Iron Deficiency ANEMIA Solution (Absorption Problem Resolved) 2021

  • 0:00 - 0:03
iron deficiency anemia can be a
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    debilitating condition
  • 0:04 - 0:06
as you may already know if you've been
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia
  • 0:09 - 0:11
this video is going to help you a lot
  • 0:11 - 0:12
because i'm going to give you some
  • 0:12 - 0:13
information in it that you may
  • 0:13 - 0:17
never have heard before iron deficiency
  • 0:17 - 0:19
anemia is very very common across the
  • 0:19 - 0:19
    world
  • 0:19 - 0:22
more than a billion and a half people
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    suffer from it
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    symptoms include fatigue weakness pale
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    skin
  • 0:27 - 0:30
shortness of breath dizziness pica which
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    means you have the
  • 0:31 - 0:34
overwhelming desire to eat dirt or clay
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    or ice
  • 0:35 - 0:37
and leg tingling those are the most
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    common symptoms
  • 0:39 - 0:41
the most common causes of iron
  • 0:41 - 0:43
deficiency anemia are either just not
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    eating enough iron
  • 0:44 - 0:47
or not absorbing enough iron and that's
  • 0:47 - 0:49
what this video is really going to help
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    you understand
  • 0:50 - 0:53
or you're losing blood from your body
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    somewhere that you may or
  • 0:54 - 0:57
may not know about so if you're having
  • 0:57 - 0:58
any of these symptoms or if you've been
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia
  • 1:00 - 1:02
definitely follow up with your doctor to
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    make sure you don't have
  • 1:03 - 1:05
some occult or hidden bleeding that
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    you're not aware of
  • 1:07 - 1:09
but then after you've got that situated
  • 1:09 - 1:11
then it's time to worry about
  • 1:11 - 1:13
number one eating enough iron number two
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    absorbing
  • 1:14 - 1:17
enough iron that's very very important
  • 1:17 - 1:19
i'm dr ken berry a family physician with
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    20 years of clinical experience
  • 1:21 - 1:23
and i'm going to give you what may be
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    your iron deficiency anemia
  • 1:25 - 1:27
solution the majority of the iron you
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    eat is absorbed through
  • 1:28 - 1:31
your duodenum which is the first part of
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    your small intestine
  • 1:33 - 1:34
most doctors know this you may or may
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    not have known this
  • 1:36 - 1:38
uh but there is a bell curve
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    distribution
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    for your personal ability
  • 1:42 - 1:45
to absorb iron from your diet and it
  • 1:45 - 1:49
it is partly genetic but it's also
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    partly the food
  • 1:50 - 1:51
that you're eating or the food that
  • 1:51 - 1:54
you're not eating many many doctors
  • 1:54 - 1:56
think that we all absorb iron the same
  • 1:56 - 1:58
exact way and in the same exact
  • 1:58 - 2:00
amount and that's just not true some
  • 2:00 - 2:02
people are very good at absorbing iron
  • 2:02 - 2:03
from their diet some people are very
  • 2:03 - 2:06
bad at absorbing iron from their diet
  • 2:06 - 2:08
there's a bell curve distribution like
  • 2:08 - 2:08
    this
  • 2:08 - 2:11
this graphic so most people are right in
  • 2:11 - 2:12
the middle of this chart they
  • 2:12 - 2:15
absorb iron color blue well some people
  • 2:15 - 2:17
are on one end of the curve and they
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    absorb it very very well
  • 2:18 - 2:21
out of their diet other people absorb
  • 2:21 - 2:23
iron very very poorly from their diet
  • 2:23 - 2:25
especially if they're not eating the
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    right kind of iron
  • 2:26 - 2:29
in their diet there are two basic kinds
  • 2:29 - 2:31
of iron you can get from your diet
  • 2:31 - 2:34
there's plant-based iron which is called
  • 2:34 - 2:37
non-heme iron and we won't get into what
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    that name means
  • 2:38 - 2:41
uh this is by far the most common iron
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    that everybody around the world
  • 2:42 - 2:47
gets in their diet uh the problem is
  • 2:47 - 2:48
is that there are things in plants
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    called phytic acid
  • 2:50 - 2:53
called polyphenols and call fiber which
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    can inhibit
  • 2:54 - 2:56
your absorption of the iron that's
