Journey to space in Axe Apollo Space Academy program | Pirada Techavijit | TEDxChiangMai

  • 0:07 - 0:09
    Hello everyone.
  • 0:09 - 0:14
Today I would like to start off
    with this picture here.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    This picture was taken
    from a very high spot.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    It was taken 30 kilometres
    away from Earth,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
by a Thai who brought a camera up there.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    And what you can see
at the bottom is our Thailand.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
    You can notice
that even it was taken during the day,
  • 0:33 - 0:39
    the upper part is dark,
but at the bottom part it is blue.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
    Because the balloon
    was nearly hit the space.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    When we talk about space,
  • 0:48 - 0:53
many people may think that it is scary
    and seems mysterious.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
Yet on the other side, it is challenging.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    It makes some people want
to explore for the truth of space,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    and where is its frontier?
  • 1:05 - 1:08
But this view, although it is beautiful,
  • 1:09 - 1:14
    not many people
have seen it through naked eyes.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    Most people only see it
    through pictures like this one
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    and those people are astronauts,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    who maybe work
    in the International Space Station
  • 1:25 - 1:28
and look down to see our world.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    However, that is
a very small group of people.
  • 1:30 - 1:35
Historically, the first man in space
    was Yuri Gagarin.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
Since then, 53 years have passed,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
not more than 600 people have seen
    our world from up there.
  • 1:45 - 1:52
Now, the astronauts, in our view,
    are strong tall males.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
And the truth is, in most cases,
  • 1:56 - 2:03
the selected astronauts we have seen
are the ones from powerful nations,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
such as the United States of America
    or the Soviet Union
  • 2:06 - 2:08
at the time of the cold war.
  • 2:08 - 2:14
    But who would have thought
  • 2:14 - 2:17
that a small woman from a country
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    where no one has ever
    been to space before
  • 2:22 - 2:27
has a chance to go to the space next year.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    That is my humble self.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    (Applause)
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    (Cheers)
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    Thank you.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
Now, let me tell you something
    about this story.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
    This project I participated in
    was sponsored by Axe.
  • 2:43 - 2:49
The Axe Apollo Academy is going
to take the first Thai to the space.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
The first time I heard about this project,
I thought that this is my dream.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
The dream I want to make it come true.
  • 2:57 - 3:03
Something I really want it to happen,
but also something least likely to happen.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
They said, first, you have to be
the chosen one of your country.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
You have to go to a camp,
  • 3:08 - 3:11
where we then select the ones
    to go to the space.
  • 3:11 - 3:15
So first, I have to make my way
    in this camp.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    Thailand selected candidates
    by three means.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    I was a winner of "Fan-Pan-Tae"
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    which is a Game Show
    well-known in Thailand.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    We had to answer questions
    within three seconds.
  • 3:26 - 3:30
If you want to see it,
    you can watch a rerun.
  • 3:30 - 3:34
    After that, we actually went
    to a camp in Florida.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    It was a base camp
that was very near to the NASA
  • 3:38 - 3:40
and we also used some facilities
    in the NASA building.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
This is to let you see
    how we were doing there.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
The conditions of the real camp.
  • 3:45 - 3:49
    As mention earlier, the candidates
from 62 countries worldwide came together.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
These are the pictures of the atmosphere.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
There are 107 people from 62 countries.
  • 3:56 - 4:01
Those were selected from a million,
who were interested in this project.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    There were three people representing
Thailand; I was the only woman.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
There were four women in the whole camp.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
We were split up to form the teams
    to do various activities.
  • 4:13 - 4:20
    Activities that will test
whether you can go to space.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
The first one I have done.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
That day, I got up at four
and went from Orlando to Kissimmee
  • 4:26 - 4:28
and went on the plane like this one.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
I was on the plane while filming this.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
The plane was like the military plane.
  • 4:35 - 4:40
That was something I have already
experienced before when I was in Thailand.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
Back then, I had never been
    on a military plane before.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    I had to sit there,
    and then they roll inverted.
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    That is when you experience
    the G-Force, people talking about.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    I had heard some said
that the G-Force is really strong,
  • 4:53 - 4:57
but then I thought that if the pilot
can bear it, I can bear it, too.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
But I had a moment of realization
    when I actually experienced it.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
When you make a five G inverted roll,
    you are five times heavier.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
For example, I weight 50 kilograms,
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    at that moment,
    I suddenly weighted 250 kilograms.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
The weight is not that hard to bear,
  • 5:12 - 5:16
but when a lot of your blood
    flows to your feet,
  • 5:16 - 5:21
you realize that if you are
not holding tight, you may get fainted.
