What makes a hero? - Matthew Winkler
-
0:14 - 0:15What do Harry Potter,
-
0:15 - 0:18Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo
-
0:18 - 0:20all have in common
with the heroes of ancient myths? -
0:20 - 0:21(Roar)
-
0:21 - 0:24What if I told you they are all variants
of the same hero? -
0:26 - 0:27Do you believe that?
-
0:27 - 0:29Joseph Campbell did.
-
0:29 - 0:33He studied myths from all over the world
and published a book called -
0:33 - 0:35"The Hero with a Thousand Faces,"
-
0:35 - 0:36retelling dozens of stories
-
0:36 - 0:39and explaining how each
represents the mono-myth, -
0:39 - 0:41or Hero's Journey.
-
0:42 - 0:45So, what is the "hero's journey"?
-
0:45 - 0:46Think of it as a cycle.
-
0:47 - 0:51The journey begins and ends
in a hero's ordinary world, -
0:51 - 0:55but the quest passes
through an unfamiliar, special world. -
0:55 - 0:58Along the way, there are some key events.
-
0:58 - 1:00Think about your favorite book or movie.
-
1:00 - 1:02Does it follow this pattern?
-
1:03 - 1:05Status quo, that's where we start.
-
1:07 - 1:101:00: Call to Adventure.
-
1:10 - 1:12The hero receives a mysterious message.
-
1:12 - 1:14An invitation, a challenge?
-
1:15 - 1:162:00: Assistance
-
1:16 - 1:21The hero needs some help,
probably from someone older, wiser. -
1:21 - 1:233:00: Departure
-
1:23 - 1:26The hero crosses the threshold
from his normal, safe home, -
1:26 - 1:29and enters the special
world and adventure. -
1:29 - 1:31We're not in Kansas anymore.
-
1:31 - 1:334:00: Trials
-
1:33 - 1:34Being a hero is hard work:
-
1:34 - 1:35our hero solves a riddle,
-
1:35 - 1:37slays a monster,
-
1:37 - 1:38escapes from a trap.
-
1:39 - 1:425:00: Approach
-
1:42 - 1:45It's time to face the biggest ordeal,
the hero's worst fear. -
1:46 - 1:47(Roar)
-
1:48 - 1:506:00: Crisis
-
1:51 - 1:53This is the hero's darkest hour.
-
1:53 - 1:56He faces death and possibly even dies,
-
1:56 - 1:57only to be reborn.
-
1:59 - 2:017:00: Treasure
-
2:01 - 2:02(Roar)
-
2:02 - 2:06As a result, the hero
claims some treasure, -
2:06 - 2:07special recognition, or power.
-
2:08 - 2:108:00: Result
-
2:10 - 2:12This can vary between stories.
-
2:12 - 2:14Do the monsters bow down before the hero,
-
2:14 - 2:18or do they chase him as he flees
from the special world? -
2:18 - 2:209:00: Return
-
2:21 - 2:24After all that adventure,
the hero returns to his ordinary world. -
2:25 - 2:2710:00: New Life
-
2:27 - 2:31This quest has changed the hero;
he has outgrown his old life. -
2:32 - 2:3511:00: Resolution
-
2:35 - 2:37All the tangled plot lines
get straightened out. -
2:38 - 2:4112:00: Status Quo,
-
2:41 - 2:43but upgraded to a new level.
-
2:43 - 2:45Nothing is quite the same
once you are a hero. -
2:46 - 2:47Many popular books and movies
-
2:47 - 2:50follow this ancient
formula pretty closely. -
2:50 - 2:54But let's see how well "The Hunger Games"
fits the hero's journey template. -
2:54 - 2:56When does Katniss Everdeen
hear her call to adventure -
2:56 - 2:58that gets the story moving?
-
2:58 - 3:00When her sister's name
is called from the lottery. -
3:01 - 3:03How about assistance?
-
3:03 - 3:05Is anyone going to help
her on her adventure? -
3:05 - 3:07Haymitch.
-
3:07 - 3:08What about departure?
-
3:08 - 3:10Does she leave her ordinary world?
-
3:10 - 3:13She gets on a train to the capital.
-
3:13 - 3:14OK, so you get the idea.
-
3:14 - 3:17What do you have in common
with Harry Potter, -
3:17 - 3:18Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo?
-
3:19 - 3:21Well, you're human, just like them.
-
3:22 - 3:25The Hero's Journey myth
exists in all human cultures -
3:25 - 3:27and keeps getting updated,
-
3:27 - 3:29because we humans reflect on our world
-
3:29 - 3:32through symbolic stories of our own lives.
-
3:33 - 3:35You leave your comfort zone,
-
3:35 - 3:38have an experience that transforms you,
-
3:38 - 3:39and then you recover and do it again.
-
3:40 - 3:43You don't literally slay
dragons or fight Voldemort, -
3:43 - 3:46but you face problems just as scary.
-
3:46 - 3:47Joseph Campbell said,
-
3:47 - 3:51"In the cave you fear to enter
lies the treasure you seek." -
3:52 - 3:55What is the symbolic
cave you fear to enter? -
3:55 - 3:57Auditions for the school play?
-
3:58 - 3:59Baseball tryouts?
-
3:59 - 4:01Love?
-
4:01 - 4:05Watch for this formula in books,
movies, and TV shows you come across. -
4:05 - 4:06You will certainly see it again.
-
4:06 - 4:09But also be sensitive
to it in your own life. -
4:10 - 4:11Listen for your call to adventure.
-
4:12 - 4:14Accept the challenge.
-
4:14 - 4:16Conquer your fear
and claim the treasure you seek. -
4:17 - 4:19And then,
-
4:19 - 4:20do it all over again.
