How to transform sinking cities into landscapes that fight floods

  • Not Synced
    At this very moment,
  • Not Synced
    with every breath we take,
  • Not Synced
    major ... cities
    across the globe are sinking,
  • Not Synced
    including New York, London,
    Tokyo, Shanghai,
  • Not Synced
    New Orleans,
  • Not Synced
and as well as my city, Bangkok.
  • Not Synced
    Here is the usual version
    of climate change.
  • Not Synced
    This is mine.
  • Not Synced
    Nothing much,
  • Not Synced
just a crocodile on the street.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    This is an urgent impact
    of climate change:
  • Not Synced
    our sinking cities.
  • Not Synced
Here you can see urbanization of Bangkok,
  • Not Synced
    growing in every direction.
  • Not Synced
    Shifting from porous,
    agricultural land --
  • Not Synced
    the land that can breathe
    and absord water,
  • Not Synced
    to a concrete jungle.
  • Not Synced
This is what parts of it look like
    after 30 minutes of rainfall.
  • Not Synced
    And every time it rains,
  • Not Synced
I wish my car could turn into a boat.
  • Not Synced
This land has no room for water.
  • Not Synced
It has lost its absorbent capacity.
  • Not Synced
The reality of Bangkok metropolitan region
is a city of 15 million people
  • Not Synced
living, working and commuting on top
    of shifting, muddy river delta.
  • Not Synced
    Bangkok is sinking more
    than one centimeter per year.
  • Not Synced
    Which is four times faster
than the rate predicted at sea level rise,
  • Not Synced
and we could be below sea level by 2030,
  • Not Synced
which will be here too soon.
  • Not Synced
There is no coincidence that I am here
    as a landscape architect.
  • Not Synced
    As a child,
  • Not Synced
I grew up in a rowhouse
  • Not Synced
    next to the busy road
    always filled with traffic.
  • Not Synced
    In front of my house,
  • Not Synced
there was a concrete parking lot,
  • Not Synced
    and that was my playground.
  • Not Synced
The only living creature I would find,
  • Not Synced
    and had fun with,
  • Not Synced
    were these sneaky little plants
    trying grow through the crack
  • Not Synced
    of the concrete pavement.
  • Not Synced
    My favorite games with friends
  • Not Synced
was to dig the bigger and bigger hole
    through this crack
  • Not Synced
to let this little plant creep out --
  • Not Synced
    sneak out more and more.
  • Not Synced
    And yes, landscape archtitecture
    gives me the opportunity
  • Not Synced
to continue my cracking ambition --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    to connect this concrete land
    back to nature.
  • Not Synced
    Before Thais --
  • Not Synced
    my people --
  • Not Synced
we were adapted to the cycle
of the wet and dry season,
  • Not Synced
and you could all us amphibious.
  • Not Synced
We lived both on land and on water.
  • Not Synced
    We were adapted to both.
  • Not Synced
And flooding was a happy event
when the water fertilized our land.
  • Not Synced
    But now flooding means disaster.
  • Not Synced
    2011, Thailand was hit
    by the most damaging
  • Not Synced
    and most expensive flood disaster
    in our history.
  • Not Synced
    Flooding as turned central Thailand
    into an enormous lake.
  • Not Synced
Here you can see the scale of the flood
in the center of the image
  • Not Synced
    to the scale of Bangkok
    outlined in yellow.
  • Not Synced
The water was overflowing from the north,
  • Not Synced
making its away across several provinces.
  • Not Synced
    Millions of my people,
  • Not Synced
    including me and my family,
  • Not Synced
    were displaced and homeless.
  • Not Synced
Some had to escape the city.
  • Not Synced
    Many were terrified of losing
    their home and their belongings,
  • Not Synced
so they stayed back in the flood
with no electricity and clean water.
  • Not Synced
For me, this flood reflects clearly
    that our modern infastructure --
  • Not Synced
    and especially our notion
    of fighting flood with concrete
  • Not Synced
had made us so extremely vulnerable
    to the climate uncertainty.
  • Not Synced
But in the heart of this disaster,
  • Not Synced
    I found my calling.
  • Not Synced
I cannot just sit and wait
as my city continues to sink.
  • Not Synced
    The city needed me,
  • Not Synced
    and I have the ability
    to fix this problem.
  • Not Synced
    Six years ago,
  • Not Synced
    I started my project.
  • Not Synced
My teams and I won the design competition
    for Chulalongkorn Centennial Park.
  • Not Synced
This was the big, bold mission
of the first university in Thailand
  • Not Synced
    for celebrating its hundredth anniversary
  • Not Synced
by giving this piece of land
as a public park to our city.
