Standing alone | Katherine De Jesus | TEDxDoralAcademyPrep
-
0:13 - 0:15If you know me, you know my sister.
-
0:15 - 0:18Many of you may actually be expecting her
to walk in at any moment -
0:18 - 0:21to give this speech alongside me.
-
0:21 - 0:22Because we're twins, right?
-
0:22 - 0:24We do everything together.
-
0:24 - 0:26Womb to the tomb.
-
0:26 - 0:29I hate to break it to you all,
but tonight, I stand here alone. -
0:29 - 0:31I know, surprising -
-
0:31 - 0:32the twins are doing something separate,
-
0:32 - 0:34but, yes, I stand here alone.
-
0:34 - 0:37Now, with this, many of you
may be questioning why. -
0:37 - 0:41Why, Kat, have you decided
to be up here alone? -
0:41 - 0:43Well, as a twin,
-
0:43 - 0:46uniqueness is something I can honestly say
I've always struggled with. -
0:46 - 0:47Many failed to identify
-
0:47 - 0:50not only the physical differences
between my sister and I -
0:50 - 0:52but our personality differences as well.
-
0:52 - 0:55Yeah, I know in my heart
that we are different. -
0:55 - 0:58And I stand here alone tonight
to prove that not only to you all -
0:58 - 0:59but to myself.
-
0:59 - 1:01Because as much as I
can stand here and ramble on -
1:01 - 1:04about the idea that we're
two separate, unique individuals, -
1:04 - 1:07I still struggle to figure out
what exactly makes us so. -
1:07 - 1:09To much of my own surprise,
-
1:09 - 1:11when people ask me,
"What's different about you guys?" -
1:11 - 1:13I have a hard time finding a valid answer.
-
1:13 - 1:16We just like so many of the same things.
-
1:16 - 1:18We talk about the same things,
hate the same things, -
1:18 - 1:21are passionate about the same things,
do the same things. -
1:21 - 1:23We just make sure
not to wear the same things. -
1:23 - 1:25And I can assure you
it's pure coincidence: -
1:25 - 1:27we don't strive to be the same.
-
1:27 - 1:29It literally just happens.
-
1:29 - 1:32So the least I can do
is cut my hair short. -
1:32 - 1:34Shorter than hers, that is.
-
1:34 - 1:37My shorter hair makes me feel,
well, different, unique. -
1:37 - 1:40It reminds me that I am my own person,
-
1:40 - 1:43that I'm the rebellious one,
the risk-taker, -
1:43 - 1:45the daredevil who tries
not to think too much, -
1:45 - 1:47the crybaby, the clumsy one,
-
1:47 - 1:50the one that all too often
puts her foot in her mouth. -
1:50 - 1:53My shorter hair is a physical reminder
that I am indeed different, -
1:53 - 1:55that I am my own person,
-
1:55 - 1:56that I am one-in-a-million,
-
1:56 - 1:59not one in a pair, not a part of a unit,
-
1:59 - 2:02but I am just Katherine De Jesus.
-
2:02 - 2:03Just Kat, just me.
-
2:04 - 2:06My sister and I are always being compared.
-
2:06 - 2:09And as twins, I understand why that is.
-
2:09 - 2:11But I still await the day
-
2:11 - 2:15where my test scores and accomplishments
aren't compared to those of my sister. -
2:15 - 2:17I await the day where it's not always
-
2:17 - 2:19"You got 2 points higher
than your sister" - -
2:19 - 2:21"two points less," "two points more."
-
2:21 - 2:25I await the day where I am
compared to who I used to be. -
2:25 - 2:27Excuse me if I sound a little bit selfish,
-
2:27 - 2:29but I await the day
where the weight of my achievements -
2:29 - 2:32aren't measured
according to those of my sister. -
2:32 - 2:35Competition is basically nonexistent
between my sister and I. -
2:35 - 2:37I am extremely proud of what she's done,
-
2:37 - 2:39and I know she is proud of what I've done.
