Imagine | Refugee Week 2020

  • 0:02 - 0:05
    [This Refugee Week]
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    [We're inviting you
    to imagine a different world.]
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    Himesh: Imagine a world
    in which compassion for others
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    isn't just a choice,
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    but an obligation.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
Waad: I imagine a world very different
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    from where my both daughters
    were born into.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    I dream of hope,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    of dignity, peace, and justice.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
Gary: I imagine a world without borders
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    without border guards,
    without barbed wire,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    without Alsatian dogs,
  • 0:32 - 0:37
a place where people can live
and love and roam and work,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    wherever they see fit.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    Shrouk: Imagine a country
  • 0:40 - 0:43
where nobody is denied access to education
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    just because they fled persecution.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Ryad: I imagine a future
  • 0:48 - 0:51
where refugees and locals come together
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    to look after their environment,
  • 0:53 - 0:58
    and where we build community
by learning and making things together.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    Taban: I imagine a world
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    where women and girls realize
that their superpower lies within them,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
that they can make the change
    and be the change,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    not only for themselves,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
but for the wider community around them.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
Nyaruach: If I could change one thing,
I would want there to be more love
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    because love creates peace,
  • 1:20 - 1:24
and it would stop us been forced
to run away from our countries.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Siobhán: I can imagine a world
  • 1:26 - 1:30
    where through education,
the ballot box and our own actions,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    we encourage leaders
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    who value each individual life
    regardless of geography.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
    Himesh: Before self-preservation,
    before the pursuit of wealth,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
or pursuit of this intangible thing
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    that we call success,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    what if rule number one
  • 1:53 - 1:54
was to be kind to each other
  • 1:57 - 1:58
no matter the distance between us?
  • 1:58 - 2:01
Onjali: It's quite an amazing thing
    that our imaginings can do
  • 2:02 - 2:04
and amazing places they can take us
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    So come join me,
  • 2:06 - 2:07
and see what that world might be like.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    [Imagine]
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    [Refugee Week]
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    [A Virtual Festival - 15-21 June 2020]
Title:
Imagine | Refugee Week 2020
Description:

This Refugee Week (15 – 21 June 2020), we’re inviting you to explore the theme of ‘Imagine’. Because when things feel stuck; when the old ways of doing things are no longer working, that’s what we need to do.

Featuring:
Himesh Patel
Waad Al-Kateab
Gary Younge
Taban Shoresh
Ryad Alsous
Onjali Q. Rauf
Siobhán McSweeney
Nyaruach
Shrouk El-Attar

We commissioned renowned portrait photographer Pål Hansen to produce a series of portrait photographs on the Refugee Week 2020 theme of ‘Imagine’. The final portraits and an accompanying video have been combined with graphic design by London-based design agency BCMH.
