Chain Reaction (clip)
-
0:01 - 0:06Much of the food we eat goes through
a pretty incredible journey to get to us. -
0:06 - 0:09This is especially true of avocados.
-
0:09 - 0:10They don't grow just anywhere.
-
0:10 - 0:13They need tons of sunlight
and a ton of rain, -
0:13 - 0:15which is why about 3/4
of the world's avocados -
0:15 - 0:17come from Mexico,
-
0:17 - 0:19mostly from the state of Michoacan.
-
0:19 - 0:22Americans are eating
about three times more avocados -
0:22 - 0:24than they did almost 20 years ago.
-
0:24 - 0:27Higher demand is good news for Michoacan,
-
0:27 - 0:29but when a region booms,
-
0:29 - 0:32forces often much shadier
aim to get in on the action. -
0:32 - 0:33And trust me,
-
0:33 - 0:36that's part of your food's journey too.
-
0:37 - 0:40CHAIN REACTION
-
0:42 - 0:45(Michael) Avocados are
big business in Mexico. -
0:45 - 0:48The state of Michoacan exports
the majority of them -
0:48 - 0:50to the tune of almost
3 billion dollars a year. -
0:52 - 0:56I'm someone that really enjoys avocados.
-
0:57 - 1:00The people here live off the avocado.
-
1:01 - 1:03(Michael) Locals call it green gold.
-
1:03 - 1:07Over the past 20 years,
America's obsession with the avocado -
1:07 - 1:10has driven industry profits and
lifted many people here out of poverty. -
1:11 - 1:13Last year, the United States imported
-
1:13 - 1:17a record-breaking 2.1 billion pounds
of the fruit from Mexico. -
1:18 - 1:20"The green gold."
-
1:21 - 1:24This was a very poor
-
1:24 - 1:28and f**ked up region,
-
1:29 - 1:33but people have improved
their economic situation. -
1:34 - 1:38(Michael) And these days, money
in this green gold comes at a price. -
1:38 - 1:42Criminal organizations like,
the Cartel de Jalisco and Las Viagras -
1:42 - 1:44have set their sights on the fruit
-
1:44 - 1:46as a way to diversify
their illicit portfolios -
1:46 - 1:49by extorting growers and stealing land.
-
1:50 - 1:52We're heading up to meet up
with a group of people -
1:52 - 1:54who have organized to defend this land,
-
1:54 - 1:58defend this area from cartels
and criminal groups. -
1:58 - 2:00We're coming up to their checkpoint.
-
2:00 - 2:02You can see a guy standing out here
with an M4 rifle, -
2:03 - 2:04a sniper up there--
-
2:04 - 2:06You're going to see
people like this all over town -
2:06 - 2:08trying to protect this community.
-
2:09 - 2:11Everyone gather.
-
2:12 - 2:15Look, right now,
I'll leave with the officers. -
2:15 - 2:19We'll do a crime prevention patrol.
-
2:19 - 2:22We'll check that our boundaries are good.
-
2:23 - 2:26(Michael) Hector "Tata" Saavedra is
the commander of a local defense group -
2:26 - 2:29that rose up against
the Knights Templar Cartel -
2:29 - 2:34when they tried to take over large swaths
of Michoacan avocado orchards in 2013. -
2:35 - 2:40At the beginning, we defended ourselves
with machetes, sticks, rocks... -
2:41 - 2:44We blocked every way to access our town.
-
2:45 - 2:47No one gets out, no one gets in.
-
2:47 - 2:49This was our best defense.
-
2:51 - 2:53Things are a bit different today.
-
2:54 - 3:00Close the convoy at about 50 meters
for each vehicle, please. -
3:00 - 3:02Copiado [inaudible]
-
3:02 - 3:07We're in the heart of
the avocado production zone. -
3:07 - 3:09Organized crime is all around us.
-
3:11 - 3:14There have been situations
where we've been ambushed. -
3:15 - 3:17But it's our job to keep doing this.
-
3:18 - 3:22(Michael) Last year, Tata and his men
found themselves in a firefight -
3:22 - 3:24with members of the Cartel de Jalisco.
-
3:24 - 3:25(bullets ricochetting)
-
3:25 - 3:27The shootout lasted close to an hour.
-
3:27 - 3:30The cartel's gunmen eventually retreated,
-
3:30 - 3:33but not before Tata and his men
captured one of their wounded. -
3:47 - 3:50When Tata and his team head out on patrol,
-
3:50 - 3:54it's people like Virgilio Agustin Serrano,
a local-farmer-turned-tower-guard, -
3:54 - 3:56who manages the checkpoints.
