    That's, in monastic terms,
  • Not Synced
    that's actually a compliment.
  • Not Synced
So if anyone on the street calls you a loser,
  • Not Synced
means your spiritual practice is going very well.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
You know you'll get a lot of meaning in life,
  • Not Synced
    to be free.
  • Not Synced
    Have you ever felt freedom?
  • Not Synced
    I don't mean thinking freedom.
  • Not Synced
Cause you can actually read the philosophical books
  • Not Synced
    about freedom,
  • Not Synced
and the different ideas about freedom.
  • Not Synced
    Have you ever felt free?
  • Not Synced
    How does it feel like?
  • Not Synced
When did you feel like that?
  • Not Synced
You know one of the first times I felt free,
  • Not Synced
going back to my experience in childhood
  • Not Synced
I had this afternoon off school
  • Not Synced
    and at lunch time,
  • Not Synced
    I did all my homework.
  • Not Synced
So as I walked out those school gates,
  • Not Synced
and actually had nothing to do,
  • Not Synced
    and nowhere to go,
  • Not Synced
    I had no appointments,
  • Not Synced
no business which I needed to complete.
  • Not Synced
    I remember that afternoon
  • Not Synced
    even now
  • Not Synced
I was then about 13 or 14 at the time
  • Not Synced
it was my first experience of freedom.
  • Not Synced
I could do whatever I wanted,
  • Not Synced
    go wherever I wanted
  • Not Synced
    with no constraints at all
  • Not Synced
    no force, no compulsion,
  • Not Synced
    totally free.
  • Not Synced
    It's a beautiful feeling.
  • Not Synced
Can you ever feel like that?
  • Not Synced
You don't have to achieve anything
  • Not Synced
you don't have to fulfill any duties,
  • Not Synced
    complete any projects
  • Not Synced
    and just be.
  • Not Synced
That told me what freedom was.
  • Not Synced
At least it gave me a taste of freedom.
  • Not Synced
That word, a taste of freedom,
  • Not Synced
you know that's an important Buddhist word.
  • Not Synced
Even actually, I think, Ajahn Chah's first book,
  • Not Synced
we gave it that title, "A taste of freedom."
  • Not Synced
Cause it's actually a term by the Buddha,
  • Not Synced
    Vimutti rasa in Pali.
  • Not Synced
    Cause I give these talks,
  • Not Synced
sometime I have to quote Pali,
  • Not Synced
just to say I know my stuff,
  • Not Synced
this is actually from the suttas,
  • Not Synced
I'm not just a monk who speaks from his own ideas,
  • Not Synced
this is all based on the Buddha's teachings.
  • Not Synced
    So the taste of freedom
  • Not Synced
    what actually is that?
  • Not Synced
If you understand the taste of freedom,
  • Not Synced
you understand a deeper meaning in life.
  • Not Synced
    Where all of this craving
  • Not Synced
    and wanting
  • Not Synced
    and ill will
  • Not Synced
all these stuff which agitates the mind
  • Not Synced
    and stops you being,
  • Not Synced
which is always making you do things,
  • Not Synced
    and go places
  • Not Synced
    and fix things
  • Not Synced
    and mend things,
  • Not Synced
    all that stuff
  • Not Synced
    after a while
  • Not Synced
    that just drives you crazy
  • Not Synced
when ever will there be an end
  • Not Synced
to all this having to fix up things?
  • Not Synced
That was one of the reasons why
  • Not Synced
    another anecdote,
  • Not Synced
the former abbot of Bodhiyana monastery,
  • Not Synced
Ajahn Jagaro, he was a great monk.
  • Not Synced
    When he disrobed,
  • Not Synced
and I was left looking after the monastery,
  • Not Synced
again, I would work very hard
  • Not Synced
cause I had all my ideas I'd like to do for that monastery,
  • Not Synced
    I worked very hard.
  • Not Synced
    So from Monday to Friday,
  • Not Synced
I'd work like a dog for that monastery,
  • Not Synced
building and looking after the place
  • Not Synced
and being the abbot at the same time.
