A kid’s response to spam messages | Dana Mneimne | TEDxYouth@WellspringLC

  • 0:12 - 0:13
    It was dark Saturday night,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    when I was alone
  • 0:15 - 0:19
and I was eating my Nescafé cheesecake
    - that's the best part of my story -
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    and my parents were out.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
Then comes a message on my phone,
and it made the sound "ding".
  • 0:25 - 0:29
I opened it and found out
it was talking about a hunter
  • 0:29 - 0:31
who goes inside your room and kills you
  • 0:31 - 0:34
if you don't send this message
    to twenty contacts.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
I got so scared, so I did as they said.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Except I forgot and only sent it to ten.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
So, when my parents came back,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
I told my father to come
and check if I was still there.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So, at night, when I was trying
    to go to sleep,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
I felt someone go inside my room.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
I thought that would be my father,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    except I noticed
    the creature had long hair.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
I thought, "My father does not
    have long hair."
  • 0:56 - 1:00
It came, it took me by the neck,
    I jumped up to scream.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
Then I noticed it was just my sister.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    (Laughter)
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    I think you're all wondering
why she took me by the neck.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
Well, it's her way of loving me.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    (Laughter)
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Another time, I got another message
which was telling me to go check
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    "Charlie Charlie
    are you here?" on YouTube.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    So I did.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
I found that it was talking
    about an Indian ghost
  • 1:20 - 1:22
who has all those devils on his side,
  • 1:22 - 1:26
and if you played the game,
and you weren't polite to Charlie,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
he'll go inside your room and kill you.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    So I played the game,
and tried to be polite to Charlie,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    but I wasn't very sure.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
So, again, I told my father
to come and check if I was okay.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
So, when I woke up, I was still alive.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
A third time, I got another message.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
But this one actually made me
happy and excited, not sad and frustrated.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    It was talking about wishes.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
You got to wish any what you want,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
but only you have to send it
    to ten contacts.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    And within an hour,
    your wish will come true.
  • 2:00 - 2:06
I did as they said, and I waited -
first hour - second hour - third hour -
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    I'm bored, I give up.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
I got so fed up of those messages,
and I wanted to do something.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    I was thinking so much.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
Then, it come to me, I know what to do.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
I could make my own message.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    I made my own message,
I was also talking about wishes,
  • 2:22 - 2:29
but instead of only sending it to ten,
you had to send it to 105 contacts.
  • 2:29 - 2:30
I sent it to one of my friends,
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    and she was like,
    "I don't have 105 contacts -
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    I don't have 105 contacts!"
  • 2:38 - 2:40
Then I told her I made this one.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    So we both agreed
    to stop creating those messages.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    For me to sleep better,
and for you to sleep better,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
let's all stop creating those messages.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    Thank you.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    (Applause) (Cheers)
