I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash (Beginner Song Guitar Lesson BS-105) How To Play

  • 0:05 - 0:09
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    I keep my eyes
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    wide open all the time
  • 0:16 - 0:18
I keep the ends out for
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    the tie that binds
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    because you're mine
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    I walk the line
  • 0:27 - 0:31
I find very very easy to be true
  • 0:32 - 0:36
I find myself alone when each day's through
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Yes, I'll admit that
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    I'm a fool for you
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    Because you're mine
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    I walk the line
  • 0:47 - 0:50
Okay, this is a very very simplified
  • 0:50 - 0:53
version of "I walk the line" by Johnny Cash.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
I'm Justin, in case you didn't know already.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
Apologies to big Johnny Cash fans,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
because I'm trying to get stick
  • 1:03 - 1:04
it's just hard song to sing
  • 1:05 - 1:07
So we're gonna look at few different versions
  • 1:07 - 1:10
there's the actual one has bunch of other stuff going on
  • 1:10 - 1:11
a lot more chords in the intro
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    single line things, key changes
  • 1:14 - 1:17
But it's such a wonderful song to play for beginners
  • 1:17 - 1:20
I've kinda simplified it down a little bit so that
  • 1:20 - 1:23
you can play it just with an E, A and D chord
  • 1:23 - 1:26
And even the strumming can be kept simple
  • 1:26 - 1:27
or you can make it a little bit more fancier
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    Simple one first
  • 1:29 - 1:31
We've got whole bar of E
  • 1:33 - 1:35
followed by whole bar of A
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    meaning 4 strums
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    Back to E again
  • 1:39 - 1:42
for 4 strums and back to A again
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    for 4 strums
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    and 4 on D
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    and back to A
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    because you're E
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    I walk the A
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    And that again
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    I keep an E watch
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    on this heart of A
  • 2:04 - 2:10
I keep my E chord open all the A
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    I keep the D out
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    for the tie that A
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Because you're E
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    I walk the A
  • 2:24 - 2:24
    So, that's it
  • 2:25 - 2:26
You can play the tune like that
  • 2:27 - 2:27
why it's such a great one
  • 2:28 - 2:30
for beginner guitar players to play
  • 2:30 - 2:30
    nice simple chords
  • 2:31 - 2:33
4 down strums per bar - job done!
  • 2:33 - 2:35
But you can also take it a little bit further
  • 2:35 - 2:38
So, as you progress a litte bit on the guitar
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    you might wanna try out
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    the "boom-chicka" strumming pattern
  • 2:41 - 2:43
which is a classic kinda Johnny Cash thing going on.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
And to do that you kinda hit
  • 2:46 - 2:49
the first downstrum on the bass strings of the chord
  • 2:49 - 2:52
and then down up on the thinnest strings
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    So bass down-up
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Boom-chicka
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    So that one..... (counting)
  • 3:11 - 3:13
As soon as you apply that to this pattern
  • 3:15 - 3:19
I keep close watch on this heart of mine
  • 3:19 - 3:23
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
  • 3:23 - 3:28
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    Because you're mine
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    I walk the line
  • 3:34 - 3:36
So you can see straightaway it has
  • 3:36 - 3:37
more of that kind of flavour if you want
  • 3:37 - 3:40
Definitely not something that beginner guitar players
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    should be trying
  • 3:41 - 3:42
so if you're on my Beginners Course
  • 3:42 - 3:44
and you're doing the stage 1 still
  • 3:44 - 3:45
just stick with that easy strumming
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    Worry about trying adding those
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    fancier strumming patterns later
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    It's really important
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    that you don't tryna
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    approach those things too earlier
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Because it'll make your
  • 3:54 - 3:55
it'll kinda mock up your strumming
  • 3:55 - 3:57
because you'll be stopping for your chord changes
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    If you go like
  • 4:04 - 4:06
You're teaching yourself that it's OK
  • 4:06 - 4:07
to stop strumming and it's not
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    Once you started strumming
  • 4:09 - 4:10
you gotta tryna keep that pattern going all the time
  • 4:10 - 4:13
So that's there's such a strong emphasis on the course
  • 4:13 - 4:15
on keeping the strumming real simple
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    on those early songs
  • 4:17 - 4:18
until you kinda confident enough and fast enough
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    with your chord changes
  • 4:20 - 4:21
that you can do a strumming pattern
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    and keep going.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    So that's important.
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    And if you wanna..
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    If you're beyond that
  • 4:26 - 4:28
you can do regular 4 bar strumming
  • 4:28 - 4:30
you can do boom chicka thing
  • 4:30 - 4:31
the other that you can do
  • 4:31 - 4:32
is start alternating the bass part
  • 4:32 - 4:34
the bass note that you play
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    so on the E
  • 4:37 - 4:37
    E
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    B
  • 4:39 - 4:39
    you play the 6th string
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    5th string
  • Not Synced
So you end up with that walking bass thing
  • Not Synced
If I just play without speaking
  • Not Synced
So you can hear it's suddenly a lot more complicated
  • Not Synced
going on when you get that alternating bass thing
  • Not Synced
but again that's kind of the end of the beginners course kind stuff
  • Not Synced
    that you shouldn't...
  • Not Synced
    Again, can't emphasize enoung
  • Not Synced
if you are beginner guitar player
  • Not Synced
just be really stoked with being
  • Not Synced
    to get through the tune
  • Not Synced
and keep the strumming real simple
  • Not Synced
Make sure that you can get those
  • Not Synced
chord changes without having to stop your strumming
  • Not Synced
That should be the aim for the stage-1,2,3 guitar players
  • Not Synced
You know that's where you should be at
  • Not Synced
But it's such a great song
  • Not Synced
Apologies again to the Cash fans
  • Not Synced
for simplifying it it and trying to sing like him
  • Not Synced
but you know I'm tryna keep
  • Not Synced
Johnny Cash's music alive with the young generation
  • Not Synced
You should all go on and checkout his music
  • Not Synced
    because it's the best
  • Not Synced
    I'll see for another lesson
  • Not Synced
very soon, take care of yourselves!
  • Not Synced
    Bye-bye!