  • Not Synced
    Many of those buildings there,
  • Not Synced
    I did,
  • Not Synced
    built myself,
  • Not Synced
    made the bricks,
  • Not Synced
    Dennis knows that,
  • Not Synced
    he's seen me down there,
  • Not Synced
    he's our President,
  • Not Synced
and then on the weekend, I'd come here,
  • Not Synced
    Friday, give the talk,
  • Not Synced
    Saturday, Sunday, just counsel people,
  • Not Synced
    talk with people, do ceremonies,
  • Not Synced
so go back late Sunday evening,
  • Not Synced
Monday morning, back to work again.
  • Not Synced
It was 7 days a week
  • Not Synced
    and because of that
  • Not Synced
sort of I could never enjoy that monastery.
  • Not Synced
So much so, I thought, when people came,
  • Not Synced
you know you come sort of to visit the monastery
  • Not Synced
    to being done,
  • Not Synced
    you're all relaxed.
  • Not Synced
Because you relaxes it's your day off
  • Not Synced
and you come to the monastery
  • Not Synced
    to feed the monks
  • Not Synced
    and to feed the nuns
  • Not Synced
    and have a peaceful time
  • Not Synced
maybe go to the meditation hall,
  • Not Synced
    do a bit of meditation,
  • Not Synced
have a walk around, to relax
  • Not Synced
and I got jealous of you.
  • Not Synced
And so you come to the monastery
  • Not Synced
and you're relaxed and I've got all these jobs to do.
  • Not Synced
I've got to talk to you,
  • Not Synced
I've got to fix things up,
  • Not Synced
And I realised that there's something wrong with my life.
  • Not Synced
My life was always getting things done
  • Not Synced
    and doing things.
  • Not Synced
So I remember just seeing that
  • Not Synced
    having enough space
  • Not Synced
just to look back and seeing the mistakes that I was making in my life.
  • Not Synced
    I made this resolution,
  • Not Synced
    every Monday morning
  • Not Synced
    when I, obviously Sunday, Saturday,
  • Not Synced
    Sunday just working here,
  • Not Synced
Monday morning, I'd go back to that monastery
  • Not Synced
    and that'll be,
  • Not Synced
    a doing nothing morning.
  • Not Synced
And I'd walk around the monastery,
  • Not Synced
not looking for the things which needed to be fixed up,
  • Not Synced
not looking for the letters which need to be written,
  • Not Synced
not looking for the telephone calls which I had to make,
  • Not Synced
no, this was not my work time.
  • Not Synced
So I wanted to see that monastery
  • Not Synced
with the same eyes that a visitor on holiday
  • Not Synced
    could see that monastery.
  • Not Synced
That was a hard thing to do,
  • Not Synced
but you learn to do that.
  • Not Synced
    Cause when you go there,
  • Not Synced
you can't see all the things which need to be done.
  • Not Synced
    It's not your monastery.
  • Not Synced
    So I did that
  • Not Synced
and found,Wow, that's how I can be free.
  • Not Synced
Not with the fault finding mind,
  • Not Synced
    but the opposite,
  • Not Synced
    a mind of compassion,
  • Not Synced
which can accept things as they are
  • Not Synced
and see the value in things as they are.
  • Not Synced
    To realise,
  • Not Synced
    not everything
  • Not Synced
every moment needs to be fixed up.
  • Not Synced
It does not need to be changed,
  • Not Synced
you don't need to make it better
  • Not Synced
you don't need, to sort of,
  • Not Synced
    push it forward,
  • Not Synced
    leave it as it is,
  • Not Synced
    for goodness sake!
  • Not Synced
And at first it was a tough thing to do,
  • Not Synced
to leave things as they are,
  • Not Synced
because you think, that's being lazy.
  • Not Synced
    Our society,
  • Not Synced
    it creates depression
  • Not Synced
    and anxiety
  • Not Synced
because we don't allow people to be lazy.
  • Not Synced
I want to create a Lazy People Society.
  • Not Synced
    So lazy people's rights,
  • Not Synced
so you have right to be lazy,
  • Not Synced
at least one day of a week
  • Not Synced
or one morning of a week.
  • Not Synced
    So you can actually sit
  • Not Synced
    and actually do nothing
  • Not Synced
and have permission to do nothing.
  • Not Synced
    If you really want to
  • Not Synced
    I'll give you a certificate.
  • Not Synced
Ajahn Brahm hereby gives you permission
  • Not Synced
to do nothing one morning a week.
  • Not Synced
You can show it to your partner,
  • Not Synced
    I've got permission, so [laughter].
