the science behind lofi music

  • 0:04 - 0:08
I started listening to Lo-Fi to figure out if
    there's any causation behind that
  • 0:08 - 0:12
correlation. I tried to teach an AI to
    generate the ideal study music.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
I feel like you could listen to it if the
    volume was at like one,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
and then you walked away and you listened to
    different music.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Please don't release it.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
Let me explain. Thank you to The Great
Courses Plus for sponsoring this video.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
When it comes down to focus,
    I have two modes.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
    I either start a task,
blink, and suddenly it's six hours later and
  • 0:33 - 0:41
I skip two meals, or I surround myself with a
    controlled level of distraction.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
many different audio playing What are you doing? I'm focusing.
  • 0:45 - 0:54
That was until I found lo-fi hip-hop chill
beats to study/relax to sparkle emoji.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
The titles are a bit much,
but you know what? I'm talking about,
  • 0:57 - 1:02
this girl. Anyway, I started listening to it
back in 2018 and I saw my GPA just explosion
  • 1:02 - 1:05
sound] and sure, there are several reasons as
to why that could have happened,
  • 1:05 - 1:10
but Lo-Fi music definitely makes me feel like
    I'm better at focusing.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Not every song, some slap a little too hard
and pull me right out of the zone,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
but there is a sweet spot.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    So today in this video,
you and I are going to figure out why Lo-Fi
  • 1:19 - 1:22
Hip Hop might help you focus.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
And if we can teach an AI to generate the
    perfect mix.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
So I started my research by looking into the
    history of Lo-Fi Hip hop.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
After that, I got a bit more familiar with
other experiments people have done with
  • 1:39 - 1:43
machine learning to generate new music,
and I've got two big takeaways from my
  • 1:43 - 1:48
initial readings. The first has to do with
the structure of Lo-Fi Hip Hop.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
Its iconic sound is composed of three parts.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    The first, a jazzy instrumental,
    the second,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
a drum beat combo of bass and snares called
    Boom BAP.
  • 1:58 - 2:03
It's played intentionally off kilter in a
style pioneered by the producer and rapper J
  • 2:03 - 2:08
    Dilla. And finally, intentional environmental
noise that leans even further into the
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    imperfections that define the genre.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
It usually plays at around 70 to 95 beats per
minute and falls within this range of
  • 2:16 - 2:21
frequencies. And that gives me a few key
characteristics to look into when trying to
  • 2:21 - 2:26
figure out why Lo-Fi can help people focus,
but it also leads to a second thing.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
It's an ingredient list and recipe for the
things I need to teach my machine.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Here's the plan. Okay,
here's how I'm gonna make music with a
  • 2:33 - 2:36
machine. Step one I need a bunch of
    instrumental and drum midis.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
These are basically files that contain
information about the note that's played, how
  • 2:40 - 2:42
long it's played, a bunch of other stuff.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
I don't know much about it.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    I'm an amateur. Step two.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
I'm gonna sacrifice it to the machine. I'm
going to be using an LSTM.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
So basically you have a sequence of notes.
And then the next step in the sequence you
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    tell the machine, "hey,
get really good at guessing what the next
  • 2:55 - 2:59
step is going to be," and then it gets really
    good at it.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
Finally, I'm going to smash that drum and
instrumental track together with some ambient
  • 3:04 - 3:07
music, and I put two step twos.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
This is step three. And then profit.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
Sounds easy right? It was not easy.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
I spent the next week swinging between
wanting to throw my computer out a window and
  • 3:19 - 3:21
wanting to throw myself out a window.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
Oh my God. Oh, jeez. Oh my God.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
Oh, Jesus. So it's been like three days.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
My code has run fully without error for the
    first time.
  • 3:31 - 3:36
So as long as there's any sound,
    I'm gonna be happy.
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    Okay, let's just play this.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
I'm not happy. Okay, let's fix this.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
Okay, so I think I've stopped it from just
    repeating the same note.
  • 4:01 - 4:06
Basically, we get caught up in this loop
where it was just like "the last note was a
  • 4:06 - 4:11
    C. The next note probably going to be a C,"
but then if it thinks that the if the last
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    note C, then the next,
it just gets caught up in this loop.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
Instead it has like this short list of likely
    next notes.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
And then it randomly samples from that short
    list.
  • 4:19 - 4:33
Anyway, here's how it sounds. Janky out of tune single notes
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    That hurt my forehead.
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    Isn't al.
