I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash (Beginner Song Guitar Lesson BS-105) How To Play
-
0:05 - 0:09I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
-
0:11 - 0:12I keep my eyes
-
0:12 - 0:15wide open all the time
-
0:16 - 0:18I keep the ends out for
-
0:18 - 0:21the tie that binds
-
0:22 - 0:24because you're mine
-
0:25 - 0:26I walk the line
-
0:27 - 0:31I find very very easy to be true
-
0:32 - 0:36I find myself alone when each day's through
-
0:37 - 0:39Yes, I'll admit that
-
0:39 - 0:41I'm a fool for you
-
0:42 - 0:44Because you're mine
-
0:44 - 0:46I walk the line
-
0:47 - 0:50Okay, this is a very very simplified
-
0:50 - 0:53version of "I walk the line" by Johnny Cash.
-
0:53 - 0:55I'm Justin, in case you didn't know already.
-
0:55 - 0:57Apologies to big Johnny Cash fans,
-
0:57 - 1:00because I'm trying to get stick
-
1:03 - 1:04it's just hard song to sing
-
1:05 - 1:07So we're gonna look at few different versions
-
1:07 - 1:10there's the actual one has bunch of other stuff going on
-
1:10 - 1:11a lot more chords in the intro
-
1:11 - 1:14single line things, key changes
-
1:14 - 1:17But it's such a wonderful song to play for beginners
-
1:17 - 1:20I've kinda simplified it down a little bit so that
-
1:20 - 1:23you can play it just with an E, A and D chord
-
1:23 - 1:26And even the strumming can be kept simple
-
1:26 - 1:27or you can make it a little bit more fancier
-
1:27 - 1:28Simple one first
-
1:29 - 1:31We've got whole bar of E
-
1:33 - 1:35followed by whole bar of A
-
1:35 - 1:36meaning 4 strums
-
1:37 - 1:39Back to E again
-
1:39 - 1:42for 4 strums and back to A again
-
1:42 - 1:43for 4 strums
-
1:44 - 1:46and 4 on D
-
1:48 - 1:49and back to A
-
1:50 - 1:52because you're E
-
1:54 - 1:56I walk the A
-
1:56 - 1:57And that again
-
1:58 - 2:00I keep an E watch
-
2:00 - 2:02on this heart of A
-
2:04 - 2:10I keep my E chord open all the A
-
2:12 - 2:13I keep the D out
-
2:14 - 2:15for the tie that A
-
2:17 - 2:19Because you're E
-
2:20 - 2:21I walk the A
-
2:24 - 2:24So, that's it
-
2:25 - 2:26You can play the tune like that
-
2:27 - 2:27why it's such a great one
-
2:28 - 2:30for beginner guitar players to play
-
2:30 - 2:30nice simple chords
-
2:31 - 2:334 down strums per bar - job done!
-
2:33 - 2:35But you can also take it a little bit further
-
2:35 - 2:38So, as you progress a litte bit on the guitar
-
2:38 - 2:39you might wanna try out
-
2:39 - 2:41the "boom-chicka" strumming pattern
-
2:41 - 2:43which is a classic kinda Johnny Cash thing going on.
-
2:43 - 2:46And to do that you kinda hit
-
2:46 - 2:49the first downstrum on the bass strings of the chord
-
2:49 - 2:52and then down up on the thinnest strings
-
2:52 - 2:53So bass down-up
-
2:53 - 2:55Boom-chicka
-
3:00 - 3:03So that one..... (counting)
-
3:11 - 3:13As soon as you apply that to this pattern
-
3:15 - 3:19I keep close watch on this heart of mine
-
3:19 - 3:23I keep my eyes wide open all the time
-
3:23 - 3:28I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
-
3:28 - 3:30Because you're mine
-
3:30 - 3:33I walk the line
-
3:34 - 3:36So you can see straightaway it has
-
3:36 - 3:37more of that kind of flavour if you want
-
3:37 - 3:40Definitely not something that beginner guitar players
-
3:40 - 3:41should be trying
-
3:41 - 3:42so if you're on my Beginners Course
-
3:42 - 3:44and you're doing the stage 1 still
-
3:44 - 3:45just stick with that easy strumming
-
3:45 - 3:47Worry about trying adding those
-
3:47 - 3:48fancier strumming patterns later
-
3:48 - 3:49It's really important
-
3:49 - 3:50that you don't tryna
-
3:50 - 3:52approach those things too earlier
-
3:52 - 3:54Because it'll make your
-
3:54 - 3:55it'll kinda mock up your strumming
-
3:55 - 3:57because you'll be stopping for your chord changes
-
3:58 - 3:59If you go like
-
4:04 - 4:06You're teaching yourself that it's OK
-
4:06 - 4:07to stop strumming and it's not
-
4:07 - 4:09Once you started strumming
-
4:09 - 4:10you gotta tryna keep that pattern going all the time
-
4:10 - 4:13So that's there's such a strong emphasis on the course
-
4:13 - 4:15on keeping the strumming real simple
-
4:15 - 4:17on those early songs
-
4:17 - 4:18until you kinda confident enough and fast enough
-
4:18 - 4:20with your chord changes
-
4:20 - 4:21that you can do a strumming pattern
-
4:21 - 4:23and keep going.
-
4:23 - 4:24So that's important.
-
4:24 - 4:25And if you wanna..
-
4:25 - 4:26If you're beyond that
-
4:26 - 4:28you can do regular 4 bar strumming
-
4:28 - 4:30you can do boom chicka thing
-
4:30 - 4:31the other that you can do
-
4:31 - 4:32is start alternating the bass part
-
4:32 - 4:34the bass note that you play
-
4:34 - 4:37so on the E
-
4:37 - 4:37E
-
4:38 - 4:39B
-
4:39 - 4:39you play the 6th string
-
4:39 - 4:435th string
-
Not SyncedSo you end up with that walking bass thing
-
Not SyncedIf I just play without speaking
-
Not SyncedSo you can hear it's suddenly a lot more complicated
-
Not Syncedgoing on when you get that alternating bass thing
-
Not Syncedbut again that's kind of the end of the beginners course kind stuff
-
Not Syncedthat you shouldn't...
-
Not SyncedAgain, can't emphasize enoung
-
Not Syncedif you are beginner guitar player
-
Not Syncedjust be really stoked with being
-
Not Syncedto get through the tune
-
Not Syncedand keep the strumming real simple
-
Not SyncedMake sure that you can get those
-
Not Syncedchord changes without having to stop your strumming
-
Not SyncedThat should be the aim for the stage-1,2,3 guitar players
-
Not SyncedYou know that's where you should be at
-
Not SyncedBut it's such a great song
-
Not SyncedApologies again to the Cash fans
-
Not Syncedfor simplifying it it and trying to sing like him
-
Not Syncedbut you know I'm tryna keep
-
Not SyncedJohnny Cash's music alive with the young generation
-
Not SyncedYou should all go on and checkout his music
-
Not Syncedbecause it's the best
-
Not SyncedI'll see for another lesson
-
Not Syncedvery soon, take care of yourselves!
-
Not SyncedBye-bye!