  • 5:21 - 5:25
    After the strong G-Force,
it is time to experience Zero-Force,
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    a state of weightless.
  • 5:27 - 5:31
    This is a Boeing 737,
of which the seats have been removed.
  • 5:31 - 5:37
This is not an ordinary flight, it makes
you feel like the plane is falling down.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    Everyone inside was floating around.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    It looks like fun,
  • 5:41 - 5:46
but some had to thrown up
because they could not bear it.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    Apart from activities like these,
    which test your capability,
  • 5:50 - 5:54
    they also want to see
    if you are strong enough.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
So they took the assault course,
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    which is actually
    a military assault course
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    used in the military practice.
  • 6:01 - 6:04
We had to climb, jump over hurdles,
  • 6:04 - 6:08
    crawl underneath nets,
did sit-ups, push-ups, and skip rope.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
Approximately ten activities in a row.
  • 6:10 - 6:15
Women and men had to do
    exactly the same activities.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
And for me, the sport I do
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    - I am 30 years old -
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    is usually yoga.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
But I had to do those activities.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
I remember that Dennis was next to me.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
I could not climb over the climbing wall,
I just did not know how.
  • 6:32 - 6:36
Do I have to use both hands or do I have
to push myself up using my feet?
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    The coordination of your body
    must be just right.
  • 6:38 - 6:44
Once it starts, every man made the way up,
    while I kept falling down.
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    My legs were about
    half the length of theirs.
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    Everybody was so tall.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
At that moment, I was losing my faith.
  • 6:53 - 6:57
They told us that from 107
    selected candidates in this camp
  • 6:57 - 7:01
only 23 will be chosen to go to space.
  • 7:01 - 7:04
So if I could not do
    any of these activities,
  • 7:04 - 7:09
it means that I am likely to loose
    the ticket to space.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
In this picture, you may see
that I was at the bottom
  • 7:13 - 7:17
and Dennis had to come down to pull me up,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
"You can still climb, you can do it."
  • 7:19 - 7:23
So I managed to climb up: sit-ups,
    push-ups, or carrying sacks,
  • 7:23 - 7:25
we all had to do the same things,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
For me, I feel that this is really hard,
  • 7:27 - 7:30
    because I am a woman,
and I have never done such things before.
  • 7:30 - 7:34
I almost fainted but then I thought,
  • 7:34 - 7:40
if I have already made it this far,
I have to do my best.
  • 7:40 - 7:45
    Finally, I was awarded
with one of the 23 tickets
  • 7:45 - 7:49
to fly to space next year.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    Next to me
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    (Applause)
  • 7:53 - 7:56
    - Thank you -
  • 7:56 - 8:00
...next to me is Mister Buzz Aldrin,
  • 8:00 - 8:03
    who was the second man
on the Moon, after Neil Armstrong.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
He was also in the Apollo 11 mission.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    It was a big honour
that he gave us award that day.
  • 8:09 - 8:14
This is the most miraculous story
that ever happen in my entire life.
  • 8:14 - 8:19
    After that, many people asked,
"Aren't you afraid of going to space?
  • 8:19 - 8:21
How can you be so brave?"
  • 8:21 - 8:23
But for me, I see myself
  • 8:23 - 8:27
as a normal person, who maybe
    puts more effort into things.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
Rather than asking if I am afraid, ask me
if there is anything I am not scared of.
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    From the beginning,
when I had to win the gameshow.
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    You have to understand
  • 8:35 - 8:39
that I am just a nerdy person
who works as an ordinary engineer,
  • 8:39 - 8:45
but then I had to be on TV,
    participating in a game show.
  • 8:45 - 8:49
I really had to try very hard.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    That is why I wanted
    to tell you something.
  • 8:52 - 8:58
We all have a comfort zone.
I am sure you have heard of it before.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    It is the space where
    we can be comfortable.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
Our everyday routine is in this zone.
  • 9:04 - 9:05
    I also have one.
  • 9:05 - 9:09
But one day, you have to step out
    of your comfort zone.
  • 9:09 - 9:11
A lot of people do not dare to step out.
