-
This episode: Garbage Pail Kids!
-
- (Finebros) So today you're
not reacting to a video.
-
- Why are you putting
the laptop here?! Come on!
-
- (Finebros) Instead
you're reacting to this.
-
- (pleased) Oh!
-
Cards of grossness?
-
- This. What is this?
-
- They're weird!
-
- What is this?
-
I don't know what they're for.
-
- Garbage Pail Kids?
-
- Are these like trading cards?
-
- Is this supposed to be for kids?
-
- Oh no, I've seen these.
-
- Yeah! I love these!
-
- I used to have these.
-
These were like my life. I loved these.
-
- They're, uh... not
what I'd want for a gift.
-
- (children) Question time!
-
- (Finebros) So what these are,
-
they're called Garbage
Pail Kids trading cards.
-
- Noticed.
-
- (Finebros) Have you ever heard
of the Garbage Pail Kids?
-
- No.
-
- No. They're gross.
-
- No, and I kinda wish I hadn't.
-
- It sounds like a terrible idea.
-
No offense to the people who made it.
-
- These things scared me
when my dad introduced me.
-
Don't think they should be shown.
-
- (Finebros) So these cards
were very, very popular with kids
-
in the 1980s.
- That makes sense.
-
The '80s were a weird time.
-
- (Finebros) Are trading cards today
-
something that kids still like a lot,
-
or is it more of something in the past?
-
- They're more of the past cards.
-
- Some people, they want to be old-school,
-
and they still trade cards.
-
- People don't really use cards
anymore. They use their phones.
-
- If you want to have
success with trading cards,
-
you have to have some powers,
not just pictures.
-
- I don't know. Pokemon's pretty popular.
-
- That's kinda like the third-grade,
second-grade genre.
-
In fifth grade, it's really
not a popular thing.
-
- (Finebros) Why do you think
these were so popular?
-
- (perplexed) I don't know.
-
- I actually have no idea.
-
This is not kids-appropriate.
-
- There wasn't that many things to do,
-
'cause you didn't have
phones and iPads back then.
-
- Cool stuff is rare back then.
-
But now it's like, you can
find a lot of cool things.
-
- (Finebros) Well, a lot of people say
-
that the drawings are gross.
What do you think?
-
- Yeah. But that's what makes it funny.
-
- They are. They're very disturbing.
-
- Who wants to look
at something that's gross?
-
Bro, that's not-- it's not right.
-
- I agree with them. I mean, a lot.
-
Look at this one.
-
Who'd get entertained off of this?
-
- (Finebros) So now we're gonna
go through the cards one by one.
-
- No.
-
I've seen... cards that have scared me.
-
- (Finebros) Totally okay.
You don't have to look at them then.
-
So first one we're gonna
have you look at is Large Marge.
-
- Yeah. Okay. (chuckles awkwardly)
-
She likes food.
-
- She has, like, the whole
double-chin thing going.
-
- It's pretty gross and disturbing.
-
- (Finebros) And what about Hurt Curt?
-
- Well, it seems he's one
of those 1990s skating kids.
-
- That one's okay.
-
I would say it's the least grossest one.
-
- You can tell it's not
the first time he's gotten hurt.
-
Two reasons: his name's Hurt Curt,
-
and he has a Band-Aid on his face.
-
- Would it make sense if a card
was like, he-- "Nice Curt"?
-
He's actually skateboarding
instead of getting a crash!
-
- (Finebros) And what
about Frank N. Stein?
-
- Isn't Frankenstein supposed to be green?
-
- It kinda looks like Chucky
but with blond hair.
-
- He's just stepping on a cat.
-
The cat is just like... (screechy yowl)
-
- Maybe he's too big
and he can't see the cat,
-
and then he just stepped on it.
-
I don't think he would
do it purposely, right?
-
- I hate Halloween already enough.
-
You're making me hate it more, people.
-
- (Finebros) And what do
you think of Mugged Marcus?
-
- This one is disturbing.
