What makes a hero? - Matthew Winkler

  • 0:14 - 0:15
    What do Harry Potter,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    all have in common
with the heroes of ancient myths?
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    (Roar)
  • 0:21 - 0:24
What if I told you they are all variants
    of the same hero?
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    Do you believe that?
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    Joseph Campbell did.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
He studied myths from all over the world
    and published a book called
  • 0:33 - 0:35
"The Hero with a Thousand Faces,"
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    retelling dozens of stories
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    and explaining how each
    represents the mono-myth,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    or Hero's Journey.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
So, what is the "hero's journey"?
  • 0:45 - 0:46
Think of it as a cycle.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    The journey begins and ends
    in a hero's ordinary world,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    but the quest passes
    through an unfamiliar, special world.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
Along the way, there are some key events.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
Think about your favorite book or movie.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    Does it follow this pattern?
  • 1:03 - 1:05
Status quo, that's where we start.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    1:00: Call to Adventure.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
The hero receives a mysterious message.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    An invitation, a challenge?
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    2:00: Assistance
  • 1:16 - 1:21
    The hero needs some help,
    probably from someone older, wiser.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    3:00: Departure
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    The hero crosses the threshold
    from his normal, safe home,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    and enters the special
    world and adventure.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    We're not in Kansas anymore.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    4:00: Trials
  • 1:33 - 1:34
Being a hero is hard work:
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    our hero solves a riddle,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    slays a monster,
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    escapes from a trap.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    5:00: Approach
  • 1:42 - 1:45
It's time to face the biggest ordeal,
    the hero's worst fear.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    (Roar)
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    6:00: Crisis
  • 1:51 - 1:53
This is the hero's darkest hour.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
He faces death and possibly even dies,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    only to be reborn.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    7:00: Treasure
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    (Roar)
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    As a result, the hero
    claims some treasure,
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    special recognition, or power.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    8:00: Result
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    This can vary between stories.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
Do the monsters bow down before the hero,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
or do they chase him as he flees
    from the special world?
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    9:00: Return
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    After all that adventure,
the hero returns to his ordinary world.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    10:00: New Life
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    This quest has changed the hero;
he has outgrown his old life.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    11:00: Resolution
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    All the tangled plot lines
    get straightened out.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    12:00: Status Quo,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
but upgraded to a new level.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    Nothing is quite the same
    once you are a hero.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    Many popular books and movies
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    follow this ancient
    formula pretty closely.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
But let's see how well "The Hunger Games"
    fits the hero's journey template.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    When does Katniss Everdeen
    hear her call to adventure
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    that gets the story moving?
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    When her sister's name
    is called from the lottery.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    How about assistance?
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    Is anyone going to help
    her on her adventure?
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Haymitch.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    What about departure?
  • 3:08 - 3:10
Does she leave her ordinary world?
  • 3:10 - 3:13
She gets on a train to the capital.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
OK, so you get the idea.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
What do you have in common
    with Harry Potter,
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo?
  • 3:19 - 3:21
Well, you're human, just like them.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    The Hero's Journey myth
    exists in all human cultures
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    and keeps getting updated,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
because we humans reflect on our world
  • 3:29 - 3:32
through symbolic stories of our own lives.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    You leave your comfort zone,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
have an experience that transforms you,
  • 3:38 - 3:39
and then you recover and do it again.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    You don't literally slay
    dragons or fight Voldemort,
  • 3:43 - 3:46
but you face problems just as scary.
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    Joseph Campbell said,
  • 3:47 - 3:51
"In the cave you fear to enter
    lies the treasure you seek."
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    What is the symbolic
    cave you fear to enter?
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    Auditions for the school play?
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    Baseball tryouts?
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    Love?
  • 4:01 - 4:05
Watch for this formula in books,
movies, and TV shows you come across.
  • 4:05 - 4:06
You will certainly see it again.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    But also be sensitive
to it in your own life.
  • 4:10 - 4:11
Listen for your call to adventure.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    Accept the challenge.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    Conquer your fear
and claim the treasure you seek.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    And then,
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    do it all over again.
