Wong Ping: The Freedom of Animation | Art21 "Extended Play”

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    (gentle music)
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    - [Wong Ping] Growing up
in a city like Hong Kong,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
we all live in a high-rise building.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    We're inside a box.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    (people chattering)
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    Living in a big city,
  • 0:40 - 0:43
it creates certain amount of isolation.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    I always wonder how people
    engage to each other.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    (gentle music continues)
  • 1:02 - 1:06
15 years ago, that was when
    I started to make animation.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
So, I have a day job in a
    broadcast station in Hong Kong.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    I feel so trapped, depressed,
  • 1:17 - 1:21
so I found that my mind fly
away when I was at work.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
So I started to think about scenario
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    or funny situations, random stuff,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
and I would write it in a blog back home.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
One day, I opened the software,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
and then I tried to just
    drawing color shape,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
and then I feel really good about it.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
And then I found out, oh,
    I can create animation
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    I couldn't believe.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
I think that was the click.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
I have the urge to create.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    (gentle music)
  • 2:10 - 2:14
Animation as a media give me the freedom.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    It's almost like a candy
    wrapping paper for people.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    Just easier to swallow.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    (door closing)
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    (foreign language)
  • 2:33 - 2:35
I can say more terrible stuff.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    Or evil thinking.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
I can even like put more
    personal stuff there.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
So this one is basically talk about,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    like Elephant become a monk
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    because she couldn't find dates,
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    she hates her single eyelid.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    But since K-pop is popular
    now, it's like a trend.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    But she already did the
    surgery for double eyelid.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
So that was like a lesson I want to give,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
like you're ugly at this time
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    but in different time,
    you'll be the trend.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    (wonky music)
  • 3:45 - 3:48
In the fables, I try to
    do everything in one frame
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    to tell a story without
    any transitional editing,
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    no scenes cut.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
I try to use this as a
    new challenge to myself.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    (foreign language)
  • 4:21 - 4:24
The scenario is just like a container.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
I can pretty much use any scenario
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    to make this hundred observation
    fit in this storyline.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    I think just in general,
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    I need material or story.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
    Events, accident, chaotic
    situation on the street.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
By the time I really have
    to write solid story,
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    I would just look back.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
The one thing I feel difficult
    to write during the pandemic,
  • 5:21 - 5:26
is that I don't find differences
    in people across the world.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
I feel like I lost the power of writing.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    Where's the differences?
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    During the pandemic,
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    everyone using Zoom a lot.
  • 6:03 - 6:08
I think maybe I can just use
    Zoom to make a mockumentary.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    I'm more interested in
    stepping on the line
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    rather than crossing it,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
because stepping on it is more provoking.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    I create this legendary figure,
  • 6:34 - 6:37
the quickest man who can make panda hard.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
I think it's the toughest job
    because they want to extinct.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
They don't want to have baby anymore.
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    They don't enjoy orgasm.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
So this was in my head.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
I have to make a laboratory to do that.
  • 7:02 - 7:03
    In my work,
  • 7:03 - 7:07
    there's quite a lot of
    erotic or sexual elements.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    That was only my container.
  • 7:12 - 7:13
That's not the topic I want to tell.
  • 7:17 - 7:20
Why I enjoy and explore desire quite often
  • 7:20 - 7:22
is because we have to make choice.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
In bed, people can be more honest
  • 7:29 - 7:31
to review the other side of themselves.
  • 7:37 - 7:41
    We are facing our true
    selves more than ever.
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    Look at that one.
  • 7:52 - 7:53
    This.
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    So smooth.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    Wow, wow, wow.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    Poor lobster.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    See, they're fighting.
  • 8:13 - 8:16
I just need someone to bring up questions,
  • 8:17 - 8:20
    'cause question can bring
    me to different places.
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    Because of Covid,
  • 8:26 - 8:30
I realized more that I need
    strangers conversation.
  • 8:38 - 8:41
When I work alone in the studio,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
I kind of feeling like I was trapped.
  • 8:46 - 8:49
    I have to force myself
    to find inspiration.
  • 8:54 - 8:58
    I want the inspiration to
bump into me, like come to me.
  • 9:01 - 9:06
I think maybe I can just try
to have like a small shop
  • 9:06 - 9:08
and just put myself out there.
  • 9:20 - 9:23
I don't even want to put
the price tag on each thing,
  • 9:23 - 9:26
so I force the people to talk to me.
  • 9:26 - 9:29
    It's like forcing them
    to give me inspiration.
  • 9:29 - 9:32
Right next to this crazy cat lady.
  • 9:34 - 9:35
This is a cute one though.
  • 9:39 - 9:42
So that's pretty much me this month,
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    unpacking, moving.
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    I haven't started yet
  • 9:52 - 9:56
but I feel excited to write
    a story for each item.
  • 10:01 - 10:04
I don't have to put so much
    effort to look for inspiration
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    but now the inspiration is,
    every day it's out there.
  • 10:08 - 10:09
    Look at this arm.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    I like it.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
It's almost like dancing with this guy.
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    I love it.
  • 10:19 - 10:21
    I'm looking forward.
  • 10:21 - 10:24
Since I only settle for like few weeks.
  • 10:24 - 10:28
    Everything is in the name
    of making better work.
  • 10:28 - 10:29
    I think.
  • 10:29 - 10:30
    I hope.
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    (whimsical music)
