Basic Fingerstyle: Travis Finger Picking (Folk Guitar Lesson FO-108) How to play
-
0:05 - 0:07Hi, how'ya doing, Justin here.
-
0:07 - 0:10Welcome to this lesson on
basic Travis picking. -
0:10 - 0:14Now Travis picking gets it's name from
the great Merle Travis, -
0:14 - 0:19a country guitar picker and his
picking style was subsequently stolen -
0:19 - 0:23by anyone who played fingerstyle
accoustic guitar. It sounds really cool -
0:23 - 0:25and it's a great technique to learn.
-
0:25 - 0:29Now it's basically a little bit more
complicated version of the thumb -
0:29 - 0:32moving around that we've looked at
previously, but in order to help your -
0:32 - 0:35development overall as well, we're now
going to be applying this to -
0:35 - 0:39some barre chords. To really make sure
that you got your barre chords good as well. -
0:39 - 0:44So, let's get to a close-up, we're gonna be
using a C, A-shape barre chord. -
0:44 - 0:46Which is (plays) this one,
you're gonna see it in the close-up -
0:46 - 0:51in a second; I'm gonna show you a close-up
first of all of the fretting hand and then -
0:51 - 0:55we'll go to the close-up of the picking
hand to see what all the fuss is about. -
0:55 - 0:59Ok, here we are for our C chord.
Now this is of course an A-shape -
0:59 - 1:03barre chord,-with the 1st finger on the
root note C,- at the 3rd fret, -
1:03 - 1:07you don't tuck your 2nd finger like that,
I'm just doing it to keep things nice and -
1:07 - 1:12simple for you to see. Now, what we want
to get used to the idea of here is the 1st -
1:12 - 1:17finger moving between the note C and the
note G. The pattern we're learning is this: -
1:17 - 1:24♪
-
1:24 - 1:27So, just get use to the idea of this 1st
finger moving -
1:27 - 1:35♪
-
1:35 - 1:36Let's check out the picking hand!
-
1:37 - 1:40The big deal with this Travis picking is
the movement of the thumb. -
1:40 - 1:44And instead of just alternating between
two strings that we've had before -
1:44 - 1:51when we looked at our pattern, (♪)
our thumb is now gonna go: -
1:51 - 1:565th string, 4th string,
6th string, 4th string. -
1:56 - 2:00♪
-
2:00 - 2:02Which is why we had a look at the
1st finger moving over between the -
2:02 - 2:055th string and the 6th string.
-
2:05 - 2:07Now but don't use a barre, move
your 1st finger! -
2:07 - 2:08♪
-
2:08 - 2:13So, the 1st pattern we're going to look at
is basically our very simple pattern 1: -
2:13 - 2:16♪
-
2:16 - 2:18That was the original one,
-
2:18 - 2:19but now we're gonna be going:
-
2:19 - 2:24♪
-
2:24 - 2:27Again, you'd gonna have to probably do
this very slowly, I really struggled -
2:27 - 2:30the first time I learned this, so I'd
expect you guys, to at least have a -
2:30 - 2:32bit of fun with it. Really slowly:
-
2:32 - 2:33together:
-
2:33 - 2:39Thumb, 1, thumb on the thickest string,
2nd finger, thumb back on the 4th string. -
2:39 - 2:49♪
-
2:49 - 2:52If you're really struggling to hold your
barre chord down, and you see a barre chord, -
2:52 - 2:55just use our regular open A chord:
-
2:55 - 2:59♪
-
2:59 - 3:02you will get the kind of the bottom 2
string ringing out a little bit, -
3:02 - 3:06which sounds a bit funny to my ear,
but at least you can kind of get used to -
3:06 - 3:09the thumb movement there, that's what's
really important is,...getting this: -
3:09 - 3:11♪
-
3:11 - 3:15you know, just practicing that is a really
good idea for this kind of pattern. -
3:15 - 3:18♪
-
3:18 - 3:20Then introduce the other fingers.
-
3:20 - 3:24♪
-
3:24 - 3:26So that's pattern 13.
-
3:26 - 3:27Pattern 14:
-
3:27 - 3:30♪
-
3:30 - 3:32Exactly like our pattern 2,
-
3:32 - 3:34but with this new Travis Picking.
-
3:34 - 3:38♪
-
3:38 - 3:41And of course, you would then start to
merge 13 and 14 together. -
3:41 - 3:43♪
-
3:50 - 3:51You can really hear...
-
3:51 - 3:52♪
-
3:52 - 3:54just sounds cool.
