Journey to space in Axe Apollo Space Academy program | Pirada Techavijit | TEDxChiangMai
-
0:07 - 0:09Hello everyone.
-
0:09 - 0:14Today I would like to start off
with this picture here. -
0:14 - 0:17This picture was taken
from a very high spot. -
0:17 - 0:21It was taken 30 kilometres
away from Earth, -
0:21 - 0:24by a Thai who brought a camera up there.
-
0:24 - 0:28And what you can see
at the bottom is our Thailand. -
0:28 - 0:33You can notice
that even it was taken during the day, -
0:33 - 0:39the upper part is dark,
but at the bottom part it is blue. -
0:39 - 0:44Because the balloon
was nearly hit the space. -
0:45 - 0:47When we talk about space,
-
0:48 - 0:53many people may think that it is scary
and seems mysterious. -
0:53 - 0:58Yet on the other side, it is challenging.
-
0:58 - 1:02It makes some people want
to explore for the truth of space, -
1:03 - 1:04and where is its frontier?
-
1:05 - 1:08But this view, although it is beautiful,
-
1:09 - 1:14not many people
have seen it through naked eyes. -
1:14 - 1:18Most people only see it
through pictures like this one -
1:18 - 1:22and those people are astronauts,
-
1:22 - 1:25who maybe work
in the International Space Station -
1:25 - 1:28and look down to see our world.
-
1:28 - 1:30However, that is
a very small group of people. -
1:30 - 1:35Historically, the first man in space
was Yuri Gagarin. -
1:35 - 1:38Since then, 53 years have passed,
-
1:39 - 1:43not more than 600 people have seen
our world from up there. -
1:45 - 1:52Now, the astronauts, in our view,
are strong tall males. -
1:53 - 1:56And the truth is, in most cases,
-
1:56 - 2:03the selected astronauts we have seen
are the ones from powerful nations, -
2:03 - 2:06such as the United States of America
or the Soviet Union -
2:06 - 2:08at the time of the cold war.
-
2:08 - 2:14But who would have thought
-
2:14 - 2:17that a small woman from a country
-
2:17 - 2:22where no one has ever
been to space before -
2:22 - 2:27has a chance to go to the space next year.
-
2:27 - 2:30That is my humble self.
-
2:30 - 2:32(Applause)
-
2:32 - 2:34(Cheers)
-
2:34 - 2:36Thank you.
-
2:36 - 2:38Now, let me tell you something
about this story. -
2:38 - 2:43This project I participated in
was sponsored by Axe. -
2:43 - 2:49The Axe Apollo Academy is going
to take the first Thai to the space. -
2:49 - 2:53The first time I heard about this project,
I thought that this is my dream. -
2:54 - 2:57The dream I want to make it come true.
-
2:57 - 3:03Something I really want it to happen,
but also something least likely to happen. -
3:03 - 3:07They said, first, you have to be
the chosen one of your country. -
3:07 - 3:08You have to go to a camp,
-
3:08 - 3:11where we then select the ones
to go to the space. -
3:11 - 3:15So first, I have to make my way
in this camp. -
3:15 - 3:18Thailand selected candidates
by three means. -
3:18 - 3:22I was a winner of "Fan-Pan-Tae"
-
3:22 - 3:24which is a Game Show
well-known in Thailand. -
3:24 - 3:26We had to answer questions
within three seconds. -
3:26 - 3:30If you want to see it,
you can watch a rerun. -
3:30 - 3:34After that, we actually went
to a camp in Florida. -
3:34 - 3:38It was a base camp
that was very near to the NASA -
3:38 - 3:40and we also used some facilities
in the NASA building. -
3:40 - 3:42This is to let you see
how we were doing there. -
3:43 - 3:44The conditions of the real camp.
-
3:45 - 3:49As mention earlier, the candidates
from 62 countries worldwide came together. -
3:49 - 3:52These are the pictures of the atmosphere.
-
3:52 - 3:56There are 107 people from 62 countries.
-
3:56 - 4:01Those were selected from a million,
who were interested in this project. -
4:01 - 4:04There were three people representing
Thailand; I was the only woman. -
4:04 - 4:08There were four women in the whole camp.
-
4:08 - 4:13We were split up to form the teams
to do various activities. -
4:13 - 4:20Activities that will test
whether you can go to space. -
4:20 - 4:22The first one I have done.
-
4:22 - 4:26That day, I got up at four
and went from Orlando to Kissimmee -
4:26 - 4:28and went on the plane like this one.
-
4:28 - 4:31I was on the plane while filming this.
-
4:31 - 4:35The plane was like the military plane.
