How empowering women and girls can help stop global warming

  • Not Synced
    There are two powerful phenomena
    unfolding on Earth:
  • Not Synced
    the rise of global warming,
  • Not Synced
and the rise of women and girls.
  • Not Synced
The link between them is often overlooked,
  • Not Synced
but gender equity is a key answer
    to our planetary challenge.
  • Not Synced
    Let me explain.
  • Not Synced
    For the last few years,
  • Not Synced
I have been working on an effort
    called "Project Drawdown."
  • Not Synced
Our team has scoured humanity's wisdom
  • Not Synced
    for solutions to draw down
  • Not Synced
    heat-trapping climate changing
    emissions in the atmosphere,
  • Not Synced
    not someday, maybe,
    if we're lucky solutions,
  • Not Synced
the 80 best practices and technologies
  • Not Synced
    already in hand:
  • Not Synced
    clean, renewable energy,
  • Not Synced
    including solar and wind;
  • Not Synced
    green buildings, both new and retrofitted;
  • Not Synced
    efficient transportation
    from Brazil to China;
  • Not Synced
    thriving ecosystems through
    protection and restoration;
  • Not Synced
    reducing waste and reclaiming its value;
  • Not Synced
    growing food in good ways
    that regenerate soil;
  • Not Synced
    shifting diets to less meat, more plants;
  • Not Synced
and equity for women and girls.
  • Not Synced
    Gender and climate
    are inextricably linked.
  • Not Synced
    Drawing down emissions
    depends on rising up.
  • Not Synced
    First, a bit of context.
  • Not Synced
We are in a situation of urgency,
    severity and scope
  • Not Synced
    never before faced by humankind.
  • Not Synced
    So far, our response isn't
    anywhere close to adequate.
  • Not Synced
    But you already know that.
  • Not Synced
You know it in your gut,
  • Not Synced
    in your bones.
  • Not Synced
    We are each part
    of the planet's living systems,
  • Not Synced
    knitted together with
    almost 7.7 billion human beings
  • Not Synced
    and 1.8 million known species.
  • Not Synced
We can feel the connections between us.
  • Not Synced
    We can feel the brokenness
  • Not Synced
and the closing window to heal it.
  • Not Synced
    This earth, our home,
  • Not Synced
is telling us that a better way of being
    must emerge and fast.
  • Not Synced
In my experience, to have eyes wide open
  • Not Synced
is to hold a broken heart every day.
  • Not Synced
    It's a grief that I rarely speak,
  • Not Synced
    though my work calls
    on the power of voice.
  • Not Synced
I remind myself that the heart
can simply break, or it can break open.
  • Not Synced
A broken open heart is awake
  • Not Synced
and alive and calls for action.
  • Not Synced
    It is regenerative, like nature,
  • Not Synced
    reclaiming ruined ground, growing anew.
  • Not Synced
Life moves inexorably towards more life,
  • Not Synced
    towards healing,
  • Not Synced
    toward wholeness.
  • Not Synced
    That's a fundamental ecological truth,
  • Not Synced
    and we, all of us,
  • Not Synced
    we are life force.
  • Not Synced
On the face of it, the primary link
between women, girls, and a warming world
  • Not Synced
    is not life but death.
  • Not Synced
Awareness is growing that climate impacts
    hit women and girls hardest,
  • Not Synced
    given existing vulnerabilities.
  • Not Synced
There is greater risk of displacement,
  • Not Synced
    higher odds of being injured
or killed during a natural disaster.
  • Not Synced
    Prolonged drought
    can precipitate early marriage
  • Not Synced
    as families contend with scarcity.
  • Not Synced
    Floods can force last-resort prostitution
  • Not Synced
as women struggle to make ends meet.
  • Not Synced
The list goes on and goes wide.
  • Not Synced
    These dynamics are most acute
    under conditions of poverty,
  • Not Synced
    from New Orleans to Nairobi.
  • Not Synced
Too often, the story ends here,
  • Not Synced
    but not today.
  • Not Synced
Another empowering truth begs to be seen.
  • Not Synced
If we gain ground on gender equity,
  • Not Synced
    we also gain ground
    on addressing global warming.
