-
0:01 - 0:03Nicole Paris: TEDYouth, make some noise!
-
0:03 - 0:05(Beatboxing)
-
0:05 - 0:06TEDYouth, make some --
-
0:06 - 0:08(Beatboxing)
-
0:28 - 0:30(Beatboxing ends)
-
0:31 - 0:32Are you ready?
-
0:32 - 0:34(Cheers and applause)
-
0:34 - 0:35Are you ready?
-
0:36 - 0:37Ed Cage: Yeah, yeah, yeah!
-
0:37 - 0:40(Beatboxing)
-
0:43 - 0:46(Laughter)
-
0:46 - 0:48EC: Y'all like that? Let me show you
how we used to do it -- -
0:48 - 0:50NP: Get it pops, go ahead.
-
0:50 - 0:52EC: ... when I was growing up in the '90s.
-
0:52 - 0:54(Beatboxing)
-
0:58 - 1:00(Beatboxing ends)
-
1:01 - 1:02(Laughter)
-
1:02 - 1:07(Beatboxing)
-
1:16 - 1:18NP: Pops, pops, pops, pops, pops, pops,
-
1:18 - 1:20hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up!
-
1:20 - 1:22Oh my God.
-
1:22 - 1:24OK, he's trying to battle me.
-
1:24 - 1:26Hold on, right now, hold on.
-
1:26 - 1:30Do you remember when you used
to beatbox me to sleep? -
1:30 - 1:31EC: Yeah, yeah, I remember.
-
1:31 - 1:34That's when she was a little baby.
-
1:34 - 1:35We would do something like this.
-
1:35 - 1:38(Beatboxing)
-
1:44 - 1:46NP: I remember that.
-
1:46 - 1:48(Beatboxing)
-
1:56 - 1:59NP: All right, pops, pops, pops,
chill out, chill out. -
1:59 - 2:00Hold up, hold up, hold up.
-
2:00 - 2:02EC: Y'all remember the video.
-
2:02 - 2:04This is like a little payback or something
-
2:04 - 2:06for 50 million people
calling me the loser. -
2:06 - 2:08NP: Hold up, hold up.
-
2:08 - 2:11But a lot of people out there don't
really know what beatboxing is, -
2:11 - 2:13where it started from.
-
2:13 - 2:14EC: Right, right.
-
2:14 - 2:15NP: Where it came from.
-
2:15 - 2:17So why don't you give
them a little history -- -
2:17 - 2:20just a tickle -- a bit of history
of where it comes from. -
2:20 - 2:22EC: Beatbox started here in New York.
-
2:22 - 2:23(Cheers)
-
2:23 - 2:27That's right, that's right.
New York, New York! -
2:27 - 2:28Everybody like, "Yeah!"
-
2:28 - 2:30Well, we from St. Louis.
-
2:30 - 2:31(Laughter)
-
2:31 - 2:33NP: Now you can put y'all hands down.
-
2:33 - 2:34(Laughter)
-
2:34 - 2:36EC: But beatbox started here in New York.
-
2:36 - 2:39What you would have is that,
when we would go to parties, -
2:39 - 2:41you would have the DJ
and you would have the rapper. -
2:41 - 2:44But because I don't have
electricity coming out of me, -
2:44 - 2:47we had to emulate
what the beats was doing. -
2:47 - 2:50So when you would see the beatboxer,
-
2:50 - 2:52you would see us over to the side.
-
2:52 - 2:55Then you would see a rapper,
and when the rapper began to rap, -
2:55 - 2:56we would do a simple beat,
-
2:56 - 2:58because back then the beats were simple --
-
2:58 - 3:03(Beatboxing)
-
3:03 - 3:04or --
-
3:04 - 3:10(Beatboxing)
-
3:10 - 3:12Those were simple beats.
-
3:12 - 3:16But now, you got folks that want
to do all type of stuff -
3:16 - 3:18with their beats now,
-
3:18 - 3:20and they want to humiliate their father,
-
3:20 - 3:23which is not right when you want
to humiliate the person -
3:23 - 3:26that take care of you, pay
all your tuition, (Nicole laughs) -
3:26 - 3:29especially when you have 50 million people
-
3:29 - 3:31that just go around
and call you "the loser." -
3:31 - 3:33Well, I'm taking that to heart.
-
3:33 - 3:35But now we do something
different in our house, -
3:35 - 3:37so we have these jam sessions,
-
3:37 - 3:41and our jam sessions consist
of us jamming in church. -
3:41 - 3:43You know, in church,
we'll look at each other like, -
3:43 - 3:45(Beatboxing)
-
3:45 - 3:46(Laughter)
-
3:46 - 3:48and we'll text the beat to each other.
-
3:48 - 3:50Or we'll be in the kitchen cooking,
-
3:50 - 3:52road trips, airports.
-
3:53 - 3:56NP: Standing right there in the corner,
"Aw, Dad -- listen to that." -
3:56 - 3:57(Beatboxing)
-
3:57 - 3:59Naw, I'm kidding. But you know what?
-
4:00 - 4:03We're talking all about this
jam session and everything. -
4:03 - 4:04EC: Yeah.
-
4:04 - 4:09NP: Why don't we give them a little peek,
just a tiny bit of our jam session? -
4:09 - 4:12NP: Y'all want to hear some jam session?
EC: Y'all ready for a jam session? -
4:12 - 4:13(Cheers)
-
4:13 - 4:15NP: Sorry? I can't hear you.
-
4:15 - 4:16(Cheers)
-
4:16 - 4:17Yeah! Kick it, pops!
-
4:17 - 4:20(Beatboxing)
-
5:18 - 5:22(Applause)
-
5:22 - 5:24(Beatboxing)
-
5:50 - 5:52(Beatboxing ends)
-
5:53 - 5:57(Applause)
-
5:57 - 5:59NP: I'm getting ready to go!
-
5:59 - 6:02EC: Y'all ready? Everybody stand up!
Come on, everybody stand up! -
6:02 - 6:04Get on up! Come on, stretch!
-
6:04 - 6:08(Beatboxing)
-
6:35 - 6:37(Beatboxing ends)
-
6:37 - 6:38NP: That's it.
-
6:38 - 6:41(Cheers and applause)
-
6:41 - 6:42Thank you! Make some noise!
-
6:42 - 6:44EG: Thank you, everybody!
-
6:44 - 6:45NP: Make some noise! Make some noise!
-
6:46 - 6:47Thank you!
