Ethnography: Ellen Isaacs at TEDxBroadway

0:08 - 0:12Forty years ago, if you sat in front of a computer, this is what you would see,
-
0:12 - 0:16a blinking cursor waiting patiently for you to tell it what to do. If you wanted
-
0:16 - 0:21to see your files, you would type ls for list, and then it would show you your
-
0:21 - 0:24files like this. They'd all look the same, even though some might be text, some
-
0:24 - 0:29might be images. But now if you want to see your files, you just open up the
-
0:29 - 0:33folder and you look, and you can see some are text, some are images, because
-
0:33 - 0:38they look that way. If you wanted to move a file from one folder to another, you
-
0:38 - 0:43would type mv for move, the name of the file, issacsfile.doc, and then something
-
0:43 - 0:49like .doc/.doc/talks, which is the location of the destination folder local
-
0:49 - 0:54relative to the current folder. Now you drag the file from one folder to
-
0:54 - 1:00another. We take this visual display of our files and folders for granted, but
-
1:00 - 1:04somebody had to think of that. At a time when everybody who used computers typed
-
1:04 - 1:08those kinds of cryptic commands, somebody had to, first, notice that this wasn't
-
1:08 - 1:13so easy and second, think of a better way to do it. Someone had to think that
-
1:13 - 1:16you could draw little pictures of files and folders on the screen and manipulate
-
1:16 - 1:20them by dragging a little box around on the table top. Well, those people were
-
1:20 - 1:24Doug Engelbart and Alan Kay. Engelbart invented the mouse, and Kay invented
-
1:24 - 1:28what's called graphical user interfaces. At the time, Alan Kay worked at Xerox
-
1:28 - 1:34Park in California, which is where I work today. And in 1971, he said the best
-
1:34 - 1:39way to predict the future is to invent it, and that's what he did. So this is at
-
1:39 - 1:44a time when computers looked like this, giant boxes of technology in big rooms,
-
1:44 - 1:48hooked up to these terminals, which is where you typed those commands. They were
-
1:48 - 1:51very expensive. So you had to share them, and people would sign up for time on
-
1:51 - 1:56the computer. So it's not surprising that at a time like this, Ken Olsen, the
-
1:56 - 2:00head of a very big computer company called Digital, said there's no way anyone
-
2:00 - 2:05would want a computer in the home. Somebody had to think that you could take all
-
2:05 - 2:09that technology and compress it into a little box that would sit on the desktop,
-
2:09 - 2:13and it would be dedicated to just one person's use. So that's something we all
-
2:13 - 2:18take for granted now, but at the time, that would be extravagant. Well, those
-
2:18 - 2:22people worked at Xerox Park. And then in 1973, they invented the Alto, the first
-
2:22 - 2:28graphical personal computer, and that led to the Apple Macintosh, the IBM PC,
-
2:28 - 2:32and now all the slick desktop, laptop and tablet computers that we all use
-
2:32 - 2:38today. So we're here today talking about the best of what Broadway can be. And I
-
2:38 - 2:41think that the reason that I was invited here is that the organizers were hoping
-
2:41 - 2:44that some of that magic from the early Park scientists is still lingering in the
-
2:44 - 2:51halls where I work, revealing to me a vision of where you will be in 20 years.
-
2:51 - 2:56Well, I'm afraid that hasn't happened, but there is one bit of Park magic that I
-
2:56 - 3:00can share with you, and it has to do with a method that you can use to figure it
-
3:00 - 3:05out, called ethnography. So let's go back to the 1980s, when a Xerox copier took
-
3:05 - 3:11up an entire room. There was another Park scientist, Lucy Suchman, and she had
-
3:11 - 3:15the idea that maybe if you're building technology for people, you should watch
-
3:15 - 3:19them using it. So she decided to watch some people using a Xerox copier. She
-
3:19 - 3:22grabbed a couple of her colleagues from down the hall, and she asked them to
-
3:22 - 3:26make copies. So I'm going to show you a short clip from a video from this
-
3:26 - 3:30historic video of these two people making copies.
