    (narrator) Endangered species.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
You've probably heard the term before,
  • 0:07 - 0:10
but what exactly is an endangered species?
  • 0:10 - 0:11
And why do they need our help?
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Let's break it down.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
The word "species" refers to a group
  • 0:17 - 0:20
or a type of similar living organisms
    that can repopulate.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
So for example, humans are a species,
  • 0:24 - 0:29
but different types of animals, plants,
    and insects are also species.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Lions, owls, lizards,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    butterflies, ants and bees,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
the trees, grasses and flowers we grow,
  • 0:36 - 0:41
even the fruits and veggies we eat
are all examples of different species.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    But what does it mean
    when a species is endangered?
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    Endangered species literally means:
  • 0:47 - 0:50
a species that is in danger of extinction
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    or being completely wiped out
    from existence.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    To help keep track
of the health of a species
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    and how endangered it is,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    it's placed in a category,
    based on things like:
  • 1:02 - 1:06
its population, the health of its habitat,
    and other scientific data.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
The categories range from of least concern
    to fully extinct.
  • Not Synced
    And while all these categories
are important in evaluating life on Earth,
  • Not Synced
    the species listed
    as critically endangered,
  • Not Synced
    endangered or vulnerable,
  • Not Synced
    are species
    that are threatened with extinction.
  • Not Synced
So what causes a species to decline
    and become endangered or extinct?
  • Not Synced
    Let's look at an example.
  • Not Synced
More tan 65 million years ago,
  • Not Synced
    at least 700 known types
or species of dinosaurs roamed the Earth,
  • Not Synced
until drastic changes in their environment
    caused them to go extinct.
  • Not Synced
    Scientists say
that a giant asteroid hit the Earth,
  • Not Synced
    killing many dinosaurs on impact
  • Not Synced
and throwing the Earth into a frenzy.
  • Not Synced
    Volcanoes were erupting,
  • Not Synced
    releasing dust, soot,
    and carbón into the air.
  • Not Synced
    Dark clouds covered the sky
  • Not Synced
and the climate changed very quickly,
  • Not Synced
    making it difficult
for plants and animals to survive.
  • Not Synced
    This unhealthy environment
  • Not Synced
    caused many of the remaining
    dinosaur species to become endangered.
  • Not Synced
And without clean air and water
and sources of food and shelter,
  • Not Synced
they were ultimately wiped out completely.
  • Not Synced
    Only a few species survived
  • Not Synced
and evolved into what we know today
    as birds.
  • Not Synced
    In this example,
you can see how one action
  • Not Synced
can cause a chain reaction of events
  • Not Synced
    that can very quickly create
    a dangerously unhealthy environment.
  • Not Synced
    Today, we are still experiencing
    natural changes in the environment
  • Not Synced
    and the Earth's atmosphere,
  • Not Synced
    but we're also experiencing changes
that are caused by human activities.

    Activities like fishing, growing food,
  • Not Synced
    constructing roads and buildings,
  • Not Synced
    using electricity, driving, shopping,
  • Not Synced
and many other things we do every day
  • Not Synced
can have major effects on the hábitats
  • Not Synced
    or places where species live
    around the world.
  • Not Synced
    And when habitats change,
the species living there are impacted.
  • Not Synced
    Things like deforestation,
  • Not Synced
    water, light, and noise pollution,
  • Not Synced
    using too many natural resources,
  • Not Synced
and species being captured and brought
to places where they don't belong
  • Not Synced
    are all putting plants,
    animals, and humans in danger.
  • Not Synced
Millions of species exist on Earth,
  • Not Synced
    but scientific research tells us
  • Not Synced
    that as many as 2000
of those species could be going extint
  • Not Synced
    per year.

Let's call on one of our experts, Leigh,

  • Not Synced
    There are only
    two subspecies remaining today:

  • Not Synced
    And sadly, both are endangered.
  • Not Synced
    Poaching, ilegal trade, habitat loss,
    and other human conflict issues
  • Not Synced

to continue to decline year after year.
  • Not Synced
Sadly, there are only about 3900 tigers

  • Not Synced
The good news is, all over the world,
