WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There are two powerful phenomena unfolding on Earth: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the rise of global warming, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the rise of women and girls. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The link between them is often overlooked, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but gender equity is a key answer to our planetary challenge. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let me explain. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For the last few years, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have been working on an effort called "Project Drawdown." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our team has scoured humanity's wisdom 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for solutions to draw down 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 heat-trapping climate changing emissions in the atmosphere, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not someday, maybe, if we're lucky solutions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the 80 best practices and technologies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 already in hand: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 clean, renewable energy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including solar and wind; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 green buildings, both new and retrofitted; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 efficient transportation from Brazil to China; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thriving ecosystems through protection and restoration; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 reducing waste and reclaiming its value; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 growing food in good ways that regenerate soil; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 shifting diets to less meat, more plants; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and equity for women and girls. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Gender and climate are inextricably linked. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Drawing down emissions depends on rising up. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 First, a bit of context. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are in a situation of urgency, severity and scope 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 never before faced by humankind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So far, our response isn't anywhere close to adequate. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But you already know that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know it in your gut, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in your bones. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are each part of the planet's living systems, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 knitted together with almost 7.7 billion human beings 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and 1.8 million known species. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can feel the connections between us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can feel the brokenness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the closing window to heal it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This earth, our home, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is telling us that a better way of being must emerge and fast. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In my experience, to have eyes wide open 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is to hold a broken heart every day. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a grief that I rarely speak, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 though my work calls on the power of voice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I remind myself that the heart can simply break, or it can break open. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A broken open heart is awake 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and alive and calls for action. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is regenerative, like nature, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 reclaiming ruined ground, growing anew. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Life moves inexorably towards more life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 towards healing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 toward wholeness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's a fundamental ecological truth, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we, all of us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we are life force. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On the face of it, the primary link between women, girls, and a warming world 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is not life but death. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Awareness is growing that climate impacts hit women and girls hardest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 given existing vulnerabilities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is greater risk of displacement, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 higher odds of being injured or killed during a natural disaster. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Prolonged drought can precipitate early marriage 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as families contend with scarcity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Floods can force last-resort prostitution 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as women struggle to make ends meet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The list goes on and goes wide. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These dynamics are most acute under conditions of poverty, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from New Orleans to Nairobi. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Too often, the story ends here, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but not today. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Another empowering truth begs to be seen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we gain ground on gender equity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we also gain ground on addressing global warming. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This connection comes to light in three key areas, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 three areas where we can secure the rights of women and girls, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 shore up resilience, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and avert emissions at the same time. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Women are the primary farmers of the world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They produce 60 to 80 percent of food lower-income countries, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 often operating on fewer than five acres. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's what the term "smallholder" means. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Compared with men, women smallholders have less access to resources, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including land rights, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 credit and capital, training, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tools and technology. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They farm as capably and efficiently as men, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but this well-documented disparity in resources and rights 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 means women produce less food on the same amount of land. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Close those gaps, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and farm yields rise by 20 to 30 percent. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That means 20 to 30 percent more food from the same garden or the same field. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The implications for hunger, for health, for household income, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're obvious. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's follow the thread to climate. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We humans need land to grow food. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unfortunately, forests are often cleared to supply it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that causes emissions from deforestation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But if existing farms produce enough food, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 forests are less likely to be lost, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so there's a ripple effect. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Support women smallholders, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 realize higher yields, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 avoid deforestation and sustain the life-giving power of forests. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Project Drawdown estimates that addressing inequity in agriculture 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 could prevent two billion tons of emissions between now and 2050. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's on par with the impact household recycling can have globally. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Addressing this inequity can also help women cope 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the challenges of growing food as the climate changes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is life force in cultivation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At last count, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 130 million girls are still denied their basic right to attend school. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Gaps are greatest in secondary school classrooms. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Too many girls are missing a vital foundation for life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Education means better health for women and their children, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 better financial security, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 greater agency at home and in society, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 more capacity to navigate a climate changing world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Education can mean options, adaptability, strength. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It can also mean lower emissions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For a variety of reasons, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when we have more years of education, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we typically choose to marry later 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and to have fewer children, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so our families end up being smaller. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What happens at the individual level adds up across the world and over time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One by one by one, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the right to go to school impacts how many human beings live on this planet 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and impact its living systems. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's not why girls should be educated. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's one meaningful outcome. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Education is one side of a coin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other is family planning, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 access to high-quality, voluntary reproductive health care. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To have children by choice rather than chance 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a matter of autonomy and dignity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 yet in the US, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 45 percent of pregnancies are unintended. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 214 million women in lower-income countries 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 say they want to decide whether and when to become pregnant, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but aren't using contraception. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Listening to women's needs, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 addressing those needs, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 advancing equity and wellbeing: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those must be the aims of family planning, period. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Curbing the growth of our human population 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a side effect, though a potent one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It could dramatically reduce demand for food, transportation, electricity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 buildings, goods, and all the rest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thereby reducing emissions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Close the gaps on access to education and family planning, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and by midcentury, we may find one billion fewer people inhabiting Earth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than we would if we do nothing more. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 According to Project Drawdown, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one billion fewer people could mean we avoid 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nearly 120 billion tons of emissions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At that level of impact, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gender equity is a top solution to restore a climate fit for life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At that level of impact, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gender equity is on par with wind turbines 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and solar panels and forests. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is life force in learning 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and life force in choice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now let me be clear: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this does not mean women and girls are responsible for fixing everything, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 though we probably will. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Equity for women in agriculture, education and family planning: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these are solutions within a system of drawdown solutions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Together, they comprise a blueprint of possibility. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And let me be even clearer about this: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 population cannot be seen in isolation from production or consumption. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some segments of the human family cause exponentially greater harm, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while others suffer outsized injustice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The most affluent, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we are the most accountable. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have the most to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The gender-climate connection extends beyond negative impacts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and beyond powerful solutions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Women are vital voices and agents for change on this planet, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and yet we're too often missing or even barred from the proverbial table. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're too often ignored or silenced when we speak. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are too often passed over 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when plans are laid or investments made. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 According to one analysis, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just 0.2 percent of philanthropic funds 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 go specifically towards women and the environment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 merely 110 million dollars globally, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the sum spent by one man on a single Basquiat painting last year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These dynamics are not only unjust, they are setting us up for failure. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To rapidly, radically reshape society, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we need every solution and every solver, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 every mind, every bit of heart, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 every set of hands. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We often crave a simple call to action, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but this challenge demands more than a factsheet 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and more than a checklist. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We need to function more like an ecosystem, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 finding strength in our diversity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know what your superpowers are. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You're an educator, farmer, healer, creator, campaigner, wisdom keeper. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How might you link arms where you are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to move solutions forward? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is one role I want to ask that all of you play: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the role of messenger. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a time of great awakening. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We need to break the silence around the condition of our planet, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 move beyond manufactured debates about climate science, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 share solutions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 speak truth with a broken, open heart, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 teach that to address climate change, we must make gender equity a reality, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and in the face of a seemingly impossible challenge, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 women and girls are a fierce source of possibility. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is a magnificent thing to be alive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a moment that matters so much. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This Earth, our home, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is calling for us to be bold, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 remind us we are all in this together, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 women, men, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people of all gender identities, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all beings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we are life force, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one Earth, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one chance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's seize it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