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    contained in the plant-based food
  • 2:58 - 3:01
the most common sources of plant-based
  • 3:01 - 3:02
iron that you've probably been told to
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    eat lots of
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    are spinach kale fortified cereals
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    uh dried fruit apricots raisins
  • 3:10 - 3:14
and beans lentils soybeans and then you
  • 3:14 - 3:15
may have also been told to take
  • 3:15 - 3:18
an iron supplement or a multivitamin
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    with iron
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    the problem with plant-based non-heme
  • 3:22 - 3:25
iron is that we don't absorb a lot of it
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    none of us do
  • 3:26 - 3:28
even the very best absorbers can only
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    absorb up to 12 percent
  • 3:30 - 3:33
give or take of the non-heme iron in
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    plant foods
  • 3:34 - 3:38
some of us only absorb two percent of it
  • 3:38 - 3:41
because of the polyphenols the phytic
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    acid and the fiber
  • 3:42 - 3:45
and so if you are a poor absorber you
  • 3:45 - 3:47
can eat all the spinach and kale
  • 3:47 - 3:50
and soybean stuff that you want and
  • 3:50 - 3:52
you're just not going to get enough iron
  • 3:52 - 3:54
absorbed into your body that your body
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    can actually use
  • 3:56 - 3:59
and the iron found in iron supplements
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    and prescription iron pills are
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    notoriously
  • 4:02 - 4:05
poorly absorbed and much of them remain
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    in your
  • 4:06 - 4:08
your gastrointestinal system and wind up
  • 4:08 - 4:10
in your colon which leads to the most
  • 4:10 - 4:11
    common side effect
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    of iron supplements and iron
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    prescriptions which is constipation
  • 4:15 - 4:17
so if you've been eating tons of
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    fortified cereals that are supposedly
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    high in iron
  • 4:21 - 4:23
and lots of dark green leafy vegetables
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    which are
  • 4:24 - 4:26
high in iron but perhaps you can absorb
  • 4:26 - 4:28
them then what i'm about to talk about
  • 4:28 - 4:30
next may surprise you but it also may be
  • 4:30 - 4:33
the key that unlocks your prison
  • 4:33 - 4:36
of iron deficiency anemia the iron found
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    in
  • 4:37 - 4:39
animal foods like meat and eggs is
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    called
  • 4:40 - 4:43
heme iron and it is a different
  • 4:43 - 4:46
uh molecular kind of iron than you would
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    find in plants
  • 4:48 - 4:52
it is much much more absorbable
  • 4:52 - 4:55
and so even if a animal-based source of
  • 4:55 - 4:57
iron has less iron than a plant-based
  • 4:57 - 4:57
    source
  • 4:57 - 4:59
you're probably still going to get more
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    usable iron
  • 5:00 - 5:02
from the animal-based source meat and
  • 5:02 - 5:04
eggs than you would get from a
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    plant-based source because you're able
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    to absorb
  • 5:06 - 5:09
so much more of the heme iron versus the
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    non-heme iron
  • 5:11 - 5:13
great sources of heme iron in
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    animal-based foods are
  • 5:14 - 5:17
any liver at all from any animal is
  • 5:17 - 5:20
going to be a great source of heme iron
  • 5:20 - 5:21
many of the a serving of many livers
  • 5:21 - 5:23
will give you almost a full day supply
  • 5:23 - 5:26
of the iron that your body actually
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    needs to and can absorb
  • 5:28 - 5:30
to use to correct your iron deficiency
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    anemia
  • 5:31 - 5:33
other great sources are anchovies and
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    sardines
  • 5:35 - 5:38
any beef any any meat uh
  • 5:38 - 5:40
muscle flesh of an animal is going to be
  • 5:40 - 5:42
a good source of iron some are a little
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    better than others
  • 5:43 - 5:45
but if you if you are one of those
  • 5:45 - 5:47
people who just can't bring yourself
  • 5:47 - 5:50
to eat soft fluffy mammals which i
  • 5:50 - 5:52
totally get that i understand you can
  • 5:52 - 5:55
still get great sources of animal based
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    heme iron
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    from clams oysters mussels
