A scientific approach to the paranormal
-
0:01 - 0:05Eight years ago, I was haunted
by an evil spirit. -
0:08 - 0:10I was 25 at the time,
-
0:11 - 0:15and I was living in a tiny house
behind someone else's house -
0:15 - 0:16in Los Angeles.
-
0:16 - 0:20It was this guest house,
it had kind of been dilapidated, -
0:20 - 0:23not taken care of for a long time.
-
0:23 - 0:26And one night, I was sitting there
-
0:26 - 0:31and I got this really spooky feeling,
-
0:31 - 0:34kind of the feeling
like you're being watched. -
0:34 - 0:37But no one was there except my two dogs,
-
0:37 - 0:39and they were just chewing their feet.
-
0:39 - 0:43And I looked around. No one was there.
-
0:43 - 0:47And I thought, OK,
it's just my imagination. -
0:47 - 0:50But the feeling just kept getting worse,
-
0:50 - 0:55and I started to feel
this pressure in my chest, -
0:55 - 0:58sort of like the feeling
when you get bad news. -
0:58 - 1:02But it started to sink lower and lower
-
1:02 - 1:03and almost hurt.
-
1:04 - 1:08And over the course of that week,
this feeling got worse and worse, -
1:08 - 1:13and I started to become convinced
that something was there -
1:13 - 1:16in my little guest house, haunting me.
-
1:18 - 1:21And I started to hear these sounds,
-
1:21 - 1:27this "whoosh," kind of whisper,
like something passing through me. -
1:28 - 1:33I called my best friend, Claire, and said,
-
1:34 - 1:37"I know this is going to sound crazy,
-
1:37 - 1:39but, um ...
-
1:39 - 1:44I think there's a ghost in my house,
and I need to get rid of it." -
1:44 - 1:48And she said -- she's very
open-minded -- and she said, -
1:48 - 1:50"I don't think you're crazy.
-
1:50 - 1:54I think you just need
to do a cleansing ritual." -
1:54 - 1:55(Laughter)
-
1:55 - 2:01"So get some sage and burn it,
-
2:01 - 2:03and tell it to go away."
-
2:03 - 2:07So I said, "OK,"
and I went and I bought sage. -
2:07 - 2:11I had never done this before,
so I set the sage on fire, -
2:11 - 2:18waved it about, and said, "Go away!
This is my house! I live here. -
2:18 - 2:20You don't live here!"
-
2:21 - 2:24But the feeling stayed.
Nothing got better. -
2:24 - 2:26And then I started to think,
-
2:26 - 2:29OK, well now this thing is probably
just laughing at me, -
2:29 - 2:31because it hasn't left,
-
2:31 - 2:35and I probably just look like
this impotent, powerless thing -
2:35 - 2:37that couldn't get it to go away.
-
2:37 - 2:41So every day I'd come home
-
2:41 - 2:46and you guys, this feeling got so bad
that -- I mean, I'm laughing at it now -- -
2:46 - 2:50but I would sit there in bed
and cry every night. -
2:51 - 2:56And the feeling on my chest
got worse and worse. -
2:56 - 2:59It was physically painful.
-
2:59 - 3:03And I even went to a psychiatrist
-
3:03 - 3:06and tried to get her
to prescribe me medicine, -
3:06 - 3:10and she wouldn't just because
I don't have schizophrenia, OK. -
3:10 - 3:12(Laughter)
-
3:14 - 3:21So finally I got on the internet,
and I Googled "hauntings." -
3:21 - 3:24And I came upon this forum
of ghost hunters. -
3:24 - 3:26But these were a special
kind of ghost hunters -- -
3:26 - 3:28they were skeptics.
-
3:28 - 3:33They believed that every case of ghosts
that they had investigated so far -
3:33 - 3:36had been explained away by science.
-
3:36 - 3:40And I was like, "OK, smart guys,
this is what's happening to me, -
3:40 - 3:44and if you have an explanation for me,
I would love to hear it." -
3:44 - 3:47And one of them said, "OK.
-
3:47 - 3:51Um, have you heard
of carbon monoxide poisoning?" -
3:53 - 3:57And I said, "Yeah.
-
3:57 - 4:01Like, gas poisoning?"
-
4:01 - 4:04Carbon monoxide poisoning
is when you have a gas leak -
4:04 - 4:05leaking into your home.
-
4:05 - 4:11I looked it up, and the symptoms
of carbon monoxide poisoning -
4:11 - 4:14include a pressure on your chest,
-
4:14 - 4:19auditory hallucinations -- whoosh --
-
4:19 - 4:22and an unexplained feeling of dread.
-
4:24 - 4:26So that night, I called the gas company.
-
4:26 - 4:30I said, "I have an emergency.
