3 steps to turn everyday get-togethers into transformative gatherings

  • Not Synced
    When I was a child,
  • Not Synced
    every other Friday,
  • Not Synced
    I would leave my mother
    and stepfather's home,
  • Not Synced
an Indian and British, atheist, Buddhist,
  • Not Synced
    agnostic, vegetarian, new-age-y sometimes,
  • Not Synced
    Democratic household.
  • Not Synced
And I would go 1.4 miles
to my father and stepmother's home,
  • Not Synced
and enter a white, Evangelical Christian,
  • Not Synced
    conservative, Republican,
  • Not Synced
    twice-a-week churchgoing,
  • Not Synced
    meat-eating family.
  • Not Synced
    It doesn't take a shrink
to explain how I ended up
  • Not Synced
in the field of conflict resolution.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Whether I was facilitating dialogues
in Charlottesville or Istanbul or ??,
  • Not Synced
the challenge was always the same.
  • Not Synced
    Despite all odds,
  • Not Synced
    and with integrity,
  • Not Synced
    how do you get people
    to connect meaningfully,
  • Not Synced
    to take risks,
  • Not Synced
to be changed by their experience?
  • Not Synced
    And I would witness extraordinarily
    beautiful electricity in those rooms,
  • Not Synced
and then I would leave those rooms
  • Not Synced
    and attend my everyday gatherings
  • Not Synced
    like all of you --
  • Not Synced
    a wedding or a conference
    or a back-to-school picnic --
  • Not Synced
    and many would fall flat.
  • Not Synced
    There was a meaning gap
  • Not Synced
    between these high-intensity
    conflict groups
  • Not Synced
    and my everyday gatherings.
  • Not Synced
    Now you could say, sure,
    somebody's birthday party
  • Not Synced
isn't going to live up to a race dialogue,
  • Not Synced
but that's not what I was responding to.
  • Not Synced
    As a facilitator,
  • Not Synced
you're taught to strip everything away
  • Not Synced
    and focus on the interaction
    between people,
  • Not Synced
    whereas everyday hosts
focus on getting the things right --
  • Not Synced
the food, the flowers, the fish knives,
  • Not Synced
    and leave the interaction
    between people largely to chance.
  • Not Synced
So I began to wonder how we might change
    our everyday gatherings
  • Not Synced
    to focus on making meaning
  • Not Synced
    by human connection,
  • Not Synced
    not obsessing with the canapés.