-
3:54 - 3:57A lot of the times these guys have a
little bit of kinda mute on there as well. -
3:57 - 3:59♪
-
3:59 - 4:02So you get that... I'm just resting my
palm of my hand there: -
4:02 - 4:05♪
-
4:10 - 4:14Ok, pattern 15 and 16 where I'm to now,
-
4:14 - 4:16I'm using a G barre chord
-
4:16 - 4:18An E-shape barre chord at the 3rd fret.
-
4:18 - 4:20Hopefully you know how to play that,
-
4:20 - 4:25now, all of the 6th string root patterns
we've checked out so far, -
4:25 - 4:28had the thumb bouncing between
the 6th string and the 4th string. -
4:28 - 4:30♪
-
4:35 - 4:38Now what we're doing for our
Travis picking is, we're going: -
4:38 - 4:456th string, 4, 5, 4
6, 4, 5, 4 -
4:45 - 4:48So that's where it starts
to get a bit more complicated. -
4:48 - 4:49♪
-
4:55 - 4:57Again, you gonna have to just do these
really slowly. -
4:57 - 5:00It's still then same pattern with the rest
of the fingers as we've been looking, -
5:00 - 5:04as same as pattern 1 for the C chord, or
pattern 3 for the G chord would've been -
5:04 - 5:09having this 2nd finger on the beat and
then the 1st finger on the end after 2 and then -
5:09 - 5:11back to that finger; That pattern.
-
5:11 - 5:13♪
-
5:13 - 5:15That's the original pattern we would
have had on the G. -
5:15 - 5:17Then just try and break out that...
-
5:17 - 5:21the thumb, into moving over doing
to the 5th string. -
5:21 - 5:24I would highly recommend doing
what I'm doing now. -
5:24 - 5:27I've just...doing 6th, 4, 5, 4
-
5:27 - 5:31Just doing that quite a few times
to get the thumb used to moving -
5:31 - 5:34onto the 5th string.
-
5:34 - 5:36♪
-
5:36 - 5:38And then introduce those other notes.
-
5:38 - 5:41♪
-
5:41 - 5:44Again, really slowly and gradually
build up the speed is what you want. -
5:44 - 5:49Now, pattern 16: exactly the same as
our pattern 4 was originally. -
5:49 - 5:52There's pattern 4: ♪
-
5:56 - 5:59And 16 now, we're now just again
-
5:59 - 6:00moving it onto our Travis picking
-
6:00 - 6:04♪
-
6:12 - 6:15I'm sure you're gonna have a whole
lot of fun with your Travis picking, -
6:15 - 6:18It is a little bit tricky and it takes a
little bit of practice, but nearly all -
6:18 - 6:21of the things that sound really cool
require quite a bit of practice and -
6:21 - 6:25this is one of them. I'm gonna show you
a cool little country trick as well, -
6:25 - 6:27that I think you might enjoy.
-
6:28 - 6:30I was really stoked when I
discovered this thing. -
6:31 - 6:41Hopefully you remember your C7 open chord.
Right? If you move that C chord up 2 frets -
6:41 - 6:42you're on a D chord.
-
6:42 - 6:43♪
-
6:45 - 6:47Now, if we use pattern 2:
-
6:47 - 6:48♪
-
6:50 - 6:53what I'm doing is moving my 3rd finger
-
6:54 - 6:55over to the 6th string.
-
6:55 - 6:56♪
-
6:58 - 6:585th string:
-
6:58 - 6:59♪
-
6:59 - 7:006th string:
-
7:00 - 7:01♪
-
7:04 - 7:05Sounds pretty cool.
-
7:05 - 7:06Now, you can do it with the Blues.
-
7:06 - 7:13Using D, G, back to D
-
7:13 - 7:15♪
-
7:21 - 7:22G
-
7:31 - 7:33It's a really fun little pattern.
-
7:33 - 7:34A
-
7:36 - 7:37G
-
7:40 - 7:41Back down to D
-
7:42 - 7:43♪
-
7:46 - 7:49And you can kind of develop this
idea quite a lot. -
7:49 - 7:50Hope you'll have fun with that,
-
7:50 - 7:52take care, and I'll see you for
-
7:52 - 7:54the last lesson in this series,
-
7:54 - 7:57which is adding in hammer-ons
and flick-offs to our patterns. -
7:57 - 7:59Just kind of tricky enough already.
-
7:59 - 8:01And now we're gonna b introducing
some new stuff. -
8:01 - 8:03So, I'm sure you're gonna enjoy that too.
-
8:03 - 8:05See you very soon, bye-bye!