I need you to come out. -
4:30 - 4:33I don't want to get into the story now,
but I need you to come out." -
4:33 - 4:35(Laughter)
-
4:35 - 4:37They came out. I said,
"I suspect a gas leak." -
4:37 - 4:40They brought their carbon
monoxide detector, -
4:40 - 4:42and the man said,
-
4:42 - 4:45"It's a really good thing
that you called us tonight, -
4:46 - 4:48because you could have been
dead very soon." -
4:50 - 4:55Thirty-seven percent of Americans
believe in haunted houses, -
4:55 - 5:00and I wonder how many of them
have been in one -
5:00 - 5:03and how many of them have been in danger.
-
5:05 - 5:10So that haunting story
has led me to my job. -
5:10 - 5:12I'm an investigator, and I'm
an investigator in two senses: -
5:12 - 5:14I'm an investigative journalist,
-
5:14 - 5:17and I'm also an investigator
of the claims of the paranormal -
5:17 - 5:19and claims of the spiritual.
-
5:19 - 5:21And that means a few things.
-
5:21 - 5:25Sometimes that means that I'm pretending
to need an exorcism -
5:25 - 5:29so I can get -- yes, that's right! --
so I can go to an exorcist -
5:29 - 5:33and see if he's using gimmicks
or psychological tricks -
5:33 - 5:36to try to convince someone
that they're possessed. -
5:36 - 5:39Sometimes that means
I'm going undercover in a fringe group -
5:39 - 5:43which I report on
for a podcast that I co-host. -
5:43 - 5:48And I've done over 70 investigations
like this with my co-host, Ross. -
5:48 - 5:53I would love to tell you
that nine times out of 10, science wins, -
5:53 - 5:55saves the day, it's all explained.
-
5:55 - 5:56That's not true.
-
5:56 - 6:03The truth is, 10 times out of 10,
science wins, it saves the day. -
6:03 - 6:06(Applause)
-
6:15 - 6:18And that doesn't mean
there's no such thing as a mystery. -
6:18 - 6:22Of course there are mysteries,
but a mystery is a mystery. -
6:22 - 6:23It is not a ghost.
-
6:24 - 6:28Now, I believe there are
two kinds of truth, -
6:28 - 6:32and it's taken me a while to get
to this place, but I think this is right, -
6:32 - 6:34so hear me out.
-
6:34 - 6:37I think there is outer truth
and there's inner truth. -
6:37 - 6:40So if you say to me,
-
6:40 - 6:43"There was a man named Jesus
and he once existed," -
6:43 - 6:45that's outer truth, right?
-
6:45 - 6:47And we can go and look
at the historical record. -
6:47 - 6:49We can determine
whether that seems to be true. -
6:49 - 6:52And I would argue,
it does seem to be true. -
6:52 - 6:58If you say, "Jesus rose
from the dead," -- ooh, trickier. -
6:58 - 7:00(Laughter)
-
7:00 - 7:07I would say that's an outer-truth claim,
-
7:07 - 7:09because he physically rose or he didn't.
-
7:09 - 7:12I'm not going to get into
whether he rose or he didn't, -
7:12 - 7:14but I would say
that's an outer-truth claim. -
7:14 - 7:16It happened or it didn't happen.
-
7:16 - 7:20But if you say, "I don't care
whether he rose from the dead. -
7:20 - 7:22It's symbolically important to me,
-
7:22 - 7:26and that metaphor is so meaningful,
so purposeful to me, -
7:26 - 7:28and I'm not going to try
to persuade you of it," -
7:28 - 7:31now you've moved it
from outer truth to inner truth, -
7:31 - 7:32from science to art.
-
7:32 - 7:35And I think we have a tendency
to not be clear about this, -
7:35 - 7:39to try to move our inner truths
to outer truths, -
7:39 - 7:42or to not be fair about it to each other,
-
7:42 - 7:44and when people are telling us
their inner truths, -
7:44 - 7:48to try to make them defend them
by outer-truth standards. -
7:48 - 7:51So I'm talking here about outer truth,
about objective things. -
7:51 - 7:57And there was an objective reality
in my haunted house, right? -
7:57 - 7:59Now that I've told you about the gas leak,
-
7:59 - 8:01I doubt a single person here
would be like, -
8:01 - 8:03"I still think there was a ghost, too" --
-
8:03 - 8:04(Laughter)
-
8:04 - 8:07because as soon as we have
these scientific explanations, -
8:07 - 8:09we know to give up the ghost.
-
8:09 - 8:13We use these things as stopgaps
for things that we can't explain. -
8:13 - 8:15We don't believe them because of evidence;
-
8:15 - 8:17we believe them because
of a lack of evidence. -
8:18 - 8:21So there is a group in Los Angeles
-
8:21 - 8:24called the Independent
Investigations Group, or the IIG, -
8:25 - 8:26and they do great work.
-
8:27 - 8:29They'll give a $10,000 prize
-
8:29 - 8:34to anyone who can show,
under scientific conditions, -
8:34 - 8:36that they have a paranormal ability.
