David Altmejd: Des têtes | "Exclusif" | Art21

Episode #190: Filmed in 2011, David Altmejd discusses the head sculptures that he creates to accompany each new body of work. "Some sculptors make drawings, I make heads," says Altmejd. By using the same materials found in his larger works, he distills his larger ideas into compact form. Works in the film are shown at the artist's studio in Queens, and in his solo exhibition at Andrea Rosen Gallery in Manhattan.

With an almost childlike fascination for objects that grow, transform, and reshape themselves, David Altmejd creates sculptures, suffused with ornament, that blur distinctions between interior and exterior, surface and structure, representation, and abstraction. Altmejd abandons standard narrative conventions in favor of an exploration of materials, processes, and structures. In diorama-like tableaux, Altmejd pairs objects laden with symbolism—crystals, gold chain, and taxidermy—with virtuosic applications of materials such as plaster, thread, and mirrors.

[FEMME, VOIX OFF] On a besoin de quelque chose qu'on appelle «le ton ambiant».

[HOMME, VOIX OFF] Donc, vingt secondes de silence s'il vous plaît.

[HOMME, VOIX OFF] Ton ambiant...

[ALTMEJD] Je vois la tête comme un sorte de dessin, tu vois,

certains sculpteurs font des dessins,

je fais des têtes.

C'est juste une manière d'utiliser cet encadrement

pour expérimenter la combinaison des couleurs
et des matériaux.

C'est pour ça que je les vois comme des dessins.

On les a trouvé toujours dans ma pratique.

On les a trouvé toujours dans mon paysage.

Je pense que c'est vraiment la taille parfaite.

Tu sais, je pense que c'est comme le centre de l'univers.

J'aime bien l'idée que l'univers était de la taille d'une tête

avant le «blog bang», tu sais?

Quand je travaille sur une exposition,

je fais les têtes en utilisant juste les matériaux qui ont été utilisés

dans les pièces principaux.