-
4:35 - 4:40That was something I have already
experienced before when I was in Thailand. -
4:40 - 4:43Back then, I had never been
on a military plane before. -
4:43 - 4:46I had to sit there,
and then they roll inverted. -
4:46 - 4:50That is when you experience
the G-Force, people talking about. -
4:50 - 4:53I had heard some said
that the G-Force is really strong, -
4:53 - 4:57but then I thought that if the pilot
can bear it, I can bear it, too. -
4:57 - 5:01But I had a moment of realization
when I actually experienced it. -
5:01 - 5:05When you make a five G inverted roll,
you are five times heavier. -
5:05 - 5:07For example, I weight 50 kilograms,
-
5:07 - 5:10at that moment,
I suddenly weighted 250 kilograms. -
5:10 - 5:12The weight is not that hard to bear,
-
5:12 - 5:16but when a lot of your blood
flows to your feet, -
5:16 - 5:21you realize that if you are
not holding tight, you may get fainted. -
5:21 - 5:25After the strong G-Force,
it is time to experience Zero-Force, -
5:25 - 5:27a state of weightless.
-
5:27 - 5:31This is a Boeing 737,
of which the seats have been removed. -
5:31 - 5:37This is not an ordinary flight, it makes
you feel like the plane is falling down. -
5:37 - 5:39Everyone inside was floating around.
-
5:39 - 5:41It looks like fun,
-
5:41 - 5:46but some had to thrown up
because they could not bear it. -
5:46 - 5:50Apart from activities like these,
which test your capability, -
5:50 - 5:54they also want to see
if you are strong enough. -
5:54 - 5:56So they took the assault course,
-
5:56 - 5:59which is actually
a military assault course -
5:59 - 6:01used in the military practice.
-
6:01 - 6:04We had to climb, jump over hurdles,
-
6:04 - 6:08crawl underneath nets,
did sit-ups, push-ups, and skip rope. -
6:08 - 6:10Approximately ten activities in a row.
-
6:10 - 6:15Women and men had to do
exactly the same activities. -
6:15 - 6:18And for me, the sport I do
-
6:18 - 6:21- I am 30 years old -
-
6:21 - 6:23is usually yoga.
-
6:23 - 6:25But I had to do those activities.
-
6:25 - 6:28I remember that Dennis was next to me.
-
6:28 - 6:32I could not climb over the climbing wall,
I just did not know how. -
6:32 - 6:36Do I have to use both hands or do I have
to push myself up using my feet? -
6:36 - 6:38The coordination of your body
must be just right. -
6:38 - 6:44Once it starts, every man made the way up,
while I kept falling down. -
6:44 - 6:47My legs were about
half the length of theirs. -
6:47 - 6:50Everybody was so tall.
-
6:50 - 6:53At that moment, I was losing my faith.
-
6:53 - 6:57They told us that from 107
selected candidates in this camp -
6:57 - 7:01only 23 will be chosen to go to space.
-
7:01 - 7:04So if I could not do
any of these activities, -
7:04 - 7:09it means that I am likely to loose
the ticket to space. -
7:09 - 7:13In this picture, you may see
that I was at the bottom -
7:13 - 7:17and Dennis had to come down to pull me up,
-
7:17 - 7:19"You can still climb, you can do it."
-
7:19 - 7:23So I managed to climb up: sit-ups,
push-ups, or carrying sacks, -
7:23 - 7:25we all had to do the same things,
-
7:25 - 7:27For me, I feel that this is really hard,
-
7:27 - 7:30because I am a woman,
and I have never done such things before. -
7:30 - 7:34I almost fainted but then I thought,
-
7:34 - 7:40if I have already made it this far,
I have to do my best. -
7:40 - 7:45Finally, I was awarded
with one of the 23 tickets -
7:45 - 7:49to fly to space next year.
-
7:49 - 7:51Next to me
-
7:51 - 7:53(Applause)
-
7:53 - 7:56- Thank you -
-
7:56 - 8:00...next to me is Mister Buzz Aldrin,
-
8:00 - 8:03who was the second man
on the Moon, after Neil Armstrong. -
8:03 - 8:06He was also in the Apollo 11 mission.
-
8:06 - 8:09It was a big honour
that he gave us award that day. -
8:09 - 8:14This is the most miraculous story
that ever happen in my entire life. -
8:14 - 8:19After that, many people asked,
"Aren't you afraid of going to space? -
8:19 - 8:21How can you be so brave?"
-
8:21 - 8:23But for me, I see myself
-
8:23 - 8:27as a normal person, who maybe
puts more effort into things. -
8:27 - 8:31Rather than asking if I am afraid, ask me
if there is anything I am not scared of. -
8:31 - 8:34From the beginning,
when I had to win the gameshow. -
8:34 - 8:35You have to understand
-
8:35 - 8:39that I am just a nerdy person
who works as an ordinary engineer, -
8:39 - 8:45but then I had to be on TV,
participating in a game show. -
8:45 - 8:49I really had to try very hard.
