Speakout Pre-intermediate Video Podcast Unit 6 Fitness

  • 0:16 - 0:18
Often it’s hard to find the time to exercise
  • 0:18 - 0:20
when you have a full-time job.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
Lots of my friends belong to gyms,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
but I prefer to go running outside to keep fit.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
How about you? What do you do to keep fit?
  • 0:30 - 0:34

I do quite a few things actually. I go to the gym quite regularly,
  • 0:35 - 0:41
I go for runs, I’m also a little bit involved in the sport of rowing so I’m down there quite a bit,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
I actually coach rowing as well.
  • 0:43 - 0:46

I have three children and I work full-time
  • 0:46 - 0:47
and I don’t have a lot of time
  • 0:47 - 0:51
to do any extra organised exercise.
  • 0:51 - 0:54

The main thing I do is I practice yoga
  • 0:54 - 0:58
so that incorporates different positions as well as meditation
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    and different breathing techniques.
  • 1:00 - 1:02

Usually I ride my bike like I’ve got here
  • 1:02 - 1:06
and I go to the gym more or less three to four times a week
  • 1:06 - 1:09
and I also watch what I eat.
  • 1:09 - 1:15

I dance and I do yoga and I just try to be as active as possible,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    enjoy nature also.
  • 1:16 - 1:21

I try and walk everywhere because I don’t really enjoy running.
  • 1:21 - 1:24

I have quite a hectic lifestyle as a musician,
  • 1:24 - 1:28
but I do try to keep fit, go to the gym, yoga classes,
  • 1:28 - 1:32
Pilates classes, sometimes running and generally keeping active.
  • 1:32 - 1:35

I’m a police officer, so I have quite an active job,
  • 1:35 - 1:40
I can spend eight to twelve hours doing foot patrol and walking round the streets of London,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
so I suppose that keeps me quite fit
  • 1:44 - 1:47

What other things would you like to do to keep fit?
  • 1:47 - 1:50

I’d love to get involved in some team sports,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
I really enjoy sort of the team aspect of sport, particularly,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
think I’d like to get into hockey.
  • 1:55 - 1:58

I’d quite like to learn how to play tennis properly.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
it’s probably one of the only sports that I’m interested in,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
it’s something I’d watch on TV.
  • 2:04 - 2:09

I’d like to run, but my legs are not running legs, so I prefer to cycle.
  • 2:09 - 2:11

I would like to learn to rock climb.
  • 2:11 - 2:14

I’d actually like to join a rowing club but unfortunately
  • 2:14 - 2:16
I don’t really have the time and it is a little bit expensive.
  • 2:16 - 2:19

Really enjoy getting out of London for the weekend and going sailing.
  • 2:19 - 2:22

When I was at university I got quite into swing dancing,
  • 2:22 - 2:26
which is very much like jive, 1940s jazz dancing.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
I’d quite like to take that up again because
  • 2:28 - 2:32
it’s an easy way of keeping fit and you meet a lot of people.
  • 2:33 - 2:37

Do you do anything that isn’t very healthy?
  • 2:37 - 2:39

I have a bit of a sweet tooth,
  • 2:39 - 2:44
I love desserts and I love to eat sweet things.
  • 2:44 - 2:47

I definitely drink too much coffee and I do like chocolate as well.
  • 2:47 - 2:52

Eating late is really bad for you so I try and avoid that as much as I can,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
although, it does happen quite regularly.
  • 2:54 - 2:58

I love chocolate and I probably eat too much of it.
  • 2:58 - 3:01

Because of my shift work I eat a lot of fast food,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
especially in the early hours of the morning.
  • 3:03 - 3:09

    Gosh, I don’t know, I’m a vegetarian, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink caffeine.
  • 3:09 - 3:20

I eat far too many crisps and chocolate and biscuits and because I bake I also eat a lot of cake.
