TH Sound - Practice Tip - Tom Kelley - Rachel's English
-
0:00 - 0:04Hi! I'm Tom Kelly, a Rachel's English teacher.
-
0:04 - 0:09Today's practice tip deals with what some students
consider a pretty tricky consonant sound. -
0:09 - 0:11The TH.
-
0:17 - 0:23For many students, the TH consonant ends up
sounding like an American English D or T consonant. -
0:23 - 0:30For instance, instead of saying "the", a very common word
that begins with the voiced TH consonant, -
0:30 - 0:34students will say "duh".
It's in the back. -
0:34 - 0:38You can hear the consonant sound "duh-duh".
-
0:38 - 0:42We want the TH sound "the - the".
-
0:42 - 0:48It's in the back. "In the - in the". It's in the back.
-
0:48 - 0:52Here are a few tips to help with your TH sound.
-
0:52 - 0:56First off, you want the tip of your
tongue to be between the teeth. -
0:56 - 1:00You don 't need to bite the tongue.
You can just gently rest the tongue -
1:00 - 1:03between the teeth.
-
1:03 - 1:06You also don't need to push a lot of the tongue out.
-
1:06 - 1:09It can just be the very tip of the tongue. That's enough.
-
1:09 - 1:15Another tip I have for you is to remember that
the TH consonant is a very gentle sound. -
1:15 - 1:18And it takes a bit of relaxation to find it.
-
1:18 - 1:24A great way to test your TH consonant sound is to see
if you're able to hold out the consonant. -
1:24 - 1:28For instance, here is the unvoiced consonant held out.
-
1:28 - 1:36TH
-
1:36 - 1:38Can you even hear it?
-
1:38 - 1:41It's a very quiet, gentle sound. Right?
-
1:41 - 1:46All that's happening is air is being pushed
past the tip of the tongue and the upper teeth. -
1:46 - 1:50You don't have to hold any tension
anywhere in your face for this sound. -
1:50 - 1:54Just rush the air past the tongue and teeth.
-
1:54 - 1:56TH
-
1:56 - 1:58Think
-
1:58 - 2:01Therapy
-
2:01 - 2:04For the voiced version of this consonant,
-
2:04 - 2:08all you do is add vibration of your
vocal cords and use just a little less air. -
2:08 - 2:11You should feel the vibration in your tongue.
-
2:11 - 2:15Again, you should be able to hold the sound out easily.
-
2:15 - 2:22TH
-
2:22 - 2:24Their
-
2:24 - 2:26This
-
2:26 - 2:28Their
-
2:28 - 2:31This
-
2:31 - 2:35Here's one last tip to help you work
on this challenging consonant sound. -
2:35 - 2:39We always talk about putting the tip of the tongue
between the teeth for this consonant sound. -
2:39 - 2:43Or having the tip of the tongue just
behind the opening between the teeth. -
2:43 - 2:46But what is the rest of the tongue doing?
-
2:46 - 2:51Think of the rest of the tongue being
low in the mouth and relaxed for this sound. -
2:51 - 2:54Many students will place the tip of the
tongue between the teeth, -
2:54 - 2:57but the rest of the tongue is actually lifted in the mouth
-
2:57 - 3:01which blocks the air from flowing easily
past the tongue and teeth. -
3:01 - 3:05If you do this, you will end up with that D or T consonant.
-
3:05 - 3:10With a low relaxed tongue, "there".
-
3:10 - 3:14With a lifted tongue blocking the airflow, "there".
-
3:14 - 3:18It sounds like a D consonant - "there"
-
3:18 - 3:20because my tongue is blocking the airflow.
-
3:20 - 3:23There, there.
-
3:23 - 3:26Keep that tongue low in the mouth.
-
3:26 - 3:31Don't forget to keep the rest of the tongue low
and relaxed when the TH consonant -
3:31 - 3:34comes in the middle or at the ends of words as well.
-
3:34 - 3:42Another, father, whether, myth, faith, bath
-
3:42 - 3:46Practice this sound by holding out
the consonant easily in words. -
3:46 - 3:50This will build up the habit of keeping
the tongue relaxed and letting the airflow -
3:50 - 3:53easily pass the tongue and teeth.
-
3:53 - 3:55TH
-
3:55 - 3:59Therapy
-
3:59 - 4:06Whether
-
4:06 - 4:11Faith
-
4:11 - 4:14You don't really need to hold out the TH that long.
-
4:14 - 4:16This is just a way to practice.
-
4:16 - 4:18That's all for today's practice tip.