-
2:39 - 2:42But I don't care whether
I'm better than my sister. -
2:42 - 2:45I want to know if I'm better
than the person who I was yesterday -
2:45 - 2:49because as an individual, which I am,
I aim to improve myself. -
2:50 - 2:54Nonetheless, I think I've always stood
by my sister because it's easier that way. -
2:54 - 2:57It's easier to have my best friend,
my womb mate, always there for me, -
2:57 - 2:59always there to help me make decisions,
-
2:59 - 3:02there to help me pick out
what to wear, what to buy, -
3:02 - 3:03what to order at a restaurant.
-
3:03 - 3:06It's even easier to start conversations;
we don't have to say anything. -
3:06 - 3:08People just go on up to us, be like,
-
3:08 - 3:10"Oh my god, you're twins.
What's that like?" -
3:10 - 3:12And the conversation goes from there.
-
3:12 - 3:15It's easier, far easier than being alone.
-
3:15 - 3:18The fear of being alone: it's mortifying.
-
3:18 - 3:21But it isn't until we're alone
that we grow up, -
3:21 - 3:25that we learn just how strong we are,
just how capable we are, -
3:25 - 3:28just how comfortable we can get
with the uncomfortable. -
3:28 - 3:33I have loved every single moment,
every memory, every award, every title, -
3:33 - 3:34every laugh, every cry
-
3:34 - 3:37I've been given the privilege
to share with my sister. -
3:37 - 3:41But now I am ready to begin
a new chapter, a new book. -
3:41 - 3:45I am eager to start making a name
for myself, to distinguish myself. -
3:45 - 3:48I'm eager to see
that it is my story that I tell, -
3:48 - 3:50and I sure do pray it's a good one.
-
3:50 - 3:52Of course, that begs the question,
-
3:52 - 3:56what story does Katherine De Jesus -
not Kimberly and Katherine - want to tell? -
3:56 - 3:59What story do you - not your parents,
not your friends, not your teachers - -
3:59 - 4:00want to tell?
-
4:00 - 4:04We will never have the answer
to this question until we stand alone, -
4:04 - 4:08until we listen to our own voices,
our own brains, our own hearts, -
4:08 - 4:09our own guts.
-
4:09 - 4:11I hate to be cliche and cheesy and all,
-
4:11 - 4:13but I couldn't think
of any other quote more fitting -
4:13 - 4:15to explain what I'm trying to say.
-
4:15 - 4:19When writing the story of your life,
remember that it is you who holds the pen -
4:19 - 4:23or the pencil or the crayon
or the highlighter or the Sharpie - -
4:23 - 4:24whatever you prefer.
-
4:24 - 4:28Because the one thing you'll always have
that nobody else does is you, -
4:28 - 4:31your heart, your soul, your essence.
-
4:31 - 4:33Those things are yours and only yours.
-
4:33 - 4:37They form who you are, your identity.
-
4:37 - 4:39So, who are you? Who am I?
-
4:39 - 4:42I didn't realize how difficult
this question would be -
4:42 - 4:44until I tried answering it myself.
-
4:44 - 4:45So, who am I?
-
4:45 - 4:48Yes, I am a twin,
but I am more than just that. -
4:48 - 4:50I am Katherine De Jesus.
-
4:50 - 4:53I'm a Black Hispanic female,
first-generation American. -
4:53 - 4:56I'm an artist, a filmmaker.
-
4:56 - 5:00I am a hardcore, BuzzFeed,
anything-superhero enthusiast. -
5:00 - 5:03I'm an absolute dork, a bookworm.
-
5:03 - 5:04I'm many things,
-
5:04 - 5:07but more than anything,
I'm really just me, -
5:07 - 5:09me being a girl
who just wants to be happy, -
5:09 - 5:11who wants to do what she loves.
-
5:11 - 5:15I'm just a girl with the hunger
to excel, to learn, to grow. -
5:15 - 5:19I'm a girl who desires
something different, something good, -
5:19 - 5:21something my heart told me
-
5:21 - 5:24I would start finding
in standing here alone. -
5:24 - 5:26Thank you.

For approval of TED Language Coordinator or staff member for English Subtitles:
Hello, the reviewer and I discussed possible revisions that weren't included:
1:07 - 'I still struggle to figure out what exactly makes us so.'
3:50 - "I sure do pray it's a good one.' or 'I assure to pray it's a good one.'
Should the original subtitles be retained or changed into the revisions above? Thanks!
Hiroko Kawano
Thank you Maureen Bautista for doing this.