-
8:49 - 8:52That is why I wanted
to tell you something. -
8:52 - 8:58We all have a comfort zone.
I am sure you have heard of it before. -
8:58 - 9:01It is the space where
we can be comfortable. -
9:01 - 9:04Our everyday routine is in this zone.
-
9:04 - 9:05I also have one.
-
9:05 - 9:09But one day, you have to step out
of your comfort zone. -
9:09 - 9:11A lot of people do not dare to step out.
-
9:11 - 9:15I was also one who felt that this is scary
and I do not dare to step out. -
9:15 - 9:18But when I was forced
to make a big decision; -
9:18 - 9:23either try or I let the golden opportunity
I ever dreamed of slip through my hands. -
9:23 - 9:29So I slowly expanded
my horizon until I entered -
9:29 - 9:36the where-the-magic happens zone,
where my miraculous story happened. -
9:36 - 9:39But if I am asked
whether the magic immediately happens, -
9:39 - 9:40I have to say it does not.
-
9:40 - 9:44Before that - I have to share
with you a little experience - -
9:44 - 9:50before that I was living in Lampang,
I was a normal child from the countryside. -
9:50 - 9:55The first time I left my country,
I was an apprentice at Intel in India. -
9:55 - 9:57I had to live in India for a year.
-
9:57 - 10:03Many parents would not allow
their daughter to go there, -
10:03 - 10:07but since they are my parents
they told me, "That's OK, dear. Just go." -
10:07 - 10:10So I was part of the team
that got a training in India for a year. -
10:10 - 10:16Another time was when I had
the opportunity to study in France. -
10:17 - 10:21The hard part was
that everything is in French, -
10:21 - 10:24and I could not speak
a single French word. -
10:24 - 10:28I had to learn French,
from the beginning, within four months -
10:28 - 10:31then started to study
for my master degree, all in French. -
10:31 - 10:33All my classmates were French.
-
10:33 - 10:35Back then, everyone told me,
-
10:35 - 10:38"You can not succeed.
You are really struggled. -
10:38 - 10:41You should learn French again
for a year and come back later." -
10:41 - 10:45But I insisted, "Please let me continue.
Let me prove myself." -
10:45 - 10:51And in the end, I managed to graduate
with all my other classmates. -
10:51 - 10:54So I discovered that sometimes,
-
10:54 - 10:59the limitations that people told us
or the conditions we impose ourselves, -
10:59 - 11:04are not really there.
-
11:04 - 11:08Do you still remember what you wanted
to be when you was a child? -
11:08 - 11:10When I received my space ticket,
-
11:10 - 11:14I had opportunities
to visit schools and universities -
11:14 - 11:17to tell the students my story.
-
11:18 - 11:22And I realized that those who are
most excited by this story -
11:22 - 11:24are the children.
-
11:24 - 11:27And they felt that these stories
can actually happen. -
11:27 - 11:29This is their dream.
-
11:29 - 11:33They also want to be astronauts.
-
11:33 - 11:35But as we grow up,
-
11:35 - 11:40we tend to forget about our dreams,
and what we wanted to become. -
11:40 - 11:41Today I would ask you again
-
11:44 - 11:50- the last slide, please -
-
11:50 - 11:54What did you want to be
when you were young? -
11:54 - 11:58Or also, for now, what is your dream?
-
11:58 - 12:02Have your dreams already been fulfilled?
-
12:02 - 12:07If not, I want to tell you to dare,
-
12:07 - 12:10to get out and follow your dreams.
-
12:10 - 12:14Because there is nobody who is not afraid.
-
12:14 - 12:18I was also afraid,
but what I did is I dared to do, -
12:18 - 12:21even though I was afraid.
-
12:21 - 12:26Try expand your comfort zone,
stretch it out. -
12:26 - 12:30Because every time
when you do it, you will grow. -
12:30 - 12:32There may be mistakes.
-
12:32 - 12:37I also admit that there are
many mistakes in my life. -
12:37 - 12:41And who has never done anything wrong?
-
12:41 - 12:43I don't think there is.
-
12:43 - 12:46If there were such people,
I think they are facing a real problem -
12:46 - 12:50because errors are always part of success.
-
12:50 - 12:53I want to encourage all of you
to follow your dream, -
12:53 - 12:57no matter what it is,
no matter how far it would be. -
12:57 - 12:59Although others said it is impossible,
-
12:59 - 13:02there is only you
who can say it is possible. -
13:02 - 13:04Get up and make your dreams come true.
-
13:04 - 13:06Thank you.
-
13:06 - 13:09(Applause)
