Week 1.5 Manipulation
-
0:14 - 0:16[MUSIC].
The last point I'd like you to just think -
0:16 - 0:21about, again something I've mentioned
before, is the issue of manipulation. -
0:21 - 0:30every personal computer now, has some
elementary program built into it that -
0:30 - 0:35will allow you to alter images, to one
degree or another. -
0:35 - 0:40When you're starting to look at some of
them, professional products, that, that -
0:40 - 0:44alteration can be very subtle and
sometimes almost completely -
0:44 - 0:49imperceptible.
It wasn't so long ago that National -
0:49 - 0:54Geographic required photographers to
guarantee they hadn't used a filter on -
0:54 - 0:57their camera before accepting
photographs. -
0:57 - 1:03Now we have a more prevalent issue about
the capturing of the images. -
1:03 - 1:08How much they are changed for those in
public domain, those that are used in the -
1:08 - 1:15media for the immediacy of the event
without thought about reportage. -
1:15 - 1:23Or the legacy of those particular images
will have when viewed in the future by -
1:23 - 1:28historians in 20 or 30 years time.
Most images are now captured digi, -
1:28 - 1:32digitally.
We don't have the artifact to the same -
1:32 - 1:41degree that we had with the film negative
and there comes a point in saying, are we -
1:41 - 1:47going to be too reliant on the process of
transfer from the camera to the computer. -
1:47 - 1:52To the published sphere, that there are
too many steps in which images can be -
1:52 - 1:55altered or manipulated.
What is authentic? -
1:55 - 2:00What is the image?
And that's something that I'd like us to -
2:00 - 2:05consider by using some of the web
references. -
2:05 - 2:09From four and six.
And we'll talk more about that in the -
2:09 - 2:09next section.
