Little Black Dress | The Style Pile Episode #1

  • 0:00 - 0:04
There is a box, in the corner of my sewing
    room.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
It is a box whose contents have not seen the
light of day for many a month.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
Many crafters will be familiar with this box,
    in all of its forms:
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    There’s the ever-growing amorphous lump
    that lies underneath your desk…
  • 0:14 - 0:19
    The monster underneath your bed…
The stuff you vacuum-packed in a fit of organization
  • 0:19 - 0:22
and stuffed into your garage in the hopes
that you’d never have to deal with it again…
  • 0:22 - 0:25
This, my friends, is the UNFINISHED SEWING
    PILE.
  • 0:25 - 0:40
Hi! So I’m starting this new series on my
channel. I have this box here, sitting in
  • 0:40 - 0:44
the my bottom of craft room, that’s filled
with half-finished projects and a bunch of
  • 0:44 - 0:50
thrifted clothes that I bought... some...
years ago, that I had all the intentions of
  • 0:50 - 0:56
fixing and upcycling and making cuter, but
then kind of just threw them in here and forgot
  • 0:56 - 1:04
about them and have been ignoring them for
a long time. But, as you can see – it’s
  • 1:04 - 1:08
turning into a little bit of a problem.
So, in each episode of this new series I’m
  • 1:08 - 1:13
going to be taking one item out of this box
and finally fixing it, until the box is empty.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
This series is mostly going to be focused
on simple fixes, so the videos are going to
  • 1:17 - 1:21
be quite short little episodes, but hopefully
they will teach you some more simple sewing
  • 1:21 - 1:25
techniques and cover a lot of the basics,
and at the same time help you to make your
  • 1:25 - 1:29
clothes… cuter! Anyway, I’m really excited
about this new series and I hope that you
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    enjoy it too.
Alright, let’s get started on the first project!
  • 1:32 - 1:37
So this is the first item that I pulled out
of the box. Now, I’m sure that some people
  • 1:37 - 1:42
would be able to pull off a dress like this
with a big ring right in the centre, but I
  • 1:42 - 1:45
am not one of them. It's… definitely not
    my style.
  • 1:45 - 1:49
So, first thing that I did was to get a small,
sharp pair of scissors and carefully cut the
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    ring out.
Then, I also cut off the loops that held the
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    ring in place.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
Now, I’m going to sew the remaining bits
  • 1:59 - 2:04
    back together, like this.
I thread a regular sewing needle with some
  • 2:04 - 2:08
black thread to match the colour of the dress.
To do this, I push the thread through the
  • 2:08 - 2:15
needle’s eye, pull it through, double the
thread over and tie a knot in the end.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
This, in my opinion, is the easiest way to hand
sew because you don’t run the risk of losing
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    the thread’s tail!
Then, I push the needle up through the back
  • 2:23 - 2:31
of one side, and then down through the front
of the other side. Then I repeat this, literally
  • 2:31 - 2:45
about 50 times, to secure the two pieces to
eachother very firmly. Then, with the thread
  • 2:45 - 2:48
on the inside of the dress, I tie a knot in
it and I cut off the excess.
  • 2:55 - 3:01
When I’m done, it looks like this. And you
can’t notice the threads at all unless your
  • 3:01 - 3:08
face is inappropriately close to my boobs,
so… success! I really like how this turned
  • 3:08 - 3:12
out, and now I have the cutest little black
dress, with an interesting cutout feature,
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    to wear out at night.
  • 3:23 - 3:29
And a super BIG thanks to Julia Elms for doing
the amazing artwork in the opening title - didn't
  • 3:29 - 3:30
    it look amazing??