  • Not Synced
Cause if we don't do that,
  • Not Synced
you're not enjoying anything in life.
  • Not Synced
I could not enjoy the place which I lived,
  • Not Synced
cause it was also a work place for me.
  • Not Synced
I couldn't even enjoy my body,
  • Not Synced
always had to wash it, take it to toilet,
  • Not Synced
    do something with it.
  • Not Synced
I could not never enjoy my life,
  • Not Synced
cause it was always something to improve.
  • Not Synced
You're missing out on the meaning of life,
  • Not Synced
when you're so active in doing things,
  • Not Synced
    making things better.
  • Not Synced
    So I left it alone,
  • Not Synced
you know what I found on those Monday mornings?
  • Not Synced
    The monastery was beautiful,
  • Not Synced
why did I keep wanting to change it.
  • Not Synced
It's alright to do some duties and work
  • Not Synced
but not every moment of your life,
  • Not Synced
    for goodness sake.
  • Not Synced
    Please,
  • Not Synced
    stop.
  • Not Synced
    When you stop,
  • Not Synced
you realise life is much more beautiful
  • Not Synced
    than you ever thought.
  • Not Synced
    Please stop.
  • Not Synced
    And you'll find your partner
  • Not Synced
is not as bad as you thought they were.
  • Not Synced
    You stop
  • Not Synced
    and you find out
  • Not Synced
my god, you're beautiful as well.
  • Not Synced
    I realised,
  • Not Synced
    the great insight,
  • Not Synced
    I am good enough.
  • Not Synced
It's a beautiful thing to understand,
  • Not Synced
to realise, I am good enough.
  • Not Synced
I don't need to change and be perfect.
  • Not Synced
    I am good enough.
  • Not Synced
If you want something to write,
  • Not Synced
    on a piece of paper
  • Not Synced
    and put by your bed,
  • Not Synced
    so you can see it
  • Not Synced
every night before you go sleep
  • Not Synced
    and every morning
  • Not Synced
the first thing you look at
  • Not Synced
    when you wake up,
  • Not Synced
    I am good enough.
  • Not Synced
Ahh, good people have been telling me all
  • Not Synced
my life, I'm not good enough.
  • Not Synced
Even I got good marks at university,
  • Not Synced
Come on, you can go higher,
  • Not Synced
    you can work harder.
  • Not Synced
    You're a genius,
  • Not Synced
you can be a super genius.
  • Not Synced
Come on you can do better
  • Not Synced
    you give a good talk,
  • Not Synced
we can give a better talk.
  • Not Synced
    You get meditation,
  • Not Synced
    we can do better meditation.
  • Not Synced
    You can levitate,
  • Not Synced
    but not high enough.
  • Not Synced
    Gee, where is the end
  • Not Synced
    to all of this? [chuckle]
  • Not Synced
So it's a great wonderful thing to realise,
  • Not Synced
    I am good enough.
  • Not Synced
I don't need to make things better any more.
  • Not Synced
I can actually have the taste of freedom.
  • Not Synced
    My goodness, it tastes delicious,
  • Not Synced
to realise you don't have to change anything,
  • Not Synced
    be anything, do anything.
  • Not Synced
    I'm good enough.
  • Not Synced
    The amazing thing is
  • Not Synced
once you say you are good enough,
  • Not Synced
you know just how many other people,
  • Not Synced
    are also good enough,
  • Not Synced
which means you can love others.
  • Not Synced
Are you in love with someone?
  • Not Synced
If you want to change them,
  • Not Synced
you're not really in love with them.
  • Not Synced
If you try to make them better,
  • Not Synced
    fix up their faults,
  • Not Synced
all those irritating things in life,
  • Not Synced
    which really upset you,
  • Not Synced
your love hasn't made the grade.
  • Not Synced
If you look at your partner,
  • Not Synced
    and say,
  • Not Synced
    and you really mean it,
  • Not Synced
"You are good enough to love
  • Not Synced
    and be my partner",
  • Not Synced
what a wonderful thing that is.
  • Not Synced
Your partner realise they don't have
  • Not Synced
    to change for you
  • Not Synced
    they are good enough.
  • Not Synced
    You look at yourself,
  • Not Synced
    you don't have to change,
  • Not Synced
this is me, who I am,
  • Not Synced
I am at peace with myself.
