Standing alone | Katherine De Jesus | TEDxDoralAcademyPrep

  • 0:13 - 0:15
If you know me, you know my sister.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
Many of you may actually be expecting her
to walk in at any moment
  • 0:18 - 0:21
to give this speech alongside me.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    Because we're twins, right?
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    We do everything together.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Womb to the tomb.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
I hate to break it to you all,
but tonight, I stand here alone.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    I know, surprising -
  • 0:31 - 0:32
the twins are doing something separate,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
but, yes, I stand here alone.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
Now, with this, many of you
    may be questioning why.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    Why, Kat, have you decided
    to be up here alone?
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Well, as a twin,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
uniqueness is something I can honestly say
    I've always struggled with.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    Many failed to identify
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    not only the physical differences
    between my sister and I
  • 0:50 - 0:52
but our personality differences as well.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Yeah, I know in my heart
    that we are different.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
And I stand here alone tonight
to prove that not only to you all
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    but to myself.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Because as much as I
can stand here and ramble on
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    about the idea that we're
    two separate, unique individuals,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
I still struggle to figure out
    what exactly makes us so.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
To much of my own surprise,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    when people ask me,
    "What's different about you guys?"
  • 1:11 - 1:13
I have a hard time finding a valid answer.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
We just like so many of the same things.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
We talk about the same things,
    hate the same things,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
are passionate about the same things,
    do the same things.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    We just make sure
not to wear the same things.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    And I can assure you
    it's pure coincidence:
  • 1:25 - 1:27
we don't strive to be the same.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    It literally just happens.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
So the least I can do
    is cut my hair short.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    Shorter than hers, that is.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
My shorter hair makes me feel,
    well, different, unique.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
It reminds me that I am my own person,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    that I'm the rebellious one,
    the risk-taker,
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    the daredevil who tries
    not to think too much,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    the crybaby, the clumsy one,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
the one that all too often
puts her foot in her mouth.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
My shorter hair is a physical reminder
    that I am indeed different,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
that I am my own person,
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    that I am one-in-a-million,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
not one in a pair, not a part of a unit,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
but I am just Katherine De Jesus.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    Just Kat, just me.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
My sister and I are always being compared.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
And as twins, I understand why that is.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
But I still await the day
  • 2:11 - 2:15
where my test scores and accomplishments
aren't compared to those of my sister.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
I await the day where it's not always
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    "You got 2 points higher
    than your sister" -
  • 2:19 - 2:21
"two points less," "two points more."
  • 2:21 - 2:25
I await the day where I am
compared to who I used to be.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
Excuse me if I sound a little bit selfish,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    but I await the day
where the weight of my achievements
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    aren't measured
according to those of my sister.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    Competition is basically nonexistent
    between my sister and I.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
I am extremely proud of what she's done,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
and I know she is proud of what I've done.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    But I don't care whether
    I'm better than my sister.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
I want to know if I'm better
than the person who I was yesterday
  • 2:45 - 2:49
because as an individual, which I am,
    I aim to improve myself.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
Nonetheless, I think I've always stood
by my sister because it's easier that way.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
It's easier to have my best friend,
my womb mate, always there for me,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
always there to help me make decisions,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
there to help me pick out
what to wear, what to buy,
  • 3:02 - 3:03
what to order at a restaurant.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    It's even easier to start conversations;
we don't have to say anything.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
People just go on up to us, be like,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    "Oh my god, you're twins.
    What's that like?"
  • 3:10 - 3:12
And the conversation goes from there.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
It's easier, far easier than being alone.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
The fear of being alone: it's mortifying.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
But it isn't until we're alone
    that we grow up,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
that we learn just how strong we are,
    just how capable we are,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
just how comfortable we can get
    with the uncomfortable.
  • 3:28 - 3:33
I have loved every single moment,
every memory, every award, every title,
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    every laugh, every cry
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    I've been given the privilege
    to share with my sister.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
But now I am ready to begin
a new chapter, a new book.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
I am eager to start making a name
    for myself, to distinguish myself.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    I'm eager to see
that it is my story that I tell,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
and I sure do pray it's a good one.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
Of course, that begs the question,
  • 3:52 - 3:56
what story does Katherine De Jesus -
not Kimberly and Katherine - want to tell?
  • 3:56 - 3:59
What story do you - not your parents,
not your friends, not your teachers -
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    want to tell?
  • 4:00 - 4:04
We will never have the answer
to this question until we stand alone,
  • 4:04 - 4:08
until we listen to our own voices,
our own brains, our own hearts,
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    our own guts.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
I hate to be cliche and cheesy and all,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    but I couldn't think
of any other quote more fitting
  • 4:13 - 4:15
to explain what I'm trying to say.
  • 4:15 - 4:19
When writing the story of your life,
remember that it is you who holds the pen
  • 4:19 - 4:23
or the pencil or the crayon
or the highlighter or the Sharpie -
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    whatever you prefer.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
Because the one thing you'll always have
that nobody else does is you,
  • 4:28 - 4:31
your heart, your soul, your essence.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
Those things are yours and only yours.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
They form who you are, your identity.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
So, who are you? Who am I?
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    I didn't realize how difficult
    this question would be
  • 4:42 - 4:44
until I tried answering it myself.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    So, who am I?
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    Yes, I am a twin,
but I am more than just that.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    I am Katherine De Jesus.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    I'm a Black Hispanic female,
    first-generation American.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    I'm an artist, a filmmaker.
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    I am a hardcore, BuzzFeed,
    anything-superhero enthusiast.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
I'm an absolute dork, a bookworm.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    I'm many things,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    but more than anything,
    I'm really just me,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    me being a girl
who just wants to be happy,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
who wants to do what she loves.
  • 5:11 - 5:15
I'm just a girl with the hunger
to excel, to learn, to grow.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
    I'm a girl who desires
    something different, something good,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    something my heart told me
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    I would start finding
    in standing here alone.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    Thank you.

Hello, the reviewer and I discussed possible revisions that weren't included:

1:07 - 'I still struggle to figure out what exactly makes us so.'

    3:50 - "I sure do pray it's a good one.' or 'I assure to pray it's a good one.'

Should the original subtitles be retained or changed into the revisions above? Thanks!

  • Thank you Maureen Bautista for doing this.