-
4:29 - 4:33So it turns out that those two people from down the hall are
-
4:33 - 4:37world-renowned computer scientists. One of them went on to win the equivalent of
-
4:37 - 4:41the Noble Prize in computer science. So clearly the problem is not that the
-
4:41 - 4:45people are dumb. The problem was with the design of the copier. Today, it is now
-
4:45 - 4:49common practice for companies to do what's called usability testing. But back
-
4:49 - 4:53then it wasn't done. Lucy Suchman had to think of it, and she went further. She
-
4:53 - 4:57realized that you could observe people, not just to figure out how to make their
-
4:57 - 5:00products easier to use, but also to figure out what products to build in the
-
5:00 - 5:04first place. So this practice of observing people in their natural environments
-
5:04 - 5:08to understand their needs is called ethnography. At the time, it was an academic
-
5:08 - 5:12practice. It grew out of anthropology. Lucy Suchman was the first one to apply
-
5:12 - 5:19it to industry. So even today not everybody uses ethnography. Most companies
-
5:19 - 5:22will try to understand their customers' needs by asking them directly, using
-
5:22 - 5:27tools like focus groups or surveys. But asking people to tell you what they want
-
5:27 - 5:31gets you only so far. As the anthropologist Margaret Mead said, "What people
-
5:31 - 5:36say, what people do and what people say they do are entirely different things."
-
5:36 - 5:40When people do their jobs or just any ordinary activity, much of what you do
-
5:40 - 5:44just becomes invisible to you. It's just what you do. But if you watch people,
-
5:44 - 5:48you start to realize a lot of times people are working around their tools. And
-
5:48 - 5:53it's these gaps, or problems people work around, that are opportunities for
-
5:53 - 5:57innovation. But, the thing is, a lot of times when you point them out to people,
-
5:57 - 6:01they'll say, well, sure, it's obvious that's a problem. But they don't think to
-
6:01 - 6:06tell you about it when you ask. To notice it, you have to get out and watch. So
-
6:06 - 6:09I like to think of my job as an ethnographer like this. You sit and you watch
-
6:09 - 6:13the chaos that is human behavior. And if you're patient, and you watch for a
-
6:13 - 6:17while, and you have a naive state of mind, you start to notice insights that are
-
6:17 - 6:22obvious after you point them out. You start to notice the hidden obvious. Well,
-
6:22 - 6:27how does this work? What is ethnography like? Well, let me give you two examples
-
6:27 - 6:32from my work. So the last couple of years, I've been studying parking. Now, I
-
6:32 - 6:36realize parking is an odd place to go looking for technology opportunities, but
-
6:36 - 6:39we all know New York is especially -- the parking is in the area where there's a
-
6:39 - 6:44lot of problems and a lot of needs not being met. So to study parking, my
-
6:44 - 6:47colleagues and I spent a lot of time hanging around on street corners watching
-
6:47 - 6:53cars parking, trucks unloading, enforcement officers giving tickets. And we've
-
6:53 - 6:57seen a lot of things you might expect and some that you might not.
-
7:05 - 7:08So one of the things that we started to notice gradually was the parking signs
-
7:08 - 7:13and how difficult it can be to tell the one thing you want to know quickly: Can
-
7:13 - 7:17I park here now in the few seconds you have as you're driving by? So I'm going
-
7:17 - 7:21to show you a sign for about that amount of time, and I want you to figure out
-
7:21 - 7:25can you park here now. Let's say it's Wednesday, early in the morning. It's 7
-
7:25 - 7:35AM. Can you park here now? Okay, let's look again. Okay, this is hard, not just
-
7:35 - 7:38because there's so much going on, but you'll notice that Wednesday is not
-
7:38 - 7:43mentioned, and 7 AM is not in any of the time ranges. So you have to infer that
-
7:43 - 7:47because it's not covered, you can park here, at least to the left of the signs.
-
7:47 - 7:57Okay, here's another one. It's 3 PM. Can you stop here now? Okay, let's look
-
7:57 - 8:02again. So the bottom sign says no parking at 3 PM. So that implies that you can
-
8:02 - 8:08stop. And the top no stopping sign doesn't cover 3 PM. So that implies, again,
-
8:08 - 8:12you have to figure out that you can stop here. Okay, and here's one more, where
-
8:12 - 8:19I challenge you to figure out what you can do here at any time. The problem here
-
8:19 - 8:22is that parking signs focus on restrictions, no this, no that, when what you
-
8:22 - 8:28want to know is what you can do. Now, when I say it like this, it seems obvious.