  • 4:39 - 4:43
All right? That was headed to a dark place,
so I'm going on a walk to calm down.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
I'm also going to do a bit of reading as to
    why,
  • 4:45 - 4:52
like, those specific characteristics of Lo-Fi
music might help with studying and focus.
  • 4:52 - 4:56
I'm also going to collect a bit of
environmental noise for the final track.
  • 4:58 - 5:02
The more I read, the more I realized that the
    characteristics that make lo fi,
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    lo fi, that steady drumbeat,
    that frequency range,
  • 5:05 - 5:10
    that faux vinyl crackle,
all those things work together to create a
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    sonic environment tuned for focus.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
It's really interesting. I should warn you
that music's impact on your mind isn't
  • 5:18 - 5:22
universal. It depends on the task at hand and
the type of person you are.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
So if what you're doing requires a lot of
    thinking,
  • 5:24 - 5:27
or you're currently in a place where you're
going to get easily distracted, you should
  • 5:27 - 5:31
probably hit mute. We have a limited capacity
    for attention,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
and music uses up some of that essential
    resource.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
In reality, if you want to focus,
silence is almost always the better option.
  • 5:38 - 5:42
However, background music can provide two key
    benefits.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
So here's how Lo-Fi can help you focus.
  • 5:46 - 5:51
First, it can block out more intrusive noises
by forming an aural cocoon that tunes out or
  • 5:51 - 5:56
    reduces distractions,
by anchoring them to a predictable rhythm.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
Second, it can serve as a stimulant.
  • 5:58 - 6:02
Songs that vibe in the fine line between
putting you to sleep and popping off can
  • 6:02 - 6:05
improve your productivity without being too
    distracting.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
And that is where Lo-Fi Hip Hop comes in.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
The jazzy instrumentals and drum loops are
    refreshing and fun,
  • 6:12 - 6:16
but slow and repetitive enough that they
    become subconsciously predictable.
  • 6:16 - 6:21
In addition, the dampened frequencies and
environmental noise act as a blanket that
  • 6:21 - 6:26
blends the music together and pushes it into
    the background using spatialization.
  • 6:26 - 6:28
This makes the music sound less like a
    recording,
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    playing directly in your ears,
and more like something in a physical space.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    Finally, the genre's obsession with
    comfortable,
  • 6:36 - 6:41
nostalgic elements like vinyl crackle in
rainy days can help bring listeners peace and
  • 6:41 - 6:47
improve their mood. All of this combines to
make certain lo fi hip hop tracks easy to
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    process and ideal for focus.
  • 6:50 - 6:54
And with all of that in mind,
I now think that I know which parts of lo fi
  • 6:54 - 6:58
I should lean into while making new tracks
and which ones I should avoid.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
Now I just need to get the steaming pile of
garbage I call my code to actually function.
  • 7:04 - 7:09
Let's do this. It took another two days and
    just endless emotional turmoil,
  • 7:10 - 7:14
but I eventually was ready for my album
    release.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
This might have been a bad idea.
  • 7:19 - 7:20
Do you all know why you're here?
  • 7:20 - 7:23
I have no idea what I'm doing here.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
Apparently, this is the listening party.
  • 7:25 - 7:28
Before we get to the songs,
I do have a question for you guys.
  • 7:28 - 7:29
Okay. You know me pretty well.
  • 7:30 - 7:35
    On a scale of 1 to 10,
how musical do you think I am?
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    Like a three.
  • 7:38 - 7:39
    Which one's bad?
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    Zero.
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    Zero.
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    On a scale of 1 to 10.
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    Zero.
  • 7:45 - 7:48
You didn't know who Alicia Keys was?
  • 7:48 - 7:50
I was just gonna bring that up.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
So I would like to present to you the music.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
Which track would you guys like to listen to?
  • 7:56 - 7:57
    The worst one.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
Yeah. Let's work our way up.
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    This is an anxiety machine.
  • 8:10 - 8:14
    This sounds like, Now,
I'm not going to compare it to any music.
  • 8:14 - 8:15
That would be a disrespect to music.
  • 8:16 - 8:19
So you're telling me that isn't the lo fi hip
hop beat to chill and relax to?
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    A little far from that.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
The next one. Are you ready?
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    Which one would you like?
  • 8:25 - 8:26
Wait. Maybe this is the worst one.
  • 8:28 - 8:28
    Okay.
  • 8:31 - 8:35
    Okay. Wait for this drop.
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    There is no drop.
