Why is the world warming up?

    (soft ambient music)
  • 0:03 - 0:05
[Kristen] Why is the world warming up?
  • 0:07 - 0:10
Let's think of Earth for just
    a moment as a greenhouse.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
Every second, a huge amount of energy
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    smashes into our greenhouse.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
Our atmosphere, the glass roof and walls,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    reflect some of that energy,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
but most of it passes right
    through and heats everything up.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
Much of that heat used to
    escape back into space,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
keeping us at a stable, warm temperature.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    But then something changed.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
Humans began to spew enough carbon dioxide
  • 0:39 - 0:41
to fill billions of greenhouses each day.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
What does all that greenhouse gas do?
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    It makes the glass of
    our greenhouse thicker.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    Thicker glass means
    heat escapes into space
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    much more slowly.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
And don't forget, energy from the sun
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    is still streaming in
    just as quickly as before.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
The result is a planet with temperatures
  • 1:00 - 1:04
    too hot for our liking
    and, eventually, living.