-
8:28 - 8:31But when you go and you ask people to tell you what are some of your problems
-
8:31 - 8:34you have with parking, they generally don't go complaining and saying, you
-
8:34 - 8:37know, parking signs are difficult to read quickly as you drive by because they
-
8:37 - 8:40focus on restrictions. To really understand this, you have to get out and
-
8:40 - 8:45watch, and it can take a while. Because we were looking at so many different
-
8:45 - 8:48aspects of parking, the signs didn't really come into focus for us until the
-
8:48 - 8:53fourth city and over 1,000 photos and videos. Once we noticed it, it was
-
8:53 - 8:57obvious. So what could you do about this? Well, one
-
8:57 - 9:01thing you could do is redesign the signs, and so here's one possible way you
-
9:01 - 9:05could design that second sign. And on the right, you see it's organized by time
-
9:05 - 9:09of day, from morning through night. So at any time, you can find now, and then
-
9:09 - 9:13you could just look to the right and see, can I park? Green, yes, red, no,
-
9:13 - 9:16orange, there's some kind of restriction, like here it's deliveries only. And if
-
9:16 - 9:21you want to be kind to internationals, you could include symbols. Okay, so
-
9:21 - 9:25that's one example of how ethnography found an unmet need. Let me give you
-
9:25 - 9:29another one. So we noticed a lot of times when we we're out looking that were a
-
9:29 - 9:33lot of loading zones marked by yellow curbs that weren't being used. Here we are
-
9:33 - 9:37looking for a parking spot, and there's just loading as far as the eye can see,
-
9:37 - 9:41and not very many trucks using it and, yet we can't park. On the other hand, we
-
9:41 - 9:44saw a lot of times when trucks were trying to make deliveries and couldn't find
-
9:44 - 9:48a loading zone. And since they have to park near where they're going to be
-
9:48 - 9:52delivering, they get creative. So they double park, and they block in cars, both
-
9:52 - 9:58diagonal and parallel, they park in the median, blocking cars from turning left,
-
9:58 - 10:03they park in the crosswalk, blocking people from crossing the street, and they
-
10:03 - 10:10park on the sidewalk. So the problem here is that loading zones take up precious
-
10:10 - 10:14parking resources and, yet, they don't really meet the need. Again, I point this
-
10:14 - 10:18out. It seems obvious, but when we talk to people about their parking problems,
-
10:18 - 10:22they don't say loading zones are inefficient. They say there's not enough
-
10:22 - 10:27parking. So what can you do about this? Well, what you really like to do is to
-
10:27 - 10:30have the spots for loading when they're needed and then make them available to
-
10:30 - 10:34everyone else when they're not. So this is something we're doing right now. We
-
10:34 - 10:38have built a prototype parking meter that can change its state from parking to
-
10:38 - 10:43loading, no parking and other states. And since trucks have GPS's -- oops --
-
10:43 - 10:49they have GPS's, and they know where they're going, we can take a spot and
-
10:49 - 10:52change it from parking to loading, and then when they come and they park, they
-
10:52 - 10:57can put it back to parking. Okay, so what does all this have to do with
-
10:57 - 11:01Broadway? Well, what I'm trying to say is that while I don't know what you need
-
11:01 - 11:05to do to make Broadway the best it can be, you can get some ideas by using
-
11:05 - 11:10ethnography. It's a very general tool. We've used it in many different domains:
-
11:10 - 11:15hospitals, nursing, call centers, retail stores, young people using mobile
-
11:15 - 11:19devices, lots more, and you could use it on Broadway. So you could accompany a
-
11:19 - 11:23family as they're spending a day out on Broadway. Or you could watch someone as
-
11:23 - 11:29they're planning a day or an evening for a night out and a show. Or you could
-
11:29 - 11:32just hang out at the tickets booth and watch people buying tickets or people
-
11:32 - 11:37checking into hotels or people choosing a restaurant or window shopping or going
-
11:37 - 11:41to a show. All those things. And maybe if you're patient, and you do it for a
-
11:41 - 11:46while, and you keep a naive state of mind, maybe you will discover the hidden
-
11:46 - 11:50obvious. Maybe you'll be the one to think of a novel idea that people will take
-
11:50 - 11:54for granted in 20 years. Thank you.