-
8:36 - 8:38No one's done it yet,
-
8:38 - 8:43but they've had a couple people
who claim that they were clairaudients, -
8:43 - 8:47which means that they can hear voices
either from the great beyond -
8:47 - 8:49or they can read minds.
-
8:49 - 8:52And they had one person
who was very sincere, -
8:52 - 8:55who believed that he could read minds.
-
8:55 - 9:01So they set up a test with him,
and this is the way it always works. -
9:01 - 9:03The group says, "OK, we have a protocol,
-
9:03 - 9:05we have a way to scientifically test this.
-
9:05 - 9:06Do you agree with it?"
-
9:06 - 9:08The person says yes. Then they test it.
-
9:08 - 9:10It's very important that both sides agree.
-
9:10 - 9:13They did that, they tested him.
-
9:13 - 9:15They said, "OK, you know what?
-
9:15 - 9:19You weren't able to predict
what Lisa was thinking. -
9:19 - 9:21It matched up about the same as chance.
-
9:21 - 9:23Looks like you don't have the power."
-
9:23 - 9:25And that gave them the opportunity
-
9:25 - 9:30to compassionately sit down with him
and have a very difficult discussion, -
9:30 - 9:32which basically amounted to,
-
9:32 - 9:37"Hey, we know you're sincere,
and what that means is, -
9:37 - 9:39you do hear something in your head."
-
9:39 - 9:44And that guy got to make
the very difficult decision, -
9:44 - 9:50but really the life-changing decision
about whether to go get help. -
9:50 - 9:55We're actually helping people
to make these connections -
9:55 - 10:00that maybe before seemed like
otherworldly explanations, -
10:00 - 10:05help draw us into reality
and maybe change our lives for the better. -
10:06 - 10:12Now, on the other hand,
maybe one time it'll turn out to be true. -
10:13 - 10:15Maybe we'll find out there are ghosts,
-
10:15 - 10:17and holy shit, it will be the best thing!
-
10:17 - 10:20And every time I do
one of these investigations, -
10:20 - 10:22I still get so excited,
-
10:22 - 10:24and I'm like 75 into them,
-
10:24 - 10:28and still I swear on number 76,
I'm going to be like, "This is the one!" -
10:28 - 10:29(Laughter)
-
10:29 - 10:34Maybe I'm just eternally optimistic,
but I hope I never lose this hope, -
10:34 - 10:38and I invite you to take
this same attitude -
10:38 - 10:40when people share
their outer beliefs with you. -
10:40 - 10:43When talking about testable claims,
-
10:43 - 10:46respect them enough to ask
these good questions. -
10:46 - 10:49Challenge and see
how you can examine them together, -
10:49 - 10:54because there's this idea
that you can't respect a belief -
10:54 - 10:56and still challenge it,
but that's not true. -
10:56 - 10:59When we jiggle the lock,
when we test the claim, -
10:59 - 11:03we're saying, OK, I respect you,
I'm listening to what you're saying, -
11:03 - 11:05I'm going to test it out with you.
-
11:05 - 11:08We've all had that experience
where you're telling someone something, -
11:08 - 11:11and they're like, "Oh,
that's really interesting, yeah," -
11:11 - 11:13you know you're being had.
-
11:13 - 11:16But when someone says, "Really? Huh.
-
11:18 - 11:20Sounds a little sketchy to me,
but I'm listening," -
11:20 - 11:23you at least know
you're being engaged and respected. -
11:23 - 11:26And that's the kind of attitude
we should have with these claims. -
11:26 - 11:29That's showing someone
that you care what they're saying. -
11:29 - 11:31That's respect.
-
11:34 - 11:39Now, yes, most of these searches
will come up empty, -
11:39 - 11:41but that's how all of science works.
-
11:41 - 11:45Every cure for cancer so far
has not panned out, -
11:45 - 11:48but we don't stop looking,
-
11:48 - 11:49for two reasons.
-
11:49 - 11:52Because number one, the answer matters.
-
11:52 - 11:56Whether it's looking at the afterlife
or the paranormal or the cure for cancer, -
11:56 - 11:58it all amounts to the same question:
-
11:58 - 12:01How long will we be here?
-
12:02 - 12:06And two, because looking for the truth,
-
12:06 - 12:07being open-minded,
-
12:07 - 12:11and being willing to be wrong
and to change your whole worldview -
12:11 - 12:14is awe-inspiring.
-
12:14 - 12:18I still get excited at ghost stories
every single time. -
12:18 - 12:21I still consider that every group
I join might be right, -
12:21 - 12:23and I hope I never lose that hope.
-
12:23 - 12:25Let's all never lose that hope,
-
12:25 - 12:28because searching for what's out there
-
12:28 - 12:30helps us understand what's in here.
-
12:31 - 12:37And also, please have
a carbon monoxide detector in your home. -
12:38 - 12:39Thank you.
-
12:39 - 12:44(Applause)