  • 5:59 - 6:01
uh any poultry chicken or turkey or any
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    other poultry is a good
  • 6:02 - 6:06
source of iron uh any seafood whatsoever
  • 6:06 - 6:10
and then any egg and pasture raised eggs
  • 6:10 - 6:11
whether the chickens or turkey have
  • 6:11 - 6:13
actually been allowed to go out and eat
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    real
  • 6:14 - 6:16
chicken and turkey food have better iron
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    and
  • 6:17 - 6:20
more absorbable iron but even the cheap
  • 6:20 - 6:21
eggs from the grocery store even the
  • 6:21 - 6:24
cheap canned oysters or clams or mussels
  • 6:24 - 6:27
any of these are really good sources of
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    highly absorbable
  • 6:28 - 6:32
heme iron most heme iron is absorbed at
  • 6:32 - 6:33
    a rate from
  • 6:33 - 6:36
20 to 40 percent and so
  • 6:36 - 6:38
if you go back to the bell curve if
  • 6:38 - 6:40
you're one of those very very poor
  • 6:40 - 6:41
    absorbers
  • 6:41 - 6:43
of non-heme iron then adding just a
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    little bit of animal food
  • 6:45 - 6:47
into your diet meat and eggs or
  • 6:47 - 6:48
    hopefully liver
  • 6:48 - 6:51
you're going to get so much more iron
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    from just a small portion
  • 6:53 - 6:55
of the meat than you would get from the
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    plants
  • 6:56 - 6:58
most dairy foods are not really that
  • 6:58 - 6:59
    great of a source of
  • 6:59 - 7:02
heme iron definitely skim milk low fat
  • 7:02 - 7:04
milk two percent milk those are not
  • 7:04 - 7:06
going to give you much iron if any at
  • 7:06 - 7:06
    all
  • 7:06 - 7:09
uh parmesan cheese and then all of the
  • 7:09 - 7:10
    different
  • 7:10 - 7:13
goat cheeses are the best dairy options
  • 7:13 - 7:15
if you're trying to get iron
  • 7:15 - 7:18
from dairy now listen up this is very
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    important
  • 7:20 - 7:22
if you have made an ethical or religious
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    decision
  • 7:23 - 7:26
not to eat meat in your diet
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    that's okay but here's what you've got
  • 7:28 - 7:31
to understand if you're a poor absorber
  • 7:31 - 7:33
on the bell curve then you're never
  • 7:33 - 7:35
going to correct your iron deficiency
  • 7:35 - 7:36
    anemia
  • 7:36 - 7:39
unless you add in some kind of animal
  • 7:39 - 7:42
based heme iron into your diet so that
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    you can actually absorb it
  • 7:43 - 7:46
and your body can actually use it this
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    is what i call
  • 7:47 - 7:50
therapeutic meat okay now there are
  • 7:50 - 7:51
    multiple examples
  • 7:51 - 7:54
where religions have made exemptions for
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    people's health care
  • 7:55 - 7:59
a good example is a jewish rabbi
  • 7:59 - 8:03
has said that it's okay for jews to use
  • 8:03 - 8:06
desiccated pork thyroid in the form of
  • 8:06 - 8:07
    armor nature
  • 8:07 - 8:11
wp or thyroid because it's therapeutic
  • 8:11 - 8:14
and so even though jews are told not to
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    eat pork
  • 8:15 - 8:17
they can use this product because it has
  • 8:17 - 8:19
a therapeutic benefit that they perhaps
  • 8:19 - 8:20
    can't get
  • 8:20 - 8:22
    from the synthetic thyroid replacement
  • 8:22 - 8:25
hormones so i want you to consider
  • 8:25 - 8:29
    having a therapeutic meat exemption
  • 8:29 - 8:32
in whatever your ethical diet vegan the
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    vegetarian
  • 8:33 - 8:34
whether it's just ethical or whether
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    it's religious
  • 8:36 - 8:38
you really need to think your health
  • 8:38 - 8:39
    takes
  • 8:39 - 8:41
precedent over most of the things in
  • 8:41 - 8:42
your life if you're not healthy if
  • 8:42 - 8:44
you're constantly fatigued and short of
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    breath
  • 8:45 - 8:47
and considering eating the ice out of
  • 8:47 - 8:48
the inside of your freezer because
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    you're so iron deficient
  • 8:50 - 8:52
think how much more productive you would
  • 8:52 - 8:54
be think how much more uh
  • 8:54 - 8:56
successful you would be promoting things
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    that you believe in
  • 8:58 - 9:01
making money taking care of your family
  • 9:01 - 9:03
if you actually could get rid of those
  • 9:03 - 9:04
symptoms and get rid of your iron
  • 9:04 - 9:05
    deficiency anemia
  • 9:05 - 9:07
so i want you to really think about this
  • 9:07 - 9:10
and consider a therapeutic meat option
  • 9:10 - 9:12
and not that you're going to enjoy the
  • 9:12 - 9:14
eggs or meat not that you're going to
  • 9:14 - 9:16
proclaim that you're doing this not that
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    you're going to
