-
0:11 - 0:13give free concerts to promote themselves.
-
0:14 - 0:17The musicians are mostly Venezuelan migrants
-
0:17 - 0:18trying to make it in Peru.
-
0:19 - 0:20But it's hard,
-
0:20 - 0:23says lead viola player Guillermo Gonzalez.
-
0:28 - 0:30Although he's a professional musician,
-
0:30 - 0:32the only job he's been able to land,
-
0:32 - 0:34cleaning car tires,
-
0:34 - 0:36has increased injuries to his back.
-
0:36 - 0:38Most Venezuelan migrants
-
0:38 - 0:39are willing to do any job,
-
0:39 - 0:42and most without healthcare.
-
0:43 - 0:46I've stopped eating some food to buy pills.
-
0:46 - 0:48One of my colleagues gave me part of his salary,
-
0:48 - 0:50so I managed to pay for 10 appointments.
-
0:50 - 0:52But for the most part,
-
0:52 - 0:53no one gives me a hand.
-
0:57 - 0:59More than 1.2 million Venezuelans
-
0:59 - 1:01are displaced in Peru.
-
1:01 - 1:03The National Superintendency for Migration
-
1:03 - 1:06says nearly 80% of them don't have
-
1:06 - 1:08health insurance or other benefits.
-
1:11 - 1:12At the Santa Rosa Parish
-
1:12 - 1:14on the outskirts of the capital,
-
1:14 - 1:17at least 50 poor Venezuelan families
-
1:17 - 1:18live on handouts.
-
1:19 - 1:21Most don't have money for food
-
1:21 - 1:23or a stable job,
-
1:23 - 1:25and many have health problems.
-
1:25 - 1:27The law here says that only
-
1:27 - 1:29migrant children under 5 years old
-
1:29 - 1:30and pregnant women
-
1:30 - 1:32can have free medical care.
-
1:32 - 1:35The rest must have a residence card,

1:35 - 1:37but the majority doesn't have one.
-
1:39 - 1:42Joselyn Rojas says her son Cristian will soon turn 6
-
1:42 - 1:44and lose his free healthcare.

1:45 - 1:47it doesn't make much of a difference
-
1:47 - 1:48to have a work permit.
-
1:50 - 1:52My husband has the residency card,
-
1:52 - 1:54but he works in an informal job
-
1:54 - 1:56where he has no benefits.
-
1:56 - 1:58So we're simply up in the air,
-
1:58 - 1:59without anything.
-
2:01 - 2:02Economists here say
-
2:02 - 2:05Venezuelans have contributed to Peru's GDP
-
2:05 - 2:07with 0.2% last year.
-
2:07 - 2:10But the challenges continue to be great.
-
2:11 - 2:12We're talking about
-
2:12 - 2:13an extraordinary situation,
-
2:13 - 2:14for which we have to generate
-
2:14 - 2:16extraordinary norms.
-
2:16 - 2:18We are talking with the authorities
-
2:18 - 2:19to advance the paperwork
-
2:19 - 2:22as the door opener for these rights.
-
2:25 - 2:27Nearly 30% of Venezuelan migrants
-
2:27 - 2:30are professionals, but 9 out of 10
-
2:30 - 2:32do not work in their expertise.
-
2:32 - 2:34Among these musicians, there are
-
2:34 - 2:37security guards, cooks, street vendors.
-
2:37 - 2:38Many say they hope they can
-
2:38 - 2:41soon play full time, but for now,
-
2:41 - 2:43their contribution to Peruvians
-
2:43 - 2:46is music that heals the soul.