  • Not Synced
    This connection comes to light
    in three key areas,
  • Not Synced
three areas where we can secure
the rights of women and girls,
  • Not Synced
    shore up resilience,
  • Not Synced
and avert emissions at the same time.
  • Not Synced
    Women are the primary
    farmers of the world.
  • Not Synced
They produce 60 to 80 percent
    of food lower-income countries,
  • Not Synced
often operating on fewer than five acres.
  • Not Synced
That's what the term "smallholder" means.
  • Not Synced
    Compared with men, women smallholders
    have less access to resources,
  • Not Synced
    including land rights,
  • Not Synced
    credit and capital, training,
  • Not Synced
    tools and technology.
  • Not Synced
    They farm as capably
    and efficiently as men,
  • Not Synced
    but this well-documented disparity
    in resources and rights
  • Not Synced
    means women produce less food
on the same amount of land.
  • Not Synced
    Close those gaps,
  • Not Synced
and farm yields rise by 20 to 30 percent.
  • Not Synced
That means 20 to 30 percent more food
from the same garden or the same field.
  • Not Synced
    The implications for hunger,
    for health, for household income,
  • Not Synced
    they're obvious.
  • Not Synced
Let's follow the thread to climate.
  • Not Synced
We humans need land to grow food.
  • Not Synced
    Unfortunately, forests are often
    cleared to supply it,
  • Not Synced
    and that causes emissions
    from deforestation.
  • Not Synced
But if existing farms produce enough food,
  • Not Synced
forests are less likely to be lost,
  • Not Synced
    so there's a ripple effect.
  • Not Synced
    Support women smallholders,
  • Not Synced
    realize higher yields,
  • Not Synced
    avoid deforestation and sustain
    the life-giving power of forests.
  • Not Synced
    Project Drawdown estimates
    that addressing inequity in agriculture
  • Not Synced
    could prevent two billion tons
of emissions between now and 2050.
  • Not Synced
That's on par with the impact
    household recycling can have globally.
  • Not Synced
    Addressing this inequity
    can also help women cope
  • Not Synced
with the challenges of growing food
    as the climate changes.
  • Not Synced
There is life force in cultivation.
  • Not Synced
    At last count,
  • Not Synced
130 million girls are still denied
their basic right to attend school.
  • Not Synced
    Gaps are greatest
    in secondary school classrooms.
  • Not Synced
    Too many girls are missing
    a vital foundation for life.
  • Not Synced
    Education means better health
    for women and their children,
  • Not Synced
    better financial security,
  • Not Synced
greater agency at home and in society,
  • Not Synced
    more capacity to navigate
    a climate changing world.
  • Not Synced
    Education can mean options,
    adaptability, strength.
  • Not Synced
It can also mean lower emissions.
  • Not Synced
    For a variety of reasons,
  • Not Synced
when we have more years of education,
  • Not Synced
we typically choose to marry later
  • Not Synced
    and to have fewer children,
  • Not Synced
so our families end up being smaller.
  • Not Synced
What happens at the individual level
adds up across the world and over time.
  • Not Synced
    One by one by one,
  • Not Synced
the right to go to school impacts
how many human beings live on this planet
  • Not Synced
    and impact its living systems.
  • Not Synced
That's not why girls should be educated.
  • Not Synced
    It's one meaningful outcome.
  • Not Synced
Education is one side of a coin.
  • Not Synced
    The other is family planning,
  • Not Synced
    access to high-quality,
    voluntary reproductive health care.
  • Not Synced
    To have children by choice
    rather than chance
  • Not Synced
is a matter of autonomy and dignity,
  • Not Synced
    yet in the US,
  • Not Synced
45 percent of pregnancies are unintended.
  • Not Synced
    214 million women
    in lower-income countries
  • Not Synced
say they want to decide whether
    and when to become pregnant,
  • Not Synced
    but aren't using contraception.
  • Not Synced
    Listening to women's needs,
  • Not Synced
    addressing those needs,
  • Not Synced
    advancing equity and wellbeing:
  • Not Synced
    those must be the aims
    of family planning, period.
  • Not Synced
Curbing the growth of our human population
  • Not Synced
is a side effect, though a potent one.
  • Not Synced
    It could dramatically reduce demand
    for food, transportation, electricity,
  • Not Synced
buildings, goods, and all the rest,
  • Not Synced
    thereby reducing emissions.