  • 9:18 - 9:19
espouse this to other people you're
  • 9:19 - 9:21
    doing this for your health
  • 9:21 - 9:23
and i think that is ethical and and it
  • 9:23 - 9:25
makes very good sense to me
  • 9:25 - 9:27
now you don't have to eat mammals to get
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    your therapeutic meat
  • 9:29 - 9:32
treatment you don't even have to eat
  • 9:32 - 9:34
things with faces animals with faces you
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    could literally
  • 9:36 - 9:39
get your heme iron from clams oysters
  • 9:39 - 9:42
and mussels and from eggs so you never
  • 9:42 - 9:44
had to eat anything with a face and so
  • 9:44 - 9:47
i'm i hope you understand i'm being very
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    respectful i understand you've made a
  • 9:49 - 9:49
    choice
  • 9:49 - 9:52
ethically to not eat animals or to not
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    eat mammals or wherever
  • 9:54 - 9:57
your line of ingestion happens to fall
  • 9:57 - 9:59
and i respect that but at the same time
  • 9:59 - 10:00
i don't want you to suffer for the rest
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    of your life
  • 10:01 - 10:03
with iron deficiency anemia or wind up
  • 10:03 - 10:05
having heart failure or wind up having
  • 10:05 - 10:07
to have blood transfusions because of
  • 10:07 - 10:08
    this
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    disabling iron deficiency anemia that
  • 10:10 - 10:11
    you currently have
  • 10:11 - 10:14
the most at risk populations for
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    developing iron deficiency anemia
  • 10:16 - 10:19
are children of all ages uh reproductive
  • 10:19 - 10:20
    age
  • 10:20 - 10:22
women pregnant women and then the
  • 10:22 - 10:24
elderly these are the people most at
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    risk for developing this
  • 10:26 - 10:28
and these are the people that regardless
  • 10:28 - 10:30
of what ethical decisions you've made
  • 10:30 - 10:31
about what you're going to eat or not
  • 10:31 - 10:31
    eat
  • 10:31 - 10:33
you really need to think about the
  • 10:33 - 10:35
    therapeutic meat option
  • 10:35 - 10:38
in order to reclaim your health people
  • 10:38 - 10:40
who are frequent blood donors can have
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    this congestive heart failure patients
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    can have iron deficiency anemia
  • 10:44 - 10:45
    people with gut conditions like
  • 10:45 - 10:47
    ulcerative colitis crohn's
  • 10:47 - 10:49
celiac disease or if you've had a row
  • 10:49 - 10:50
    and y
  • 10:50 - 10:53
gastric bypass surgery you are at
  • 10:53 - 10:54
    increased risk for iron deficiency
  • 10:54 - 10:55
    anemia
  • 10:55 - 10:57
and even though you may not think it's
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    ethical to consume
  • 10:59 - 11:01
animal products i really think you
  • 11:01 - 11:02
    should consider the therapeutic meat
  • 11:02 - 11:03
    option
  • 11:03 - 11:05
another big population of people who
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    suffer from iron deficiency anemia
  • 11:07 - 11:10
and oftentimes they don't know why and
  • 11:10 - 11:12
maybe even their doctor doesn't know
  • 11:12 - 11:14
is people who take proton pump
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    inhibitors like ass effects
  • 11:16 - 11:19
prevacid protonix and nexium these block
  • 11:19 - 11:21
your stomach acid and stomach acid is
  • 11:21 - 11:25
vital for the proper absorption of iron
  • 11:25 - 11:27
from your diet and so if you're taking
  • 11:27 - 11:29
one of those pills and you've been iron
  • 11:29 - 11:30
    deficient anemic
  • 11:30 - 11:32
and your doctor didn't know why i
  • 11:32 - 11:34
couldn't figure it out that's probably
  • 11:34 - 11:34
    why
  • 11:34 - 11:38
in children iron is absolutely mandatory
  • 11:38 - 11:40
for them to develop into their full
  • 11:40 - 11:42
    potential as adults
  • 11:42 - 11:44
and one there there are many parts of
  • 11:44 - 11:45
the world where there's just no animal
  • 11:45 - 11:46
    food available or
  • 11:46 - 11:50
religious uh rules prevent children from
  • 11:50 - 11:51
    eating enough
  • 11:51 - 11:53
heme iron and animal based products in
  • 11:53 - 11:56
order to not be iron fishing anemic
  • 11:56 - 11:59
in the u.s and other modern societies
  • 11:59 - 12:01
it's very common for a child to be an
  • 12:01 - 12:02
    accidental vegan
  • 12:02 - 12:04
and i've got a video about that i'll
  • 12:04 - 12:06
    have it pop up
  • 12:06 - 12:08
here or here so that you can make sure
  • 12:08 - 12:10
that your child is not an accidental
  • 12:10 - 12:10
    vegan
  • 12:10 - 12:13
but that can lead to very severe iron
  • 12:13 - 12:14
    deficiency anemia
  • 12:14 - 12:16
and the doctor may not even be able to
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    figure that one out either
  • 12:18 - 12:19
i've included some research links in the
  • 12:19 - 12:21
    show notes down below
  • 12:21 - 12:22
if in case you want to do some further
