-
0:00 - 0:07[Classical music]
-
0:07 - 0:08HOST: Yo, what it is?
-
0:08 - 0:10Sparky Sweets again.
-
0:10 - 0:14And this week we reppin' down South with
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. -
0:14 - 0:17[Classical music]
-
0:17 - 0:22This book focuses on three little homies
by the name of Scout, her crippled brother Jem, -
0:22 - 0:25and some homeboy by the name of Dill.
-
0:25 - 0:29Now, Scout's papa is a righteous lawyer
with the badass name of Atticus. -
0:29 - 0:31Since there ain't nothing to do in Alabama,
-
0:31 - 0:36Scout and her crew spend a summer
harassin' a nearby shut-in named Boo Radley. -
0:36 - 0:39Now, ain't nobody seen Boo Radley for years.
-
0:39 - 0:43Scout and her crew try to pass Boo
a note to see if he wants to chill, -
0:43 - 0:47but Atticus gets all crump,
and tell dem' kids to, "Leave a brother be." -
0:47 - 0:50Next day, some little punk steps to Scout...
-
0:50 - 0:53...and straight up calls Scout's daddy, Atticus, a "Nigger Lover."
-
0:53 - 0:54Mmmm!
-
0:54 - 0:59Turns out, Atticus has been hired to defend
some ashy playa' named Tom Robinson, -
0:59 - 1:04who has been accused of raping
the daughter of a shady cat named Bob Ewell. -
1:04 - 1:08At the trial, my boy Atticus spits
mad game up in that court room. -
1:08 - 1:13In fact, he discover it was Ewell's daughter
that was puttin' the moves on Tom. -
1:13 - 1:16Turns out she wanted some of that
"dark chocolate", know what I mean? -
1:16 - 1:19After seeing his daughter
makin' advances on a brotha', -
1:19 - 1:23Mr. Ewell smack that bitch up raw,
while Tom peaced out. -
1:23 - 1:27But since we talkin' about Alabama here,
them white folks convict him anyway. -
1:27 - 1:28Why?
-
1:28 - 1:29Cuz' he black.
-
1:30 - 1:33That honky Ewell be pissed that Atticus
made him look like a fool up in court, -
1:33 - 1:39so Halloween night, Ewell downs too much of
that juice and gets the drop on Jem and Scout. -
1:39 - 1:45Just when he about to rough up my girl, Scout, crazy cracka' Boo Radley comes in outta nowhere,
-
1:45 - 1:47and shivs that fool. Whoo!
-
1:47 - 1:49He dead.
-
1:49 - 1:50Sick and tired of his stupid lip,
-
1:50 - 1:55the town authorities decide that Ewell
got too drunk and fell on his knife. -
1:55 - 1:57Boo gets off scot free.
-
1:57 - 1:58Why?
-
1:58 - 2:02Cuz' icing him, like my girl Scout says,
would be like "Shootin' a mockingbird." -
2:03 - 2:07[Classical music]
-
2:07 - 2:11Now, you all don't know sh*t about this title
until you read this here quote on page 90: -
2:17 - 2:20Only a jive-assed fool would
blow out a cap in a mockingbird, -
2:21 - 2:24cuz' all dem bitches do is just drop
max level beats for your enjoyment. -
2:24 - 2:29So what my girl, Harper, tryin' to say is that
rattin' on Boo Radley wouldn't do no good. -
2:29 - 2:32It'd only rid the hood of one more true blue playa'.
-
2:32 - 2:35They already done f*cked up once by convictin' Tom,
-
2:35 - 2:38so they ain't bout to pop another mockin' bird.
-
2:38 - 2:42Now this book right here is a straight up
criticism of the South during The Depression. -
2:42 - 2:47The courts, the schools, the church:
all of them were run by crooked ass crackas. -
2:47 - 2:52Now when we first meet Scout, she's sportin'
all that Southern racism and ignorance. -
2:52 - 2:57But after kickin' it with Boo and Tom Rob,
she matures and starts keepin' it real. -
2:57 - 3:00Dis' brings me to one of the essential
themes of this bitch: -
3:01 - 3:05learning valuable lessons by being
exposed to people of difference. -
3:05 - 3:09By hangin' with a crazy cracka' like Boo Radley
and a righteous black man like T. Robinson, -
3:09 - 3:13Scout has one of them
paradigm shiftin' moments, playa! -
3:13 - 3:17She learns that these homies
just be tryin' to hustle like anybody else. -
3:17 - 3:18Yo! Check it.
-
3:18 - 3:22Jem's crippled ass is a metaphor
for America's jacked up justice system. -
3:22 - 3:26Jem f*ckin' up his arm so young
be one of them selected keys -
3:26 - 3:28for a country that was born with backward ass ideals.
-
3:29 - 3:33Now, that sh*t might heal, but it gonna leave
a disabling scar on the nation -
3:33 - 3:37and ain't no amount of cocoa butter
gonna make that sh*t go away. -
3:37 - 3:40Yo! Thanks for watchin' Thug Notes.
-
3:40 - 3:42Tune in next week, playa.
-
3:42 - 3:45[slow classical music]