  • 9:11 - 9:15
I was also one who felt that this is scary
and I do not dare to step out.
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    But when I was forced
    to make a big decision;
  • 9:18 - 9:23
either try or I let the golden opportunity
I ever dreamed of slip through my hands.
  • 9:23 - 9:29
    So I slowly expanded
    my horizon until I entered
  • 9:29 - 9:36
    the where-the-magic happens zone,
    where my miraculous story happened.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
    But if I am asked
    whether the magic immediately happens,
  • 9:39 - 9:40
I have to say it does not.
  • 9:40 - 9:44
Before that - I have to share
with you a little experience -
  • 9:44 - 9:50
before that I was living in Lampang,
I was a normal child from the countryside.
  • 9:50 - 9:55
The first time I left my country,
I was an apprentice at Intel in India.
  • 9:55 - 9:57
I had to live in India for a year.
  • 9:57 - 10:03
    Many parents would not allow
    their daughter to go there,
  • 10:03 - 10:07
but since they are my parents
they told me, "That's OK, dear. Just go."
  • 10:07 - 10:10
So I was part of the team
that got a training in India for a year.
  • 10:10 - 10:16
Another time was when I had
the opportunity to study in France.
  • 10:17 - 10:21
    The hard part was
    that everything is in French,
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    and I could not speak
    a single French word.
  • 10:24 - 10:28
    I had to learn French,
from the beginning, within four months
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    then started to study
for my master degree, all in French.
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    All my classmates were French.
  • 10:33 - 10:35
    Back then, everyone told me,
  • 10:35 - 10:38
    "You can not succeed.
    You are really struggled.
  • 10:38 - 10:41
    You should learn French again
for a year and come back later."
  • 10:41 - 10:45
But I insisted, "Please let me continue.
    Let me prove myself."
  • 10:45 - 10:51
And in the end, I managed to graduate
    with all my other classmates.
  • 10:51 - 10:54
    So I discovered that sometimes,
  • 10:54 - 10:59
the limitations that people told us
or the conditions we impose ourselves,
  • 10:59 - 11:04
    are not really there.
  • 11:04 - 11:08
Do you still remember what you wanted
to be when you was a child?
  • 11:08 - 11:10
When I received my space ticket,
  • 11:10 - 11:14
    I had opportunities
    to visit schools and universities
  • 11:14 - 11:17
to tell the students my story.
  • 11:18 - 11:22
And I realized that those who are
    most excited by this story
  • 11:22 - 11:24
    are the children.
  • 11:24 - 11:27
And they felt that these stories
    can actually happen.
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    This is their dream.
  • 11:29 - 11:33
They also want to be astronauts.
  • 11:33 - 11:35
    But as we grow up,
  • 11:35 - 11:40
we tend to forget about our dreams,
and what we wanted to become.
  • 11:40 - 11:41
Today I would ask you again
  • 11:44 - 11:50
    - the last slide, please -
  • 11:50 - 11:54
What did you want to be
    when you were young?
  • 11:54 - 11:58
Or also, for now, what is your dream?
  • 11:58 - 12:02
Have your dreams already been fulfilled?
  • 12:02 - 12:07
If not, I want to tell you to dare,
  • 12:07 - 12:10
to get out and follow your dreams.
  • 12:10 - 12:14
Because there is nobody who is not afraid.
  • 12:14 - 12:18
    I was also afraid,
but what I did is I dared to do,
  • 12:18 - 12:21
    even though I was afraid.
  • 12:21 - 12:26
    Try expand your comfort zone,
    stretch it out.
  • 12:26 - 12:30
    Because every time
when you do it, you will grow.
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    There may be mistakes.
  • 12:32 - 12:37
I also admit that there are
    many mistakes in my life.
  • 12:37 - 12:41
And who has never done anything wrong?
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    I don't think there is.
  • 12:43 - 12:46
    If there were such people,
I think they are facing a real problem
  • 12:46 - 12:50
because errors are always part of success.
  • 12:50 - 12:53
I want to encourage all of you
    to follow your dream,
  • 12:53 - 12:57
    no matter what it is,
no matter how far it would be.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
Although others said it is impossible,
  • 12:59 - 13:02
    there is only you
who can say it is possible.
  • 13:02 - 13:04
Get up and make your dreams come true.
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    Thank you.
  • 13:06 - 13:09
    (Applause)