-
- I don't like him right away.
-
- Looks like a Cabbage
Patch Kid got mugged.
-
- It's really sad. I don't like
how people bully people.
-
- He just looks so happy,
even though he just got mugged.
-
- His dignity is stolen.
He has a swollen eye.
-
He has scars all over
his face. He has bruises.
-
- Why is this even a card for kids?
-
- (Finebros) And finally, Starin' Darren.
-
- I can't explain this one.
-
- Chubby baby with a lot of eyes.
-
- He has so many eyes! It's so creepy!
-
- Disturbing. Keeping this card face-down.
-
- Imagine having all those eyes
-
and having your clothes on over that.
-
What would that-- like,
are you half-blind now?
-
- (Finebros) So when these
were the most popular
-
back in the '80s, some schools
banned them from the classroom.
-
- Exactly. I agree.
-
- (Finebros) What are
some reasons you think
-
a school would not want
these cards around?
-
- 'Cause people love them so much,
-
they would be trading them
while class was going on?
-
- Some of them are gory, disgusting,
-
not appropriate for children.
-
- Of course the teachers
wouldn't allow fifth graders
-
to bring this in and show it
to kindergartners or first graders
-
and traumatize them for life.
-
- I think schools are too much
about it. Like, they overreact.
-
Because they want to protect
the kids, which I understand.
-
But kids, like, they're people
and they know what to do.
-
- (Finebros) So these were originally
made in part to make fun
-
or another popular toy of the 1980s
-
that were called Cabbage Patch Kids.
-
Have you ever heard of that toy?
- No.
-
- No.
-
- No, I haven't.
-
Are they, like, just pictures of cabbages?
-
- I've heard of them.
I just don't know what they are.
-
- Sometimes I see their ads on TV.
-
- I've seen what a Cabbage Patch Kid is
-
from Toys "R" Us, Target,
and The Goldbergs.
-
- (Finebros) So we're gonna
show you a picture here
-
of the Cabbage Patch dolls
that these were making fun of.
-
- (realizing) Ohh! That's what they are.
-
- They're cute.
-
- I don't know why they're making of them.
-
They're cuter than you guys!
-
- These things are terrifying.
-
- I've never really wanted
a Cabbage Patch Kid.
-
I mean, they kinda just creep me out.
-
- Let's compare.
-
Yep. Mm-hmm.
-
Yeah, I see it.
-
- (Finebros) So back to the cards.
These went away for a while.
-
But they made a comeback in 2003,
-
and they still are making them today.
-
- (surprised) They do? Are you kidding me?
-
- (Finebros) And we have
some of the new cards
-
to show you right now.
-
- (shrilly) That's even worse!!
-
- These look worse.
-
- I'm gonna have nightmares.
-
- I would definitely want these.
-
- They just have a newer feel
to them, like the vibrant colors.
-
- (laughing) What the heck is this?
-
Flushed Francis?
-
- (Finebros) So which cards
do you like better:
-
the new style or the old style?
- I don't like any of them.
-
- I just hate both of them.
-
- The new ones.
-
- The newer ones.
-
- I think I like the new ones more.
-
- I just like the old style.
-
- These ones, they just appeal to me more.
-
These were the originals.
-
- (Finebros) So do you think
then these cards,
-
now that they're back,
are going to be as popular now
-
as they were back then?
- No.
-
- No.
-
- Yeah.
-
- No.
-
- Hopefully not.
-
- I certainly hope not.
-
I don't really want to see these again.
-
- No.
-
I don't know why
they would still buy them.
-
- I don't think they'll be
as popular, but it's a good idea.
-
- I hope it doesn't.
-
If this gets popular again, I will cry.
-
- I don't, because there's
all these new TV shows
-
that are coming out with cards
and stuff, such as Pokemon.
-
You can actually play games with them.
-
- No, I don't, because
now kids as young as 10
-
are already getting
their brand-new iPhones.
-
- No.
-
They aren't the originals.
-
Like, they don't have the same feel to it.
