WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At this very moment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with every breath we take, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 major ... cities across the globe are sinking, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including New York, London, Tokyo, Shanghai, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 New Orleans, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and as well as my city, Bangkok. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here is the usual version of climate change. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is mine. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Nothing much, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just a crocodile on the street. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is an urgent impact of climate change: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our sinking cities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here you can see urbanization of Bangkok, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 growing in every direction. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Shifting from porous, agricultural land -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the land that can breathe and absord water, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to a concrete jungle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is what parts of it look like after 30 minutes of rainfall. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And every time it rains, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wish my car could turn into a boat. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This land has no room for water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It has lost its absorbent capacity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The reality of Bangkok metropolitan region is a city of 15 million people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 living, working and commuting on top of shifting, muddy river delta. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Bangkok is sinking more than one centimeter per year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Which is four times faster than the rate predicted at sea level rise, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we could be below sea level by 2030, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which will be here too soon. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is no coincidence that I am here as a landscape architect. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As a child, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I grew up in a rowhouse 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 next to the busy road always filled with traffic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In front of my house, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there was a concrete parking lot, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that was my playground. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The only living creature I would find, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and had fun with, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were these sneaky little plants trying grow through the crack 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the concrete pavement. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My favorite games with friends 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was to dig the bigger and bigger hole through this crack 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to let this little plant creep out -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sneak out more and more. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And yes, landscape archtitecture gives me the opportunity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to continue my cracking ambition -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to connect this concrete land back to nature. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Before Thais -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my people -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we were adapted to the cycle of the wet and dry season, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you could all us amphibious. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We lived both on land and on water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We were adapted to both. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And flooding was a happy event when the water fertilized our land. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But now flooding means disaster. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 2011, Thailand was hit by the most damaging 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and most expensive flood disaster in our history. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Flooding as turned central Thailand into an enormous lake. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here you can see the scale of the flood in the center of the image 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the scale of Bangkok outlined in yellow. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The water was overflowing from the north, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 making its away across several provinces. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Millions of my people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including me and my family, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were displaced and homeless. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some had to escape the city. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many were terrified of losing their home and their belongings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so they stayed back in the flood with no electricity and clean water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For me, this flood reflects clearly that our modern infastructure -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and especially our notion of fighting flood with concrete 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had made us so extremely vulnerable to the climate uncertainty. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But in the heart of this disaster, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I found my calling. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I cannot just sit and wait as my city continues to sink. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The city needed me, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I have the ability to fix this problem. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Six years ago, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I started my project. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My teams and I won the design competition for Chulalongkorn Centennial Park. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This was the big, bold mission of the first university in Thailand 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for celebrating its hundredth anniversary 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by giving this piece of land as a public park to our city. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Having a park sounds very normal to many other cities, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but not in Bangkok, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which has one of the lowest public green space per capita 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 among megacities in Asia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our project's become the first new public park in almsot 30 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The 11-acre park, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a big green crack at the heart of Bangkok, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 opened just last year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For four years, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have pushed through countless meetings 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to convince and never giving up to convince 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that this park isn't just for beautification or recreation; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it must help the city deal with water; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it must help the city confront climate change. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And here is how it works. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Bangkok is a flat city, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so we harnessed the power of gravity by inclining the whole park 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to collect every drop of rain. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The gravity force pulls down the runoff from the highest point 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the lowest point. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This park has three main elements that work as one system. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The first, the green roof. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is the biggest green roof in Thailand, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the rainwater tanks and museum underneath. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the dry season, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the collected rain can be used to water the park up to a month. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The runoff on the green roof then fall through wetlands 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the native water plants that can help filter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and help clean water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And at the lower end, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the retention pond collects all of the water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At this pond, there are water bikes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 People can pedal and help clean water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Their exercise becomes an active part of the park water system. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When life gives you flood, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you have fun with the water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Centennial Park gives room for people and room for water, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which is exactly what we in our cities need. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is an amphibious design. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This park is not about getting rid of flood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's about creating a way to live with it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And not a single drop of rain is wasted in this park. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This park can hold and collect a million gallons of water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every given project, for me, is an opportunity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to create more green cracks through this concrete jungle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By using landscape architeture as solution, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like turning this concrete roof to an urban farm, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which can help absorb rain, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 reduce urban heat [...], 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and grow food in the middle of the city. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Reuse the abandoned concrete structure to become a green pedestrian bridge. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And another flood proof park at .. ... University, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which nearly completes the biggest green roof on an academic campus yet 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in Southeast Asia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Severe flooding is our new normal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Putting Southeast Asian region, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the region with the most coastline, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at extreme risk. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Creating a park is just one solution. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The awareness of climate change mean we -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in every profession were are involved in, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are increasingly obligated to understand the climate risk 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and put whatever we are working on as part of the solution. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because if our cities continue the way they are now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a similar catastrophe will happen again 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and again. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Creating a solution in these sinking cities 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is like making impossible possible, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and for that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I would liek to share one word that I always keep in mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That is, "Tang Jai." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Tang Jai's literal translation -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for Tang is to firmly stand, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Jai means heart. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Firmly stand your heart at your goal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Thai language, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you commit to do something, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you put Tang Jai in front of your work, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so your heart will be in your action. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No matter how rough the path, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how big the crack, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you push through to your goal, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because that's where your heart is. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And yes, Thailand is home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This land is my only home, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that's where I firmly stand my heart. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Where do you stand yours? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [Kob Kuhn Ka] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause and cheers)