  • Not Synced
    Peace,
  • Not Synced
    coming from freedom.
  • Not Synced
    That's to me,
  • Not Synced
one of the deepest meaning to life.
  • Not Synced
You know, people always want to find
  • Not Synced
    peace of mind,
  • Not Synced
where the heck can you find peace of mind?
  • Not Synced
You have to make yourself perfect
  • Not Synced
before you have peace of mind.
  • Not Synced
    You have to go through
  • Not Synced
therapy courses for the rest of your life
  • Not Synced
before you can get your act together.
  • Not Synced
You have to be wealthy, rich,
  • Not Synced
    beautiful, have botox treatments.
  • Not Synced
Do you have to sort of
  • Not Synced
lose your weight before you can be perfect enough?
  • Not Synced
    No, I'm good enough.
  • Not Synced
    [chuckle]
  • Not Synced
    It's beautiful, having a feeling
  • Not Synced
    that you're good enough.
  • Not Synced
Cause then you find the taste of freedom,
  • Not Synced
    is, the freedom from this,
  • Not Synced
being told you have to do this,
  • Not Synced
    you have to go there,
  • Not Synced
you have to be something different,
  • Not Synced
    and you really are?
  • Not Synced
Do you know how much suffering that is?
  • Not Synced
Thinking that you are not good enough,
  • Not Synced
    and you have to change
  • Not Synced
    and be different?
  • Not Synced
    That's your life,
  • Not Synced
    isn't it?
  • Not Synced
Being told by so many people
  • Not Synced
    you're not good enough.
  • Not Synced
    You come here
  • Not Synced
    and you're told
  • Not Synced
    you should meditate
  • Not Synced
    get into deep jhanas
  • Not Synced
    Ajahn Brahm says,
  • Not Synced
    "you should get jhanas".
  • Not Synced
    I'm not good enough,
  • Not Synced
    I haven't got jhanas yet.
  • Not Synced
    Now, please,
  • Not Synced
    you are good enough.
  • Not Synced
    I'm very proud and happy
  • Not Synced
and honoured that you are here this evening,
  • Not Synced
    members of our Buddhist Society,
  • Not Synced
so you are all good enough.
  • Not Synced
    I'll give you that certificate,
  • Not Synced
    Good enough certificate.
  • Not Synced
    If you don't believe it,
  • Not Synced
    I'll sign one for you.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
So you get this wonderful taste of freedom,
  • Not Synced
    and how many other places
  • Not Synced
    can you actually feel free?
  • Not Synced
    How many other places
  • Not Synced
you think that someone's judging you,
  • Not Synced
they are sort of criticising you,
  • Not Synced
trying to sort of make you different,
  • Not Synced
at work, always having you to work harder,
  • Not Synced
    at home,
  • Not Synced
    please in a home,
  • Not Synced
    love each other.
  • Not Synced
Don't always try and sort of
  • Not Synced
    make each other different.
  • Not Synced
    The rest of the world
  • Not Synced
try to make you do that.
  • Not Synced
    Not at home,
  • Not Synced
    please,
  • Not Synced
let that be a holy place,
  • Not Synced
    your shrine,
  • Not Synced
    your sacred area.
  • Not Synced
A home should be like a temple,
  • Not Synced
    a temple of love,
  • Not Synced
    where people are accepted,
  • Not Synced
    and not criticised.
  • Not Synced
So if you can actually do that
  • Not Synced
    you understand what
  • Not Synced
    a taste of freedom is,
  • Not Synced
and then you do find these moments,
  • Not Synced
deep moments of peace in mind.
  • Not Synced
Just like that afternoon I had
  • Not Synced
    free from school.
  • Not Synced
    Totally peace,
  • Not Synced
    nothing was missing,
  • Not Synced
I didn't need to do anything,
  • Not Synced
    didn't fix anything up.
  • Not Synced
    That's why I remember that,
  • Not Synced
first time I probably knew peace of mind.
  • Not Synced
    Sitting there,
  • Not Synced
    just being at peace
  • Not Synced
    not needed to get anywhere
  • Not Synced
    or do anything.
  • Not Synced
    And please
  • Not Synced
    when you meditate
  • Not Synced
    that's how you meditate too.
  • Not Synced
    These days
  • Not Synced
that's where I find the deepest meaning of my life.