  • Not Synced
Having a park sounds very normal
    to many other cities,
  • Not Synced
    but not in Bangkok,
  • Not Synced
which has one of the lowest
    public green space per capita
  • Not Synced
    among megacities in Asia.
  • Not Synced
    Our project's become the first
new public park in almsot 30 years.
  • Not Synced
    The 11-acre park,
  • Not Synced
a big green crack at the heart of Bangkok,
  • Not Synced
    opened just last year.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    For four years,
  • Not Synced
we have pushed through countless meetings
  • Not Synced
    to convince and never
    giving up to convince
  • Not Synced
    that this park isn't just
    for beautification or recreation;
  • Not Synced
    it must help the city deal with water;
  • Not Synced
    it must help the city
    confront climate change.
  • Not Synced
And here is how it works.
  • Not Synced
    Bangkok is a flat city,
  • Not Synced
so we harnessed the power of gravity
    by inclining the whole park
  • Not Synced
to collect every drop of rain.
  • Not Synced
    The gravity force pulls down
the runoff from the highest point
  • Not Synced
    to the lowest point.
  • Not Synced
This park has three main elements
    that work as one system.
  • Not Synced
    The first, the green roof.
  • Not Synced
This is the biggest green roof
    in Thailand,
  • Not Synced
    with the rainwater tanks
    and museum underneath.
  • Not Synced
    In the dry season,
  • Not Synced
the collected rain can be used
to water the park up to a month.
  • Not Synced
The runoff on the green roof
    then fall through wetlands
  • Not Synced
    with the native water plants
    that can help filter
  • Not Synced
    and help clean water.
  • Not Synced
    And at the lower end,
  • Not Synced
    the retention pond collects
    all of the water.
  • Not Synced
At this pond, there are water bikes.
  • Not Synced
People can pedal and help clean water.
  • Not Synced
Their exercise becomes an active part
    of the park water system.
  • Not Synced
    When life gives you flood,
  • Not Synced
you have fun with the water.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Centennial Park gives room for people
    and room for water,
  • Not Synced
    which is exactly
what we in our cities need.
  • Not Synced
    This is an amphibious design.
  • Not Synced
    This park is not
    about getting rid of flood.
  • Not Synced
It's about creating a way to live with it.
  • Not Synced
And not a single drop of rain
    is wasted in this park.
  • Not Synced
This park can hold and collect
    a million gallons of water.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Every given project, for me,
    is an opportunity
  • Not Synced
    to create more green cracks
    through this concrete jungle.
  • Not Synced
By using landscape architeture as solution,
  • Not Synced
    like turning this concrete roof
    to an urban farm,
  • Not Synced
    which can help absorb rain,
  • Not Synced
    reduce urban heat [...],
  • Not Synced
and grow food in the middle of the city.
  • Not Synced
    Reuse the abandoned concrete structure
to become a green pedestrian bridge.
  • Not Synced
    And another flood proof park
    at .. ... University,
  • Not Synced
    which nearly completes the biggest
green roof on an academic campus yet
  • Not Synced
    in Southeast Asia.
  • Not Synced
Severe flooding is our new normal.
  • Not Synced
    Putting Southeast Asian region,
  • Not Synced
the region with the most coastline,
  • Not Synced
    at extreme risk.
  • Not Synced
Creating a park is just one solution.
  • Not Synced
    The awareness of climate change
    mean we --
  • Not Synced
in every profession were are involved in,
  • Not Synced
    are increasingly obligated
    to understand the climate risk
  • Not Synced
and put whatever we are working on
    as part of the solution.
  • Not Synced
    Because if our cities continue
    the way they are now,
  • Not Synced
a similar catastrophe will happen again
  • Not Synced
    and again.
  • Not Synced
    Creating a solution
    in these sinking cities
  • Not Synced
    is like making impossible possible,
  • Not Synced
    and for that,
  • Not Synced
I would liek to share one word
that I always keep in mind.
  • Not Synced
    That is, "Tang Jai."
  • Not Synced
    Tang Jai's literal translation --
  • Not Synced
for Tang is to firmly stand,
  • Not Synced
    and Jai means heart.
  • Not Synced
Firmly stand your heart at your goal.
  • Not Synced
    In Thai language,
  • Not Synced
when you commit to do something,
  • Not Synced
you put Tang Jai in front of your work,
  • Not Synced
so your heart will be in your action.
  • Not Synced
No matter how rough the path,
  • Not Synced
    how big the crack,
  • Not Synced
you push through to your goal,
  • Not Synced
because that's where your heart is.
  • Not Synced
    And yes, Thailand is home.
  • Not Synced
This land is my only home,
  • Not Synced
and that's where I firmly stand my heart.
  • Not Synced
    Where do you stand yours?
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    [Kob Kuhn Ka]
  • Not Synced
    (Applause and cheers)