  • 8:39 - 8:42
No. Is this gonna be available in our
    newsletter?
  • 8:43 - 8:43
    It will be.
  • 8:44 - 8:46
Where can I subscribe to the newsletter?
  • 8:46 - 8:46
    Sabrina.
  • 8:47 - 8:51
    You can go to
    answerinprogress.com/newsletter.
  • 8:51 - 8:53
To sign up. All right. Let's go with the only
    good track.
  • 8:53 - 8:58
So to set the expectations this is the best I
    was able to do.
  • 8:59 - 8:59
    Okay.
  • 8:59 - 9:01
    I'm nervous again actually.
  • 9:01 - 9:08
Yeah that waveform is really aggressive. music of mostly kicks and occasional piano notes
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    Kind of minecrafty. music continues
  • 9:10 - 9:16
Very elevator music. Like I'm waiting for my
floor just past the seventh floor.
  • 9:18 - 9:18
    Yeah.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
Now we're at the 24th floor.
  • 9:20 - 9:20
    That was really funny.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
    Damn, that elevator's real fast.
  • 9:23 - 9:24
    I'm gonna close my eyes.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
It's getting creepier. I think the more that
    I listen to it,
  • 9:31 - 9:35
I'm like, I should not listen to this
    anymore.
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    It's unsettling.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    It is slightly unsettling.
  • 9:37 - 9:40
However, you know, it's just like,
    I don't know if it's a chill,
  • 9:40 - 9:47
lo fi beat, but from listening to this,
compared to the first lo fi beat singular
  • 9:47 - 9:49
that you created, this is this is a lot.
  • 9:49 - 9:51
This is a lot of improvement here.
  • 9:51 - 9:54
Here's what it sounds like. If I just use
like an actual drum loop designed by a human
  • 9:54 - 9:55
    being.
  • 10:00 - 10:06
This one's good. The big question,
Taha, could you study to this?
  • 10:07 - 10:09
I would definitely study to this.
  • 10:09 - 10:11
I feel like I have studied to this.
  • 10:11 - 10:12
How do you guys think I did?
  • 10:12 - 10:16
    I think you did Badly.
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    [Laughs]
  • 10:17 - 10:23
I think that the drum loop that you got did a
lot of the heavy lifting here.
  • 10:23 - 10:24
    Melissa?
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    [Laughs]
  • 10:26 - 10:28
    Damn, dude. Speechless.
  • 10:29 - 10:33
In fairness, it's it's pretty impressive that
    you got,
  • 10:33 - 10:36
    like, some semblance of,
    like, vibes.
  • 10:36 - 10:41
Yeah. We've created a new genre of music
    beats to be anxious to.
  • 10:41 - 10:43
To beats to be anxious to.
  • 10:45 - 10:48
Okay, so while that wasn't the hardest video
    I've ever had to make,
  • 10:48 - 10:52
I definitely felt like I bit off more than I
    could chew.
  • 10:52 - 10:57
Way more than once. It was the first time in
a while that I truly didn't know how to even
  • 10:57 - 11:01
start. Every step I just felt out of my
element and I felt like there was just so
  • 11:01 - 11:02
much more I needed to learn.
  • 11:02 - 11:05
But even though it took way longer than
    expected,
  • 11:05 - 11:08
it was really nice to go from this.
  • 11:11 - 11:11
    To this.
  • 11:12 - 11:13
    This one's good.
  • 11:14 - 11:16
Knowing all of the hard work that went behind
    it,
  • 11:16 - 11:21
and by the end, we were able to figure out
why lofi hip hop and ambient music can help
  • 11:21 - 11:26
you study and also make a few decent beats of
    our own.
  • 11:26 - 11:30
Kind of. Okay, I'll admit it was far from
    perfect,
  • 11:30 - 11:36
but if we gave up because our first attempt
or our first dozen attempts weren't perfect,
  • 11:36 - 11:37
    we wouldn't get very far.
  • 11:37 - 11:42
You know, that's just a lesson in lo fi and
    in life.
  • 11:42 - 11:45
I know that was a bad one,
    bye.
  • 11:46 - 11:48
Hey there, I hope you liked that video.
  • 11:48 - 11:52
If you did, please consider sharing it with a
few friends. It is easily the biggest way you

    girl.
  • 12:00 - 12:04

    harder after you leave,
  • 12:04 - 12:06
like the guided learning environment of
    university.
  • 12:06 - 12:09
And unfortunately I don't have the time or
