Corona is canceling flights but not teaching us to solve global warming

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Hi, I'm Ola from Gapminder.
  • 0:02 - 0:07
It's April 2020 and we're in the middle of the global Corona lockdown.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
It's very difficult times and I think many of us
  • 0:09 - 0:12
hope something positive will come out of this.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
I've seen people talk about global
warming and the fact that the airplanes
  • 0:16 - 0:19
across the world, almost all of them, are
    canceled.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
They hope this will show up in the
emission statistics as an example of
  • 0:23 - 0:25
how we have to live to stop global warming.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
I'm afraid of jumping to that conclusion.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
I think actually talking about it that
    way might backfire
  • 0:31 - 0:38
when people realize that: No. This is way too small to stop global warming.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions we need to understand where the gases come from,
  • 0:42 - 0:46
and the most important aspect is how rich people are.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
Here are 8 billion people, sorted so
  • 0:48 - 0:50
the poorest billion is to the left
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and the richest to the right,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
and that's the one I belong to,
  • 0:53 - 0:58
and we are responsible for half of all the greenhouse gas emissions.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
And the remaining emission, half of it comes from the second-riches.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
And the others only emit a quarter of the total.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
So it's really WE who are the problem.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Now, how much of this comes from airplanes?
  • 1:13 - 1:17
We asked this question to our
followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook,
  • 1:17 - 1:21
and also to 117 people in the UK.
  • 1:21 - 1:27
Here are their results. This comes from a small online poll we did in February with Google surveys.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
There are too few people to say anything for sure about the UK public,
  • 1:32 - 1:36
but you can clearly see how very few went for the small number.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
We are careful not to mislead people by how we design our questions.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
So we first ask the question with more answer options,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
like this, to 123 other people.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
You can see how the results are very similar,
  • 1:50 - 1:54
and Gapminder followers answered like this on Instagram, Twitter
  • 1:54 - 1:59
and 80% of our followers on Facebook picked the right answer:
  • 1:59 - 2:03
Less than 6 percent of greenhouse gas emissions comes from airplanes.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
which shows that our followers are way more knowledgeable
  • 2:07 - 2:10
than what I think the UK public is on this matter.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
In the UK instead a majority went for the wrong and the very wrong answer.
  • 2:15 - 2:21
They have probably heard that airplane emission is a huge part of the UK emissions.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
So what's the problem if people exaggerate the emissions from airplanes?
  • 2:24 - 2:27
"That will keep them away from flying " you might think.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
but I already heard people who are
    disappointed that,
  • 2:30 - 2:34
even after these sacrifices for Corona this is not enough to stop global warming
  • 2:34 - 2:38
expect that we're still heating our houses the same way
  • 2:38 - 2:40
and produce our food the same way.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    The main difference is a
little bit of traffic and the airplanes. Right?
  • 2:44 - 2:48
They need to realize that's a small fraction. Right now...
  • 2:48 - 2:52
In the future though, airplanes are gonna be a much bigger problem. I'll show you.
  • 2:52 - 2:59
Right before Corona, airplanes emitted roughly 5% of all greenhouse gases,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
that includes the high altitude effect
    above 8,000 meters
  • 3:02 - 3:08
if after Corona the trends continue, the future will look something like this
  • 3:08 - 3:12
By 2030 there will be 1 billion more people.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    Everybody struggle to get richer.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
and by 2050 they will have succeeded,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
and there will be two billion people flying airplanes.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
I'm not saying that I think this is a good
    thing:
  • 3:23 - 3:26
the kind of overconsumption at the rich end.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
I'm just saying that this is
the most likely thing to happen
  • 3:29 - 3:33
if the trends before corona continue afterwards.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
This much greenhouse gas will heat up the planet very fast.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
We the richest people will have to reduce our emissions
  • 3:41 - 3:44
and replace our energy sources with
    green energy
  • 3:44 - 3:48
to generate electricity and heat our homes and drive our cars.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
If we succeed bringing it down to this level,
  • 3:52 - 3:57
in 2050 the total emissions will be the same as they are today.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
But to avoid heating the planet 1.5 degrees,
  • 4:01 - 4:06
we'll have to cut that with 45% as well
  • 4:06 - 4:09
And in the future, if we want to fly
    across the Atlantic
  • 4:09 - 4:12
we'll need to have these kind of green airplanes
  • 4:12 - 4:15
which I haven't seen any of yet...
  • 4:17 - 4:21
So let's be careful not to confuse the discomfort from this corona lockdown
  • 4:21 - 4:24
with the kind of lifestyle changes needed to stop global warming.
  • 4:24 - 4:27
Instead we're going to learn other things from Corona,
  • 4:27 - 4:29
such as how vulnerable we are.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
Imagine a pandemic that actually kills children or have a higher fatality rate.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
Now we are at least a little bit prepared.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
And we learn how much we need a global collaboration in such situation.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
Please sign up to be a tester of our new
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    ignorance reduction service which were
    soon launching.
  • 4:47 - 4:52
We have tested thousands of fact questions where people are systematically wrong.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
Or just stay tuned to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
where are we're gonna keep posting many of these questions
  • 4:58 - 5:02
and we'll tell you when the service is ready.