  • Not Synced
    You meditate there,
  • Not Synced
    you're sitting in my cave
  • Not Synced
    where I live,
  • Not Synced
    you're sitting in your room
  • Not Synced
    somewhere,
  • Not Synced
    you're not thinking
  • Not Synced
    what sort of talk
  • Not Synced
I'm going to give this evening.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not sort of
  • Not Synced
thinking just what I'm to going to pack
  • Not Synced
for going to Thailand on Sunday.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not
  • Not Synced
thinking of what talk I'm going to give
  • Not Synced
    when I get there.
  • Not Synced
I'm not talking about how I can fix all the problems
  • Not Synced
    in the Buddhist Society
  • Not Synced
    or whoever.
  • Not Synced
    I don't think like that.
  • Not Synced
I just, it'll sort itself out.
  • Not Synced
You know, a lot of times,
  • Not Synced
    when you're totally irresponsible,
  • Not Synced
    life goes on much better?
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
But when you actually try and get involved
  • Not Synced
    and fix things up,
  • Not Synced
    it gets worse?
  • Not Synced
    Have you ever noticed that
  • Not Synced
    in life?
  • Not Synced
I've noticed that too many times.
  • Not Synced
It's better I get out of the way.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not indispensable.
  • Not Synced
    In fact,
  • Not Synced
the more you dispense with me,
  • Not Synced
    the better.
  • Not Synced
    In other words,
  • Not Synced
    get out of the way,
  • Not Synced
    just let things roll on,
  • Not Synced
    it's nature.
  • Not Synced
    Life is like that.
  • Not Synced
    So when I sort of,
  • Not Synced
    just leave things alone,
  • Not Synced
there's a beautiful sense of peace.
  • Not Synced
    I know how to meditate,
  • Not Synced
    cause that's the biggest
  • Not Synced
    skill which I developed
  • Not Synced
    over these years.
  • Not Synced
    I never meditate but
  • Not Synced
    like this,
  • Not Synced
    never,
  • Not Synced
    please don't try
  • Not Synced
    to be something,
  • Not Synced
    or get somewhere.
  • Not Synced
Don't put forth this terrible effort.
  • Not Synced
Where does that effort come from?
  • Not Synced
What are you trying to achieve,
  • Not Synced
    anyway?
  • Not Synced
    "I want to be peaceful.
  • Not Synced
    Come on,
  • Not Synced
    be peaceful!
  • Not Synced
    Be peaceful!!
  • Not Synced
    Be peaceful!!!"
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
    I just exaggerate there,
  • Not Synced
just to show what you are doing
  • Not Synced
    when you meditate
  • Not Synced
which is why people don't get peace
  • Not Synced
    in meditation.
  • Not Synced
    How do you get peaceful?
  • Not Synced
    Just put things down,
  • Not Synced
    leave them alone!
  • Not Synced
    Stop disturbing the process.
  • Not Synced
So you get out of the way,
  • Not Synced
    you don't do anything,
  • Not Synced
    just leave things alone.
  • Not Synced
    Be kind to this moment.
  • Not Synced
    Allow this moment to be.
  • Not Synced
So you're not trying to get anywhere,
  • Not Synced
    do anything,
  • Not Synced
    not striving or struggling,
  • Not Synced
try to make your mind different than it is,
  • Not Synced
if you've got a stupid mind
  • Not Synced
and it's all over the place
  • Not Synced
    most of the time,
  • Not Synced
    leave it alone!
  • Not Synced
    It's none of your business.
  • Not Synced
    Just like my monastery
  • Not Synced
Monday morning, it's none of my business.
  • Not Synced
I just look at it as if I am a visitor.
  • Not Synced
I don't try and change it.
  • Not Synced
Cause I didn't try and change it
  • Not Synced
    I notice its beauty.
  • Not Synced
Just like you notice its beauty
  • Not Synced
    when you visit there.
  • Not Synced
    So with my mind
  • Not Synced
I stop to try and change it
  • Not Synced
I'm not the abbot of my mind,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not the manager,
  • Not Synced
    the controller, the boss,
  • Not Synced
    so when I visit it,
  • Not Synced
I see it's beautiful as you see it
  • Not Synced
    the beautiful monastery
  • Not Synced
in which our monks and nuns live.
  • Not Synced
    Your mind is already beautiful,
  • Not Synced
why are you trying to change it for?
