[Heavy Danish accent] How much dedicated RAM will I need?
-
Disclaimer: This video isn't gonna be like my other videos.
-
If you're only gonna watch my [indistinct] League of Legends videos, then stop watching.
-
Also, if you're only here for results, the Dev Kit 2 won.
-
There, I just saved you two minutes of your time. You're welcome.
-
So a little while back CCP were nice enough to fly me out to EVE Fanfest in Iceland.
-
It was an absolutely awesome experience, I would definitely go again.
-
One of the things that I got to try out at the Fanfest was a project called Valkyrie.
-
It's dogfighting game in space in VR.
-
And I can safely say my expectations were blown out of the water.
-
This is my first time with hands-on virtual reality headsets
-
and specifically, I tried the Oculus Dev Kit 2,
-
and the Sony Project Morpheus.
-
With no previous experience, I have a completely unbiased mindset,
-
and these are my experiences with the two VR headsets.
-
First I tried out the Oculus Dev Kit 2,
-
and I was very surprised at the quality of the headset.
-
I assumed it was only a work-in-progress, as it is labelled as a dev kit,
-
but it was might as well have been sold as a final consumer product.
-
It has a nice one-size-fits-all mechanism that will adjust to your face,
-
and I saw that even people with glasses could wear it effortlessly.
-
It was a 1080p display, and I believe it had 60 Hz refresh rate,
-
but don't quote me on that. [actually 75 Hz]
-
And it took a few seconds for you to stop noticing the pixels,
-
I'm not sure that when you're this close to display, you're going to see them,
just as you put on the headset,
-
but overall, like, it didn't break immersion in the slightest.
-
I had no discomfort wearing the headset,
-
and the headtracking software seemed flawless.
-
It was truly a mind-blowing experience to try VR for the first time,
-
and I feel like it added a whole other level of depth and immersion to gaming.
-
The Morpheus on the other hand,
-
which, to my knowledge, is a consumer-grade product,
-
had its flaws. First of all, the rubber that was to attach around your eyes
and block out the outside light
-
seemed very cheap and gimmicky. It also didn't do its job,
-
for me and anyone I asked. Light came in from under the headset,
-
and that is a huge break in immersion.
-
The motion tracking also seemed to be lacking.
-
Upon several occasions, it glitched out and it bobbed my vision all over the place.
-
It didn't go very well with neck movements.
-
It should be known that the version of Valkyrie that we were running on the Morpheus
-
was an older version, and that might have affected the test to some minor degree.
-
However, that should not change both the hardware and software affiliated with Morpheus headset.
-
I have to say that the Dev Kit 2 is just objectively better.
-
It outperforms the Project Morpheus in every aspect of virtual reality headset,
-
apart from looks, maybe. I actually really like the futuristic look of the Morpheus,
-
you can look like a, like a fucking alien. Wah!
-
Anyways, um,
-
now I'm sure that the headtracking software will be improved,
-
and I hope to God that the Morpheus doesn't release with that gimmicky plastic.
-
Either way, it wasn't a problem to the point of ruining the enjoyment.
-
I thoroughly enjoyed virtual reality on both headsets,
-
and I'm definitely waiting for a final consumer-grade Oculus.
-
The game EVE Valkyrie was absolutely amazing, you can check out a trailer for it, links in the description.
-
It's probably the most fun I've had with gaming in a very long time,
-
and it's incentive for me to go buy a virtual reality headset, that's how good it was.
-
Check out CCP, and EVE on their website, also links in the description.
-
Thanks for flying me out to Iceland.
-
I hope you guys enjoyed the video,
-
and if you want to see more content from our trip to the Fanfest,
-
let me know in the comments.
-
I have a ton of extra footage from the trip,
-
um, yeah.