  • Not Synced
    Close the gaps on access
    to education and family planning,
  • Not Synced
and by midcentury, we may find
one billion fewer people inhabiting Earth
  • Not Synced
than we would if we do nothing more.
  • Not Synced
    According to Project Drawdown,
  • Not Synced
    one billion fewer people
    could mean we avoid
  • Not Synced
nearly 120 billion tons of emissions.
  • Not Synced
    At that level of impact,
  • Not Synced
gender equity is a top solution
to restore a climate fit for life.
  • Not Synced
    At that level of impact,
  • Not Synced
gender equity is on par with wind turbines
  • Not Synced
    and solar panels and forests.
  • Not Synced
There is life force in learning
  • Not Synced
    and life force in choice.
  • Not Synced
    Now let me be clear:
  • Not Synced
this does not mean women and girls
    are responsible for fixing everything,
  • Not Synced
    though we probably will.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Equity for women in agriculture,
    education and family planning:
  • Not Synced
these are solutions within a system
    of drawdown solutions.
  • Not Synced
    Together, they comprise
    a blueprint of possibility.
  • Not Synced
And let me be even clearer about this:
  • Not Synced
population cannot be seen in isolation
    from production or consumption.
  • Not Synced
Some segments of the human family
    cause exponentially greater harm,
  • Not Synced
    while others suffer outsized injustice.
  • Not Synced
    The most affluent,
  • Not Synced
    we are the most accountable.
  • Not Synced
We have the most to do.
  • Not Synced
    The gender-climate connection
    extends beyond negative impacts
  • Not Synced
    and beyond powerful solutions.
  • Not Synced
    Women are vital voices
and agents for change on this planet,
  • Not Synced
and yet we're too often missing
or even barred from the proverbial table.
  • Not Synced
    We're too often ignored
    or silenced when we speak.
  • Not Synced
We are too often passed over
  • Not Synced
when plans are laid or investments made.
  • Not Synced
    According to one analysis,
  • Not Synced
just 0.2 percent of philanthropic funds
  • Not Synced
    go specifically towards women
    and the environment,
  • Not Synced
    merely 110 million dollars globally,
  • Not Synced
the sum spent by one man
on a single Basquiat painting last year.
  • Not Synced
These dynamics are not only unjust,
they are setting us up for failure.
  • Not Synced
    To rapidly, radically reshape society,
  • Not Synced
we need every solution and every solver,
  • Not Synced
every mind, every bit of heart,
  • Not Synced
    every set of hands.
  • Not Synced
We often crave a simple call to action,
  • Not Synced
    but this challenge demands
    more than a factsheet
  • Not Synced
    and more than a checklist.
  • Not Synced
    We need to function
    more like an ecosystem,
  • Not Synced
    finding strength in our diversity.
  • Not Synced
You know what your superpowers are.
  • Not Synced
    You're an educator, farmer, healer,
    creator, campaigner, wisdom keeper.
  • Not Synced
How might you link arms where you are
  • Not Synced
    to move solutions forward?
  • Not Synced
There is one role I want to ask
    that all of you play:
  • Not Synced
    the role of messenger.
  • Not Synced
This is a time of great awakening.
  • Not Synced
We need to break the silence
around the condition of our planet,
  • Not Synced
    move beyond manufactured debates
    about climate science,
  • Not Synced
    share solutions,
  • Not Synced
speak truth with a broken, open heart,
  • Not Synced
teach that to address climate change,
we must make gender equity a reality,
  • Not Synced
    and in the face of
    a seemingly impossible challenge,
  • Not Synced
    women and girls are
    a fierce source of possibility.
  • Not Synced
It is a magnificent thing to be alive
  • Not Synced
in a moment that matters so much.
  • Not Synced
    This Earth, our home,
  • Not Synced
is calling for us to be bold,
  • Not Synced
remind us we are all in this together,
  • Not Synced
    women, men,
  • Not Synced
    people of all gender identities,
  • Not Synced
    all beings,
  • Not Synced
    we are life force,
  • Not Synced
    one Earth,
  • Not Synced
    one chance.
  • Not Synced
    Let's seize it.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