  • Not Synced
    So change your attitude instead.
  • Not Synced
    Very peaceful
  • Not Synced
    your mind,
  • Not Synced
    exactly as it is.
  • Not Synced
    Just like me
  • Not Synced
    I found my monastery
  • Not Synced
    is so beautiful
  • Not Synced
    I found peace of mind.
  • Not Synced
Not by trying to get peace of mind
  • Not Synced
    but stopping the getting,
  • Not Synced
    stopping the wanting
  • Not Synced
    and realise peace of mind
  • Not Synced
    was there all the time
  • Not Synced
when I've just been looking somewhere else.
  • Not Synced
Always trying to find peace of mind,
  • Not Synced
    over here,
  • Not Synced
    over there,
  • Not Synced
    anywhere.
  • Not Synced
But instead of just at this moment,
  • Not Synced
my mind is just where it was.
  • Not Synced
That is the most powerful meaning of life,
  • Not Synced
    stillness,
  • Not Synced
    inner peace,
  • Not Synced
    realising there's nothing to get,
  • Not Synced
    nowhere to go,
  • Not Synced
    the end of craving,
  • Not Synced
    the end of wanting,
  • Not Synced
realises it's there for you all the time
  • Not Synced
you're just looking in the wrong place.
  • Not Synced
You're looking to try and achieve things
  • Not Synced
rather than letting go of all that
  • Not Synced
    wanting to achieve.
  • Not Synced
    That's real meaning of life.
  • Not Synced
    So whatever I do
  • Not Synced
    in my busy,busy life,
  • Not Synced
    all of the struggles,
  • Not Synced
    I have struggles as well,
  • Not Synced
you know I do a lot of work,
  • Not Synced
trying to push this Buddhist Society forward
  • Not Synced
and also all the other societies
  • Not Synced
    which I get involved in.
  • Not Synced
    I'm a very stupid monk,
  • Not Synced
people ask me to do things
  • Not Synced
    and I usually say yes.
  • Not Synced
I get into big trouble all the time.
  • Not Synced
But that's part of my life
  • Not Synced
    to try and push Buddhism,
  • Not Synced
    the world life forward,
  • Not Synced
    whether it's ordaining bhikkunis or
  • Not Synced
    supporting euthanasia or
  • Not Synced
    these other stuff
  • Not Synced
    which I put out there,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes I get criticised
  • Not Synced
    but in the end
  • Not Synced
I just always just go into my meditation,
  • Not Synced
    "Ok, my work is done,
  • Not Synced
I've done what I thought was right.
  • Not Synced
Now's the time, just to stop."
  • Not Synced
    In stopping,
  • Not Synced
you find the deepest meaning of life.
  • Not Synced
    Not just doing things
  • Not Synced
    not trying to find meaning,
  • Not Synced
    just stopping
  • Not Synced
    and being the meaning
  • Not Synced
    you're searching for.
  • Not Synced
    Try it.
  • Not Synced
That's why Buddhism is such a successful
  • Not Synced
    path for these many years.
  • Not Synced
Not just because it went on the path
  • Not Synced
    of trying to achieve things.
  • Not Synced
But you have to stop all this craving
  • Not Synced
    and wanting business.
  • Not Synced
    Everytime you do that,
  • Not Synced
you find that what the monks and nuns' experience,
  • Not Synced
and you stop all this wanting
  • Not Synced
    you stop all this searching
  • Not Synced
you stop all this spiritual materialism,
  • Not Synced
you'd find the deepest meaning of life,
  • Not Synced
    stillness,
  • Not Synced
    peace of mind,
  • Not Synced
    nirvana.
  • Not Synced
    You don't get nirvana
  • Not Synced
    by running after it.
  • Not Synced
    You get it through stopping.
  • Not Synced
I'll finish with one of my favourite similes,
  • Not Synced
which I usually only talk about
  • Not Synced
    at retreats,
  • Not Synced
but it works here this evening.
  • Not Synced
    It's a nice little story
  • Not Synced
    just to finish with.
  • Not Synced
    It's a story,
  • Not Synced
    one of my favourite stories
  • Not Synced
of a donkey and the carrot.
  • Not Synced
Those of you who know the story
  • Not Synced
if you've been on the retreats,
  • Not Synced
this is also in the book of
  • Not Synced
    "Mindfulness , bliss and beyond."