-
3:56 - 3:59I'm going to f**king devour a rabbit.
-
3:59 - 4:00Look at this damn rabbit.
-
4:06 - 4:07Spicy?
-
4:08 - 4:09No
-
4:10 - 4:11It's not too spicy?
-
4:12 - 4:14How often do you eat rabbit?
-
4:15 - 4:18Only when gringos come to visit.
-
4:18 - 4:19(laughter)
-
4:20 - 4:23(Michael) What kind of attention
did the avocado industry -
4:23 - 4:24bring to this community?
-
4:24 - 4:29Our town used to be ignored.
-
4:29 - 4:32But since the avocado production started,
-
4:32 - 4:35the town has become known
-
4:35 - 4:37and more developed.
-
4:40 - 4:42(Michael) So these avocados
are ready to cut? -
4:42 - 4:45(Hector) This will be ready to cut
-
4:45 - 4:48at the beginning of December.
-
4:50 - 4:54Hector's land produces
roughly 20 tons of avocados, -
4:54 - 4:55and at 40 pesos a [box],
-
4:55 - 5:00a farm like Virgilio's can rake in
some 23,000 dollars per harvest. -
5:00 - 5:03There's a lot of people in the US
that love these things, -
5:03 - 5:04but I don't think they realize
-
5:04 - 5:06what all of Michoacan goes through
-
5:06 - 5:07to not only harvest them,
-
5:07 - 5:10but to keep you and the community safe
-
5:10 - 5:12from the cartels and criminal groups.
-
5:12 - 5:14What's your message to them to remember
-
5:14 - 5:16when they eat an avocado?
-
5:16 - 5:20Producing avocados is very hard.
-
5:20 - 5:22I'm not talking about hard work,
-
5:22 - 5:25but it takes a lot of organization.
-
5:25 - 5:29In some case, it costs blood or lives.
-
5:29 - 5:33Don't stop eating avocados.
-
5:33 - 5:35You can rest assured
it's a quality product -
5:35 - 5:38and that it's produced
by Mexicans, Michoacans, -
5:38 - 5:39and indigenous hands.
-
5:39 - 5:42When's the last time
you actually got to enjoy one? -
5:42 - 5:44I ate one this morning.
-
5:45 - 5:47I constantly eat avocados.
-
5:47 - 5:48I eat the ones I produce.
-
5:49 - 5:51I eat them every day.
-
5:53 - 5:56So, definitely the freshest
piece of avocado I have ever eaten. -
5:56 - 5:57Cheers!
-
6:04 - 6:07It's good, it's very good, yeah.
-
6:08 - 6:09Yes, good.
-
6:10 - 6:12I don't know if I should eat
this whole thing, though. -
6:12 - 6:14I'm allergic. (laughter)
-
6:18 - 6:21(Michael) For you, personally,
what are you protecting? -
6:21 - 6:24(Hector) I'm personally
protecting my family. -
6:26 - 6:30This is how we normally practice.
-
6:31 - 6:34Are you afraid that things
will go back to the way they were? -
6:34 - 6:37Things may go back as they were.
-
6:37 - 6:39But let's hope not.
-
6:39 - 6:44Fear has always been with us.
-
6:44 - 6:47This is the reason we got organized.
-
6:47 - 6:50We wouldn't have done it
if we were not afraid.

- Description:
-
The exponential increase in avocado consumption in the US and worldwide in the last two decades has brought growing prosperity and development for the Mexican state of Michoacán, the only state authorized by the American government to export avocados to the US. Certainly, the popularity of the fruit is something very positive for all the actors involved in its production, distribution and commercialization because the economic benefits could be very important.
However, what many consumers don't know is the complex situation of violence and armed conflicts that exist in the region due to the interest of the different cartels that seek to become part of the growing avocado business in a violent and illegal manner. The dangers and violence that avocado growers and their families face is so great that many have decided to create their own armed groups to protect themselves due to the lack of support from the authorities.
While the US avocado consumer continued to enjoy a year-round availability of the fruit, a sudden price hike in early 2022, and the threat of potential shortages, brought back to the public eye the news about the dangers and violence that avocado producers in Michoacán have faced for a long time, and the cost and sacrifice they have to pay daily to continue producing and sending this highly demanded fruit to consumers outside their borders.
