The Egyptian myth of the death of Osiris - Alex Gendler
-
0:07 - 0:11It was a feast like Egypt
had never seen before. -
0:11 - 0:14The warrior god Set and his wife,
the goddess Nephtys, -
0:14 - 0:17decorated an extravagant hall
for the occasion, -
0:17 - 0:20with a beautiful wooden chest
as the centerpiece. -
0:20 - 0:25They invited all the most important gods,
dozens of lesser deities, -
0:25 - 0:27and foreign monarchs.
-
0:27 - 0:33But no one caused as big a stir as Set
and Nephtys’s older brother Osiris, -
0:33 - 0:38the god who ruled all of Egypt
and had brought prosperity to everyone. -
0:38 - 0:40Set announced a game—
-
0:40 - 0:44whoever could fit perfectly in the chest
could have it as a gift. -
0:44 - 0:48One by one, the guests clambered in,
but no one fit. -
0:48 - 0:50Finally, it was Osiris’s turn.
-
0:50 - 0:54As he lay down, everyone could see
it was a perfect fit— -
0:54 - 0:57another win for the god
who could do no wrong. -
0:57 - 1:03Then Set slammed the lid down
with Osiris still inside, sealed it shut, -
1:03 - 1:06and tossed it into the Nile.
-
1:06 - 1:08The chest was a coffin.
-
1:08 - 1:11Set had constructed it specifically
to trap his brother -
1:11 - 1:14and planned the party to lure him into it.
-
1:14 - 1:18Set had long been jealous
of his brother’s successful reign, -
1:18 - 1:22and hoped to replace
him as the ruler of all Egypt. -
1:22 - 1:26The Nile bore the coffin out to sea
and it drifted for many days -
1:26 - 1:31before washing ashore near Byblos,
where a great cedar grew around it. -
1:31 - 1:35The essence of the god within
gave the tree a divine aura, -
1:35 - 1:37and when the king of Byblos noticed it,
-
1:37 - 1:41he ordered the tree cut down
and brought to his palace. -
1:41 - 1:42Unbeknownst to him,
-
1:42 - 1:47the coffin containing Egypt’s
most powerful god was still inside. -
1:47 - 1:51Set’s victory seemed complete,
but he hadn’t counted on his sisters. -
1:51 - 1:54Set’s wife Nephtys was also his sister,
-
1:54 - 1:57while their other sister,
the goddess Isis, -
1:57 - 1:59was married to their brother Osiris.
-
1:59 - 2:02Isis was determined to find Osiris,
-
2:02 - 2:06and enlisted Nephtys’s help
behind Set’s back. -
2:06 - 2:11The two sisters took the shape
of falcons and travelled far and wide. -
2:11 - 2:14Some children who had seen
the coffin float by -
2:14 - 2:16pointed them to the palace of Byblos.
-
2:16 - 2:20Isis adopted a new disguise
and approached the palace. -
2:20 - 2:23The queen was so charmed
by the disguised goddess -
2:23 - 2:27that she entrusted her
with nursing the baby prince. -
2:27 - 2:31Isis decided to make the child immortal
by bathing him in flame. -
2:31 - 2:34When the horrified queen
came upon this scene, -
2:34 - 2:38Isis revealed herself
and demanded the tree. -
2:38 - 2:42When she cut the coffin from the trunk
and opened it, -
2:42 - 2:44Osiris was dead inside.
-
2:44 - 2:48Weeping, she carried his body
back to Egypt and hid it in a swamp, -
2:48 - 2:52while she set off in search
of a means of resurrecting him. -
2:52 - 2:53But while she was gone,
-
2:53 - 2:57Set found the body
and cut into many pieces, -
2:57 - 2:59scattering them throughout Egypt.
-
2:59 - 3:04Isis had lost Osiris for the second time,
but she did not give up. -
3:04 - 3:09She searched all over the land,
traveling in a boat of papyrus. -
3:09 - 3:11One by one, she tracked down
the parts -
3:11 - 3:15of her husband’s dismembered body
in every province of Egypt, -
3:15 - 3:18holding a funeral for each piece.
-
3:18 - 3:22At long last, she had recovered
every piece but one— -
3:22 - 3:27his penis,
which a fish in the Nile had eaten. -
3:27 - 3:31Working with what she had, Isis
reconstructed and revived her husband. -
3:31 - 3:35But without his penis,
Osiris was incomplete. -
3:35 - 3:37He could not remain among the living,
-
3:37 - 3:41could not return to his old position
as ruler of Egypt. -
3:41 - 3:45Instead, he would have to rule over Duat,
the realm of the dead. -
3:45 - 3:52Before he went, though, he and Isis
conceived a son to bear Osiris’s legacy— -
3:52 - 3:54and one day, avenge him.