  • Not Synced
You know donkeys are very stubborn animals,
  • Not Synced
that's why they say in English -
  • Not Synced
    as stubborn as a donkey.
  • Not Synced
You hit them with a stick,
  • Not Synced
    they won't move.
  • Not Synced
So the only way you get donkeys to move,
  • Not Synced
is you tie the stick to their back,
  • Not Synced
so the front of the stick is about 2 feet,
  • Not Synced
in front of the donkey's head,
  • Not Synced
at the end of the stick you put a string,
  • Not Synced
on the end of the string, a carrot.
  • Not Synced
    So there's this donkey,
  • Not Synced
seeing this carrot 2 foot in front it ,
  • Not Synced
craving is what drives the donkey,
  • Not Synced
    not fear of punishment.
  • Not Synced
So there the donkey moves forward
  • Not Synced
to try and get the carrot
  • Not Synced
    but because this carrot is
  • Not Synced
on the end of the stick,
  • Not Synced
and the stick is tied to the donkey,
  • Not Synced
    it doesn't matter how fast
  • Not Synced
    the donkey moves forward,
  • Not Synced
the carrot goes at the same speed.
  • Not Synced
There's always 2 foot in front of the donkey's head.
  • Not Synced
    It's stupid enough to think,
  • Not Synced
well, if I run a bit faster I might catch that carrot.
  • Not Synced
    You understand the simile -
  • Not Synced
    that's call your life,
  • Not Synced
    chasing a carrot.
  • Not Synced
    Do you ever get it?
  • Not Synced
Now it's always 2 foot in front,
  • Not Synced
    you almost get it, sometimes,
  • Not Synced
    just perfection you know,
  • Not Synced
    happiness,
  • Not Synced
    even deep meditation,
  • Not Synced
    it's almost there,
  • Not Synced
and you just go a bit further,
  • Not Synced
it goes further away from you.
  • Not Synced
But many donkeys have actually heard my talks
  • Not Synced
    on youtube.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
And they now know how to catch the carrot!
  • Not Synced
How to find meaning in life.
  • Not Synced
You know how you do that?
  • Not Synced
The donkey's already been running very fast,
  • Not Synced
and the donkey hears the word,
  • Not Synced
    "stop"
  • Not Synced
    stop chasing that carrot,
  • Not Synced
    stop"
  • Not Synced
    so the donkey stops.
  • Not Synced
You know what happens when you stop?
  • Not Synced
    The carrot moves further away
  • Not Synced
than instead of being before him.
  • Not Synced
    If you've got patience and
  • Not Synced
    trust and faith,
  • Not Synced
    you've heard Ajahn Brahm,
  • Not Synced
you actually believe he may be on to something,
  • Not Synced
    so you,
  • Not Synced
    stop.
  • Not Synced
And as soon as it's 4 foot away from you,
  • Not Synced
twice as far as it's ever been
  • Not Synced
you get a little bit of doubt,
  • Not Synced
    is this going to happen,
  • Not Synced
    is it true?
  • Not Synced
    But then something amazing happens,
  • Not Synced
the carrot starts coming towards you.
  • Not Synced
As soon as it's in its normal position,
  • Not Synced
2 foot in front of your mouth,
  • Not Synced
but now it's coming at great speed
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
    towards you,
  • Not Synced
you don't have to do anything,
  • Not Synced
    you just sit there,
  • Not Synced
And just at the right moment,
  • Not Synced
you remember the most important phrase,
  • Not Synced
"The door of my mouth is now open to you, carrot"
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
And the carrot gets into your own mouth!
  • Not Synced
That's how you find meaning in life.
  • Not Synced
    You stop,
  • Not Synced
the meaning just goes further away from you
  • Not Synced
    at first,
  • Not Synced
    but be patient,
  • Not Synced
    then it comes towards you,
  • Not Synced
    you don't chase it,
  • Not Synced
    you stop.
  • Not Synced
    At the right moment,
  • Not Synced
    with a bit of compassion,
  • Not Synced
    thank you,
  • Not Synced
    that's how you become enlightened.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you for listening.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
So any questions or comments about
  • Not Synced
    putting meaning into life and
  • Not Synced
    finding meaning in life?
  • Not Synced
    Any questions?
  • Not Synced
    Going, going,
  • Not Synced
    ok, gone.
