My Vegan Muscle Photo Shoot & Transformation!

  • 0:07 - 0:11
Welcome to the most narcissistic video I’ve ever made.
  • 0:11 - 0:15
It’s all about making me look as good as possible.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    Strong.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    Flawless.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Professional.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    [record scratch & music stops]
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    Well that didn’t last long.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
Hi it’s Emily from Bite Size Vegan
and welcome to another vegan nugget.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
I typically shy away from content focused
on my body and physical appearance
  • 0:40 - 0:46
as I have so many educational topics to address
that are of far greater importance than my abs.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
That said, there is validity in providing
a visual example of what one can achieve
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    without animal products.
So I’ll bust out the final pictures
  • 0:54 - 0:57
at the end of the video
    after sharing the shoot experience.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
Be sure to stay for the finals
but here’s a lil’ sneak peak.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
So, this past August I flew out
to Los Angeles for a photo shoot
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    with my friend Melissa Schwartz
    for the book she’s writing.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
I had a lot of work to do
to get into shape for this shoot
  • 1:12 - 1:14
and about two and a half months to do it.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
But after literally working my butt off,
though not all the way off
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    thanks to squatting heavy,
I was ready for my close up.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
For those interested, my routine consisted
of a core weight training regiment
  • 1:25 - 1:28
that varied in reps and sets
over the two and a half months,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    ample outdoor bike rides,
    sometimes twice a day,
  • 1:31 - 1:35
and some high intensity interval training
in the form of TABATA and PACE sessions.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
For some tips, tweaks and ample moral support,
I consulted with the chiseled Derek Tresize
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    and the stunning
    vegan fitness model Crissi Carvalho,
  • 1:43 - 1:47
both of whom you can find
in the vegan athlete series playlist
  • 1:47 - 1:49
linked in the sidebar and below.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
I’m so thankful to them both
    for their guidance, wisdom,
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    and for putting up with
    my photo-shoot-prep-induced insanity.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
So, on to the shoot itself.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Melissa Schwartz
    is an incredibly gifted photographer
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    and the mastermind behind
    the vegan revolution website
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    and upcoming book.
I’ll let her tell you a little about it herself.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    Hi, I'm Melissa Schwartz.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
    So the book is aimed
at helping people transition to veganism.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    And it's kind of--
everybody gives their own little story
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    about how they became vegan
    and what works for them
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    for their health and fitness.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
So today we shot some great pictures of Emily.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    Emily: And those great shots
have everything to do with Melissa
  • 2:30 - 2:35
because I had no idea what I was doing.
I’m not a terribly photogenic person,
  • 2:35 - 2:40
nor aware of how to position or angle myself,
so luckily she gave a lot of direction.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    And of course, as always,
    I went makeup free,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
save for my home-made vegan chapstick,
which you can find out how to make
  • 2:47 - 2:49
in the video linked up there and below.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    While I had Melissa,
I asked her about her own vegan journey.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    It wasn't until I moved to L.A.
and I was down on Third Street Promenade--
  • 2:56 - 2:59
and now I'm friends with the people that do this,
but there were people out there
  • 2:59 - 3:05
showing on a screen slaughterhouse footage
and I had never seen that before.
  • 3:05 - 3:10
And I was just shocked that it took
till that age for somebody to show that to me.
  • 3:10 - 3:16
Anybody that shows that kind of stuff to people,
the people react not so much badly
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    to the message,
they react badly to the messenger.
  • 3:19 - 3:24
So it takes people with a lot of balls
to come out and say what needs to be said.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
And that's one reason I have
tremendous respect for people like Emily.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    And not only that,
but she does it in such a way that is very...
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    you know,
she's not talking down to people,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
she's just telling you the truth.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    And often that is what people are doing;
they're just telling you the truth.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    Even when they're showing you
    some violent, graphic video.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
We're not doing it to shame anybody,
    that's the truth!
  • 3:46 - 3:51
There it is. If you feel ashamed
    that's something internal for you.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    Melissa’s book will cover
    the “why” of veganism
  • 3:53 - 3:57
    with her own rigorously-researched writing,
and the “how” with the stories
  • 3:57 - 4:01
and advice of the impressive array
of vegan contributors she has put together.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    And somehow
    I’m in there too.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    The accompanying website,
which is in development but viewable,
  • 4:07 - 4:11
will eventually have a social functionality
whereby you could hire the contributors
  • 4:11 - 4:15
    for personal training, coaching,
or whatever services they may have to offer.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    But back to my body.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    Because that’s
    what’s really important here.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
So, let’s see the final results, shall we?
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    So here’s me doing
    a nice squeeze side pose,
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    looking down
to be sure I’m flexing my abs.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
And on the insistence of Melissa,
    a booty shot.
  • 4:33 - 4:38
    Then the stare down.
And the booty pop side view.
  • 4:38 - 4:43
A black and white option, more subdued.
    The same one in color.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    And for some fun, yoga.
    There’s camel
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    and crow.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    So there you have it!
    My vegan muscle shoot.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    If you want to see
some actual athletes of the vegan variety
  • 4:55 - 4:59
and get some serious fitness inspiration,
check out my vegan athlete series,
  • 4:59 - 5:01
which still has more videos to come!
  • 5:01 - 5:05

this gratuitous display of my musculature,
  • 5:05 - 5:06
do give the video a thumbs up.
  • 5:06 - 5:09

I’d love to have you as a subscriber.

  • 5:11 - 5:13
    every Monday, Wednesday
    and some Fridays.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    Not typically
    consisting of my own body.
